John, Lyle F-

Depending on how different Lenox area residents view monumental times, Monday, August 19, was a day to remember or

a day to forget. Whichever, it brought the passing of two Lenox area residents who didn't have much in common. Lyle

John recently retired after more than 50 years in the lumber business in Lenox. Seth Thompson was looking forward to

his first year at Lenox High. They did have something in common; both passed away on that same August day.

The passing of Lyle John, age 80, was not necessarily unexpected but was nonetheless emotional news for Lenox area

residents. Lyle, who had battled cancer for nearly a year, first came to Lenox in 1950 and was active in numerous business

and civic activities.

Funeral services for Lyle John will be held Thursday, August 22, 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox American Legion Hall. Visitation will

be Wednesday, August 21, 3-8 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. The family will be present from 7-8 p.m. on visitation

night. Survivors include his wife, Lucile, and their children, Steve John and Linda Harbin of Lenox, Danny John of Tiffin, Iowa, and

Roger John of Odessa, Mo.

Lyle was born in Hardin, Mont. On Feb. 4, 1922. He moved to Lenox in 1950 and went to work for Eclipse Lumber. The

facility was later destroyed by fire, but Lyle continued in the lumber business in Lenox when Country Boys lumber yard was

established. That business later became Lenox Lumber Co., which is still in operation at 202 East Temple.

During his years in Lenox, Lyle was a member of the Lenox Rotary Club, Lenox American Legion Post, the Lenox Chamber of

Commerce, and the Lenox Volunteer Fire Department. One of his most permanent contributions may have been made when he and

George Reynolds teamed to begin the Little League baseball program in the community.

Most recently, Lyle and his wife Lucile were able to enjoy their 60th wedding anniversary on August 8.

Lyle was also proud to attend this year's Memorial Day dedication of the Veterans Memorial Monument at the Lenox City

Park. A veteran of European and North African campaigns in World War II, Lyle was instrumental in the American Legion and

Auxiliary campaign to establish that monument. The monument dedication service was the subject of a Memorial Day feature

article in the Des Moines Register. One veteran noted that, at that time, none of the veterans who worked on the project

were eligible for their names to be placed on the monument. Only the names of deceased veterans are eligible for

placement on the monument.

Lenox area residents wish it wasn't so, but the name of Lyle John is now eligible.
