Barker, Doris Mae Crowell

Doris
Mae Barker, daughter of Harry J. and Inice M. Firkins
Crowell, was born February 4, 1909, near Gravity in Taylor County, Iowa and
died early January 10, 1989 at the Stanton Care Center where she had made her
home for the past 2½ years.
She
was graduated from Corning High School, attended Drake University and Iowa
State Teachers College (UNI) and taught three years in a rural school near Guss.
On
May 21, 1930 she was united in marriage to Kenneth F. Barker. They farmed in
the Prescott vicinity moving to a farm west of Lenox in 1935. They later
acquired the John Deere dealership and moved into Lenox. Their marriage was
blessed with five children who survive.
Doris
was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW, Order of Eastern Star, and
Mayflower Federated Club, She was a leader in the field of Christian education
and helped organize Girl Scouts in Lenox in the 1940s.
Preceding
her in death were her husband Kenneth in 1983, her parents, a brother Lea J.
Crowell, a sister Juanita Crowell McKinstry, and twin
great grandsons, Michael and Jordan Robinson.
Family
left to cherish her memory are her children: Elene and Duane Heeren of Red Oak, Iowa; Justine and Elvis
Mendenhall of Prescott, Az.; Kevin and Millie Barker of Lenox; Lonnie and
Billie Jean Barker of Lenox; Bill and Becky Barker of Creston; three
sisters-in-law: Lois Bickford of Littleton, Colo.; Leta Crowell of Lenox; Betty Barker of Ottumwa; a brother-in-law James McKinstry of Marshalltown; 17 grandchildren: Brent, Scott,
Lance and Julie Heeren; Jeff and Jed Mendenhall, Joy
Metcalfe, Jill Mahoney, Jayne
Davidson;
Steve Barker, Lynn Irr, Todd Barker, Lahni Robinson, Lisa Maharry,
Sherri Hollinrake, Christine and Rachel Barker; three
step grandchildren: Lynn Brandt, Lonna and Ryan
Spurgeon; and 24 great grandchildren.
Doris
was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, always showing pride and concern for
her family and community. Many neighbors and friends have been blessed by her
kindness. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral
services for Roy E. Bennett were held Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1988 at the United
Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Masonic rites were given by Tremont Lodge # 343 AF and AM.
Military rites were by Parkinson Post #250 American
Legion.
Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
Roy
Edwin Bennett was born on a farm southeast of Lenox to David and Bessie Baker
Bennett on June 29, 1921. He passed away at his home November 19, 1988.
During
World War II, he served his country. On his return, he and his father opened a
shop where Roy invented and manufactured farm equipment.
On
June 5, 1949 Roy was united in marriage to Virginia Reynolds. This union was
blessed with the birth of two children: Jacquelyn (Mrs. Joe) Erspamer of Omaha, and James of Grimes.
Roy
was forced to sell his business after suffering a stroke in 1958. He later went
to work for Tote Systems where he was employed for 15 years.
Roy
was a member of the Lenox Fire Department for 30 years. He was past commander
of Parkinson Post #250; Past Worshipful Master of Tremont Lodge #343 A.F. &
A.M.; Past Patron of Eastern Star; member of BWA of Iowa; and the Clearfield
Lions Club. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lenox.
Those
surviving to honor his memory are his wife Virginia; daughter Jackie and
husband Joe; son Jim and wife Julie; five grandsons: Josh, Jordan and Jared Erspamer and Jacob and Jonathon Bennett, who were the apple
of Grandpa's eyes; two brothers: Arthur of Mapleton, IA.; and Paul of Lenox;
one sister Alice Siverly of Clearfield.
He
will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him, especially the five
grandsons.

services for Gerald Hayes Boydston were held Tuesday,

Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.
Gerald
Hayes Boydston, the son of Charles and Bessie Hayes Boydston, was born March 14, 1908, on a farm near
Shenandoah,
Iowa.
He died February 4, 1989, at the age of 80 years 11 months, at his winter home
in Peoria, Az.
As a
small boy his family moved to a farm near Sharpsburg. On February 1, 1934 he was married to Lorene
Phelan. They spent most of their married life on a farm east of Sharpsburg.
They retired from farming in 1980 and moved to a home in Sharpsburg. He was
a
long-time member of the Masonic Lodge.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife Lorene; two daughters: Patricia Nisely of Denver Colo.; Geraldine Williams of Des Moines,
Iowa; five grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and five great
grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, his sister Gayle Irene and one grandson
Michael Nisely.
He will be deeply missed by his family
and friends.

services were held for Ricky Paul Brandon on Wednesday, December 21 at 10:00
a.m. at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Ted DeHass as the minister. Interment was at Babyland, Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
Ricky
Paul Brandon, son of Jackie Brandon and Terri Brandon, was born at Clarinda,
Iowa on October 31, 1988 and departed this life December 18, 1988 at the
Children's Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the age of seven weeks.
Left
to cherish his memory are his parents, Jackie and Terri of Lenox; his
grandparents; Raymond Brandon of Sharpsburg; Bonnie Brandon of Bedford; Linda
and Floyd Olson of Elmo, Mo.; Charles F. Peterson of Burlington Junction, Mo.;
and his great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Peterson of Burlington
Junction; Martha Wilson of Kansas City, Ks.; and the memory of Ricky will be
cherished
by many other relatives and friends.
Ricky
was loved by his parents and his family, by those who were with him and knew of
him. In the hospital he was baptized by the chaplain.

Burkhalter, Arthur E -
Arthur
F. Burkhalter, son of William and Louise Huewuikel Burkhalter was born
April 21, 1908 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa; and passed away December 11, 1988
at Creston Manor, Creston, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, seven months, 20 days.
He
completed his education in the rural schools of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and moved
to Corning with his parents and family in March, 1923. While living in the Mercer Center area of
Adams County, he met and married Merle Irene Bunting on June 1, 1938. This
union
was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters.
After
the first five years of farming near Stringtown, they
moved to the Cromwell area where he farmed until 1962. The next 21 years he
worked for Creston Roofing and Siding of Creston as a bookkeeper. They moved to
Creston in 1964 where they resided at the time of his death.
Through
the years he was active as a 4-H leader in Adams County, and various community
projects. Upon retiring he was able to devote more time to his gardening and
the roses which were his pride and joy. Saved as a young boy, he loved his Lord
and Savior and devoted much time to serving Him. He was a Sunday school teacher
and deacon at Stringtown Community Church and a
Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Creston where he was a member
at the time of his death.
Besides
singing in the church choir, he also enjoyed singing while going about his
daily activities. He had a special ministry of visiting the shut-in, elderly,
and his many friends. His family was very dear to him and his grandchildren
were a special delight and joy.
Survivors
include his wife Merle, children: Dale and wife Marilyn of Elwood, Neb.; Loren
and wife Lucinda of Chariton, Iowa; Earl and wife Phyllis of Creston; Lela of
Creston; Mary Louise Edwards and husband Paul of Shawnee, Ks.; and Harold of
Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; Philip, David, Andy and Sarah Burkhalter; Tim, Kristen,and Julie Burkhalter; Brian, Lisa, and Lori Burkhalter; Jonathan and Ashleigh Edwards. Also surviving
are two brothers Arnold and Edwin of Creston and four sisters, Rosenia Hunter of Burlington,
Marie
Brown and Lillian Brown of Lenox, Laverne Bovaird of
Prescott, two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and 27 nieces and nephews,
and other relatives arid friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Freida,
and Esther, and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral
services were held at First Baptist Church of Creston December 13, 1988 at
10:30 a.m. with Rev. Norman Hoag and Rev. Ron Schrock officiating. Burial was
in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Iowa.

Green,
Jerry L -
The
Christmas season took a tragic twist Monday afternoon when the body of Jerry L.
Green, 33, of rural Blockton was discovered at his
farm three fourths of a mile north of Athelstan. Green's body was discovered by
his father, Gerald of rural Sheridan, Mo. Jerry's body was found head-first in
a five-foot hole, according to the Taylor County Sheriff's Department.
The
hole was apparently dug in an attempt to correct water problems on the Green
farm.
Dr.
G. Keigh Rowland of Lenox was the medical examiner
and will attempt to determine an exact cause of death.
Survivors
of Jerry L. Green include his wife, Charlene, and their two daughters, Andrea
and Belinda. Andrea is a seventh grader
in
the Bedford Community Schools, while Belinda is a third-grader in the same
school district. Other survivors include a brother, Terry, of Grant City, Mo.,
and a sister, Sherri (Mrs. Fred) Skinner of Blockton.
Funeral
services are pending at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in
Grant City, Mo.

Faye
Alice Heller, the daughter of D.S. and Lida Souder Pennebaker, was born December 27, 1906 in Sharpsburg, Ia.
She died November 28, 1988 in Amarillo, Tx. at the
age of 81 years, 11 months and one day.
She
grew up in the Sharpsburg area and on July 3, 1926, she was married to Clifford
E. Heller in Bedford. They lived in Gravity and moved to Lenox to care for
Faye's parents. After Clifford's death in 1963, Faye worked in the school,
cafe, and in private homes.
She
is survived by her three children: Evelyn and husband Blair Jones of Plainview, Tx., Edward Heller and wife Jeannie of Cleveland,
Ohio, LaDonna Leonard of Amarillo, Tx.; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one
brother: Dr. Evert Pennebaker and wife Bessie of
Lenox; and several nieces and nephews.
Faye
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, and six
brothers.

Ira Joseph -
Ira
Joseph Hogue, 64, of Creston, formerly of Lenox, died Friday afternoon, January
6, 1989 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. He was born September 28,
1924 at Kearney, Neb. to Hubbard D. and Ida Journey Hogue.
As a
young boy, he moved to Lenox, Iowa with his family. He lived and worked in
Lenox for many years until moving to Shenandoah in 1975 where he was employed
by Farm Masters Company. Declining health forced his early retirement in 1983
and he moved to Creston
to
make his home with his mother.
Joe
served with the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the
First Christian Church in Creston.
Preceding
him in death were his son Jerry Lee; his father and a sister, Lula Belle.
Survivors
include his mother, Ida Hogue of Creston; three sisters, Ruth (husband Travis) Boltinghouse of Tucson, Az.; Ona (husband Jim) Wolfe of Graettinger and Dorothy Brown of Fairfield, Ca.; three
brothers, Claude W. (wife Beverly) Hogue of Clearfield, Charles
H.
(wife DeLoma) Hogue of Loveland, Co.; and Lewis B.
(wife Mary) Hogue of Prescott; nieces and nephews and friends.
Services
were conducted at 2 p.m. .on Monday, January 9 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. Reverend Robert Pickerell of
the First Christian Church in Creston officiated.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Military rites were conducted by
the American Legion, Parkinson Post #250.

services for Harold LeRoy McCloud were held Tuesday,
January 3, 1989 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox

Conway Cemetery.
Harold LeRoy McCloud was born May 14, 1916, in Cook, Colo.,
the son of Roy and Eva Dillenberg McCloud. He died
December 31, 1988, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the age of 72
years.
He
married Emma Sandtveit on December 3, 1949, in
Baudette, Minn., where they lived until moving to Sharpsburg in 1971. LeRoy ran a shoe repair and upholstery shop in Lenox until
retiring in 1978.
Surviving
are his wife Emma; their nine children and families: Cynthia McCloud, Belinda
and Mellisa McCloud; Sherry and Lee Newport,
Heather
and Shannon; Jeff and Judy McCloud, Dustin, Clinton and Kristen; Patty and Ken Mottin, Brandon and Travis; Kitty and Randy Peterman,
Tanner and Natasha; Sandra and John Donaldson; Greg McCloud; and Mark McCloud;
one brother Ceasar McCloud; two sisters: Lucille
Morehead and Doris Sandtveit.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Donald and DeWayne.

Lenox, Ia.
Rexine Dale McFee, the daughter of Rolla and Ethel Belvins Brammer, was born
December 20, 1919, near Grand River, Iowa, and passed away November 17, 1988,
at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 17 days.
On
January 20, 1939 she was united in marriage to Francis Wayne McFee in Creston. They spent the first part of their
married life on a farm near Lenox. In 1951 she and Wayne moved to Lenox. She
enjoyed sharing work at McFee Bros. Bowl in Lenox.
Later after
being
confined to her home, she enjoyed her CB radio, where she was known as
"Sugar Plum"
She
is survived by her husband Wayne of Lenox; son Rex of Winterset; one sister
Mary Rink of Winterset; three brothers Joe and Richard Brammer of Lenox; Don McPherson of Lamar, Co.; nine grandchildren; three great
grandchildren and a host of other
relatives
and friends.
She
will be greatly missed by all who have come to know and love her.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Rex and Sonny Brammer, Charles McPherson, and Harold Schaller, and one
sister, Marie Weis.

Cora Norleta Bartrem was born
February 7, 1938 in Iowa City, la., the daughter of Lloyd and Edith Crispy Bartrem. She died on November 21, 1988 at the age of 50
years, nine months and 14 days. ,
In
1957 she was united in marriage to Richard Reed. To this union were born four
children: Andy, Kelly, Sheila, and Lee Ann. They moved to California making
their home there for many years. Norleta has been ill
for many years.
She
is survived by two sons: Andy of Colorado; Kelly of California; two daughters,
Sheila Dukes of Bridgewater; and LeeAnn Reed of
Texas; two grandchildren: Jason and Lisa Dukes; her mother Edith McCormick of
Los Angeles, Ca.; three sisters, Betty Isman of
Lenox,
Melody Bartrem of Omaha, Ne., Nancy Rusco of Pacific Junction, Ia.; two brothers, Donald Bartrem of Los Angeles, Ca., Ronald Bartrem of Omaha, Ne., and many nieces and nephews.

Chester
George Shimer, the son of John and Alice Gold Shimer, was born February 20, 1899, on a farm in Taylor
County, Ia. He died November 28, 1988, at the Greater Community Hospital in
Creston at the age of 89 years, nine months, and eight days.
He
grew up in Taylor County and married Effie Boyer in Bedford on August 19, 1916.
They
farmed their entire lives in Taylor County with the exception of three years in
Adams County. One daughter was born to this union: Marion.
Chester
was a member of the First Christian Church in Lenox.
He
is survived by his wife Effie of Sharpsburg; his daughter Marion Murrenus and husband Westley James of Maywood, Ca. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister,
Alma Fawcett.

Minnie
Beemer, daughter of Simeon and Alice Whitecotton Beemer was born May 23, 1892 at rural Taylor County, Iowa. She passed away
October 31, 1988 at Mariola Nursing Home at Grants
Pass, Oregon.
She
married John F. Bean and they were parents of children, Violet, Gladys, Alice,
Bertha, Frankie and Dick. She had lived in Grants Pass, Ore. since 1943.
Graveside
services were held November 2, 1988 at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park with
Rev. John F. Evans of First Christian Church officiating. Slawson's Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors
include two daughters: Gladys Gibson of Merlin, Ore., and Bertha Foust of San
Diego, Calif.; one sister Grayce Houchin (husband Ivan) of Corning, Iowa; a sister-in-law Mildred (Mrs. John) Beemer of
Sumner, Mo.; seven grandchildren survive and 12 great grandchildren and nine
great great grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by two husbands, John F. Bean in 1960 and Joe E. Triller in 1978. Also by four children, Frankie, Dick,
Alice and Violet and her parents and by sisters, Rella Akers, Molly Rumbaugh, Lottie Ross, Ollie Sturm,
Nellie Blair, Sarah Foster and by

Harold
Welch, only son of Chester and Anna Maude Blair Welch, was born on a farm near
Gravity, Iowa on May 4, 1908. He departed this life on January 26, 1989 at the
age of 80 years.
He
attended rural schools in Grove Township and graduated from Lenox High School
in 1925. He gave his life to Christ at the age of 18, becoming a member of Blue
Grove and later transferring his membership to Lenox Church of Christ. He
served as an elder of the church for 36 years resigning due to ill health.
On
December 25, 1928 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Lena
Martha Harden. They established their home on a farm west of Lenox where they
lived for 47 years, retiring to Lenox from 1975 to 1986, when Lena answered the
Heavenly Father's
call.
Since then he has resided in the Clearview Home in
Clearfield.
In
1941 Harold became a member of Tremont Lodge #343 in Lenox, where he served as
Master in 1945 and 1981. In 1942 he became instructor in Ritualistic Work of
the Masonic Lodge. He had the privilege of giving the Masonic work to his
father Chester, son-in-law Donald Shepherd, and his son Eugene; also serving as
Installing Officer by installing Eugene as Master of two lodges: Lodge #590 in
Nodaway and Tremont Lodge #343 in Lenox. At the time of his death he was a
member of Noble Lodge in Clearfield.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and wife Lena.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his son Eugene of Lenox; daughter Twila Jean and husband Donald Shepherd of LaVista, Neb.;
granddaughter
Terri Twylene and husband Terry Haley of Elkhorn, Neb.;
grandson Rick Shepherd and wife Terri Sue of Omaha; four great grandchildren
whom he dearly loved: Jesse, Kimberly, and Jayme Haley; and Amy Shepherd.
His
earthly toil is finished and he was ready to answer his Master's call. He will
be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

26, 1989 at First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.
Charles Wiand, the son of Frank H. and Lulu A. Colegrove Wiand, was born
February 27, 1907 in Lenox, Iowa. He died unexpectedly in Mt. Ayr on January 23, 1989 while waiting on repairs to his
car.
He
grew to manhood on a farm and on February 12, 1930 he was married to Lela Alice
Boyer in Taylor County. They farmed most of their lives southwest of Lenox and
moved into Lenox in 1978. Two sons were born to this union, James and Donald.
Charles
is survived by his sons: James and wife Betty of Bentonville, Ark.; Donald D.
and wife Pat of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two
sisters, Loretta Wiand of Las Vegas, Nev. and Martha Normile of San Bernadino, Calif.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lela, and two brothers Francis and
Henry.
