Gladys
Batter, age 86, of Ephrata, Washington, died Saturday, December 24, 1983. Mrs Baxter was born in Lenox,
Iowa
on April 2, 1897 to Charles and Mary Trost Scott.
She
was united in marriage with Joe Baxter in 1916 in Lenox.
Gladys
was employed as the operator for the Clearfield Telephone Exchange for many
years and was also an employee
of
the Clearfield Nursing Home for some time, prior to retiring and moving to
Washington in 1979.
She
was a sixty-five year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Clearfield and
a charter member of the Christian
Church
there.
Her
husband preceded her in death in 1966.
Survivors
include a daughter, Doris Nelson of Ephrata; a son, Kenneth of Seattle,
Washington; two brothers, Harry Scott of
Sequim,
Washington and Glen Scott of Mesa, Arizona; two sisters, Leona Harding of Lenox
and Golda Carey of Neosho,
Missouri;
two grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.
Services
were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28 at the Christian Church in
Clearfield with Reverend Roger
Graff
officiating. Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery.
A
memorial has been established to the church.

Born
August 31, 1891 at Prescott, Iowa to William E. and Mary Elizabeth Pottinger Wood, Bess died on Saturday,
December
10, 1983 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning at the age of 92 years, 3 months and
9 days.
Bess
attended country schools in the Prescott area where she spent her childhood
days. On March 11, 1914, she was united
in
marriage to Joe Brown at the Wood family home north of Prescott. They were the parents of two sons, LaVern and
Alvin
(Shorty).
At
an early age. Bess joined the Prescott Christian Church and later transferred
her membership to the Lenox
Christian
Church. In 1918, Bess and Joe moved to a farm north of Lenox where they spent
the remainder of their married life .
Bess
resided with Shorty and family for a time and then moved to Lenox in 1968. She
spent several winters in Arizona
with
her son, LaVern and family. She became a resident of
the Lenox Care Center in May of 1983.
Bess
was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 1965, her parents, three brothers,
Chester, Ralph and Frank Wood;
three
sisters, Grace, who died in infancy, Avanelle Brown
and Faye James; a grandson, Rodney Charles Brown in 1954 and a greatgrandson,
Jeremy Wade Maharry in 1973.
Surviving
are her sons, LaVern and wife, Arda of Tempe, Arizona; Alvin (Shorty) and wife Lois of Lenox; two sisters,
Mrs Gene (Ila) Bray and Mrs. Bud (Eva) Anderson, both of Prescott, eight
grandchildren: Diana Maharry, Jolene Brown,
Kurt
Brown, and Tacy Samo, all
of Lenox, Cindy Hewett of Pueblo, Colorado, Allen Brown, Rick Brown and Arlinda Adams of
Arizona;
21 greatgrandchildren, several nieces, nephews and
other relatives and friends.
Funeral
rites were conducted on December 13 at the Lenox Christian Church with Pastor
Jack Cutbirth officiating.
Music
was by Phil Brown, vocalist, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and
"Gentle Shepherd" accompanied by organist, Mildred Walter.
Casket
bearers were Ricky, Allen, Kurt and Stan Brown, Kirk and Rod Maharry.
Interment
was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Prescott.
A
memorial fund has been established for the Lenox church.

Davison, age 82, died at her home on Thursday evening, December 12.

was the daughter of Ben D. and Mary E. Powell Tall and was born April 28, 1901
in Bedford, Iowa. She died at her
home
in Lenox on December 22,. 1983 after a lengthy illness at the age of 82 years,
7 months and 24 days.
Sarah
was united in marriage with Harvey Eujean Davison on
April 27, 1921 in Maryville, Missouri. During the first years
of
their marriage, the couple resided in the Bedford area, moving to Prescott in
1941. They resided there and farmed
until
moving to Lenox four years ago.
Mrs.
Davison was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Betty Sumerhays; two sons-in-law, John Sumerhays
and
William Worrell: two sisters, Ethel Blancord and
Vinnie Skinner; one brother, Claudie Tall: two
grandchildren,
Eddie
Davison and Roger Jon Sumerhays: and several greatgrandchildren.
Survivors
include her husband, Harvey of the Bedford Manor in Bedford, Iowa; six
children, Herman and wife,
Bernice
of Modesta, California; Leota Phiffer and husband, Frank of Yuma, Arizona; Harley
and wife, Tilda of Vanduser,
Missouri;
Donald and wife, Betty Lou of Monoreville,
Pennsylvania; Jerry and wife, Sharon of Perris. California; and
Kuren Gustad and husband, Dennis of Jeffers, Minnesota; 23
grandchildren and several greatgrandchildren; and

relatives
and friends.
Sarah
was an active member of the Lenox Christian Church long as her health permitted
and was a member of the
Prescott
Methodist Church prior to that. She loved and took pride in her family around
which she centered her entire life.
She
will be remembered for her plants, gardening, crocheting and sewing, and the
many lovely pieces she gave to others
with
love. She always gave of herself to others.
Final
rites were conducted on December 27 at the Lenox Christian Church with the
Reverend Elmer West officiating.
Music
was by Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck, vocalists. Norma Paymal was organist. Selections were "How
Great
Thou Art" and "The Lord is My Shepherd".
Casket
bearers were Joe Harvey, Bob Sumerhays, Jim Thrasher,
Larry Hansen, Kevin Smith, and Dennis Gustad.
Interment
was in the Lexington Cemetery in Bedford. Iowa.

Dorothy Mae Higgins, 79.
She
was the daughter of John and Rose Schafroth Miller
and was born in Adams county, Iowa on November 19, 1904.
She
died on January 25, 1984 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning at the age of
seventy-nine years, two months and six days.
Dorothy
was united in marriage with Harry Higgins in Prescott, Iowa on November 23,
1927 The couple made their
home
in Mercer Township, Adams county.
Dorothy
joined the Methodist Church at an early age. She was active in the church and
also the United Methodist Women. She
and
her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in November of 1977.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mabel Miller; and her
husband, Harry Higgins.
Survivors
include her daughter, Marjorie Roberts and husband, Donald of Ankeny, Iowa and
her grandson, Jeffery
Roberts
of Ankeny.
Reverend
Les Hesseltine officiated at the final rites held
January 28 at the Lenox United Methodist, Church. Music was
by
Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck and Billie
Jean Barker, vocalists. Selections were "My God and I", "Each
Step

Take", and "How Great Thou Art". Flower bearers were Jenny
Brokaw and Elaine Murdock.

Jones, Arthur H -
Final
rites were conducted December 20 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox for
Arthur H. Jones, 71, of Lenox.
Jones
died at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska following a brief illness.
Jones
was the only son of Harry Reese and Annie Catherine O'Connell Jones. He was
born on the family farm
southwest
of Lenox on January 21, 1912. He died on December 17, 1983 at the age of 71
years, 10 months and 26 days.
Arthur
grew to manhood southwest of Lenox and attended rural schools. He graduated
from the Lenox High School
with
the class of 1938. He farmed all of his life on the family farm except for the
time in service to his country with the
U.S.
Army during World War II in Europe.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Frances Jones in January
of 1944.
Survivors
include two sisters, Margaret Jones, who made her home with him; and Mildred
Chadwick and husband, Clinton
of
Shenandoah, Iowa. Also surviving are a nephew, Francis Chadwick of Essex, Iowa;
other relatives and many friends.
Jones
was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox. His friends and
neighbors always knew they could depend
on
Arthur to willingly lend a helping hand.
Final
rites were conducted on December 20 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox
with Father Tim Fitzgerald officiating.
Lector
was George Sweeney, and music was by Jeri Hanzlik,
organist, and Florence Robinson, cantor.
Casket
bearers were Donald Beck, Carl Cordell, Howard Blake, Howard Rogers, Frank
Stanger, and Francis Wiand.
Interment
was in the Calvary Cemetery in Corning, Iowa.

Marcella
Cecilia Madden, the daughter of Dennis and Mary Mitchell Madden, was born on a
farm south of Lenox in Taylor
county,
Iowa on September 21, 1897. She died at the Lenox Care Center on December 7,
1983 at the age of 86 years, two
months
and 16 days.
Marcella
was raised on the farm and attended rural schools. She graduated from the Lenox
High School. After this time she
made
her home in Creston and was employed at the lowana Hotel there for many years until her retirement.
She
continued to make her home in Creston until she entered the Lenox Care Center
in October of 1978.
She
was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of the
Altar Society.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; a brother, Hugh; and two sisters, Nellie Smith
and Elizabeth Hill.
Survivors
include two sisters Alice Cunningham of Nortonville, Kansas and Delia Boltinghouse of Lenox; and several
nieces
and nephews.
Final
rites were held Saturday, December 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Lenox. Father Mike Sims
officiated.
Music was by Jeri Hanzlik, organist, and Florence
Robinson, cantor.

Manroe, Weldon (Jie) -
Weldon
"Jie" Manroc, the
son of Ray and Lulu Huddleston Manroe, was born
February 19, 1920 at Lenox, Iowa. He died at
his
home in Gravity, Iowa on Wednesday, February 8, 1984 at the age of sixty-three
years, eleven months and nineteen
days.
Weldon
grew to maturity in the Lenox community and was baptized into the Lenox First
Christian Church. He was
employed
by "Shorty" Rauch for several years at the Lenox Pool Hall.
On
October 23, 1942, he was united in marriage with Darlene Moffett of Clearfield.
The couple joined Hale's Show
working
with the group until he was inducted into the Army. Weldon served in the
European Theater with the first troops into
France
and Germany and was there until the surrender of Germany. Following his return
to Lenox, he again was employed by Hale's Shows and later by Western Telephone
as a lineman.
In
1952, they moved to Kansas City where "Jie"
was employed by the Missouri Gas Service Company for thirty years. He retired
in February of 1982. The Manroes purchased a home in
Gravity but were unable to move there until December 6, 1983.
"Jie" loved to fish and to work on his home. He also
collected clocks and repaired them.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and one sister.
Survivors
include his wife, Darlene of Gravity; two brothers, Bob Manroe of Lenox and Charley Manroe of Florida; one
sister,
Betty Webb of Creston, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Lola Knox of Lenox; a
sister-in-law, Delores Ambrose of Gravity;
two
brothers-in-law, Bill Moffett of Denver, Colorado and Earl Moffett of Midway,
California; nieces, nephews and friends.

were held on Saturday, February 11 at 2 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home

Perry Bruce Martin, 41, son of Roy and Reva
Martin

Perry
was born on December 20, 1942 in Wray, Colorado. He died at the University
Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa on January
23,
1984 at the age of forty-one years, one month and two days.
He
grew to manhood in the Lenox community and graduated from the Lenox Community
High School with the class of
1961.
Following
his high school graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving
his country for four years, including eleven months of service in Viet Nam.
After his discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, he resided in Creston, Iowa and
in
Bennington,
Nebraska for a number of years. He then moved to Colorado and most recently to
Newton, Iowa where
he
was employed by the Misner Electric Company.
Survivors
include his parents, Roy Hugh and Reva Ann Freshour Martin of Lenox; his daughter, Terri Rhedin and
husband,
Russell of Bennington, Nebraska; his son, Michael Martin of Bennington,
Nebraska; his brother, Dennis Martin
and
wife, Rhonda of Oskaloosa, Iowa and their son, Daniel; other relatives and many
friends.

Frank
D. Mathews, the son of Charles M and Verna Mathews, was born October 10, 1904
in Buffalo county, Nebraska.
He

month and three days.
Frank
was raised in Nebraska and was with the railroad for a short time. He was
united in marriage with Adeline D. Maler
on
April 17, 1937.
Mr.
Mathews was employed by Abel Construction Company for sixteen years and by
Peter Kewitt Construction for eleven
years.
Frank then moved to a farm near Clearfield, Iowa for thirty-four years, before
retiring at Port Isabel, Texas.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and three brothers, Bernard, Perry and Harvey.
Survivors
include his wife, Adeline of Port Isabel, Texas; Howard Mathews of Grand
Island, Nebraska, Delmar Mathews
of
Gibbon, Nebraska, and Alvah Mathews of Pocatella, Idaho; two sisters, Lotta Dutcher of Cambridge, Nebraska

Barbara Lee Walter Oliver, daughter
of Harry D. and Nell Griswold Walter, was born April 5, 1929 at Lenox, Iowa.

fifty-four years, six months and

days.
Barbara
spent her early years in Lenox, graduating from Knox High School with the Class
of 1946. She earned a
B.S.
Degree in Music from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and her M.S. Degree in
Family Counseling from Drake
University
in Des Moines.
Barbara
was currently employed in the office of Dr. Valin.
She found purpose in her life by helping others.
Preceding
her in death was her father.
Survivors
include her sons, David Oliver of Des Moines and Richard Oliver of Dallas.
Texas; two grandchildren, Amy and
Andy
Oliver; her mother, Nell Walter of Lenox: a brother, Jake Walter of Southboro, Massachusetts; a sister. Patricia

were held Wednesday November 16 at the Larkin-Bendcr Funeral Home in Lenox at 11 a.m. Reverend
Lester Hesseltinc, pastor of the Lenox United Methodist

Harvey Edwin -
Harvey
Edwin Alley, the oldest son of Martin J. and Alice (Casey) Riley was born on
the family farm at Mercer Center on
November
6, 1885. He died at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning on December 27, 1983
at the age of 98 after
residing
there for a little over a year.
He
was educated in the rural schools and the Academy in Corning.
On
February 12, 1912, he was united in marriage with Zepha A. Preston in the home of Reverend Kirkendall in
Ames, Iowa.
They
started housekeeping by renting two rooms in the Grandma Casey home for the
first year. Then he lived the rest of
his
life on the farm he owned nearby.
He
joined the Mercer Center Methodist Church as a young man and was a faithful
member as long as his health permitted.
He
served in many positions of the church board, serving as a trustee and
treasurer for many years.
Serving
as director on the board of the REC and Farm Service of Corning were only part
of his service to the community.
He
farmed all his life and took great pride in his crops and feeding his cattle.
He was a man young for his years,
helping
with farm work and driving his car until just about two years ago.
He
was preceded in death by an infant son; his wife, Zepha,
on August 25, 1973; his parents; a brother, Carl; and a sister,
Mae Bennison.
He
is survived by a sister, Ethel Bovaird of rural
Prescott; a brother, Harold Riley, who lives on the family farm near
Mercer
Center; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Harvey
enjoyed children and was happiest when he could present one with a treat or a
coin.
Funeral
services were held Friday, December 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Gauthier Funeral
Home. Reverend Lester Hesseltine
officiated.
Music
was by Kathy Schafer, vocalist and organist.
Casket

was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

E. Turner, age 55, of Creston died Saturday, December 31 at Iowa Methodist
Hospital in Des Moines following

six-month illness. He was the son of Herschel and Gladys (Draper) Turner.

Funeral
services for Iver Claire Wackernagle,
60, of Bedford were held November 26 at the First Christian Church in
Clearfield.
Reverend Roger Graf and Reverend Carl Cummings officiated.
Wackernagle died November 23, 1983. He had been in failing health the past year and had
been a patient at various times
in
the hospital and Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr.
Interment
was in the Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa.
The
only child of Guss and Beatrice Wackernagle, Iver was born October 12, 1923 at the home place
south of Clearfield.
He
was married to Arloa Wyman on February 15. 1944. Iver's entire life was spent around and in the Clearfield
community.
He
attended country schools south of Clearfield and resided with his aunt, Rose Wackernagle, part of the time while attending
high
school in Clearfield. He was graduated with the class of 1942.
He
enjoyed taking care of the livestock and farming with his son, Jack, helping.
He loved all kinds of sports, card playing,
bowling
and traveling. He was never too busy to stop his work and visit with his
neighbors and many friends. He especially
loved
having his grandchildren visit.
He
was an electrician for many years, a member of the Lions Club in Clearfield, a
member of the Pork Producers
Association,
and the Cattlemens Association.
He
was preceded in death by his father, Guss, on January
9, 1975 his aunt, Rose Wackernagle on October 4,
1970, his
aunt,
Stella Taylor on January 4, 1978, and his father-in-law, Carl Wyman on August
26, 1973.
Survivors
include his wife, Arloa; two children: S.C. Wackernagle and Vicki O'Connor; daughter-in-law, Debbie;
son-in-law,
Tom; three grandchildren, Gary Wackernagle, John
O'Connor and Melissa O'Connor; cousin, Edna Carr of
Springfield,
Nebraska: second cousins, Howard Carr and Shirley Schoettger;
other relatives and host of friends.
