services for William Chauncey Barrens, 63, of Lenox were held Thursday, May 4,
at the United Methodist
Church
in Lenox with Rev. Robert Shreve officiating.
Music
was provided by Kathryn Wilson, Billie Jean Barker and Debbie Sweeney. Casket
bearers were nephews
Tony
Hughes, David Hughes, Jerry Baker, Doug Leonard, Kenny Nelson, Mike Thomas and
Darrell Hein.
Military
rites were provided by Parkinson Post 250 American Legion. Interment was at
West Fairview Cemetery
in
Lenox.
Bill
was born Nov. 13, 1931, to George and Edra Litteer Barrens, he attended Lenox Public School,
graduating in
1949.
Following graduation, he became involved with his father in the family business.
From
1952 to 1954, he served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Lenox to resume his
involvement with the family
operation,
and this became his life's work until selling the business in February of 1994.
Bill
was united in marriage to Marian Thomas of rural Corning at the Oak Hill
Christian Church near Bushville on
Feb.
16, 1958. To this union were born three children: Mark, Chris and Linda.
Bill
was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church. He enjoyed his involvement in
community activities, especially
the Light
& Water Board and the Stock & Saddle Club.
Survivors
include his wife, Marian Barrens, children Mark (wife Becky) Barrens of Lenox;
Chris (wife Jean) Barrens of
Lenox;
and Linda (husband Chris) Christensen of Lenox; grandchildren Reagan, Alex and
Jamie Barrens, Nicole and
Jeremy
Barrens, Maggie and Austin Christensen, all of Lenox; sister Wilma (husband
Glen) Hughes of Bedford;
nieces,
nephews and a host of friends and acquaintances.
Bill's
children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. His daily association with
close friends and customers
meant
so much to him. His love for the land was very much a part of his life.

Lucille
Grace Brokaw, daughter of Edward Franklin and Mabel Luella (Chappell) Kempton was
born January 5, 1905 in Taylor County, Iowa and entered into rest June 8, 1995
at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa at the age of 90 years 5 months and
3 days.
She
started her schooling at Jasper No. 6 and then attended school in Corning. Iowa
graduating from the Corning High School in
1924.
On
August 16, 1925, Lucille was united in marriage with Leland Stanford Brokaw.
Three children were born to this union. On August 16,1975, they were privileged
to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary; and on August 16, 1991, just prior
to Leland's
death
in 1992, they celebrated their 66th anniversary. They farmed their entire
married life in the same area and were
very
much a part of the Mercer Center Community.
They
began farming in Mercer Township, eventually purchasing 320 acres of land. In
1949 they built their new house to replace the original 13-room home. In 1975,
a tornado destroyed the large barn. A new barn was erected at that time.
Lucille
has spent her lifetime raising her family, making a home and helping Leland
with the farming. She has always been an active
member
of the Mercer Center Church and the U.M.W Women's Society. She was a member of
the Neighborhood "W.L." Card Club. She greatly enjoyed handwork and
ceramics. The afghans, quilts and crocheted items she made are a great joy to
her children and grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son-in-law, Dale Hurd, two sisters and one brother.
Lucille
is survived by her children; Rowena Marie Hurd of
Daytona Beach, Florida, Donald D. (Joanna) Brokaw and
Stanley
L. (Phyllis)Brokaw, all of Corning, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren; a half-sister,
Evelyn
(Ernie) Lowe of Chariton, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and
many friends.

Raymond
was born August 28, 1909, in Grant Township, to Charles J. and Ida (Morley)
Francis.
On
August 10, 1934, he was married to Irene Bullock.
Raymond
was a lifetime resident of Union County. He was a member of the Platte Center
Presbyterian Church,
where
he served as an elder and trustee.
Survivors
include his wife Irene, of Kent; sons David (wife Fern) of Dallas, Texas,
Dennis (wife Glocile) of West
Des
Moines, Jere (wife Candis)
of Columbia, Mo., and Ted (wife Ruth) of Burlington, Iowa; brothers Paul

was preceded in death by his parents, three

Mae lived in the Clarinda area, attending country schools south of Clarinda and
walking or riding horseback to

lessons during her youth. She also attended Rose Hill Church near Clarinda.
On
March 3, 1953 she was united in marriage to Paul Gray at Villisca, Iowa. They
spent their married life near
Blockton,
Iowa, occupied in farming.
To
this union three children were born; Carolyn Kay, Barbara Jean, and Debra Mae.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents; Walter and Zoa and three brothers, Harold, Richard, and Ernest.

Alice
was born Nov. 21, 1898, in Lenox, the daughter of George John and Maria Barbara
Beck. She passed away
May
27 at the Lenox Care Center.
She
attended Lenox grade and high school, graduating in 1917. After a few years of
teaching in rural schools, she
attended
Iowa State Teachers College and graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics
and Chemistry. She
continued
her education at the University of Chicago.
In
1928 she entered the Indian School Service, where she worked at Chemawa, Roe, Carson City, Nev., Cheyenne
River,
S.D., Ft. Totten and Wahpeton, N.D.
In
1946, she went to Hawaii where she became a member of the University of Hawaii
staff. After nine years
there
she transferred to Montana State College as assistant professor in Home
Economics. For 30 years she
served
the people in helping and teaching others how to improve their methods and
trends of living.
In
1959 she returned to Lenox where she made her new home, making many friends and
new acquaintances.
Alice
is survived by her son John of Phoenix, Ariz.; three nieces, Martha and Hermina Brandt of Chicago,
Ill.,
and Helen Brandt of Milwaukee, Wis.; and many friends.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence, daughter-in-law Ena and three sisters.

Susie
May Fearnot was born January 7, 1902 in Marco,
Indiana and passed away on May 22, 1995 at the Murdock
Manor
in Lafayette, Indiana at the age of 93 years 4 months and 15 days. She lived
her childhood in Greene County,
Indiana
and moved to Lenox, Iowa, in 1924. She returned to Indiana in May 1990.
She
was united in marriage to Earl M. Henderson on January 26, 1928. Born to this
union was one daughter,
Veryla Lou and one son, Melvin Earl Henderson.
She
was a member of the Marco United Methodist Church, the American Legion
Auxiliary of Lenox, Ia. where
she
served as President in the 1940s and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in
Creston, Iowa. She was also an
avid
quilter.
She
is survived by a granddaughter, Susie Geneva and a grandson, David Earl Crouch,
both in Indiana, a
great
grandson, a sister, Pansy Smith of Lafayette, Indiana, a brother Charles "Doney" Fearnot of Erie,
Pennsylvania
and
several nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, in 1966, a daughter Veryla Lou, a son Melvin Earl, two sisters
and
five brothers.
Funeral
services were held May 27, 1995 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield,
Indiana, with the Reverend
Paul
Wiggins officiating. Music was by organist Helen Hunter and singer Bob Martin.
Pallbearers
were Ted Meadows, Charles Martindale, Glen Crowe, Richard Freeman, David Cross,
and Ronald
Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers were James Smith and Wilbur Smith. Interment was in the
Walnut Grove Cemetery.

was born July 16, 1953, to Doyle and Phyllis Thompson Henry in Clarinda, Iowa.

Kenneth
graduated from Bedford High School in 1972 and was a graduate of the Technical
School at
Southwestern
Community College in Creston. He worked for several years in South Dakota in a
saw mill and in
Arkansas
on a ranch before returning home to assist in caring for his elderly parents.
Kenneth
is survived by his parents, Doyle and Phyllis Henry, two brothers, David (wife

Sturgis,
S.D., and Clifford (wife Jackie) Henry of St. Louis; two sisters, Julia

Lavaughn was born in Lenox on March 29, 1926, and attended Lenox schools. He served in
the U.S. Navy during

War II and continued service in the reserves.
He
married Loretta Turner on Jan. 1, 1948.
Lavaughn was employed by Barker Implement for nine years, then began his own auto repair
shop in 1963. He retired
in
1986.
During
his retirement, Lavaughn continued to work on wood
projects and crafts with his wife Loretta. They
opened
their own craft store on Main Street in Lenox in 1994.
He
was an active member of the American Legion Parkinson Post 250 since 1946 and
was also a member of
VFW
for several years.
He
is survived by his wife, Loretta; son, Timothy Howard (wife Emilie); daughter
Sheila Woosley Howard; grandchildren
Tanya,
Deana, Jesse and Travis Howard and Jennifer Woosley;
brother Mel and sister-in-law Carol Howard; sister Norma
Warwick;
and sister-in-law Florence Howard.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrell.

Wilson
Henry Longfellow, son of Henry Longfellow and Alta Nash Longfellow was born in
Taylor County on July 7,
1916
and departed this life April 7, 1995 in Creston, Iowa at the age of 78 years.
He
lived in Creston Iowa and grew to maturity in Bedford, Iowa where he attended
the public school and
the
Christian Church.
On
May 5, 1938 he was united in marriage to Delores Burns at Maryville, Missouri
and they lived in Bedford,
Lenox,
and Creston, Iowa. To this union four children were born; Sharon Kay Howes, Kenneth Larry
Longfellow,
Jack Irwin Longfellow and Mary Joe Simms.
He
worked for the railroad, drilled wells, tiled and farmed.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, son Kenneth and brother Carl.
Left
to cherish his memory are; wife Delores; daughters, Sharon and Mary Joe; son,
Jack; thirteen
grandchildren;
3 great grandchildren; brother Ivan and sister Mary.
He
was a kind and considerate man, whose greatest joy was to be with his children
and grandchildren and

will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ivan
died June 7 in Creston, after battling an illness.
He
was born Nov. 30, 1919, near Bedford, Iowa, to Joseph LeRoy Lucas and Lena Pearl Statesman Lucas. He was
one
of eight children.
Ivan
grew up in the country, helping his family with farming operations. He
graduated from Bedford High School.
He
was married to Selma Lorraine Huntington on June 14, 1941. They celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary in
1991.
They are the parents of five children: Dena Lucas of Houston, Texas; Dr. Tim
(wife Joan) Lucas of Pella; Vicki
(husband
Phil) Maltzahn of Grand Island, Neb.; Mitzi (husband
Mike) Magnuson of Lincoln, Neb.; and Ada (husband
Craig) Calendine of Omaha, Neb.
Ivan
served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He spent most of his life farming
and selling feed for livestock. In
1965,
he retired from farming and moved into Lenox, opening Ivan's car Wash which he
owned and operated until 1994.
He
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox and served as an Elder
and Trustee. He was also a
member
of the Lenox Rotary Club, Lenox Golf Club, and served on the Lenox City Council
for four years.
He
is survived by his wife and children; nine grandchildren; sisters Marie
(husband Estel) Larison,
Doris 0'Dell and
Vadonna Price, all of Bedford; and brothers Vane and Ronald, both of Bedford.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Max.

Clark
Edwin Moore Sr. passed away April 5, 1995, at the Lenox Care Center, at the age
of 93 years, 6 months and 10 days.
He
was born September 26, 1901, at the home of his parents, Bud and Carrie Moore,
southwest of Lenox.
On
Dec. 25, 1919, he was united in marriage to Ruth Toland,
and to this union four children were born: Vivian, Delores, Clark Jr. and
Betty. He had eight grandchildren: Steven Straight, Bill Carter Jr., Sheryl
(Moore) Norlin, Michael and Kelly Moore, Randy and
Jeff Samo, and Sandy (Samo)
Floyd. There are 15 greatgrandchildren.
His
affiliations were with the Masons, for which he was a secretary for many years;
Shrine, Eastern Star No. 268, York and Scottish rite, Kiwanis Club of Creston.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox.
He
was a policeman in Lenox from 1969 to 1975.
His
primary hobby was taking pictures of family and things of interest in and
around Lenox. He enjoyed family reunions and family
birthday
celebrations.
Survivors
include his four children: Vivian Strait (husband Melvin) of Lenox; Delores
Carter (husband Bill Sr.) of Wollfe City, Texas;
Clark
Jr. (wife Helen) of Des Moines; Betty Samo (husband
Charles) of Villisca; eight grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren;
sister
Freda Pierce of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, Jack of Northridge, Calif., and
Raymond of Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Joyann Moore and Gertrude (Toland) Beatty; and a number of
nephews and nieces.
Preceding
him in death were his parents; his wife, Ruth, on Nov. 6, 1991; a brother, a
sister and two grandchildren.

services were held Saturday, April 8, at Lenox United Methodist Church with
Rev. Robert Shreve officiating.

Charlie
Jennings Smith was born July 29, 1905, at Van Meter to Howard T. and Ellen E.
(Jennings) Smith. Charlie
was
baptized in the Van Meter Methodist Church.
He
graduated from Van Meter High School in 1923. Charlie farmed near Van Meter
before he married Ila May
Knott,
June 20, 1939, at Warsaw, Mo. They moved to the Sharpsburg area and farmed the
Knott Family Farm.
Two children
were brought into the family by adoption, in 1941, a son, Jay Charles, and in
1943, a daughter, Patricia
Ellen.
While
farming Charlie was an active member of the Sharpsburg Methodist Church.
Charlie purchased the farm in
1946
and continued his love of farming and working with the livestock. He farmed 49
years before retiring. In 1977 Charlie
and Ila sold the farm and moved to Clearfield. There Charlie
took great pride in raising ponies on the small acreage. Charlie
and Ila spent a number of winters in Yuma, Arizona.
Charlie
was a member of the Masonic Noble Lodge no. 458 AF and AM in Clearfield, the
Clearfield Lions Club, and
the
Clearfield United Methodist Church.
Charlie
is survived by his wife, Ila; a son Jay (wife
Shirley) Ferrel of Davenport; a daughter, Patricia
(husband
Manual)
Fuentes of Clarinda; six grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren;
a brother, Hugh Smith of Dallas Center; a
sister, Marybelle Hazen of Dumas, Texas and one nephew Graham

Wininger, John Tyler -
John
Tyler Wininger, known to everybody as Tyler, was born
April 21, 1991, in North Kansas City to Sherry
and
John Wininger. Tyler's life began to touch many
others as the need for a liver transplant became known.
Tyler's
mother Sherry gave a part of her liver and Tyler received the transplant in
September of 1992.
Sherry Wininger is the former Sherry Stephens, a 1982
graduate of Lenox High School. She is the daughter of Ivan
and
Shirley Stephens of Clearfield.
Tyler
was an active happy, child. He enjoyed his short life and the usual things of
being a little boy. Special times were
aerobics
with his mom, swimming in the pool with his dad, riding his big dog Beau, time
on the swing set, and hamming
it
up before the camera.
Tyler
left this life Monday April 3 at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. His
death came as a surprise and
shock
to many as he had been doing quite well. He died of a massive infection.
Left
to cherish his memory are his parents Sherry and John; paternal grandparents
John and Lois Wininger of Des Moines;
maternal
grandparents Ivan and Shirley Stephens of Clearfield; a number of aunts,
uncles, cousins, and many friends of all ages.

Wininger,
John Tyler -
John
Tyler Wininger, son of John Lewis and Sherry Lynn
Stephens Wininger, was born on April 21, 1991, and
died
suddenly on Monday, April 3, 1995 at the age of 3 years, 11 months and 13 days.
He
passed away at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City after suffering an
overwhelming infection.
Tyler
was born in North Kansas City, Mo. He received much attention from the media in
September of 1992, when he
was
a liver transplant patient, receiving a portion of his mother's liver to
sustain his life.
The
transplant surgery was done at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. They participated
in the living
related
transplant procedure which was relatively new. They were the fifth ones to
receive this type of surgery,
which
was a success.
Tyler
was a very special happy little boy. He touched the lives of many people
through the television networks
and
newspapers. He always had a smile and hug for everyone and became a special
friend to all his doctors and
nurses.
Tyler
enjoyed going to preschool at the Early Childhood learning Center in Liberty,
Mo. He loved being with other
children.
His best friends were Beau and Buddy, the family dogs.
Funeral
services were held on Thursday, April 6, 1995, at 1 p.m. at the D.W. Newcomer's
Sons White Chapel Funeral
Home.
Burial was in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in "Garden of Little
Angels" area.
Rev.
Al Rusk of the Clearfield United Methodist Church officiated at the services.

Funeral
services for Dorothy Kathryn Wurster, who died June
17, 1995, were held Wednesday, June 21, at
Wilson-Watson
Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Officiating was Rev.
Michael Druhl.
Dorothy
died after a long illness at the age of 76 years, 10 months.
Music
was provided by Nancy Sackett, Carol McCreary and
Barbie McCreary. Casket bearers were Jeff Lutrick,
Steve
Newton, Max McGehee, Jeremy Larsen, Kim Greenland,
and Todd Glendenning.
Interment
was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
Dorothy
was born August 11, 1918, in Taylor County to Ed and Mary Hargin Cooper. She graduated from Lenox
High
School and taught in rural Taylor County Schools.
On
Nov. 28, 1942, she was united in marriage to Melvin Wurster.
The major portion of their married life was spent in
Mt. Ayr, where they owned and operated hardware stores She was
a member of the United Methodist Church of
Mt. Ayr and of the Rebecca Lodge.
Dorothy
was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin; daughter Sharon; and
brother Donald.
She is
survived by a son, Brent, and his fiancee Jodie
Bradley; brothers Dale of Conway and his family and
Daryl
of Council Bluffs and his family; a sister-in-law, Dorothy of Osseo, Minn., and
her family.
