Austin, Clarence Raymond -

Clarence Raymond Austin was born July 30, 1907 to Alva Ray Austin and Julia Isabelle Force Austin at St. Edward,

Nebraska. As a young boy of 9 years he moved with his parents, in 1916, to a farm south of Mount Ayr, Iowa. During this

time he worked as hired farm hand around Blockton and Bedford. [Died Sept 24, 1994]

In 1938 he met Nellie Shaffer and on September 4, 1929 they were married in Mount Ayr. They started farming south

and east of Clearfield, Iowa. In 1936 they moved to Lenox, Iowa and farmed there until February 1944 when they moved to

Diagonal, Iowa on the Bliss farm, where they have made their home for 50 years.

Clarence and Nellie were blessed with 4 children, 3 sons and a daughter; Charles and wife Mary, Eddie and wife Bessie,

Tom and wife Liane, and Virginia and husband Charles Morris; 13 grandchildren, Dixie Baker, Mike Austin, Becky Stamps,

Mick Austin, John Austin, Terri Bernhardt, Marilyn Goodrich, Susan Gwinner Maria Monge, Steve Austin, Roni Austin,

Chad Austin and Kelly Morris; 18 great grandchildren, Amy Baker, Shane Austin, Kerry Austin, Jason Stamps, Kylene Stamps,

Alec Austin, Elena Austin, Emerald Gwinner, Jill Goodrich, Jared Goodrich, Josh Goodrich, Dean Monge, Dawn Monge,

Nathan Austin, Cody Austin, Ryan Austin, Adam Austin and Andrea Austin; 1 great great grandchild, Melissa Austin; 2

brothers, Sam Austin of Grant City, Mo. and Eugene Austin of Arbra, La.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Phyllis Austin of 14 months, Lucille Cain and Lois Willett; 2 brothers,

Jim and Harley; and 1 great grandson Paul Austin.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Clearfield, Iowa on Tuesday, September 27, 1994 at 10:30

o'clock am. Rev. Eydie Stephens officiated and music was by Mrs. Harold Taylor and Curt Turner.

Casketbearers were Mick Austin, Mike Austin, Chad Austin, John Austin, Steve Austin, and Steve Stamps.

He was laid to rest at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa with arrangements by Wilson-Watson Service.

Beck, Rose Barbara -

Funeral services for Rose B. Beck of Lenox were held Sunday, July 31, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Music was provided by LeAnn Morris and Margaret Whipp. Casket bearers were Roy Beck, Duane Beck, Harold Beck, Leonard Morris, Phil Morris and Eldon Jenkins. Honorary bearers were Howard Morris, Donald Beck, Kenneth Beck, Vernon Beck and Bill Beck.

Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Rose B. Beck, daughter of Philip Gotlieb Beck and Barbara Ursula Sager, was born on a farm southwest of Lenox on Sept. 5, 1894.

Later the Beck family moved to miles south and one half west of Lenox, where she lived until she and her mother moved into Lenox in 1954. In 1991, when she could no longer live alone, she entered the Lenox Care Center. Rose died on July 27 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the age of 99 years, 10 months and 22 days.

She received her education in the rural schools of Taylor County and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lenox, which merged with the United Presbyterian Church. She attended faithfully until she was no longer able.

Although Rose had no children of her own, she was like a mother to her nieces, nephews and their families who all dearly loved her.

She is survived by her sister, Emma Beck of St. Joseph, Mo.; sister-in-law Irene Beck of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding here in death were her parents; a sister Mary, and her five brothers, George, Charley, Albert, Johnny and Herman.

Funeral services for Travis Clifford Boltinghouse of Tucson, Ariz., were held Friday, August 5, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox

with Rev. Robert Shreve officiating. Music was provided by Don Wilson and Paula Sink. Casket bearers were Jim Boltinghouse, David Boltinghouse, Wade Boltinghouse, Royce Boltinghouse, Terry Booth and Steve Basler.

Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials are to Lenox and Sharpsburg fire departments, the Lenox

Ambulance Service and the Tucson, Ariz. Ambulance Service.

Travis was the third son of Alonzo and Eva Leonard Boltinghouse. He was born April 9, 1919 at the family farm located southwest of

Lenox. He died Monday, August 1, 1994 at his home in Tucson at the age of 75 years, three months and 22 days.

He grew up on the farm near Lenox and was baptized at the Blue Grove Church of Christ. Travis completed eight years of elementary education at Frog Pond country school, and then graduated from Corning High School in 1937.

He purchased an 80-acre tract of land near his parents' farm in December 1939. He and Ruth J. Hogue were united in marriage on August 27, 1940, at Maryville, Mo. The had three sons: James Allen, Larry Lyle and Reldon Duane. In 1947 the family moved

to the state of Washington for a short time. When they returned to Iowa, they purchased a home in Creston, where Travis worked as a

fireman with the railroad before taking a position as district manager for a feed company. His employment took the family to Falls City, Neb;, Sabetha, Kansas and then back to Lenox in 1960. He purchased a farm located one mile south of Sharpsburg in 1963 and began working his own land and raising his own livestock again. His failing health forced him to retire from fanning in 1982. He and Ruth moved to Loveland, Colo., and then in 1987 to Tucson.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Tucson; sons James (wife Mary) of Lenox, Larry (wife Sandra) of Tucson, and Reldon of Sharpsburg;

grandchildren Jim (wife Sheila) Boltinghouse of Germantown, Tenn., David (wife Sue) Boltinghouse of Fremont, Neb, Sue Ann (husband Wes) Boltinghouse-Henning of Maryville, Mo., Wade (wife Amy) Boltinghouse of Tucson, Janet (husband Jeff) Humes stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Spain, Holly (husband Terry) Booth of Sharpsburg, Royce Boltinghouse of Sharpsburg, and Nicki Wyant of Corpus Cristi, Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Jimmy Boltinghouse, Britney and Brianne Boltinghouse, Jordan and Abigail Boltinghouse, Kayla

Funeral services for Ethel Casey, 74, of Creston were held June 20 at Keating-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home in Creston, with Rev. Thomas W. Woodin of the United Methodist Church in Creston officiating. Casket bearers were Dick Cullen, Elmer McCay, Dennis

Ethel resided in the Nevinville community until moving to Lenox in 1946. She moved to Creston in 1968. She died on June 16 at Greater

Community Hospital in Creston. She was born March 24, 1920, in Nevinville to Ted Callan and Margaret Warwick. On March 21, 1969, she married Ray Casey in Creston.

Survivors include her husband, Ray; stepsons Duane Casey (wife Judy) of Villisca, Larry Casey (wife Babe) of Centerville, and Stephen Casey of Audubon; four stepgrandchildren; sisters Carrie Bennett (husband Roy) of Creston, Clara Belknap (husband Don) of Tempe, Ariz., and Florence Davis of Tempe.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Karl Eberle (married in 1946; Karl died in 1963), and brother Bill Callan.

Clinton, Carl Lawerence -

Carl Lawerence Clinton, 83, died on June 22 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

He attended school in Creston and on March 31, 1939 he was married to Beulah Brown. Carl farmed most of his life six miles east of Lenox. He enjoyed fishing, camping and especially gardening. In the early 1960's, Carl and Beulah moved to Lenox to retire.

Carl was born on May 13, 1911, to William and Mary Herzog Clinton in Massena.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 25, at Larkin & Shelley Funeral Home in Lenox, with Rev. Mister Jerry Leininger of St. Patricks Catholic Church officiating.

Music was provided by Bonnie Halligan, organist. Interment was at Morgan Cemetery in Kent. Memorials were established to the Fountain in the Park of Lenox.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirley, (husband Short) Rogers of Lenox; brothers Kenneth (wife Marion) Clinton of San Diego

and Francis (wife Kathie) Clinton of Phelan, Calif.; sisters Inez White and Dorothy Miller, both of Creston; grandchildren

Sherri Rogers, Dave Rogers, Lorri Glover and Julie (husband Dave) Lundquist; great-grandchildren Skip Rogers, JaLynne and Keaton

Lundquist; brother-in-law Max Badgett of Lenox; sister-in-law Bonnie Monroe of Lenox; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dickerson, Burl B -

Burl B. Dickerson was born at Mt. Ayr on July 4, 1908 to William and Imogene (Stark) Dickerson and passed away June 16, 1994 in the

Lenox Care Center in Lenox.

He married Ruth Coverdell in October 1933.  They had two daughters, Barbara and Claudia.

0n July 29, 1961, he married Aileene Hogue Monaghan and accepted her three children, James, Debra and Jeffrey, as his own.

He lived most of his life in Ringgold County, Iowa, except for 10 1/2 years when he lived in Bentonville, Ark., and his last year in Lenox.

He worked various jobs in Ringgold County; Mutt Holland Cafe, Ellston Telephone, owned Texaco, worked at Chevrolet Garage, Ringgold County Hospital and retired from Contel Telephone in 1973 after eight years.

Burl loved fishing, dancing, playing cards and listening to country music. When his health failed his wife, Aileene, took care of him

as long as she was able. He entered the Lenox Care Center on Feb. 24, 1994.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Barbara; sister Fern Smith; and brothers Dale and Evan.

Survivors include his wife Aileene; daughters Claudia (husband Larry) Schwienebart of Baxter, Iowa; Debra (husband Glenn) Grout of

Lenox; sons James Monaghan, Jeffrey and Cindy Monaghan of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, including Rachael and Melissa Grout; three great grandchildren; sister Oma Reynolds of Ames; brothers Hollis (wife Madge) Dickerson of Des Moines, George (wife Laurie) of

Tulsa, Okla., and Percy (wife Virginia) Dickerson of Greenfield, Iowa; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Virginia Bennett of Lenox has received word that former resident John Fuerst of Baxter Springs, Kansas passed away

Saturday, August 6, at a hospital in Joplin, Mo. John and his father Ed were managers of the Lencor Manufacturing Co. when it

came to Lenox.

John is survived by his wife Lorene; daughter Dana; Ron Eddie; three grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; parents Ed and

Lucile of Baxter Springs; brother Paul of Baxter Springs; and a brother and sister in Texas.

Goodale, William A -

William A. Goouale was born to William H. and Mary Armina Johnston Goodale on April 28, 1910 at Diagonal, Ia. He passed away on August 2, 1994. He was the youngest of seven children.

On May 22, 1936 he was married to Opal Lorene Rice at Mt. Ayr, Iowa,

He lived in Diagonal, Benton and Bedford as a youth, coming back to Diagonal when a junior in high school. Later he was a farmer and

small dairyman. He was almost a lifetime member of the Methodist church and attended till health no longer permitted.

Preceding him in death were parents, sisters Madge and husband John Roudybush, Alice and husband Fred Morris, Laura and husband

Paul Ridge, Nettie Mae who died in infancy. Also brother Earl and wife Retha Johnson Goodale, and Leroy Steele who died in infancy. A

granddaughter, Sonja Simcoke, a grandson, Eric Derry and son-in-law, Richard Simcoke also preceded him in death.

He is survived by wife, Opal, daughters, Linda Simcoke of St. Petersburg, FL, Vicki and husband Melvin Derry of Des Moines, Rochelle

and husband, John Cook of Creston, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Lawrence Russell Grace, 55, were held June 11 at the United Church of Diagonal with Rev. Pam Farren

Honorary pallbearers were Don Hays, John Whittington, Don David and Richard Hays. Organist was Mrs. John Whittington.

Lawrence Russell Grace was born to Ora Russell and Francis Delores (Ecklin) Grace on Feb. 19, 1939, near Bedford.

Lawrence died at the age of 55 on June 8, 1994 while working on a construction job in Fremont, Neb.

On Feb. 3, 1957, he was married to Lois Marie Hutchinson of Bedford. To this union four children were born: Robert Russell, Virginia Marie, Larry Lee and Brenda Kay. Lawrence raised his family in Ringgold County where he spent his lifetime. He worked

construction 25 years and was a self-employed truck driver for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis, Father Ora and a sister, Phyllis.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughters Virginia and Brenda; sons Robert and Larry; Robert's wife, Pam; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Steve; stepmother Marie; mother-in-law Florence; brother Doyle; sisters Jeanette and Debbie; a step-brother Larry

Waugh; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Grindstaff, Rolland -

Clearfield businessman Rolland Grindstaff passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Sept. 30.

He moved to Clearfield in 1972 to farm, and later went into the plumbing business with sons Craig and Kyle, who will continue the family

business of Grindstaff Plumbing and Heating.

Also known as "Ron" and "Grinder," he was born in Mt. Ayr on June 26, 1939, to Lester and Meda (Stuck) Grindstaff.

In 1957 Rolland joined the navy and served an as aviation electronics technician. After a short time on road construction, he married Linda Longfellow on August 4, 1962, in Las Vegas. They moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where Rolland worked for AT&T, Pacific Bell and later AT&T in Kansas City.

In 1972 he moved to Clearfield and started to farm. Later he pursued his father's plumbing occupation.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; sons Craig and Kyle; granddaughter Katy; mother Meda; sisters Beatrice Scroggie (husband Charles) of Peona, Ariz., Sherry Hebensperger (husband Ken) of Mt. Ayr; brother Dean (wife Ann) of Lansing, Kansas; sisters-in-law Julia Day (husband Dean) of Blue Grass, Iowa, Alice Marley (husband Jim) of Dallas, Texas; brothers-in-law Jerry Longfellow of Bedford, and

Paul Longfellow (wife Anita) of Lenox; granddaughter Katy; 20 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lester.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 3, at the Clearfield Christian Church with Rev. Eydie Stephens and Rev. Al Rusk officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Erwood Huffman, Mrs. Harold Nelson and Mrs. Richard Spurrier.

Casket bearers were Jeff Longfellow, Mike Scroggie, Carlin Scroggie, Gary Longfellow, Aaron Longfellow and Gerry Grindstaff.

Honorary pallbearers were Roy Lillach, Alan Larsen. Jeff Wood, Gaylan Bell, Larry Sickels, Dwain Callies, Richard Spurrier, Larry Gepner, Grover Mains, Cheiko Harrison, Darl Bell, Al Brammer, and Gary Heimke.

Matheny, Claude LaVern -

Funeral services for Claude LaVern Matheny were held Wednesday, August 31, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating. Music was provided by Norma Paymal, Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck.

Casket bearers were Charles, Mike and Chad Matheny, Dave Snedeker, Eric Shimer and Kevin Shaw. Interment was in Platteville Cemetery, Platteville.

Claude LaVern Matheny, son of Josiah Harrison and Ruth Alma Reeves Matheny, was born May 14, 1909 at Platteville, Iowa. He died

unexpectedly on Sunday, August 28, at Mercy Hospital in Corning. He was 85 years old.

He grew up in the Platteville area and attended Platteville schools. On June 23, 1933, he was married to Crystal Evans in Maryville, Mo.

They had six children. Claude and Crystal lived the past 50 years in Lenox, where he worked as a mechanic for Barker Implement and

later for Bowman Garage in Clearfield. They were active members of the Union Squares and attended southwest Iowa square dances until Crystal broke her hip a year ago.

Claude is survived by his wife, Crystal of Lenox; children Eldon and wife Ruth of Lenox, Harry and wife Sandie of Edwardsville, Kansas, Gail and wife Mary of Lenox, Leonard and wife Melinda of Bedford, Betty Shimer and husband Dell of Creston; 11 grandchildren,

14 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Straight of Clearfield, and many nieces and nephews.

Claude was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joe, Jim, Paul, Wilbur and John; two sisters, Ruby Smith and Amy Stewart,

daughter Louise at age 2-1/2; and grandson Chester LaVern Matheny.

McMichael, Opal Darlene Shaffer -

Opal Darlene McMichael of Grimes, Iowa, daughter of John and Myrtle Shaffer, was born on July 11, 1927, at Clearfield and passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on July 10, 1994, the day before her 67th birthday.

Opal lived in Clearfield during her early life, graduating from Clearfield High School in 1945. She attended AIB College in Des

Moines, where she continued working after her schooling.

She was united in marriage to Ralph E. McMichael of Des Moines on August 30, 1946. They made their home in Des Moines and

later moved to Grimes, although she continued to work in Des Moines.

She is survived by sisters Fern Spurrier of Clearfield and Margaret Henderson of Lenox; brothers Donavan Shaffer and

wife Betty of Loveland, Colo.; Delbert Shaffer and wife Audrey of Lafayette, Colo.; and Gilbert Shaffer and wife Charlene of Clearfield; sister-in-law Irma Shaffer of Loveland, Colo.; brother-in-law Harvey French of Bedford; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, who passed away on Jan. 16, 1993; her parents; one sister, Louise French; one brother, Clyde Shaffer; and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 14, at the  Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines, with Pastor Bruce Wittern presiding. Interment was in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.

Miller, Catherine Jennings -

Catherine Miller, 75, died on Wed., Aug. 17, at her home in Fairfield Bay. She was born on Feb. 15, 1919, in Topeka, Kan. She was the daughter of Chester and Blanche Jennings of Topeka.

She and her husband, Frank, moved to the area in 1972. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Methodist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Frank Miller; a son, Jerry Cox of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Judy Moorhead and her husband, Bud, of

Baudette, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Ellsworth and her husband, Bill, of Durant, Iowa; and five grandchildren and two

great-grandchildren.

The body was donated to a Little Rock medical facility for research.

Monk, Eva L Greer -

Eva L. Monk was born to Charles and Cassie Greer near Bedford, Iowa on April 25, 1903. She entered into rest September 6, 1994 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 6 days. She made her home with her daughter, Theola, for nearly 10 years before coming a resident of Clearview home for the past 2 and a half years.

Eva attended East Mission school near Bedford. On November 19, 1922 she was united in marriage to Claude Edward Monk in Bedford. To this union were born 6 children; Cecil Edward, Darrell Eugene, Theola Marine, Ronald Edward, Phyllis Ilene and Paul Ivan. Claude passed away June 17, 1960.

Eva spent most of her life in Taylor Co. She attended the United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. She thoroughly enjoyed attending the activities and being a member of the family at Clearview Home She spent much of her time crocheting.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband Claude in 1960, a son Cecil in 1990, a son-in-law, Lloyd Cameron in 1983, and a granddaughter

Pam Gourley in 1986, 2 sisters Elsie Miller and Goldie Wood, arid a brother Perle Greer.

Surviving are her children; Darrell (wife Verla) of Clearfield, Theola Cameron of Clearfield, Ronald "Bud" (wife Bev) of Marshalltown, Phyllis (husband Jack) Gourley of Lenox, Paul (wife Barbara) of Des Moines, a daughter-in-law Bertha Monk of Boulder Co., twin sister Ava (husband Fred) Bruner of Clearfield, sister-in-law, Thelma Greer of Sacramento, Ca., 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church, Clearfield, Friday, September 9, 2 p.m., with Rev. .Alan Rusk officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Erwood Huffman and Mrs. Kenny Nelson.

Casketbearers were Jim Parrish, John Parrish, Dean Lyddon, Delbert Routh, Jack Miller and Richard Spurrier. Interment was at

Clearfield Cemetery. Wilson-Watson Service was in charge of arrangements.

Thompson, Harry D -

Funeral services for Harry D. Thompson, Corning, were held Sunday, June 19, at the First Presbyterian Church in Corning with Rev. Kenneth Rummer officiating. Casketbearers were Doug Sickler, Paul Van EngelenHoven, Bob Dunn, John Russell, Merl Jackson

and Jim Ruppert. Honorary casketbearers  were August Bauer, Byron Stanley, Ernie Foster, Carl Zimmermann, Eddie Chavez, Paul Gauthier, and Bill Sinning. Interment was at Methodist Grove Cemetery in Brooks, Iowa.

Harry D. Thompson was born May 14, 1910, in Corning and died June 16, 1994, at Mercy Hospital in Corning at the age of 84.

He was born to Frank and Eva Pearl Hough Thompson. He was born and lived in Corning all of his life. He made a bicycle trip to California and back at the age of 16.

On Nov. 14, 1931, he married Edna Spring in Nodaway, Iowa. They had a son, Gary.

Harry owned and operated a radio-TV service and sales business in Corning until retirement in 1972. He was also a pilot and flew for 14 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Corning, where he served as an elder. He was also a member of American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce and was a former member of Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife Edna; son Gary (wife Judy) of Corning; sister Ramona Kneer of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandson Brent Thompson (wife Sally) of Corning; and greatgrandchildren Devin and Blake of Corning.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Thompson, of Phoenix, Ariz.

Roland-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
