Bender, Marcia Barber -
The
Rev. Don Fisher officiated at funeral services for Marcia B. Bender Sept. 19 at
the Lenox United Methodist Church. Mrs.
Bender
died at Rosary Hospital in Corning Sept. 17. She was 74.
Burial
was in West Fairview Cemetery, Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers
were Ivan Bennett, Ron Fulk, Curly Cain, Dick Gray,
Keith Lindell and Bob Reynolds.
Born
March 16, 1911 at Burlington, Mrs. Bender was the only child of James Hammond
and Clara Adelaide McDaniel Barber.
She
moved to Lenox with her family in 1914, and was graduated from Lenox Community
High School in 1929. A 1932 graduate
of
Drake University in Des Moines, Mrs. Bender taught school at Mallard, Iowa
until 1935.
On
Aug. 31, 1935 she and Rollie E. Bender were married
in Lenox. She taught school in Lenox in 1940 and 1945 and was active in
the
operation of Larkin-Bender Funeral Home.
She
leaves two sons, Tom Bender of Lenox and James Bender of Indianola; a daughter,
Terri Bender of Albia; and nine
grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Mrs.
Bender exemplified service above self to her community, and was kind and loving
to her family and friends.
She
was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW; a 50-year member of
P.E.O., a former worthy matron of
Eastern
Star, and a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota, National
Professional Music Society, Lenox Alumni
Association
and Taylor County Historical Society. She was active in the Meals on Wheels
Program.

Bruce, Ruby Jenell McMath -
Funeral
services were held Sept. 6, 1:30 p.m., for Ruby Jenell Bruce, 59, of Lenox.
The
funeral was held from Larkin-Bender Funeral Home and interment was in North
Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. The Rev. Lester
Hesseltine officiated.
Pallbearers
were Don Chapman, Mike Halligan, C. B. Adams, Richard McMath, John Sloan and Ron Fulk.
Mrs.
Bruce died at her home in Lenox Sept. 3.
A
daughter of Vincent and Elsie Bice McMath, Mrs. Bruce was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Diagonal.
She
leaves a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Debbie) Bender of Lenox;, a son, Mark Hoffman of
Grand Ridge, Ill.; a sister, Thelma
Laughlin
of Oregon, Ill.; two brothers, Don McMath of Osceola
and Merle McMath of Des Moines; four grandchildren
and several
nieces
and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Viva Carlson and Norma Jean McMath, and three brothers, Clone, Floyd
and
Marion McMath.

Clayton,
Robert Leland -
Robert
Leland Clayton, a native of Lenox, died Aug. 23 in Houston, Texas, following a
long illness.
He
was the youngest son of George R. and Delia Elizabeth Graham Clayton, and was
born Nov. 2, 1913. He was graduated
from
high school in Lenox in 1932.
He
moved to Houston from Lenox in 1946.
Survivors
include his wife, Stella K. Clayton of the home; a daughter Cynthia Ann Keister, one grandson and a great granddaughter.
He also leaves several cousins,
including Dave Holben of Lenox.

Colyn, Charles J (Chuck) -
Charles
J. (Chuck) Colyn, former resident of the Lenox area,
was fatally injured Aug. 29 in an accident near Great Bend, Kan.
Colyn,
who owned and operated Colyn Welding Service in
McPherson, Kan., was thrown from a bucket atop a truck hoist.
Witnesses
said Colyn, 63, was working from the bucket when the
vehicle was struck by another truck, throwing him to the ground.
Funeral
services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church in McPherson, with
burial there. Memorials may be made to the
church.
Mr. Colyn was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Leon, Iowa. He moved to
McPherson in 1953 from Hedrick, Iowa.
His
parents were the Rev. Charles A. and Nora Alexander Colyn.
Charles Colyn and Audrey L. Duke were married March 13, 1943,
at Ft. Smith, Ark.
He
was an army veteran of World War II, a member of the First Baptist Church in
McPherson and a Fidelis Sunday school teacher.
During
World War II, he was decorated with the bronze star.
In
addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Charles Craig Colyn of the home; three daughters, Carmela Snyder of McPherson, Cozette
Christian
of Kingman, Kan., and Callista Gregg of Broken Arrow,
Okla.; two brothers, John L. and David A. Colyn, both
of McPherson;
a
sister, Olive Ranch of Portland, Ore., and eight grandchildren.

Crouch, Wesley J -
Funeral
services were held Monday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Lenox United Methodist Church
for Wesley J. Crouch, 86.
Mr.
Crouch died June 27 at Rosary Hospital in Corning.
The
Rev. Lester Hesseltine officiated and interment was
in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
Pallbearers
were Roy Martin, Bill Young, Bud Wynn, Reldon Ambrose, Howard Stoaks and George Jones.
Honorary
pallbearers were Bob Reynolds, Jasper Ambrose, George Schrader, Howard Elder,
Bruce Wilson, Don Schrader, Walter

and Ted Bruington.
Born
Feb. 1, 1899, at Cambridge, Ill., Mr. Crouch was a son of James and Edith Slack
Crouch. The family moved to this area when he
was
an infant, and he attended Guss and Grove Center
schools.
He
and Blanche Wynn Hunt were married May 10, 1923, at Maryville, Mo. They farmed
for many years northwest of Lenox, later
moving
into Lenox. He was a hog buyer for Central Livestock Co. until his retirement
some years ago.
The
Crouches observed their 61st wedding anniversary this year.
He
is survived by his wife, Blanche, of the home; a stepdaughter, Thelma Weigle of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a brother, Frank Crouch of
Phoenix,
Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Quinn of Spencer and Mrs. Bessie Stone of
Albany, Calif.; four grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Flossie Cree; a stepson, Drexel
Hunt, and two grandchildren.

Funeral
services were held Aug. 7 at Calvary Reformed Church in Pella for Evalena Dorothy DeKoning, 64. The
Rev. Siebert
Kramer
officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service and burial was in Oakwood Cemetery at
Pella. She died at Pella Community
Hospital
Aug. 4 after a brief illness.
Bill Branderhorst Jr., Jerry Branderhorst,
David Van Soelen, Douglas Van Zee, Curtis De Koning, Terry De Koning, David P.
Schut and Ronald Schut, nephews, were pallbearers.
Born
Feb. 16, 1921, near Prairie City, Ms. De Koning was
the second of 12 children of Gerrit and Evalena Van Ryswyk
Branderhorst.
She attended rural Prairie City schools and joined the Prairie City Christian
Reformed Church at an early age.
She
and Alber Henry De Koning were married Feb. 5, 1944, at Prairie City. They farmed in Jasper County, Iowa,
moving to
Newton
in 1961 and to Pella in 1964, where they had resided since.
Ms.
De Koning had been employed at the T&D Department
Store in Pella 11 years.
Ms.
De Koning was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother,
and was especially fond of her brothers and sisters. She enjoyed
reading,
needlework and gardening.
She leaves her husband of the home; three daughters,
Mrs. Marvin (Ruth) De Nooy of Lenox, Helen Poortinga and Marilyn Van Mersbergen,
both of Pella; nine sisters and brothers, Marie Vos and Wilma Van Zee of Pella; Mildred Vander Hoek of
Monroe; William Branderhorst of Newton; Marvin Branderhorst of Pella; Leona Van Soelen of Sully; Esther Wellington of Des
Moines; Pearl Van Zee of Newton; and Gerrit R. Branderhorst of Pella.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister and infant brother,
Esther and John.

Furstenau, Otis C -
Funeral
services were held last week in Fremont, Neb., for Otis C. Furstenau,
86, who died July 24. He was the father of James Furstenau of Lenox.
Otis Furstenau had made his home at the Good Samaritan
Home in Scribner, Neb., the past three years.
Services
were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, the Rev. Charles Swanson
officiating. Burial was in Calvary
Cemetery
there. Moser Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers
were Mike, James D., John and David Furstenau, Bill Gaugnen and Leon Rabe.
0tis Furstenau was born April 20, 899, in Dodge County,
Nebraska. He moved to Fremont in 1933, where he was a communicant
of
St. Patrick's Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 200.
On
May 12, 1920, he and Mamie A. Gaughen were married at
St. Patrick's Church in Clyde, Neb. She died Nov. 1, 1964. He was married
Oct.
6, 1966, to Delilah McCauley in David City, Neb. She died Dec. 9, 1977.
In
addition to his son, James, Otis Furstenau is
survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wilmer (Betty) Furtstenau of Fremont, 12
grandchildren
and nine great grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents William and Jennie Spath Furstenau, two sons, Wilmer and Richard, four brothers,
Harry, Burt, Ray and Bill Furstenau, and two sisters
Martha Furstenau and Idella Vieth.

Homan, Annie Lovinnie -
Funeral
services were held at the Prescott United Church at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23,
for Annie Lovinnie Homan, 88. She died at
the
Lenox Care Center Aug. 20.
The
Rev. Jeanne Groom officiated and pallbearers were Larry, Duane and Stephen
Casey, Alan and Jeffrey Pierce and Deborah
Linman.
Interment
was in the cemetery at Carl, Iowa.
Mrs.
Homan was born April 26, 1897, at Mt. Etna in Adams County, daughter of John
and Orena Fast Heatherington.
She and
Hervey
Homan were wed in February of 1919, and made their home near Carl.
Mrs.
Homan was a member of the Carl Methodist Church prior to moving to Prescott,
when she joined the Methodist Church
there.
She was telephone operator in Prescott for many years. She loved music and
enjoyed playing piano and singing.
She
leaves a daughter, Mrs. Rex (Jeanne) Pierce of Lenox; a brother, Walter Heatherington of Corning, and six grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Gayle; one sister and three
brothers.

Johnson, Jo Ann -
Jo
Ann Johnson, 47, of Bakersfield, Calif., died there Aug. 15.
Rites
were held in Bakersfield with burial in Paso Robles District Cemetery.
Mrs.
Johnson was a native of Union County, Iowa, where she was born Dec. 27, 1937.
She
had been a resident of California most of her life, and was a teacher, having
graduated from California State University in
Bakersfield.
She
had retired after teaching in the Bakersfield schools for 14 years. She was a
member of Retired Teachers Assoc. and the
Valley
Christian Church.
She
leaves her husband, Richard, and two daughters, Billee Jo Etchecopar and Jackee Ann Johnson, all of Bakersfield; her parents,
Charles
and Agnes Ann Gustafson of Atascadero, Calif., and two grandchildren.

Miller, Lyle Weldon -
Funeral
services were held June 14 in Grant City, Mo., for Lyle Weldon Miller, 57, who
died June 12 in a Kansas City hospital. He had
been
ill for some time.
The
Rev. David Todd and Bob Findley conducted the services and interment was in the
Grant City Cemetery.
Born
Feb. 1, 1928, on a farm near Allendale, Mo., Mr. Miller had lived his entire
life in Worth County, Missouri, except for time spent in the armed forces. He
attended Worth County schools and was graduated from the Grant City High School
in 1946.
He
attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, and served as a combat
rifleman in the Korean conflict in the 1950s. He continued to serve in the
Missouri Air National Guard following separation from active service, and had
retired from the guard.
He
and Alice Ann Beemer of Conway, Iowa, were united in marriage in 1955. They
resided on a farm, and Mr. Miller was a lifelong
farmer
who enjoyed his work.
He
was a member of the Christian Church and had served as an elder and a trustee.
He was a charter member of the board of directors of the Worth County
Convalescent Center, and a charter board member of the Rural Water District.
He
had worked with the ASCS for 18 years, and was active in community affairs and
contributed much to the betterment of his community. He was a member of
Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the Dominoe Club and
Morning Coffee Club.
He
is survived by his wife of the home; four sons, Burton, Marshall, Joel and
Doug; two granddaughters, Renae and April; his
mother, Lucy Miller; two brothers, Olan and Claude; two sisters, Lois and Dean
Miller, all of Grant City. His father-in-law, Sim Beemer, is a
resident
of Conway. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his father Franz Miller.

Greg
S. Reece, 25, of Glendale, Ariz., died at Thunderbird Hospital there Aug. 7 of
injuries suffered in a traffic accident. He
was
the husband of Jean Russmann, former Lenox resident.
Funeral
services were held at Chapel of the Chimes in Glendale Aug. 10, Pastor Ron Garrert officiating. Burial was in Resthaven
Park
Cemetery, Glendale.
Greg
Reece was born July 17, 1960, in Hamilton, Ohio, son of Paul and Sara Reece. He
and the former Miss Russmann were married
in
May of 1979. He was employed at Kokosing Construction
Co. in Phoenix.
A
loving, devoted husband and father, Mr. Reece was a hard worker who loved the
outdoors.
He
leaves his wife, Jean, and three sons, Russell 5, Ben 3, and Colt 2, all of the
home in Glendale; his parents; two brothers, Andy
of
Luke Air Force Base and Clayton of Glendale, and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Jean Russmann Reece is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Cordell of Glendale.

services were held July 10 in Creston for Mary Madden Schofield, 74, who died
there July 7. Burial was in Graceland

Speakers
were Tim Spencer and Eldon Graves. Dedication of the grave was by Wayne L.
Schofield.

Born
July 30, 1910 in Kent, Mrs. Schofield was a daughter of Walter and Mary Madden
Mickey. She was married Aug. 27,
1928
to Verne Schofield in Creston.
She
was a resident of Union County prior to Gowrie in 1958, then to Idaho Falls,
Idaho in 1961. She returned to Creston in 1971.
She
was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints.
She
leaves a daughter, Norma Jean Johnson of Burlington; two sons, Wayne of Creston
and Lloyd of Lenox; a sister, Mrs. Bernice
Richardson
of Creston; two brothers, Glenn of Creston and Howard of Kent; 11 grandchildren
and eight great grandchildren. Bonnie Maguire and Deena Schofield of Lenox and
Jack Schofield, formerly of Lenox, are among the grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A
memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Association.

George
Delano Starks, 90, died at St. Margaret Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., Sept.
17. Funeral services were held at the Lenox
First
Christian Church Sept. 20, Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Burial was in West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox, Larkin-Bender
Funeral
Home in charge.
Pallbearers
were Donald Dean Miller, Cecil Miller, Howard Stoaks,
Mervin Shawler, Sean Bailey and Roland Miller.
A
son of Delano and Abigail King Starks, George Starks was born Feb. 17, 1895, at
Corning. He was reared in the Corning area and
on
Nov. 29, 1923, he and Edna Mildred Miller were married at the home of her
parents near Lenox. They farmed in the Corning
area
until the late 1940s, when they moved to a farm near Lenox, then moved into
Lenox upon their retirement in 1972.
Mr.
Starks was interested in higher education, and had served on a rural school
board for 18 years. He was devoted to his family,
and
made extra effort to see that his children were always in attendance to school.
He was a gentle, good-natured man, and a
good
neighbor.
He
leaves his wife, Edna, of the home in Lenox; two daughters, Ruby Wiley of Basehor,
Kan., and Bernita Starks of Arlington, Va.;
four
grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and a sister, Alice Watts of
Villisca.

Teatsworth, Clara Pearl -
Funeral
services were held last week at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford for Clara
Pearl Teatsworth, 85, of Gravity. Burial
was
in Washington Cemetery at Gravity.
Ms. Teatsworth died in a Des Moines hospital of injuries
suffered in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 2 near Leon. The mishap occurred
a week ago Sunday.
Ms. Teatsworth was a passenger in a car driven by her husband,
George, also 85. The Iowa Patrol said the car left the roadway on the
north
side, struck a creek bank and rolled back into the dry creek bed. The patrol
was unable to determine the specific cause of the
mishap,
which was not discovered until about 31 hours after it occurred.
A
highway construction crew found the 1981 Ford, which was obscured from vision
by passersby due to a bridge and weeds.

Thomas,
Anna Christine -
Funeral
services were held July 17, 10 a.m., at Lenox First Christian Church for Anna
Christine Thomas, 81.
The
Rev. Howard Wells officiated and burial was in North Fairview Cemetery in
Lenox. Russel Vogel, Arnold Leonard, Clark
Peterson,
Lloyd Travis, Tom Matya and Don Tully were
pallbearers.
Harold
Welch, Melvin Williams, George Hermansen and Glen
Williams were honorary pallbearers.
Born
in Illinois Nov. 10, 1903, Mrs. Thomas moved with her parents to Gallatin, Mo.,
as a child. She and Robert Hiram Thomas of Savannah, Mo., were married May 15,
1928.
They
moved to the Conway area in 1934, later moving to the Bushville area where they farmed until retiring
and
coming to Lenox in 1976.
Mrs.
Thomas created beautiful quilts, and enjoyed raising flowers. She was devoted
to her family, especially her grandchildren and
great
grandchildren. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends.
Survivors
include two daughters, Mrs. William (Marian) Barrans of Lenox, and Mrs. Harold (Lillian) Leonard of Corning; a son, Robert H.
Thomas
of Corning; a brother, Chris Cohrs of Gallatin; three
sisters, Rebecca Overton of Gallatin, Caroline Stone and Alma LeMaster, both of Jefferson City, Mo.; eight grandchildren
and six great grandchildren.
