Bell, Martin E -

Martin E. Bell, age 94 of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Des Moines and the Clearfield and Lenox areas of southwest Iowa, died April 12 at home.

He is survived by his wife, Delpha; son, Duane and daughter in-law, Connie of Shorewood, Minn.; sons Dean and Doyle of Green Valley; one

brother, Darl of Clearfield; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Beck of Lenox; two grandsons, four step-grandchildren, three greatgrandsons,

and four step-greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews Jan Really of Cincinnati, Gaylan Bell and wife Linda of Clearfield; Richard Bell and wife Kay of Branson, Mo., and Sherry and husband Monte Parrott of Afton.

He was preceded in death by a sister Eula Campbell, who died in 1990.

Martin was born in rural Adams County, Iowa, February 2, 1902 to Herman C. and Claris (Eckels) Bell then farmed and barbered in that

area and later barbered in Des Moines. He had a passion for music and enjoyed writing poetry and songs. He was a member of the Barbershoppers group and was awarded Des Moines Barbershopper of the year in 1969. In his later years he volunteered as a barber and as an entertainer at numerous retirement homes and centers.

He was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley, the Des Moines Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, and a former

member of Glen Echo Christian Church in Des Moines, IA.

Services for Martin will be held at the Methodist Church in Lenox, May 11 at 2 p.m.

Brown, Lavern Allen -

A Memorial Service of Remembrance for LaVern was held at the Lenox Christian Church at 10:30 on April 20. Pastor Dena Woldruff was in charge of the services.

Great-Nieces and Nephews sang a song in his memory, "Gentle Shepherd." Scriptures and obituary were presented by Rod Maharry, Rich Brown, Andrew Maharry and Nicole Maharry, grand-nieces and Nephews of LaVern.

Time of Remembrance was shared by his sons, Allen and Rick Brown and granddaughter Courtney Brown. Services were completed with a solo by Stan Brown, a nephew-in-law, The Lord's Prayer" by LaVern's request.

Organist was Margaret Whipp, pianist was Diana Maharry. Serving as ushers, were Dwain Boyer and Kenneth John. Honorary

pallbearers were Roger Boulden, Albert Crow, Wayne O'Riley, Willard Peterson, Julian Walter, and George Wurster.

The American Legion presented the flag, followed with the 21-gun salute. Taps were played by Richard Brown and Erica Brown.

LaVern was born to Joe Brown and Bessie May Wood at their farm home located north east of Lenox on January 13, 1922. As a young

boy, he attended a rural school in Adams County, and then graduated from Lenox High School in 1940.

In 1942 he was drafted to serve in World War II. He served in the 13th Air Force of the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. Serving as the gunner in a B24's ball turret, he completed 52 missions over enemy territory during his service.

After returning from the South Pacific in January of 1945, he immediately married his high school sweetheart, Arda Veatch. LaVern received an Honorable Discharge on July 31, 1945. Once discharged, he and his wife spent their first 15 years of marriage farming in the Lenox area. However, in January of 1961, health problems forced them to give up farming and move to Tempe, Arizona.

Soon after his arrival in Arizona, LaVern began working at various bowling lanes before securing a job as the warehouse manager for

Uniroyal Tire company in Phoenix. He remained with Uniroyal until his retirement in 1984.

As a young man, LaVern had been a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church in Lenox. Upon moving to Arizona, LaVern

transferred his membership to Community Christian Church in Tempe. He believed in God and attended services faithfully until his illness of ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) prevented him from doing so in the fall of 1995.

Because of an eye injury he received during one of his missions in the South Pacific, LaVern had earned the Purple Heart, but LaVern was unfortunately discharged before receiving it. To his surprise however, on his 73rd birthday and during the 50th Anniversary celebration with his wife, his family presented him with his Purple Heart.

As an avid sports fan, LaVern consistently followed the Phoenix Suns. In addition, until his health dictated otherwise, he and his wife

religiously attended ASU football, basketball, and baseball games.

Besides sports, LaVern thoroughly enjoyed gardening, craft work and camping with his wife.

On April 2, 1996, Allan LaVern Brown died in the Hospice Wing at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.

Lavern is survived by his wife, Arda, of 51 years; a brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Lois Brown of Lenox; a daughter and son-in-law,

Arlinda and Ed Adams of Chandler, Arizona; sons Allen and Rick Brown of Tempe, Arizona; eight granddaughters, Kim, Michelle, and Suzie Adams, of Chandler, Arizona, Alyssa and Stacey Brown of Ahwatukee, Arizona; Courtney and Lindsay Brown of Tempe,

Arizona, and Stephanie Vega and Husband Alex of Mesa, Arizona and one grandson, Shawn Brown of Tempe, Arizona. Four nieces and their husbands, Diana and Kirk Maharry, Jolene and Stan Brown, Tacey and Randy Samo, all of Lenox and Cindy Heuett of Pueblo, Colorado, and a nephew and with Kurt and Liz Brown of Lenox.

Brother-in-laws and wives, Gene and Lucile Veatch of Lamar, Colorado, Walter and Leona Veatch of Prescott, and sister-in-law, Ione Veatch of Creston and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bess Brown and two year old son, Rodney.

Interment was at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, following the memorial service.

Brown, Orville T (Brownie) -

Orville T. Brown, Jr. (Brownie), oldest son of Orville T. Brown and Ruby Hancock Brown, was born on a farm south of Sharpsburg, Iowa on

February 7, 1925. He passed away at his home in Phoenix, Arizona March 24, 1996.

Survivors include his sons, Doyle D. and James A Brown, daughter Linda R. Waldeck (husband Martin) and six grandchildren. Also, two

brothers Harlan and Bob, and three sisters Vie Guess, Betty Donaldson, and Jean Fitzgerald.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Ruth and Dorothy and a daughter Joyce E Wise.

Brownie had resided in the Phoenix area since 1966. He previously owned and operated Brown's Office Supply, He was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church and many civic organizations.

Services were held March 28th at his church. His body was cremated and remains will be returned to the Conway, Iowa Family Plot.

Campbell, Willard Clare (Bill) -

Willard Clare "Bill" Campbell was born January 6, 1911, in the Lenox area, one of three sons of Ira and Cora (Baldwin) Campbell. He began his education in country school and graduated from Lenox High School in 1928.

On May 14, 1933, Bill was married to Corene Margaret Hiley in Seward, Nebraska. They were blessed with two sons, Haldene and Bill, and two daughters, Carol and Sharon.

Bill was a lifelong farmer. Among his activities outside of farming were his membership in the Lenox Christian Church and his work on the Election Board. After moving to Lenox, Bill continued to feed and befriend the wildlife near their apartment. During his illness,

he was cared for by his wife and many friends. He resided at the Lenox Care Center for six days prior to his death on May 21, 1996, at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 15 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leland and Chester.

Bill's is survived by his wife of 63 years, Corene Campbell of Lenox; sons Haldene Campbell and his wife Ola of Lenox and Bill Campbell

and his wife Jeanette of Indianola, Iowa; daughters Carol Campbell and Sharon Zahn, both of Des Moines; grandchildren David and Daniel Zahn, and Kelly, Mark, Kurt and Brian Campbell; step grandchildren: Deb and Ed Jameson; Step great grandchildren

Wade, Savannah and Wyatt Jameson; other relatives; and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 24 at 10 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Visitation was held Thursday evening at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Serving as pallbearers were Arnold Stone, Richard Bissell, Larry Campbell, Jerry Campbell, David Zahn and Daniel Zahn.

Providing music were Jan Bryant, Elaine Ewart, Karen Shawler, Carol Campbell and Sharon Zahn.

Memorials are suggested to the Lenox Christian Church or the Green Valley Hospice.

Eberle, Alta Trost -

Services for Alta Eberle were held in the Novinger/Taylor Funeral Home on Monday, May 20, 1996. Officiating at the service

was the Rev. Paul Evans of the Bedford United Methodist Church. Interment was at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Alta (Trost) Eberle, the daughter of Chris and Roxie (Lee) Trost, was born in Taylor County, Iowa on June 1, 1902. She grew up in Lenox,

where she attended the Lenox Public School. She lived there most of her life and attended the area churches. In September

of 1921 she married Elmer Eberle at Creston, Iowa and continued to live in the Lenox area where she farmed with her husband.

To this union two sons and one daughter were born.

She lived on the farm until 1983 when she and Elmer moved to the Northside Apartments in Bedford. In 1994 she moved into the

Bedford Manor where she lived until her death.

Alta died at the Mercy Hospital in Corning on May 17, 1996 at the age of 93 years and 11 months.

Alta was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Elmer; a still-born daughter; two grandsons, James Eberle and John Eberle;

and three sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Richard of Bedford and Dale of Jewel, Iowa; three grandsons; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Estrella, Jose Obed Jr -

Jose Obed Estrella Jr. born on March 26, 1996 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa. He was the first child for Obed and Adea (Oliveira) Estrella. Jose died April 5, 1996 (Good Friday) at University of Iowa Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa, after undergoing open heart surgery on April 1, 1996. Mass for Christian burial was held at St. Patrick's Church in Lenox, Iowa. Officiating the Spanish-

English services were Father Dan Siepker of St. Patricks Parish and Father Isaac True from Conception Abbey, Kansas City, Mo.

Guest speaker was Reverend Tim Maxa, of the First Presbyterian Church, Lenox and Sharpsburg, Iowa.

Soloist Julie Scott sang "Ave Maria" and "Special Things".  She was accompanied on the piano by Diane Lange of Lenox, Iowa.

Interment was at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Iowa. He was buried next to his Great-Grandfather Frank Tillman under the

careful direction of Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa.

Afterwards a wonderful luncheon was provided and served by the Catholic Council of Women in the Social Hall at St. Patricks Church in Lenox.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Obed and Adea of Sharpsburg. His grandmother Beatrix Estrella Chavez of Celaya, Gto., Mexico. Grandparents Dorotha and Leroy Guthrie of Martinez, California, Jay and April Mains of Sharpsburg. Great Grandmothers Dorothy Mains and Jeanne Tillman of Sharpsburg. His Aunts and Uncles Eduardo and September (Oliveira) their sons Trinidad

Frances and Eduardo Alexander, Victor and Maria Estrella of Celaya, Gto., Mexico, John Ross Oliveira (wife Becky) of Vallejo,

California, Tammy Shawn Sure (husband Ron) son Ron, Jr. and daughter Katelin Darlene of Antioch, California. As well as many Great Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, 4 Great-Grandfathers and 2 Great-Grandmothers.

He brought us all great joy and love in his brief ten days here with us. Although he fought so bravely his battle to stay with us, our little one did not win this war. We take comfort in knowing he went to Our Lord in Heaven. We will Love him forever and we will miss him always until we all will meet again someday.

Heimke, Gary Allen -

Gary Allen Heimke was born August 24, 1945 to Harvey Fredrick and Kay N. (Patterson) Heimke in Creston, Iowa. He passed away on April 18, 1996. [Burial Clearfield, Iowa Cemetery]

Gary spent all his life in Clearfield, Iowa. Gary also graduated from the Clearfield area and then attended college in Maryville. After college he returned to farming.

On August 3, 1968, Gary married Juanita Rosa Baker. To this union was born one son, Mark.

Gary was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Heimke, and his mother in-law, Nina Baker.

Gary is survived by his wife Juanita of Clearfield; their son Mark of Creston; Gary's mother Kay Heimke of Clearfield; and his brother

Denny Heimke of Kent, as well as many friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 22, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa with Rev. Alan Rusk

officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Richard Longfellow and Mrs. Danny Kinder. Musical selections being "If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Wind Beneath My Wings".

Serving as pallbearers were Al Brammer, Doug Boyer, Jeff Wood, Brad Varner, Karl Swanson and Bob Swartwood.

Honorary pallbearers were Alan Larsen, Alvin Barker, Carroll Heimke, and Ronnie Hudson.

Wilson-Watson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John, Kenneth William -

Kenneth William John, the eldest son of William Kinsey and Esther (Van Camp) John, was born February 15, 1918 at a farm home near

Bedford, Iowa, and entered into rest at the Greater Community Hospital on May 20, 1996 at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 5 days.

He attended a rural school in Taylor County and graduated from Sharpsburg High School in 1935.

On May 4, 1938 he was united in marriage with Dorothy Robinson, and the couple was privileged to share 58 years together. This

marriage was blessed with the birth of two daughters, Dianne and Jeanne.

The couple lived on a farm near Sharpsburg for six years.  In 1946 they moved to a farm south of Lenox, where they continued to reside until 1981 when they moved to Lenox.

Kenneth was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, and served as a deacon and trustee for many years. He was a member of Noble Lodge

#458 and served as Past Master of Right Angle Lodge #348.

Surviving to honor his memory are his loving wife, Dorothy John of Lenox; two daughters, Dianne (husband Al) Heaberlin of Newton, Iowa

and Jeanne (husband Roger) Maharry of Ames; six grandchildren; Mother-in-law, Lulu Robinson; two brothers, Howard (wife Donna) John of

Des Moines and Ivan (wife Marilyn) of Ankeny as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents and a grandson, Mark James Parker.

Funeral services were held May 23, at the Lenox Christian Church with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating; Burial was in the North Fairview

Cemetery in Lenox.

Music was provided by Jan Bryant, Karen Shawler and Stacy Helm.

Casket Bearers were his grandsons, Randy Roeth, John Pretzer, Brian Cassidy, Michael Parker, and Douglas and Gregory Maharry.

A memorial has been established in Kenneth's name.

McCaughery, Geraldine K Boydsten -

Geraldine K McCaughey, 58, daughter of Gerald and Lorene (Phelan) Boydsten of 5915 N. W. Murray Circle, Johnston, died of a respiratory ailment March 31 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Services were held Wednesday, April 3, McLaren's Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.

Mrs. McCaughey was born near Sharpsburg and lived in the Des Moines area for 40 years. She was owner of Smokey's and Gerri's taverns in Des Moines.

Among survivors are her husband Don; her mother Lorene Boydsten; two sons, Phillip Dillon of Johnston and Bryan Dillon of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Janine Sturdivant of Johnston; three stepsons; two stepdaughters; sister Patty Richardson of Denver, Colo.;

and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Miller, Benne Clinton -

Benne Clinton Miller was born March 13, 1931 to George T. and Bessie R. (Smith) Miller, three and one-half miles west of Morton Mills,

Iowa.

He graduated from Villisca High School in 1949. While in High School, he played football and was an active member of the Reno Smith F.F.A. Chapter. From his early years on, Benne was always actively involved in agriculture.

Benne joined the service as a member of the U.S. Army in 1951 and was stationed in Lenggries, Germany. He was a Sergeant in the Dog Scout Platoon. He trained the scout dogs and patrolled the border for six months. He was then transferred to Heilbronn where

he continued to train the dogs. Benne loved working with and training the scout dogs. He was very proud to serve his country.

While in Germany, Benne met his wife, Gerda Brenner. In January 1954, he was honorably discharged and moved to Lenox, Iowa, where

he continued farming with his father.

Benne and Gerda were united in marriage February 16, 1954.

Benne joined the National Farmers Organization from its earliest beginning. He served as President of the Adams County N.F.O. for several years. He strongly believed in the family farm and hoped to see the day when the farmer could price his own product with cost of production plus a reasonable profit.

He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Benne died Saturday, March 30, 1996, at his home outside of Lenox from a sudden illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Benne is survived by his wife, Gerda, of Lenox; his two children: son Marvin James Miller and his wife Georgia of Lenox and daughter Shirley Doris Miller of Hastings, Iowa; two granddaughters, Brandie and Suzanne Miller of Grimes, Iowa; a sister, Josephine, and

her husband Ed L. Schomburg of Villisca, Iowa; nephew Jim Schomburg and his wife Jeannine and their children Jason and Jessica of Villisca, Iowa; niece Marjory Bradford and her husband Philip and their children Stephanie, Vicki, Robert and Tommy of Traskwood, Ark.

Farming and his family were Benne's happiness and way of life.

Visitation was held Tuesday evening at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Shreve officiating.

Kathryn Wilson was the organist and Brandie Miller as soloist provided music.

Serving as pallbearers were Gary Stoaks, Gary Freeman, Philip Preston, Kevin Sweeney, Neil Hamilton, and Dan Carruthers.

Honorary Pallbearers were Harlan Riley, Howard Stoaks, LaRell Wilkinson, Richard Riley, Robert Morris, Howard Rogers, Bill Reed, Ed

Schomburg, Darrell Reynolds, Richard Trucks, and Richard Collins.

Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

A memorial fund has been established in Benne Miller's name.

Preston, Alice Mary Haering -

Funeral services for Alice Mary Preston were held Wednesday, May 8 at 10:30 at the Lenox Christian Church.

Rev. Dena Woldruff officiated the services. Music was provided by Janice Christensen, pianist and Stacy Helm and Karen Shawler as

vocalist.

Casket Bearers were Jon Preston, Mark Preston, Mike Preston, Steven Preston, Philip Preston and Peter Preston.

Alice Mary Preston was born November 27, 1900 to John and Annis Hodges Haering at the Haering farm west of Lenox, Iowa and

entered into rest at the Lenox Care Center on May 6, 1996 at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 19 days.

She lived her entire life in the Lenox community. On May 5, 1920 she was united in marriage with Harry E. Preston and moved to the

Preston homestead one mile north of her birthplace. In 1983 this homestead received the century farm recognition at the State Fair in Des Moines.

Alice was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, she was also a member of the Lenox Christian Church, she received a certificate of

recognition for outstanding and dedicated service, having served as historian of the Lenox Christian Church for many years. She was a writer and a poet. She had the ability to describe lives with wit and humor. This ability gave her the opportunity to write for

celebrations and programs in the community and for friends and relatives.

She was honored as "First Lady of the Year" by Beta Sigma Phi International in 1978. She enriched many lives with her apt expressions and the ability to entertain with original and appropriate poetry, which won many honors in contests.

Surviving to honor her memory are her two sons; Norman (wife Jean) Preston of Liberty, Missouri and Carroll (wife Pat) of Santa Paula,

California, nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband Harry in 1977, a son Lowell in 1957, a granddaughter Allyson in 1982, one brother and one sister.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery. Larkin & Shelley Funeral Homes of Lenox was in charge of the arrangements.

Ryan, Bernice L Hunter -

Bernice Lucile Ryan was born July 11, 1910, at the home of her parents, James Alonzo (Lonnie) Hunter and Mayme Grace (Christy)

Hunter. Bernice graduated from high school and junior college.

On June 3, 1938, Bernice was united in marriage to Edward J. Ryan in Corning.  To this union a son, John Dee (Jack) and a daughter, Mary Virginia (Gingi) were born.

She passed away at the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield on April 4, 1996. All but the last four years of her 85 years, were spent in

Taylor County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie, in 1992; her parents; and one brother.

She is survived by her son, Jack (wife Karen) of Spencer, Iowa; daughter Gingi Haag (husband Robert), and 3 grandchildren, Cory, Michael and Jaclyn Haag of Orient.

Memorial services were held Saturday, April 6, 11 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating.

Jan Bryant, Wanona Dwyer, Cory Haag, Michael Haag and Jaclyn Haag provided music.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with Father Dan Siepker officiating.

A memorial fund has been established in Bernice's name.

Walston, Vane Edward -

Vane Edward Walston, son of Thomas Walter Walston and Cora Mae Weese Walston was born in Worth County Missouri on

October 1, 1911.

He departed this life April 23, 1996 at Corning, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 22 days.

The oldest son in a family of 11 children, Vane grew upon farms in Ringgold County where he also attended area schools and the Christian

Church.

On September 29, 1934 he was united in marriage to Thelma Loris Tamerius at the Christian parsonage in Bedford. During their nearly

62 years of marriage Vane and Thelma1 lived and farmed in Taylor County. They raised a family of nine children: Eddie, Ann, Janice, John, Bob, Karen, Glen, Teresa and David.

Not only was Vane a farmer, he was also a salesman. He started as a young boy traveling on horseback, selling garden seeds to neighbors. He continued to sell feed, seed, and the idea of rural water to area farmers for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Donald and Verle, two sisters who died in infancy and a son Eddie.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Thelma sons: John, of Hudson, New York; Bob, Glen and David all of Bedford. Daughters: Janice

Walston of Guthrie Center, IA; Ann Goudie, Karen Hensley and Teresa Murphy all of Bedford.

Brothers; Elvin, Bedford; Gerald of Jefferson, IA; and Marvin of Waverly, IA. Sisters:  Hazel Hoover, Coon Rapids, IA; Nina Rice, Boynton Beach, Florida; and Elsie Preston of Lenox.

He also leaves 24 grandchildren, 24 greatgrandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Vane was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford, where he once served as a trustee.

Weed, Marven Francis -

Marven Weed, the Taylor County Sheriff from 1973-1987, died Friday after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services for Weed, 71, were held Tuesday morning at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial was

in the Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Marven first entered law enforcement in 1958, and was appointed Deputy for Taylor County under Sheriff Leonard

Ratliff in 1968. He was elected as Sheriff in 1973 and retired from the position in May 1987.

Survivors include his wife Glenna and their children Donnie, Lonnie, Cindy Nally, Kathy Zadina, Kenny, and Shellie Carias.

Marven Francis Weed was born at Hebron, Iowa in Adair County, the son of Lonnie and Gertrude (Scott) Weed on March 19, 1925.

He died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on Friday May 17, 1998 at the age of 71.

Services were held at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford on Tuesday, May 21. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery in

Gravity with military rites.

Marven attended and graduated from Orient High School in 1943. He then entered the U.S. Navy until May of 1946.

Marven and his three brothers Dale, Lonnie and Gerald were in boot camp together and were the Color Guards for the Farragut-Idaho

Boot Camp. Upon completion of Boot Camp Marven and Lonnie were assigned to the U.S.S. Aaron Ward Destroyer. Upon arrival at Pearl Harbor, Lonnie was reassigned and Marven stayed on the U.S.S. Aaron Ward where he was involved in the South Pacific Campaign.

Upon his service discharge he enrolled at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo., where he graduated in 1952.

He was a member of the Bearcat football team playing fullback and earning all conference honors both his junior and senior years.

Marven was honored recently when he, as a member of 1948 Bearcat football team, was inducted into the "M" Club Hall of Fame.

On March 17, 1958 he was united in marriage to Glenna Lock at Troy, Kansas. To this union seven children were born: Donnie, Lonnie,

Cindy, Kathy, Kenny, Marla  (deceased 1971) and Shellie.

The family made their home in the Gravity and Bedford area.

Marven was a teacher and coach until 1958 when he entered law enforcement in Brighton, Colo. He returned to the Bedford/Gravity area where he worked for Dean Beemer.

In 1968 he was appointed Deputy for Taylor County under Leonard Ratliff, where he served until his election to the position of Taylor County Sheriff in 1973.

Marven was proud to serve as Sheriff of Taylor County until his retirement in May of 1987.

Marven was a past member of the Taylor County Fair Board and a former Lions Club Member.

He is survived by his wife Glenna of Bedford; son Donnie and wife Shannon of Bedford; son Lonnie and wife Brenda of Bedford; daughter Cindy Nally and husband Dan of Blockton; daughter Kathy Zadina and husband Bill of Corning; son Kenny and wife Michelle of New Market; daughter Shellie Carias and husband Carlos of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Josh, Jake, Lindsay, Ashley, Jackie, Zachary, Samantha and a Godchild, Amanda Garner.

He is also survived by six brothers, Franklin and wife Esther of Kansas City; Dale and wife Ruth of Creston; Lonnie and wife Jeane of

Phoenix, Ariz.; Gerald and wife Charlotte of Denver, Colo.; George and wife Peg of Norwalk; Don and wife Dottie of Danville, N.H.; five sisters, Evelyn and husband Ed Teague of Grand Saline, Texas; Flora and husband Rich Hayes of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Wanda and husband Don Loscke of St. Edwards, Neb.; Waneta Linger of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Ruth Cummins of Anaheim, Calif.; his in laws, Glen and Wilma Lock of Gravity; and brothers-in-law Denny and Myra Lock of Bedford and Larry Lock of Polk City; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Maria Mae.

Yearington, James Edward -

Funeral services were held at Roland Lindsay Powers Funeral Home in Corning on Tuesday April 16 for James Edward Yearington.

Rev. Jeanne Groom officiated the services.

Pallbearers were Bill Yearington, Edward Yearington, Michael Yearington, Jeffrey Yearington, Richard Bohanan, Ray Bohanan, Steve Cross and Carlton Bohanan.

James Edward was born March 8, 1914 in Adams County to Edward James and Ollie (Parrott) Yearington.

He was united in marriage to Hazel Irene Bohanan On February 26, 1936 in Corning. To this union was born two daughters Linda

and Ruth.

He was a farmer by occupation and lived most of his life in Adams and Union counties. He lived north of Prescott until he and Hazel

moved to Creston where they lived for 14 years, before moving to Corning 1991 and to Lenox in 1995.

He passed away at his home in Lenox April 13, 1996 leaving to cherish his memory his wife Hazel, daughters Linda Hardisty of Corning and Ruth (Russell) Stuedle of Otterville, Missouri; A brother Charles (Phyllis) Yearington of Corning and sisters Vera (Olin) Kimball of Corning, Alice Cross of Green River, Wyoming, and Wilma Gardner of Lake Elsinore, California; a sister-in-law June Yearington of Corning; 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Clifford, Rokell (Kelly) and Melvin (Mick) and two sisters Bernice Russell and Betty Nolte.

Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Prescott.

Memorials may be directed to the Prescott United Church or Alzheimer's Association.
