Arnold, Jay P -

J.P.(Jay) Arnold, 84, of Hot Springs, Arkansas died Thursday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center there. Services were at Highland Park Funeral Home in Des Moines, with burial at Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Arnold was born in Marion County but lived in Lenox during his youth. His parents O. P. (Pete) and Arlie Arnold owned and operated a funeral home in Lenox for many years.

Jay graduated from Lenox High School in 1931 and was a faithful supporter of Lenox, returning often to the alumni Banquets. He was a Lenox Historian, keeping up where people lived and thoroughly enjoying a visit with any Lenoxite.

He moved to Des Moines in 1948 and became founder and owner of Arnold's Highland Park Funeral Home until retiring to Hot Springs in 1983. He also was past owner of Travel Host Inc. in Des Moines.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Des Moines Consistory, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Elks Lodge, Highland Park Christian Church, Auburn Masonic Lodge and the Royal Order of Jesters in Hot Springs.

Surviving are his wife, Velda, a son, J.Dean of El Cerrito, California; a daughter, JoAnn Strait of Des Moines; a grandchild; and a great grandchild.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital.

Blair, Roger Dean -

Services for Roger Dean Blair was held November 14, 1997 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning, with Father Dan Siepker officiating.

Music was provided by Marilea Mullin as Pianist and Melodie Miller as Cantor.

Casket Bearers were Sam Richey, Junior Kernen, Dwight Jackson, Richard Bartholomew, Jim Bartholomew, and Bruce Damewood. Honorary Bearers were Don Lyle, Ed Blair, Doug Allison, Jerry Leininger, Paul Gauthier, and Bill Dimmler.

Roger Dean Blair was born in Lenox on March 3, 1940 to Paul Leroy and Vada Faye (Elaine) Blair, he died at his home in Corning, Iowa on November 11, 1997 at the age of 57 years, 8 months, and 8 days.

Roger attended school in Lenox and graduated in 1959. Upon graduation, he worked at the Lenox Time Table as a

pressman. In 1961, he entered the United States Air Force. He served most of his active duty at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California.

On November 23, 1963, Roger married DeAnna Marie Cantieri at St. Patrick Catholic in Corning, Iowa. Three children completed their family; Lisa Marie, Raymond Eugene and Anne Marie.

Roger worked at a variety of occupations including as a printing pressman, a waste water treatment operator, and in building maintenance. He and DeAnna also owned and operated a motel for nine years. Due to deteriorating health, he was forced to retire in 1991.

Roger was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Corning American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Blair.

Roger is survived by his wife, DeAnna of Corning, Iowa; his parents, Paul and Vada Calvin of Lenox and Daisy Blair of Garland, Texas; daughter, Lisa (Doug) Allison of Corning, Iowa; son, Ray (Staci) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and daughter, Anne (Bill Dimmler) of Corning, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Lauren, Billy, Alexa, Ian and Sydney. Survivors also include his siblings: Sheila Bovee of Dawson, Minnesota; Bruce Blair of Las Vegas, Nevada; Evelyn Marty of Garland, Texas; LeeAnn Tatum of Garland, Texas; and Ed Blair of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Corning, Iowa with military rites by the OURCQ Post #117 Corning American Legion.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Patrick Church Restoration Fund.

Brand, Edith Pearl Hutchison -

Edith Pearl (Hutchison) Brand was born on March 4, 1903 and departed this life on November 26, 1997 at the

Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa.

Edith was born near Gage, Okla., to John Alpheus and Gertrude Belle Maude (Greer) Hutchison. The Hutchison family had moved from Bedford, Iowa to Oklahoma before Edith was born. In 1913 the family moved from Oklahoma to Culdesac, Idaho where they homesteaded a small farm. In 1916 they moved to Montana.

Edith graduated from the Forsyth, Montana High School, being in the first class to graduate from the new high school.

In 1922 after graduation, Edith returned to the Bedford area where her Aunt Mae Brand lived. On June 11, 1923

she married Roy Brand. They lived in the Kent, Creston and Shannon City areas. In 1958 they moved to Clearfield.

Roy passed away in 1967 and Edith continued in that home until 1981. She moved to Clearfield Manor where she

lived until she entered Clearview Home in 1996.

Edith was baptized at an early age and attended the Church of God. She also attended the Clearfield

Methodist Church as health permitted.

She leaves to mourn her two daughters: Waunita Sobotka (husband, Leo) and Bernita Tharp (husband Don); step-son

Carl Brand (wife Martha); nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Preceding her were her parents, husband a brother, Roy Hutchison.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997 at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Patty Parrish and Deb Briggs.

Casketbearers were Everett Tribolet, Earl Tribolet, Russell Akers, Dan Huey, Larry Brand, and Carroll Baker.

Interment was at the Clearfield Cemetery. Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Christensen, Lloyd Valdemar -

Services for Lloyd Christensen was held November 28, 1997 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa with Rev. Ron Bamett officiating.

Music was provided by Steve Lamb as organist.

Pallbearers were Denny Simms, Ty Theulen, Daniel Schoenthal, Michael Anderson, Earl Guttenfelder and Henry

Schoenthal.

Lloyd Valdemar Christensen was born in Benton township of Cass County Iowa on October 29, 1917 the son of Chris and Anna Ingeborg Nielsen Christensen. He grew up in the Atlantic area where he attended schools. After his formal schooling he worked for Youngs Furniture in Atlantic.

He was married to Claribel Goodwin at Kansas City in 1939. They lived in Atlantic, and Lloyd entered the United States Army during WWII. He served in Europe under General Patton and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After service he returned to Atlantic and worked in the furniture store before starting his own business, Christensen Floor Covering and Draperies. His wife Claribel preceded him in death in 1978. On October 18, 1983 he was married to Cleone Jayne Garside at Atlantic. He retired from his business and they have lived in Atlantic since that time.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church; a member of the V.F.W. since returning from service; was a member of the Elks Lodge; and of the Nishna Golf club.

Surviving are his wife Cleone; one son Judge David Christensen and wife Judy of Lenox; on step-daughter Sarah Davis and husband James of Thurmont, Maryland; three grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Carrie Christensen of Lenox; two step-grandchildren, James Davis and Joseph Davis of Thurmont, Maryland; three sisters, Astrid Anderson of Atlantic, Carla Turner and husband Kenneth of Anita, and Irma Nelson of Atlantic; nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife Claribel; one son Phillip Christensen; two brothers, Norman Christensen and Erling Christensen and one sister Hilda Butler.

Interment was in Southlawn Memory Gardens in Atlantic, Iowa with military rites.

Dukes, Dorothy I Bivens -

Funeral services for Dorothy I Dukes of Lenox were held Thursday, Dec. 4, at Lenox United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Music was provided by Roberta Lockhart, organist.

Pallbearers were Lafe Dukes, Jr. Cordell, Curtis Dukes, Tyson Dukes, Bob Jameson and Travis Dukes. Honorary pallbearers were Brad Dukes, Darin Hancock, Brock Brown, David Dukes, Luke Brown and Terry Shearer.

Burial was at East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Dorothy passed away Nov. 30, 1997, at her home. She was 76 years old.

Dorothy was a lifelong Lenox resident. She was born Dec. 6, 1920 in Lenox to Charles and Helen Neiderheiser Bivens. She graduated from Lenox High School.

On May 25, 1940, Dorothy married Russel Dukes in a ceremony held in Bethany, Mo. They were blessed with four sons and six daughters.

Dorothy was a member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church and was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She had been a homemaker all of her life. Along with raising a family, Dorothy worded as a volunteer at Lenox Care Center, Taylor Ridge Estates, and the Taylor County Neighborhood Center in Lenox.

Survivors include two sons, Allen (wife Debra) of Lenox and Leroy (wife Kay) of Bedford; six daughters, Wilma Sanson of Creston; Helen (Mrs. Kenny) Hinshaw of Clearfield; Linda Cordell of Lenox; Kathie (Mrs. Hugh) Warner of Lenox; Lori (Mrs. David) Brown of Lenox and Bobbi (Mrs. Tony) Konkler of Carroll, Iowa; sister Mildred (Mrs. Ernie) McGraw of Meadow Bridge, W.V.; 22 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband Russel; two sons Gary Lee and Charles Leslie, her parents; and brother Francis Bivens.

Memorials should be sent to the family.

Gleckler, Grace Clipson -

Services for Grace Clipson Gleckler were held at the First Methodist Church in Indianola on October 31, 1997.

She is survived by her husband Ben Gleckler of Indianola, three daughters Susan Scott (Fred) of Muscatine; Lois Downs (Craig) of Columbus Junction; Mary Morton (David) of Marion; and one son George Gleckler (Susan) of Mitchell, South Dakota and 13 grandchildren.

She is also survived by two sisters Joyann Moore (Jack) of Northridge, California and Phyllis Rittgers (Tom) of Nevada, Iowa.

Grace was born March 3, 1920 to Hugh and Gertrude Clipson, longtime residents of the Lenox Community, both of whom preceded her death. She attended High School in Lenox and graduated with the class of 1937.

Interment was in the New Virginia Cemetery.

Gray, Charles Edward -

Charles Edward Gray was born March 9, 1929, in Lenox, Iowa, one of seven sons of Perry Ivan Gray and Bernice

Hall (Larimer) Gray. He spent most of his life in the Lenox area where he graduated from Lenox High School in 1948.

Charles was in the United States Army from 1950-1952. He worked for the railroad for a few years, and in 1958 he began working for the telephone company. He did this until 1987 when he retired for health reasons.

He died December 4, 1997, at the North Kansas City Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 68 years, 8 months 25 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Billie and James.

Those who survive him are his brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard and Wilma Gray of Lenox, Robert and Maxine

Gray of Soap Lake, Wash., John (Jack) and Judy Gray of Bondurant, and Thomas and Kay Gray of Lincoln, NE, and

Sister-in-law, Lucille Gray of Des Moines as well as nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Pastor Audrey Westendorf of the Lenox United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held Saturday evening.

Serving as pallbearers were Jim Gray, Jeff Gray, Dean Larimer, Bill Oliver, Bill Hawhee, and Jim Baker. Paula

Sink provided music as organist.

Parkinson Post #250 of the Lenox American Legion provided military rites.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Charles Gray.

Harrison, Fuku (Chicko) -

Fuku "Chieko" Harrison 65, of 704 3rd Street, Clearfield, Iowa passed away on November 5, 1997 at the Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Harrison was born on January 2,1932 in Sendai, Japan to Kesaji and Tari Shoji. She was employed by the Seiko Watch Company until she married Lorn Harrison in 1959 and moved to the United States.

She later divorced and resided in Correctionville, Iowa until 1986 when she relocated to Clearfield, Iowa. Shortly after, she became owner of Chieko's Bar and Grill. She retired in 1995.

Survivors include one daughter Eimi, husband Danny Paulk, two granddaughters, Nicole and Lacee Paulk all of Lakeland, Georgia and several special friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 9, 1967 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home in Clearfield, Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Jean Huffman.

Chieko will be laid to rest at Panama City Beach, Florida.

Olson, Clarence Gustaf -

Clarence Gustaf Olson, the son of Elizabeth (Haering) and Gustaf Olson was born in Millard, Nebraska on March

18, 1904. As a small boy, he moved with his parents to a farm three miles west of Lenox where he grew to manhood

and then began farming the same land on his own in 1929.

On June 29, 1931, Clarence was united in marriage with Eleanor Constance Drumm of Bedford, Iowa. One daughter, Barbara, was born to bless this union.

In 1980, Clarence retired from farming. Eleanor and he moved to a new house on a three acre plot of land he

owned across the road where he did gardening as a hobby.

Clarence was a member of the Lenox Presbyterian Church.

He died November 18, 1997, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the age of 93 years, 7 months, 29 days.

Preceding him in death were his wife Eleanor on July 25, 1997, his parents, his brother Philip Olson and a sister Elin Scott.

Those surviving to honor his memory are a daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Tom Ferguson of West Des Moines;

two grandchildren: Lori Whitehead and husband Doug and Cindi Ferguson, all of West Des Moines; a sister Esther Campbell of Des Moines; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 20, 1997, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church

with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Visitation was held Thursday morning at Coen - Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Serving as pallbearers were Doug Whitehead, Larry Campbell, Arnold Stone, Lanny Douglas, Monty Douglas, and Junior Roush.

Donald Tully was an honorary pallbearer.

Roberta Lockhart as organist provided accompaniment for the congregation as they sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "This is My Father's World".

Rainforth, Harold D -

Harold D. Rainforth, 81, of Richmond, Mass, passed away November 5, 1997.

He was born in Gravity, Iowa on Dec. 9, 1915, the son of Francis R. and Harriet Fleming Rainforth. He was a

1933 graduate of Gravity High School. He attended Maryville College in St. Louis, Missouri for two years and the University of Cincinnati, until he was drafted in April 1942.

He served in the Army and attended Gunnery School in Fort Sill, Okla., and taught there from 1942 to 1943. He

was discharged with the rank of Major in 1946. In 1948, he graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in

mechanical engineering.

He leaves his wife, the former Ardyce Instenses, whom he married Jan. 19, 1946; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine

Simpson of Holden and Miss Beverly Rainforth of Binghamton, N.Y.; a son, Richard Rainforth of Dumont,

NJ.; three brothers, Gerald Rainforth of Bedford, Iowa; Norman Rainforth of Papillion, Neb., and Gordon Rainforth of New Market, Iowa, and two grandchildren.

Services were held November 8 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Following cremation burial will be in Gravity, Iowa at a later date.

Rogers, Jane Ann Patterson -

Jane Ann Rogers, the daughter of George Samuel Patterson and Mary Heffernen Patterson, was born July 17, 1926, at Cascade, Iowa.

Jane graduated from the Monticello Public School in Monticello, Iowa in 1943. In the fall of 1943, she entered Lindenwood College at St. Charles, Missouri. In the fall of 1945, she transferred to the University of Iowa at Iowa City, graduating in June of 1947.

In the fall of 1947, Jane began teaching at Martelle, Iowa. She also taught at Atkins, Monticello, Delhi, Onslow, Miles and Lenox.

Jane and Ralph were married May 19, 1956, and she remained in teaching until her retirement in 1988. She spent 40 years in teaching and the last 20 years were in Lenox where she taught High School science classes.

Jane enjoyed gardening and golf. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.

Jane died November 6, 1997, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 19 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jane is survived by her husband Ralph Rogers of Lenox; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Jeanne Patterson of Minneapolis, Minn.; two nieces, Cnrista Marie and Courtney Jane Patterson of Minneapolis and San Francisco; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 10, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation was held Sunday at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Bunch, Erin Maguire, Henry Schnieder, Steve Westphal, Paul Parkhurst and Norbert Bradley. Honorary Pallbearers were Vernal Thompson, Ron Fulk, Otis Chubick, Keigh Howland, Ed Williams and George Wessels.

Roberta Lockhart as organist provided accompaniment as the congregation sang, "Amazing Grace" and "Fairest Lord Jesus."

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Shafer, Brett W -

Services for Brett W. Schafer, 13, Prescott, were held Friday at United Disciples of Christ Church in Prescott. The Rev. Jeanne Groom officiated with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Prescott.

Brett died as the result of an accidental shooting.

Survivors include his parents Rick and Julie Schafer of Prescott; two sisters, Wendi and Allison of Prescott;

grandparents Bill and Wilma Schafer of Prescott and Lee and Gloria West of Weatherford, Texas, and Ron

and Marilyn DiBiase of Council Bluffs; and great grandparents Elmer and Marie West of Corning and Merna

Coleman of Greenfield.

Brett's eighth grade classmates were honorary pallbearers.

A memorial has been established in his name.

Smith, Alma Lucille Johnston Stuart Ahnen -

Services for Alma Smith were held December 1, 1997 at the Larkin Funeral Home in Creston with Dr. Robert

Pickerell of the First Christian Church officiating.

Music was provided by Lynn Baker as organist and Hannah Wilson, Deb Seitz, and Laura Hartman as vocalists.

Casket bearers were Tony Stuart, Mike Stuart, Billie Stuart, "Bud" Stuart, Monte Stuart, Joe Ahnen, Eric

Shepherd, Mark Shepherd, Dustin Ahnen, and Mannie Shepherd.

Alma Lucille Smith, daughter of Mannie and Dolly Straight Johnston was born in Gravity, Iowa on September

22, 1918 and entered into rest at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on November 27, 1997 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Alma spent her early years in the Gravity community where she attended school until moving with her family to

Lenox where she graduated. In April of 1934 she was united in marriage with Avery Stuart. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of three children: William, Janice, and Robert. Avery was killed while serving his country during World War II.

In 1946 she was united in marriage to Glen Ahnen. This marriage was blessed with the birth of one son, George.

In 1962 she was united in marriage with Orval J. Smith and they made their home in Creston. He preceded her in

death in 1988.

Alma was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship of the church. She was preceded in death by: her parents, husbands, two sons; Robert A. Stuart and George Ahnen, two brothers; Bernard and Kenneth Johnston.

She leaves to mourn her passing; her son, William A. Stuart and wife Dorothy of Creston; her daughter, Janice

Y. Shepherd of Creston, her foster daughter, Betty Westlake of Creston; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her two brothers; Kermit Johnston of Creston and Emerson "Sonny" Johnston of Lenox; her sister, Grace Weese of Creston and many other relatives and friends.

Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery in Creston.

Taylor, Leona Marie Hutchinson -

Leona Marie Hutchison, daughter of Otto and Nellie (James) Hutchison was born April 30, 1908 at Fort Morgan,

Colorado. She attended school at Centerville, graduated from Chariton High School in 1927, where her father taught Industrial Arts. She attended Junior College in Chariton for two years and later came to Diagonal where she taught Primary, First and Second grades in the school.

On February 22, 1933 she was united in marriage to Floyd Taylor in Grant City, Missouri. They lived on the Platte River bottom where Marilyn and Richard were born and moved to the Grace place on the High and Dry in 1941 where Judith was born.

Floyd and Leona made this their home for 21 years and moved to Diagonal in 1973.

Leona continued to make her home in Diagonal until September 1994 when she entered the Clearview Home

following a broken hip. Floyd and Leona celebrated 46 years of marriage.

Leona was a member of the United Church of Diagonal, active in the quilting club, a member of the Priscilla club and the neighborhood club. For many years she taught adult class at Sunday school.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Dave) McCalley of Cedar Falls, Judith (Claire) Newton and one son,

Richard (Janis) Taylor of Diagonal; grandchildren, Lisa McCalley of Lawrence, Kansas, Michael (JeanAnn) Taylor, Bill (Joni) Taylor of Creston, Todd (Jennifer) Taylor of Parkville, Missouri, Scott Taylor of Omaha, Nebraska, Jim (Patty) Newton, Steve (Terri) Newton of Diagonal and Doug Newton of Elk Horn, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Ryan and Blair Taylor, Colby Taylor and Danielle and Nolan Newton; a sister Lois (Stan) Schleuter of Temperance, Michigan. Also one brother-in-law and five sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and stepmother, Esther Hutchison.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 28,1997 at the United Church of Diagonal at Diagonal, Iowa with the Rev Michael Druhl officiating. Music was provided by Caryl Dukes and Barbara Gifford.

Casketbearers were Lisa Lange, Mike Taylor, Mark McCalley, Bill Taylor, Jim Newton, John McCalley, Ann

McCalley, Steve Newton, Scott Taylor, Todd Taylor, and Doug Newton.

Interment was at the Diagonal Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa.

Thompson, Elva Leoma Scott -

Elva Leoma Thompson was born July 22, 1910 in Bridgewater, Iowa, the daughter of Royal Davillo Scott and Sarah E. (Garner)

Scott.

Elva grew up in the Bridgewater area and attended school through the 8th grade. Most of her adult life was spent in the Corning area.

She was married on April 25, 1936, to Morris Grant Thompson in Belleville, Kansas. To their union was born a daughter Norma and a son Darwin.

Elva was a lifelong homemaker as well as a devoted wife, mother and friend.

In 1984, she moved from Corning to Creston. She resided there until 1991 when she moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

Elva died October 26, 1997, at her home in Phoenix at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 4 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and eight brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law Norma and Gary Hill and a son Darwin Thompson, all of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister Elsie Cramer of Creston, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 28, 1997 at the Green Acres Chapel of Light in Phoenix, Arizona, with Pastor Dave Wettei officiating.

Local funeral services were held Saturday, November 1, 1997 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Gordon Elrick of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Corning.

Serving as pallbearers were Gary Hill, Greg Hill, Adam Hill, Edwin Hill, Brandon Hill and Darwin Thompson.

A Memorial Fund has been established in Elva's name.

Coen-Beaty Funeral Home of Creston was in charge of funeral arrangements.
