Beemer, Vivian Lou Longfellow -

Funeral services for Vivian Beemer, age 82 of Bedford, who died Tuesday, March

31, 2009 at the Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri were held Friday,

April 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment was held

in the Conway Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford Volunteer

Ambulance Fund. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.

com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Vivian Lou Beemer, age 82, of Bedford, IA was born October 31, 1926. She was the

oldest of nine children, all of which were born on the family farm (Science Ridge) near

Blockton, Iowa.

She attended Science Ridge Country School and then lived with her paternal

grandparents in Bedford so she could attend Bedford High School. In 1942, she

was baptized into the First Baptist Church.

Vivian married Virgil (Joe) Beemer August 30, 1943 in Maryville, Missouri. To this

union five children were born: Bryan Lou, Donna, Bob, Paul and Terry.

Vivian lived on numerous farms in Taylor County where she worked hand in hand with

Virgil in the farming operation. Much to the dismay of the kids, better known as the

'little chicken pluckers', she supplemented their income by raising and dressing

thousands of chickens. After her 'little chicken pluckers' flew the coop, she

substituted Fuller Brush for chickens. Later, she also ran the Conway Cafe for

several years.

Some of the more trying times include the years Bob and Paul were in Vietnam and

the 1971 Conway tornado, which destroyed their home. As the tornado approached,

she was clipping a poodle, and in her excitement she dropped the poodle and carried

the clippers in to the cave. When leaving the cave and seeing her home destroyed

she became very concerned about their neighbor, Beulah Jones, who was confined to

a wheelchair. She enjoyed being outdoors and caring for the livestock, especially her

dogs and puppies. It wasn't uncommon for her to have an orphaned pup laying on a

heating pad in a box beside her chair.

Special times included their 50th and 60th wedding anniversary, birthday parties,

extended family gatherings and the birth of each grandchild.

Left to cherish Vivian's memory are her children: Donna and husband Bob Walston

of Bedford; Bob and wife Sue Beemer of Laramie, Wyoming; Paul and wife Susan

Beemer of Maryville; and Terry and wife Janet Beemer of Clarinda; nine grandchildren:

Dan Walston, of Bedford; Tammy and husband Erik Peterson of Bedford; Scott Walston

of Des Moines; Rick Hower of Mount Ayr; Kyla and husband Steve Montoya of Laramie,

Wyoming; Deb and husband James Bonde of Blockton; Jim and wife Johnna Beemer of

Maryville; Jesse Beemer and Mandy of Gravity; Kalli Beemer of Clarinda; eighteen great-

grandchildren; three brothers: Marvin and wife Lil Longfellow of Bedford; J R and

wife Dot Longfellow of Walhalla, South Carolina; Alan and wife Eloise Longfellow

of Blockton; three sisters; Doris Gillette of Danville, Iowa; Arlene and husband Deke

Mecham of Austin, Texas; Wilma and husband Doug Jackson of Bedford; a sister-in-

law Betty Longfellow of Bedford; and a brother-in-law, James Rogers

of Walhalla, South Carolina; along with her extended Beemer family.

Preceding Vivian in death are her husband, Virgil Beemer; an infant son, Bryan Lou

and a still born child; grandson Benjamin Beemer; parents, Harry and Erma Longfellow;

a brother, Charles Longfellow; a sister, Lois Rogers and brother-in-law Dean Gillette.

Vivian will be missed by her entire family and many friends.

We will hold the memories of her gentle spirit and wisdom as a wonderful gift.

She will live on in our hearts forever.

responsibility early in life for helping his family. Later, Darrell joined the Civilian

Conservation Corps and sent all but $1.00 of his monthly check home. He also

worked in the Carbon coal mines.

Darrell met Marjorie Morris, a rural school teacher in the Lenox area, at the Fall

1941 Iowa State Teachers' Convention in Des Moines. He played a trick on her that

weekend by tying her shoestrings in knots. Darrell then asked Marjorie if he could

come to Lenox to see her. The following weekend, Marjorie saw him driving his car

on Main Street looking for her. After falling in love, they eloped and were married

on August 23, 1942 at the Methodist Parsonage in Rockport, Missouri.

areas. Darrell also remodeled several churches including the Lenox United Methodist

Church and Mercer Center United Methodist Church. Evident in every home, church,

and business that he worked on, is the great pride that Darrell took in his work.

In November 1947, Darrell and Marjorie had twin daughters, Connie and Kathie.

Always having a great sense of humor, Darrell told others he got two for the price

of one and had requested that Marjorie have them on the weekend so he

would not miss any work.

Darrell was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge,

Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign War.

After retiring, Darrell and Marjorie enjoyed traveling and camping with friends

and family. They first purchased a trailer, then a motor home and began spending

winters in Arizona, Nevada, California, and everywhere else Darrell said that little

trailer would go.

Darrell's faith and family were most important in his life. Left to cherish Darrell's

memories are his loving wife of 66 years, Marjorie Reynolds of Lenox, Iowa and

14, 2009 in Wichita, Kansas were held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the

United Methodist Church in Bedford. Interment was held in the Lexington Cemetery.

Memorials can be directed to his church or the Bedford Ambulance Service.

Memories can be shared with the family at www. ritchiefuneralhome.com.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Junior Dale Schuelke was born February 10, 1926 to Richard Edward and Mary Audra

(Dimick) Schuelke at Greenwood, Nebraska. Junior initially attended country schools,

and graduated in 1945 from Waverly High School, Waverly Nebraska. Following

graduation he and a classmate followed the wheat harvest in Kansas and Colorado

during the summer of 1945.

Returning to the Greenwood area, he started farming with his father. Junior

met Doris Hanson who was working as a secretary in Lincoln. Junior and Doris were

united in marriage on December 2, 1951 in Wahoo, Nebraska. To this union five

children were born: Mark, Steve, Brian, Dennis and Linda.

They farmed from 1951 to January 1958 near Ashland, Nebraska. Three straight

drought years 1953, '54, & '55 caused them to lose their corn crop those years.

In 1956 they purchased a farm in Iowa near Bedford, and on January 28th, 1958

they moved to the Bedford farm. Junior continued farming until his retirement

in 2002.

Junior dedicated his life to farming and conservation of the soil. Recognizing the

real need for conservation practices on his farm, he purchased a tiling machine in

the sixties and installed tile lines, waterways, and constructed terraces to control

erosion. Friends and neighbors witnessed these improvements and began asking

Junior to establish them on their farms in the area. Thus, the business known as

Schuelke Tiling emerged. This drainage work functioned as a sideline to farming,

raising cattle and hogs. In the mid-sixties, he built one of the first hog

confinement finishing buildings in Taylor County.

In 1979, the oldest son, Mark, returned to farm in the Bedford area and also

joined the tiling business. Junior and Mark operated the business until 1990 when

Mark took over the business.

An integral part of the farming and tiling business was the farm shop in which

Junior built and repaired machinery. He enjoyed welding, building metal items,

and performing mechanical repairs and overhauls. Upon retirement he had time

to learn woodworking and each Christmas made gifts for the children and

grandchildren.

Junior was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. For ten years,

he was the leader of the Dogpatch Farmers 4-H Club of Conway, Iowa. He was

a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and enjoyed camping at the Iowa State

Fair while driving shuttle buses. Junior was a member of the Iowa Land

Improvement Contractors Association, where he served as Southwest Iowa

District vice-president and president in the years 1982-1984.

He and Doris enjoyed RV traveling. They traveled to all 50 states, as well as

traveling abroad to Europe, the Orient, Australia, Mexico, North Africa,

Central America, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, The couple especially

enjoyed their two trips to Sweden to visit Doris's relatives, and to New

Zealand to visit friends they met at the Iowa State Fair. Preceding Junior in

death were his parents Richard and Mary Audra, brothers Dick and Loren,

sisters Bernice, Lois, and Edna.

Left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife, Doris, four sons, Mark and

wife Gloria, Steve and wife Lisa, Brian, Dennis and wife Judy, and one daughter,

Linda England and husband Victor. Grandchildren include Bonnie (Schuelke)

Ramsey and husband Theo, Zebulon Schuelke and wife Andrea, Greg Schuelke,

Ben Schuelke, Jenny Schuelke, and Spencer Schuelke. His great grandchildren

are Grason and Greenly Ramsey, and Jobe Schuelke. A number of dear nieces and

nephews also mourn his passing.

Junior was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and friend to many. He enjoyed camping,

fishing and boating at Sun Valley Lake with his children and grandchildren, as well

as playing cards and country music. He played drums in high school band and learned

to play the guitar. He enjoyed playing and singing for his children.

When the children were raised and left home, he and Doris became "snowbirds,"

traveling to Arizona and the Alamo Rec-Veh Park in Alamo, Texas for 25 winters.

He began to play in park jams .and hosted the jams at Alamo Rec for seven years.

Having struggled with numerous health issues over the past several years, Junior

died of a severe heart attack on April 14 in Wichita, Kansas. His family was present.

Junior will surely be missed by all for many years to come.

Junior was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and steward of the land,

'His enthusiasm, humor, insight and kindness will be missed by his family.
