Beck, Emma Bertha -

Emma Bertha Beck died June 21, 1996 at Heartland Centre in St. Joseph, Missouri at age 103.

She was born on a farm southwest of Lenox, Iowa and attended rural schools in Taylor County. At age 18 she

moved to St. Joseph, Missouri where she graduated from Platt-Gard Business school. For the next fifty years she was

employed by Pimbly, Paint and Glass Company. Later she worked for Richardson Plumbing until her retirement.

She belonged to the Business and Professional Womens Club and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in St.

Joseph where she taught Sunday School for over eighty years. She was a spiritual inspiration to her students, her

friends and her family. During the twenty two years at Heartland Centre West she was the unofficial Chaplain

bringing comfort and joy to many other residents.

Services were held at the Meierhoffer-Fleeman Chapel in St. Joseph on June 24, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Patrick M.

Braddy of Greeley, Colorado officiating. Later in the day many of the Beck family that were unable to attend the

services in Missouri, gathered at Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa for a brief graveside memorial.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip G. and Barbara Sagar Beck, two sisters, Mary Morris and Rose

Beck, five Brothers, George, Charles, Albert, Johnny and Herman Beck.

She will be fondly remembered and missed by her surviving nieces and nephews.

Browning, Maxine Marian Hamner -

Funeral services for Maxine Browning were held Saturday, June 22, 1996 at the Lenox Christian Church with

Rev. Dena Woldruff as Pastor. [Burial North Fairview]

Music was provided by Jan Bryant, organist.

Casket Bearers were Reed Helm, Mike Clem, Mike Eagan, Jerry O'Neill, Billy Browning and Jerry Browning.

Honorary Bearers were Art Eklund, Raymond Jones, Kenny Bolinger, Elbert Pidcock, Hubert Davenport,

and Kenneth Caldwell.

Maxine Marian Browning was born the daughter of Max and Mary Miller Hamner on July 2, 1918 in Creston, Iowa

and entered into rest at the Lenox Care Center June 20, 1996 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 18 days.

She attended school at Creston High School and worked in the family furniture store. On April 25, 1937 she

was united in marriage with Ray Browning at the First Christian Church in Creston by Reverend E.E. Lister. One

son, William Max blessed this union. Ray and Maxine enjoyed 59 years together.

Maxine was employed in several restaurants and operated her own cafe, known as Maxine's Cafe for 10 years.

Ray and Maxine continued to make their home in Creston where they were active members of the First Christian

Church serving as a Deaconess and C.W.F. officer for many years. In August of 1978 they moved to Lenox,

transferring their membership to the Lenox Christian Church, continuing to serve as a deaconess for several years.

Maxine was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodges of Creston.

Surviving to honor her memory are her husband, Ray Browning of Lenox, son; Bill (wife Judy) Browning of

Lenox, three grandchildren; Billy Browning of Lenox, Jerry (wife Wanda) Browning of Prescott, and Joni O'Neill of

Villisca, eight, great grandchildren; Jeremy, Angela and Corey Browning, Robert Moss, Tonya, Tabitha, Tiffany

and Tracy O'Neill, a sister Katharine Young of Creston and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hamner of Villisca and

Margaret Dust of Greenfield as well as many Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, 2 brothers; Russell (Buck) Hamner and Etna Max Hamner.

Memorials may directed to the Lenox Christian Church.

Gillespie, Jessie Irene Henderson Hufnagel -

Jessie Irene Gillespie, 78, of North Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Lenox, died of heart failure, June 10, 1996 at

North Kansas City Hospital.

Services were Wednesday, June 12 at 1:30 at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center, Kansas, with burial at the

Logue Cemetery in Leroy, Kansas.

Irene was born July 3, 1917 at Sharpsburg, Iowa to Jess and Ida Henderson. She graduated from Lenox High School.

In December 1934 she married Lester Hufnagel. They had two daughters; Joyce Walton of North Kansas City

and Judy Landrum of North Kansas City.

On June 28, 1948 she married Ralph Gillespie. They made their home in Yates Center, Kansas until July of 1995 when

they moved to North Kansas City.

Survivors include Joyce and Judy, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandson, and

one brother Raymond Henderson of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Glenn, Merle and Carroll, and husbands Lester in 1992 and

Ralph in 1996.

Godden, Velma Haas -

Velma Godden, former residence of Lenox, passed away of natural causes on May 26, 1996, at age 84.

She was the daughter of Bertha and Fred Haas of Lenox, and was united in marriage to Stanley Godden, also of Lenox.

Velma lived the greatest share of her life in Lenox, working for many years at the local bank.

After her retirement in 1974, she moved to suburban Chicago to live near her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Doug Calvin and their

children. She also moved with the family to London, England in 1976 and to the New York City area in 1992.

At the time of her death, Velma was residing in suburban Milwaukee, having moved there when the family relocated in 1994.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, both of her parents and her sisters, Glenna and Bernice.

Surviving her is Lynn and Doug, their children: Todd and wife Karen, Kristine and husband Richard, and Mitchell; her great-grandchildren, Ryan, Bradley and Ashley; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Brief graveside services were held Saturday, July 6th at East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox for Velma M. Godden.

Velma, a former resident of Lenox, passed away of natural causes on May 26, 1996.

Gordon, Conie Rose Preston -

Services for Conie Gordon were held Saturday, July 6, 1996 at the Lenox Methodist Church.

Officiating the service was Audrey Westendorf. Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart,

organist and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker as vocalist.

Casket Bearers were Jerry Adams, Dale Gordon, Jay Preston, Joe Fleharty, Rodney Fleharty

and Randall Fleharty. Honorary Casket Bearers were Mark Preston, Doug Spicer and Brian Preston.

Conie Rose Gordon was born November 13, 1937, the daughter of Fletcher and Helen Dodge

Preston in rural Mt. Etna and entered into rest on July 3, 1996 at the Mercy Hospital in Corning at

the age of 58 years, 7 months and 20 days.

She graduated from Corning High School in 1955.

On August 1, 1958 she was united in marriage with Russell Gordon at the Methodist Church in Mt Etna,

Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of three children; Vicki, Tod and Ted.

Conie worked for over 20 years at the A.S.C.S. Office in Corning. She lived and worked on the family

farm near Sharpsburg, Iowa

She was an active member of the Lenox Methodist Church, the Jolly Club, the Bridge Club and the

Night Circle of the Lenox Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing and crafts, was

very active in her children's activities and lover the time she spent with her grandchildren.

Surviving to honor her memory is her husband, Russell Gordon of Sharpsburg; her mother, Helen Preston of

Corning; her daughter, Vicki (husband Jeff) of Cherokee, Iowa; her two sons, Tod (wife Alice) Gordon of Marion,

Kansas and Ted (wife Kysa) Gordon of Lenox; six grandchildren, Chelsea, Kendra and Paige Sogard and Toni,

Luke and Whitney Gordon; two sisters, Shirley Fleharty of Massena and Rita Preston of Des Moines; two

brothers, Leo Preston of New London, Iowa and Morris (Jan) Preston of Donahue, Iowa; a brother-in-law

Darold (wife Vesta) Gordon of Creston; sister-in-law Verlee (Lew) Eckels of Lenox.

Preceding her in death are her father Fletcher Preston; brother-in-law Roy Fleharty; grandparents Grover

and Ruby Dodge and Steve and Lillian Preston; niece Helen Louise Eckels and nephew Jerry Fleharty.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with Larkin & Shelley Funeral Homes of Lenox

in charge of the arrangements.

Jennings, Geraldine Hargin (Jeri) Brown Higdon -

Geraldine (Jeri) Hargin Jennings passed away May 29, 1996, at the Los Robles hospital in Thousand Oaks, California.

Jeri was born June 16, 1925 near Merle Junction, Conway, Iowa to Alice (Chaney) and John A. Hargin. As a child and young woman

she lived in the Conway and Lenox area.

In 1942 she married Ludlo Brown and they lived near Lenox until they both entered military service. She served in the WAVES until April 1946 when she received her honorable discharge from the Naval Hospital Base at Corona, California. Her first marriage

ended in divorce.

In 1955 she married Arthur M. Higdon of Des Moines. They became the parents of two adopted children. They lived for a short

time in Lenox, then moved to Des Moines and finally to Dallas, Texas where Mr. Higdon passed away in 1985.

In 1986, she married Earl Jennings in Thousand Oaks, California, where they made their home.

She is survived by her husband Earl, son John Higdon (wife Chris) of Calabasas, California and daughter Janine Gilbert of

Carrollton, Texas, twin granddaughters Brandi and Candi Gilbert, step-daughter and husband Suzanne and Denni Welch of Thousand

Oaks, California, one sister Pauline Miller of Lenox, an aunt Hazel Hargin of the Lenox Care Center, Uncle and Aunt Robert and Irene Chaney of Des Moines and many cousins in the Lenox Area.

Memorials are being made to the Diabetes Foundation to further research.

Keast, Donald Raymond -

Donald Raymond Keast Sr., 67, of Lenox died June 21, 1996, at Alegent Health, Mercy Hospital in Corning.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with the Rev. Robert Shreve officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

Donald was born July 5, 1928, in Macedonia to Raymond Henry and Susie  (James) Keast. He graduated from Macedonia High School

in 1945.

As a young man he owned a cafe and a small fleet of rock trucks. In 1940 he joined the U.S. Army and served two years during the Korean Conflict.

On August 15, 1954 he married E. Jane Glenn in Macedonia.

Following military service he purchased the Lenox Cafe, which he operated from 1953 to 1959, and brought his fleet of rock trucks to the Lenox area.

In 1969, he purchased and operated the International Harvester dealership as Keast Truck and Tractor. He operated this business in

addition to rock and lime trucks until retiring in April 1989. He served as a Lenox City Councilman for 20 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Volunteer Fire Department and the Rotary Club in Lenox.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Keast of Lenox; a son, Donald (wife Eileen) Keast Jr. of Lenox; three daughters, Deborah (husband Steve) Lilly of Greenfield, Darcy (husband Andrew) Rubenking of Council Bluffs and Darla (husband Scott) Helm of Bellevue, Neb.;

a sister, Bonnie (husband Gene) Parker of Hesperia, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.

Memorials may be directed to the Lenox Ambulance Service or the United Methodist church.

Casket Bearers were Max Bisbe, Bill Young, Berle Scott, Kevin Barker, Connie Barker and Merle Davenport.

Honorary Bearers were the Lenox Rotary Club.

Keller, Lois M Clayton -

Services were held June 29, 1996 at the Diehl Funeral Home in Mt. Wolf, Penn., for Lois M. (Clayton) Keller

formerly of Lenox. [Died June 23, 1996]

The service was officiated Rev. Dale Thrush from the Mt. Washington United Brethren Church.

Lois was born in Lenox, Iowa on April 28, 1921 to Harry and Maybelle (Sage) Clayton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Dr. James S. Keller.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth Beaverson of Dover, Pa., and Marcia Herman of Newark, Delaware;

one brother, C.C. Clayton of California; and one sister, Dorothy Immel of Des Moines.

Burial was in the Cassel's Cemetery in Newberry Township.

Lyddon, Elvia Rachel Swisher -

Elvia Lyddon was born September 12, 1899, in Orient to Joseph and Ida Hakson Swisher.

Elvia graduated from Conway High School in 1918. She then taught school for a couple of years. On June 3, 1920, she married Raymond V. Lyddon. They farmed until 1927 when they moved to Clearfield. Elvia and Ray worked at the Glenwood State School before retiring. They spent many winters in Glendale, Arizona.

Elvia was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 1980 and by two sisters. Elvia is survived by her daughter Phyllis O'Conner of

Baltimore, Maryland, and a son Robert Lyddon of Hot Springs, Arkansas, as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Elvia passed away May 20, 1996, at the Greenspring Nursing Center in Baltimore at the age of 96. She had been a resident there since 1987.

Services were held Friday, May 24, 1996, at the Clearfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.

Burial was at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Matheny, Ruth -

Services for Ruth Matheny of Lenox were held at Rainbow Park in Creston Saturday, July 6, 1996.

Ruth passed away February 3, 1996 after a battle with cancer.

Dena Woldruff officiated the services. Music was provided by the Southside Boosters Kitchen Band of

which Ruth had been a member.

Minnick, Kory Dean -

Kory Dean Minnick, age 27, Mediapolis, Iowa and most recently of Hope Haven, died Wednesday, July 3, 1996 at the

Burlington Medical Center.

The son of Hal and Karen (Stoaks) Minnick, he was born January 28, 1969 at Burlington. He attended local schools and

graduated from Central Avenue School in Burlington. Since moving to Hope Haven, he worked at ADP in Burlington. He was a

member of the Mediapolis First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his parents of Mediapolis; 1 sister Kayla Dahms of Davenport; grandparents Mr. and Mrs.

Homer Minnick of Kent, Iowa; Mrs. Sere Stoaks of Lenox, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Gene Stoaks.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, 1996 at 9:30 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church in

Mediapolis with Rev. Dick Reynolds officiating. Interment was in Kossuth Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Hope Haven, Mediapolis Methodist Church, or the Mediapolis Community

Ambulance Service.

Music was provided by Korkee Carruthers, organist, and Carrie Carruthers and Anne Reynolds, vocalists.

Casket bearers were Brett Christensen, Bryce Christensen, Leo Schulte, Larry Nelson, Ivan Rector and Richard Hammond.

Oxley, Mable P Hixson -

Funeral services for Mable Oxley were held June 3, 1996 at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. She was born to Burt and Mary Hixson on September 8, 1897 near Gravity, Iowa and departed this life at Bedford Manor Nursing Home in Bedford on May 31, 1996. Due to the death of her Mother when she was a small girl, she grew up in the farm home of her Grandmother Rachel Beery near Gravity.

On December 26, 1917 she was married to E. Leon Oxley. They moved to their farm west of Sharpsburg and lived there until moving to

Sharpsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 19, 1971, her sisters Olive Blood and Eula Kurth, son-in-law Harold Bailey and grandson Kenneth Bailey.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Freda Bailey of Bedford; son, Paul and wife Jenola Oxley of Sharpsburg; grandchildren;

Howard Bailey, Linda Dittemore, Diana Baak and Terry Booth; great grandchildren Christine Bailey, Doug Bailey, Jeff Bailey, Mike

DeAnda, Rick Dittemore, Scott Dittemore, Yvonne Lovitt, Jamie Wymore, Kindra Booth and Kasey Booth; great-greatgrandchildren;

Stephen and Matthew Lovitt and Hailie Wymore. A sister-in-law Hazel Oxley, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Interment was in Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Reid, Robert George -

Robert George "Bob" Reid was born September 14, 1925, in Omaha, Ne., to George Dewey and Albina Holik Reid. He was an only child. He

attended school in Omaha and entered the military December, 1943. He served in the South Philippines during World War II and was awarded the American Theatre of Operations Service Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation

Service Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on April 17, 1946.

After his discharge, Bob went to work for Storz Brewery Co, in the advertising department. He later opened a distributorship for Storz in Creston.

In 1950, Bob was united in marriage to Frances Anne Kleckner. To this union 2 daughters were born; Mary Frances Reid Baker

and Robin Raye Reid Allar, On his birthday, September 14, 1967, Bob married Flossie Kleckner Calvin and they made their home in Clearfield where he lived until his death.

During his life in Clearfield, Bob worked for Bailey Seed Co. and then Longfellow Drilling Company. After an on the job injury and

a bout with cancer, Bob retired from Longfellow Drilling in early 1980.

Bob was a member of Woodside Post #97, American Legion in Clearfield V.F.W. Post in Bedford, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and wife Flossie. Left to mourn are his daughters Mary and husband Jerry Baker of Clearfield, Ia. and Robin and her husband David Allar of Tilton, New Hampshire and grandchildren Calib and Ethan Baker and

Heather and Nicholas Allar, many other relatives and lifelong friends.

Bob passed away June 9, 1996, and services for him were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield on Thursday, June 13, 1996, at 10:30 am. with Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.

Music was provided by Marlene Longfellow and Deb Briggs.

Pallbearers were Jim Butler, Steve Page, Alan Larsen, Richard Longfellow, George Bailey, Jr. and Dick Brammer.

Honorary Pallbearers were Glen Larsen, Bill Stuart, JB Routh, George Bailey, Sr., Ivan Longfellow and Alvin Barker.

There was Military Graveside Rites by Woodside Post #97 American Legion.

Bob was laid to rest at the Bethel Cemetery in Diagonal, Iowa, with Wilson-Watson Funeral Home.

Towe, Harriet L Soma-

Harriet L. Towe died Saturday, June 1, at Mt. Grand General Hospital in Hawthorne, Nevada.

Mrs. Towe was born September 3, 1924 in Wahoo, Neb. She lived most of her life in Iowa and Missouri before coming to Nevada in 1971.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Irondale, Missouri. She retired from Mt. Grant General Hospital as a C.N.A. in 1990. She was an accomplished artist.

She was preceded in death by a son Charles in 1949; her parents Fred Soma and Ruby Scott Soma; her brothers Robert Soma and Jack Soma, and her twin sister Helen Petty.

She is survived by her husband, James Towe; son Tom Henderson of Reno, Nevada; daughter Helen Marie Thurman of St. Charles, Mo.;

3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sisters Eythe Hall of Mariposa, Calif., Vernelle French of Irondale, Mo., Hildred Helm of Lenox, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

A Scholarship for the arts is being established in her name. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Mineral County High School in 1997. Memorials may be sent to the Harriet Towe Scholarship for the Arts, Hawthorne Credit Union, P.O. Box 2288, Hawthorne, NV 89415.

No funeral service is planned. Cremation is under the direction of the Gunter Funeral Home in Hawthorne, Nevada.

White, Thelma Buxton Bethke -

Graveside Services for Thelma White, 90, of Tyler, Texas were held Friday, July 12, 1996 at West Fairview

Cemetery in Lenox. Rev. Tim Maxa conducted the services.

Thelma was born in Lenox, October 15, 1905 to Robert and Mary (Woodward) Buxton. She was united in

marriage to Edward Bethke June 22, 1927 and P. Joseph White on November 28, 1946.

She was beauty operator in Lenox, Red Oak and Cherokee, Iowa.

Left to honor her memory are her daughters Phyllis Johnson of Ottumwa, Iowa and Juanita Connell of Tyler,

Texas, 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
