Barker, Luell James -

Funeral services for Luell James Barker were held Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1989 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Luell was born April 19, 1916, at Keokuk, Iowa, the fifth child born to James and Sarah Jane Hocker Barker. He had one sister Ethel and three brothers: Ellis, Jesse and Elmer.

Luell never married. He spent most of his life around Lenox and Sharpsburg, the past 45 years on the farm where he died.

His mother died when he was five months old and his Uncle Frank and Aunt May took him to raise.

Luell was preceded in death by his beloved Uncle Frank and Uncle May, his parents and brother Elmer.

He is survived by his sister Ethel and husband Carl Spring of the Lenox Care Center; two brothers: Ellis and wife Lula of Elk Grove, Ca.; Jesse and wife Erla of Lenox; a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and cousins.

He believed to have a good neighbor, you had to be one, as proved by the third generation of Winslows as neighbors during his 72 years of life.

His uncle Harold Goecker was a special friend of his and spent much time with him. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Chandler, Thelma E Leach -

Thelma E. Leach Chandler was born June 25, 1909, in Adams County, Iowa, to Wesley Hamblin and Nellie Fitzgerald Leach. She passed away at the home of her daughter Donella Hoselton at Hedrick, Iowa, on March 1, 1989, at the age of 79 years, eight months and four

days.

With the exception of two years in Minnesota, Thelma and her family lived in Adams County, Iowa. After returning to Iowa, Thelma attended a rural elementary school and graduated from Lenox High School in 1927.

On August 30,1930, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Franklin Chandler at Clarinda, Iowa. They made their home in Colorado for four years and returned to Iowa where they farmed in Adams and Taylor Counties. They purchased a farm north of Sharpsburg where

they lived until moving into Lenox in 1971. To this union three children were born: Paul Robert Chandler of Bedford; Donella Grace (Mrs. Stanley) Hoselton of Hedrick; and Carol Lucille (Mrs. Ronald) Bolton of Overland Park, Ks.

Thelma is survived by her three children; 11 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother: Alvin Leach of Lamoni; a sister: Ruby (Mrs. Bert) Shawler of Lenox.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Earl, Glenn and Harold Leach, her parents, and her loving husband Lloyd. 

Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Pearl Chandler of Stevensville, Mt. and Sylvia Brown of Lenox; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Thelma accepted Christ as her Saviour and became a member of the First Christian Church in Lenox at the age of 13.

She was in relatively good health until the last year and died of complications of cancer.

Thelma was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had many friends and was loved by all for her kindness and loving ways. She had cared for Lloyd for nearly 19 years following his injuries in 1968. She enjoyed gardening, genealogical research, music,

attending church and school events, as well as the VIC Club.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, 1989 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating.

Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

Henderson, Hester Tuggle Wilson -

Funeral services for Hester T. Henderson were held Tuesday, March 21, 1989 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Shirley Lockard and Rev. Naizghi Zekarias officiating.  Burial was at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Hester Tuggle Henderson, daughter of George B. and Ida Marsh Tuggle, was born October 23, 1889, at Lawson, Mo. She died

March 19, 1989 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 99 years, four months, and 27 days.

When Hester was young, the family moved to Parkville, Mo. where she graduated from Park Academy and then was graduated from Warrensburg State Teacher's College, Warrensburg, Mo. She taught school in the Parkville and Liberty areas.

She was married to S.T. Wilson, June 18, 1919 and moved to Lenox. Mr. Wilson died in 1937 and she returned to the teaching profession until she married W.T. Henderson in 1940. Mr. Henderson died in 1950.

Mrs. Henderson has lived in Lenox and has been an active member of the United Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, LFC, MFO, and Country Clubs.

Survivors include her sisters: Dorothy T. Morton, Platte City, Mo.; and Georgia T. Halsey of Grassy Creek, N.C.; two sisters, Francis T. Parker and Roxie T. Clement; and two brothers, Jesse B. Tuggle and Herbert M. Tuggle have preceded her in death. She is also survived by two stepsons, Guy and Mary Henderson of Lenox; Milton and Frances Henderson of Davis, Ca.; six step grandchildren; 10

great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Larson, Chad John -

Funeral services for Chad Larson were held Tuesday, March 14, 1989 at the First Christian Church in Clearfield with Rev. Shirley Lockard and Fr. John Zeitler officiating. Interment was at Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa.

Chad John Larson was born October 2, 1972 at Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, the eldest son of Gregory John and Jeanie Darlene Nelson Larson. He passed away at his home seven miles southwest of Clearfield, Iowa on March 11, 1989 at the age of 16 years, five months and nine days.

Chad was a sophomore, Clearfield student attending the Lenox Community High School at Lenox, Ia. He was a member of the Clearfield Christian Church and the Farrell's Tae-Kwon-Do Club of Creston. Chad was a great outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, raising livestock, taxidermy, bowling, football, baseball, and rock music!

Chad is survived by his father Greg, his mother Jeanie, his sister Angie, and his brother Brandon, also grandparents Phil and Alberta Larson, Paul and JoAnn Nelson, all of Clearfield, and Hank and Caroline Garner of Bedford; great grandparents James P. and Jackie Larson of Clearfield.

Also left to mourn his passing are uncles, aunts and cousins Lewis, Martha, Will, Robby, and Shaun Larson of Clearfield; Janice, Glee, Wyatt, Elaine, Melanie Mobley of Benton; Judy, Steve, Scott, Shannon, Ryan, Shawn Sandahl of West Des Moines; Jim, Carolyn,

Dana, Danny Nelson; and Ken, Kathy, Jennifer, LaDanya and Ashley Nelson, all of Clearfield; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Chad was a very loving and caring person. He always had a smile for everyone and showed concern for his friends and family. There will always be a special place for Chad in all our hearts.

Maharry, Bertha Mary Wilson -

Funeral services for Bertha M. Maharry were held Saturday, April 1, 1989 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Shirley Lockard officiating. Interment was at East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

Bertha Mary Wilson Maharry was born near Greenfield, Iowa on October 6, 1891 and died March 29, 1989 at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox, Iowa. She was 97. Her parents were Frank and Bessie Miles Wilson. All of her six brothers and sisters, as well as her parents, preceded her in death. Her brothers were Bert, Fred, Dick and Gerald Wilson; Mabel Rupe and Nelle Butler were her sisters.

After early childhood in Greenfield, she moved with her family to a farm near Nevada, Mo., and after three years moved to Farragut, Iowa. She completed eighth grade there and for one year attended Western Norma School in Shenandoah, Iowa. After her family

moved to a farm east of Lenox, she resided in Taylor County for the rest of her life.

She was married March 12, 1912 to Frank I. Maharry and they started farming near Clearfield, later moving to Lenox. Frank preceded her in death on July 22 1965. They had two daughters, Genevieve Hughes who died March 16, 1967 and Kathleen Harover of Texas City,

Tx. who survives.

Bertha was a longtime faithful member of the Lenox Presbyterian Church, a member of the Presbyterian Women and sang in the church choir for many years. She was a member of PEO and a 50-year member of Eastern Star, a charter member of GVC, the Lenox Country Club, and an avid supporter of the Republican Women's group. She was active, energetic, optimistic, generous and had a great sense of humor.

She was on a bowling team until she was 80, drove her own car until 90 and still sang with good voice until a month before her death. She was a good friend and a loving grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jeanne Hughes Bush, whose children Mike, Steve and Linda live in California She is also survived by seven granddaughters and their families: Mary and Garland Walter and their children, Debbie and Carrie of Lenox, and Suzi and Chad Bonnett and Joni Walter of Ames; Kathy and Mike Azinger, Chris and Josh of Fort Madison; Peggy and David Tripp, Mandy, Sarah, Jake and Charlie of Kent; Cindy Tyler and Laura of Orlando, Fla.; Anne Yell and Travis of Texas City, Tx.; Susan and Mike Greene, Heather and Stephanie of Mt. Ayr; and Julie and Bruce Ballard of Boca Raton, Fla.

Also surviving are her sons-in-law James Hughes of Lenox, and Bill Harover of Texas City, Tx., and her dear brother-in-law Cecil Maharry of Lenox; also nieces, nephews and many friends will mourn her passing.

Miller, Opal Una Reed -

Opal U. (Reed) Miller, 77, of Lenox, died Wednesday, February 22, 1989 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Services were held Saturday, February 25, 1989 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born July 4, 1911 in Grant Township, Adams County to George LeRoy and Faith Jane (Allbaugh) Reed. She grew to adulthood on the farm and moved to Lenox with her mother and sister, Gladys.

On September 27, 1933 she married Clyde F. Miller and in March 1934 they moved to the farm just 1/4 mile from where she was born. They farmed until Clyde's death in 1987. She continued to live on the farm until October, 1988 when she moved to Lenox, Iowa.

She belonged to two neighborhood clubs, which she attended until her health failed. She belonged to the Prairie Star Church until it was closed and then the family moved their membership to the Lenox Methodist Church where she continued her membership until

her death.

Survivors include her son Roland (Butch) Miller and wife Jane of Kent; daughter, Marilyn (Mrs. Keith) James of Lenox; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and her husband.

Morris, Vivian Boyce -

Vivian B. Morris, 77, of Lenox, died Monday evening, March 27, 1989 of cancer at the Clearview Care Center in Clearfield.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 30 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Interment was at Stringtown Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her name.

Mrs. Morris was born December 17, 1911, in Osceola to Jim and Jennie (McCann) Boyce. She married Howard Morris Nov. 22, 1950, in Nashua. She lived in Lenox since her marriage and owned and operated the Smart Shop for 35 years. She was a member of the

United Methodist Church, Legion Auxiliary, Vic Club and Lenox Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include her husband Howard of Lenox and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by a twin sister.

Razey, Evelyn Culver Krueger -

Evelyn Culver (Krueger) Razey, 81, of Ellensburg died Saturday at Royal Vista Care Center in Ellensburg, Wash. She was born in Creston, Iowa on May 4, 1907, a daughter of Charles and Anna (Griffith) Culver. She attended school in Creston and Des Moines graduating from high school in 1926.

She and John S. (Jack) Krueger were married on April 23, 1930; they had one son Donald. The family lived in Lenox, Iowa where they farmed until 1963. They moved to the Kittitas Valley in 1979.

Mr. Krueger died in Ellesburg on September 18, 1974.

Mrs. Razey was a member of the United Methodist Church, a member and past president of the United Methodist Woman, a member of the 3-M Club and Silver Circle.

She and Raymond Razey  were married on February 16, 1978.

Survivors in addition to her husband Raymond, include her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Marilyn Krueger, and two grandchildren Stacey and Scott, all of Ellensburg and one sister, Opal Peck of Creston.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 29 at the First Methodist Church, Ellensburg. The Rev. Miles Jackson officiated and burial was at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church.

Reed, Jean Agnes -

Jean Agnes Reed, 94, died Friday in Salem. She was born in Lenox, Iowa, and she moved to the Monmouth area in 1937 and to

the Salem area in 1947. She married Ernest J. Reed Dec. 31, 1912 in Lenox. He died in 1967. She was a homemaker, and she

loved crocheting and reading.

Survivors include her sons, Clifford of Keizer and George of Portland; daughter, Pearl Hall of Keizer; and sister, Ruth Tuttle

of Des Moines, Iowa.

Graveside services were held Wed., Feb. 15 in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Salem.

Richey, Thelma Bell Cunning -

Funeral services for Thelma Bell Richey were held Thursday, March 16, 1989 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with

Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Thelma Bell Richey, oldest daughter of William E. and Mamie Nichole Cunning was born on a farm north of Bedford, Iowa November 8, 1906. Thelma departed this life on March 13 1989 at the age of 82 years, seven months and five days.

Thelma grew up on a farm south of Clearfield, Iowa. She joined the Christian Church at an early age. On September 21, 1925 Thelma was united in marriage to Edwin L. Richey.

In 1946 Ed and Thelma bought the drug store in Clearfield, where they worked side by side until they sold it in 1962 and bought a variety store in Stanton, Iowa. They continued working together until 1968 when Thelma bought Porter's Dry Goods Store in Lenox, Iowa.

Thelma enjoyed serving and meeting the public. After running the store for a number of years, Thelma joined Ed in retirement.

Thelma enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was a member of the GVC Birthday Club and the Lenox Country Club. Thelma was a faithful member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and she attended UMW regularly attended UMW regularly.

In June of 1988 when her health started failing, Thelma made her home at the Lenox Care Center where she lived until her death.

Survivors include her daughter Barbara Larson and husband Jake of Lenox; son Bill and wife Ellen of Hudson, Fla.; daughter Donna Norton and husband Glenn of Lenox; nine grandchildren: Connie Larson Hart, Jane Larson Hegwood, Jim Larson, Doug Larson, Mike

Richey, Craig Richey, Glenna Norton Cox, Jay Norton and Jan Norton Dorr; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorthea Grossman and Cecile Barron; and two brothers, Duane Cunning and Dwight Cunning.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Ed, a brother Burl Cunning and her parents.

Thelma will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, a host of friends and her family. Thelma's witty sense of humor will be especially missed.

Roberts, Catherine May Richardson -

Funeral services for Catherine May Roberts were held Saturday, March 18, 1989 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was in Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Catherine May Roberts, daughter of Susan Emily and Winfield Riley Richardson was born at Gravity, Iowa on May 13, 1896 and departed this life March 16, 1989 at the Lenox Care Center, Lenox, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 10 months and three days.

She lived north of Gravity and grew to maturity in Taylor County where she attended the public school and the Gravity Christian Church.

On April 15, 1914 she was united in marriage to Charles Thomas Roberts and they lived in Taylor County. To this union two children

were born: Emily Nan Agnew and C.T. "Jerry" Roberts. She worked in the home caring for her family and house.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a half-sister and a brother.

Left to cherish her memory are Emily and John Agnew, C.T. "Jerry" and Jean Roberts; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and one sister Elnora Hunt.

She was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church. She was a kind and considerate wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by

all who knew and loved her.

Sander, Janice Marie Olsen -

Janice Marie Sander, the daughter of Ray and Edna (Andersen) Olsen, was born at Atlantic, Iowa on April 26, 1939. She was baptized and confirmed at Elk horn Lutheran Church, and attended Elk Horn School, graduating in the class of 1957. After school, she was

employed as a teller for the Elk Horn Branch of Shelby County State Bank.

On May 9, 1959, Janice was united in marriage to Jim Sander in Elk Horn. Three children were born to this union. After her marriage, Janice continued to work for a time at the bank in Elk Horn. In 1974, Jim and Janice moved to Harlan where she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She died at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs on March 20, 1989, having attained the age of 49 years, 10 months, and 22 days.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mark, and an infant daughter.

In addition to her husband, Jim of Harlan, she is survived by two daughters, Karla (Mrs. Steve) Mikkelsen of Harlan, and Lori Sander of Harlan; her parents, Ray and Edna Olsen of Elk Horn; one brother, Dick Olsen of Lenox; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 23, 1989 at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with Pastor Otto Zwainziger officiating.

Interment was in Elk Horn Cemetery with Wayne Fink, Ron Ellsworth, Terry Hulsebus, Glen Cunningham, and Casey Christensen

serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as active casket bearers were Jim Hansen, Daniel Bieker, Rodney Rihner, Larry Gustason, Peter M. Goeser, and Chris P. Sorensen.

Pauley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Schumacher, Candace Darlene -

Candace Darlene Schumacher, two day old daughter of Dwight and Mary Tripp Schumacher of Ridgeway, Mo. entered Heavens gates on April 2, 1989 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., also where she was born on March 31, 1989.

Leaving to mourn her are her parents, brothers and sisters, Scotty Ray Tripp of the home, Moses Allen Schumacher of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Wendy Marie Tripp of the home, Debra Dawn Schumacher of New Hampton, Mo.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Donald Groves Sr. of Lenox, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Watts of Ridgeway, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schumacher of Harvey, Iowa; great grandparent, Mrs. Lillian Schumacher of Hiawatha, Ks.; also a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Preceding her in death were Timothy Groves, Ivan D. Tull, Jennifer Groves and Walter Dale Groves, Jr.

Graveside services were held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mt. Ayr, Iowa Thursday, April 6, 1989, Rev Ronald Christlie officiating.

Seals, Raymond -

Raymond Seals of Gravity died early Friday morning when a home he lived in burned. Seals, 79, had recently moved into the home to live

with his daughter, Debbie Waggoner, her husband William and their three children. The Waggoners were also at home when the fire broke out, but the family escaped serious injuries.

The fire started about midnight, and an electrical short was blamed for the blaze. Although the Waggoners escaped from the house, the fire was too intense for them to re-enter the home and rescue Raymond, who was still suffering from the effects of a stroke.

The Gravity Fire Department responded to the fire and later had assistance from New Market, Bedford and Sharpsburg departments. Volunteer firemen fought the fire until about 5:30 a.m. Friday.

The Waggoner family is taking clothes donations at Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda and the Legion Hall in Gravity.

Young, George E -

Funeral services for George E. Young were held Monday, April 3, 1989 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Military rites were conducted by Parkinson Post #250 American Legion.  Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery; Lenox, Iowa.

George E Young, son of Charles and Ida Wilbee Young, was born December 22, 1916 in Union County, Iowa He died at his home in Lenox on March 30, 1989, at the age of 72 years, three months and eight days.

George grew up five miles east of Lenox until he was inducted into the service. He served two years in the Army during World War II. After returning home from the service, George was united in marriage to Nina Lucille Reynolds on June 28, 1945.

George was a member of the United Methodist Church and faithfully attended Sunday worship services. He also belonged to the American Legion and the Jolly Time Club, enjoying the monthly card games.

Preceding him in death were his wife Nina who died September 28, 1984, his parents, three brothers and an infant sister. He is survived by his four children: Ronald E. and wife Barbara of Davenport; Carolyn Mauderly and husband Jerome of Bedford; Linda Weeber and

husband John of Lenox; Lois Thompson and husband Jerry of Creston; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer, Ronda and Stephen Young; Douglas and Sarah Mauderly; John, Corina and Cammie Weeber; and Tracy and Jamey Thompson; sister Betty Case of Lenox; three brothers:

Kenneth and Bill of Lenox; and Dale of Madrid; as well as other relatives and friends.

Although George enjoyed playing cards, attending ballgames, and driving his car, his family was the most important part of his life.  The many happy times they spent together will always be cherished.
