Armstrong, Mabel Elizabeth
Ferguson -
Mabel
Elizabeth Armstrong, the seventh child of George and Janet Frew Ferguson, Sr., was born July 23, 1902 on a farm
near
Lenox, in Taylor county, Iowa. She died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa
on Monday, June 20, 1983 at the
age
of eighty years, ten months and twenty-seven days.
Mabel
became a member of the Lenox Presbyterian Church at an early age, later
transferring her membership to the
United
Presbyterian Church where she was an active member until her health
failed. She grew up on the farm where
she
was
born and attended rural school for eight years. Mabel was a graduate of Lenox
High School and attended college at
Cedar
Falls. She taught school in Iowa for many years until taking employment as a
saleswoman of health and accident
insurance
for two years.
On
December 15, 1946, she was united in marriage with Harold J. Armstrong in
Kansas City, Missouri. Since her
husband
was in construction work, they lived in many states, choosing Minnesota for
their retirement because of the
summer
climate and their love of trees.
Following
Harold's death in August of 1975, Mabel moved to the Sunrise Apartments in
Lenox to be near her family.
Others
preceding her in death besides her husband were her parents, three brothers,
Hamilton, George and Tom Ferguson;
three
sisters, Mary Tuttle, Stella Stoner and Margaret Duncan; and a granddaughter, Cindi Ann Cloud.
Survivors
include a stepdaughter, Betty Hareton of Las Vegas,
Nevada; a sister, Flora Arnold of Des Moines; three
sisters-in-law,
Stella, Vera and Mary Ferguson, all of Lenox; as well as nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Services
were held Thursday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in
Lenox with Reverend Don
Fisher,
pastor of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church officiating.
Music
was by Roberta Lockhart. organist, and Gwen Maynes,
soloist. The selections were "In The Garden" and
"Peace
In The Valley".
Casket
bearers were George Sweeney, Roland Boltinghouse,
Dick Ferguson, Paul Brokaw, Leo Evans, and Tom Brokaw.
Honorary
bearers were Harry Drorbaugh, Bill Eberle, Ivan Bennett, Don Saunders, Harvey Wurster, James Wurster, Jerry
Wurstcr,
and Marvin Wilson.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Nina
Virginia Reed Baker, the daughter of William 0. and Erma Reed, was born
September 7, 1927 near Lenox, Iowa.
She
died Sunday, June 19, 1983 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at
the age of fifty-five years, eight
months
and twelve days.
Nina
attended country school and Lenox High School, graduating from there in 1945.
On
January 28, 1946, she was united in marriage with Ernest Earl Baker of Afton,
Iowa.
Mrs.
Baker was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clearfield and a member of
the WSCS as long as her health
permitted.
Nina
was a friend to all and enjoyed her role as a homemaker.
Her
children and grandchildren were her proudest accomplishments.
Preceding
her in death were her parents and a brother, Orville of Leon, Iowa.
Survivors
include her husband, Earl of Clearfield; a daughter, Juanita Heimke and husband, Gary of Clearfield;
two
sons, Galen and wife, Cindy and Marvin and wife, Karen, all of Clearfield; four
grandchildren, Mark Heimke, Gabriel
and
Gretchen Baker and Rocky Baker; three sisters, Eva Jones of Lenox, Lola Dillon
of Clearfield and Lometa Brammer
of
Sharpsburg; four brothers, Charley of Des Moines, Donald of Alburnett,
Lewis, and Bill, both of Lenox; as well as other
relatives.
Services
were held Wednesday, June 22, 1983 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in
Clearfield, Reverend Jim
Turner
and Reverend Roger Graf officiated.
Music
was by Roberta Lockhart, organist and Forrest and Margaret Whipp.
vocalists. The selections were "In The
Garden"
and "Beyond The Sunset".
Casket
bearers were Leo Evans, Wayne Beck, John Kitzman,
Elvin Miller, Fred Haynes and Delbert Routh.
Interment was in the Clearfield
Cemetery.

services for Mrs Sim Bryan
(Mary Ethel) Beemer, 82, Conway held May 16 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in
Bedford were officiated by Rev Carl Cummings and Rev Ted DeHass. Mrs Beemer died May
12, 1983 in Rosary Hospital, Corning, Interment was at the Conway Cemetery.
Mary
Ethel Beemer, daughter of Charles R Smith and Annie Laurie Hamblin Smith was
born at Sharpsburg, Iowa March 17, 1901. She lived around Conway and grew to maturity in Sharpsburg and Norwich,
Iowa, attending public school and the Presbyterian Church.
On
March 17, 1917, she was united in marriage to Sim Bryan Beemer at Creston, Iowa and they lived at rural Conway. To this union twelve children were born:
Beth, Betty, Joyce, Virgil, Dean, Bryce, Dale, Mary Lu, Alice Ann, Jerry, Sally
and Tim.
She
was a homemaker.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Phillip and Donald, her
sister, Nellie Rogers, her children, Beth in 1936 and Bryce in 1980, three
infant grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
Left
to cherish her memory are her husband, Sim Bryan
Beemer; her children and their spouses: Betty Boyer and her
husband,
Marvin, of Clearfield, Joyce Ridnour and her husband,
Ralph, of Walnut, Virgil and his wife, Vivian, of Conway, Dean and his, wife,
Betty Jean, of Cody, Wyoming, Beverly Beemer, daughter-in-law, Cody, Wyoming,
Dale and his wife, Zonette, of
Conway,
Mary Lu Schofield and her husband, Lloyd, Lenox, Alice Ann Miller and her
husband, Lyle, Grant City, Missouri, Jerry and his wife, Jean, of Conway, Sally
Hensley and her husband, Gary, Corning, Tim and his wife, Linda, Blair,
Nebraska, 33 grandchildren; 35 greatgrandchildren;
sister, Lulu Robinson, of Lenox; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her
family pays this tribute to her: "Our mother was devoted to her husband
and family and tirelessly and cheerfully
spent
her life administering to them lovingly. Her children were her pride and joy as
she listened for their laughter and watched for their happy greetings. Her
strong faith sustained her through her entire life and especially during the
last months of illness.

Effie Mary Cochran, the daughter of
Joseph and Eleanor Mary Turner Cochran was born in Taylor County, Iowa on
August 25, 1892. She died at the Lenox
Care Center in Lenox, Iowa on Saturday May 28, 1982 at the age of ninety years,
nine months and three days.
Effie
was raised on a farm in the Lenox area. On February 23, 1913, she was
united in marriage with Virble Dee Black at Lenox.
The couple farmed near Lenox with Effie's husband later becoming an automobile
salesman. His occupation took them to several communities in southwest and
central Iowa. At the time of Mr. Black's death, they owned a Chevrolet
dealership in Carson, Iowa.
Although
Effie had no children of her own, her love and care reached out to nieces and
nephews. Following the death of the mother of Travis Cochran, Effie became a
mother to him.
Effie
returned to Lenox in 1952 where she made a home for her aging parents, She
cared for them until they died at the
ages
of 92 and 94.
Effie
was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church. Her Christian faith found expression
in the love and concern she showed toward all who knew her.
Preceding
her in death were her husband in 1952, her parents, a sister, Ida Bennett; and
three brothers, Frank, William and Harry Cochran.
Survivors
include two sisters, Ruth Beemer of Lenox and Florence McKelvey of Monroe, Michigan; two brothers, John of
Council
Bluffs, Iowa and Glen of Salem, Oregon; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Tuesday, May 11 at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox.
Reverend Lester Hesseltine pastor, officiated,
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist and Marilyn Beck and
Billie Jean Barker, vocalists. The selections were "In The Garden"
and "God Will Take Care Of You".
Casket

was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Ruby Maxine, the daughter of Alvin
Irvin and Charlotte M Wheatley Gray was born March 18, 1921 on a farm south of
Lenox in Taylor County, Iowa. She died
at her home southwest of Lenox on Monday May 30, 1983 at the age of sixty two
years, two months and
twelve days.
Ruby
lived all her life in the Lenox community and graduated from Lenox High
School. On November 26, 1939 she was
united
in
marriage with Robert Callahan at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.
Preceding
her in death were her father, a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ann and
Charles Schmit and a granddaughter, Kathleen
Callahan.
Survivors
include her husband, Bob of Lenox; two daughters, Mary Pat Young and husband,
Dale of Madrid, Iowa and Stacy Brown of Lenox; two sons, Kevin Callahan and
wife, Karen of Linwood, Kansas and Robert A. Callahan; ten grandchildren; her
mother, Lottie
Gray
of Lenox; and a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Don) Drennan of
Corning, Iowa.
Services
were held Thursday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.
Father Mike Sims officiated.
Music
was by Diane Robinson, organist, and Florence Robinson, cantor.
Altar

Elma
Opal Clark , the daughter of Martha and Wilbur Groves, was born October 20,
1898 at Knowlton, Iowa. She
died
Friday, August 5, 1983 at the Lenox Care Center, Lenox, Iowa,
As a
young girl, Elma moved with her parents to Haxtun, Colorado where she grew to
maturity. She was baptized and
was
a member of the Christian Church in Sheridan, Missouri.
Elma
was united in marriage with John Clark October 1, 1922. They spent most of
their married life in and around the
Sheridan
area.
She was a loving and devoted wife and
mother and was always ready to give a helping hand to her many friends.
Preceding her in death were her
husband, a daughter, Minerva Osborn, one granddaughter, five brothers, and two
sisters.
Survivors include three daughters,
Donna Sharp of Oceanview, California, Carol May and
husband, John of Mt. Ayr, Iowa,
Virginia Weaver and husband Duane of
Sharpsburg, Iowa, a son-in-law, Vaneil Osborn of St.
Joseph, Missouri, fourteen
grandchildren, thirty-three great
grandchildren, three sisters, Bertha Chermany of Paxton,
Colorado, Nellie Lambert and
husband Leslie or Hereford, Colorado
and Maxine Sweetman of Greeley, Colorado as well as
other relatives.
Services were held Tuesday August 9 at
the Sheridan Christian Church at 2 p.m. with Reverend Howard McPeak officiating.
Casket bearers were Larry Weaver, Terry
Weaver, Dale Weaver, Richard Weaver, Delvin Weaver,
Art Osborn, Phil Campbell
and Dennis Huntsman.
Interment was in Luteston Cemetery near Sheridan.

Services
for James Douglas Eberle, 30, of Farnhamville,
Iowa were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. May 24 at the Carson
Funeral
Home in Dayton, Iowa. Mr. Eberle was killed in a
one-car accident west of Gowrie on Friday, May 20.
Interment
was in the Dayton Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by the
Lehigh Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors
include his wife, Lois; his mother, Muriel Eberle of
Atlantic; his father, Dale Eberle of Jewell; three
brothers,
Steven Eberle, serving with the United States Navy aboard
the USS Blue Ridge out of Yokohama, Japan, Michael
Eberle of Lehigh, and Alex Eberle of Jewell; and his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Eberle of Bedford.
James
was born in Creston, Iowa. He graduated from Audubon High School and served in
the United States Navy.
He
was united in marriage with Lois Ekstrom six years
ago. They made their home in Dayton, recently moving to
Farnhamville.
Mr. Eberle had previously been employed at
Quad-States Construction Company in Ft. Dodge.

A
one-car accident claimed the life of Rodney Alan Emig,
21, of Lenox when the car he was driving left the roadway on
Shoenhair Street in Lenox and struck a utility pole. Emig was
pronounced dead at the scene of head injuries. A
passenger
in the Emig auto, David Long, 17, of Lenox, was taken
to Rosary Hospital in Corning with head, neck and
back
injuries.
The
accident occurred at 11:40 p.m. on Shoenhair Street,
a gravel street south of Michigan Street. The 1970 Mercury
driven
by Emig was considered a total loss.
The
vehicle was northbound on Shoenhair Street when it
left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The driver was thrown
from
the vehicle. Responding to the scene of the accident were the Lenox Police
Department, the Taylor County Sheriffs
Department,
and Trooper Kenny Brown of Corning, Iowa State Highway Patrol.

Rodney
Alan Emig, the son of Gerald and Darlene Emig, was born June 30,
1961. He died Monday, June 20, 1983 at
Lenox,
Iowa.

February 14, 1980, he was united in marriage with Lynn Marie Kohl.
Rodney
was preceded in death by his father, Gerald; a brother, Jerry; and a
sister-in-law, Lynn.
Survivors

Foes was employed as a sales clerk at Park Avenue Shoe and Clothing. She was a
member of the Ft. Des Moines
United
Methodist Church and Southgate Order of the Eastern Star.

Des Moines, and Donna Jean

James Grey, the son of George W. and Margarite Grey,
was born on a farm southeast of Lenox, Iowa on December 18,
1892.
He died at the Lenox Care Center Monday, June 20, 1983 at the age of ninety
years, six months and two days.
On
January 26, 1912, he was united in marriage with Zella R. Bowdre.
Harry
was baptized at the Lenox First Christian Church in 1915. He was a farmer until
moving to Santa Ana. California
in
1935, and then returned to Lenox in 1973.
Preceding
him in death were his parents; his wife, Zella on
August 3, 1975; a brother and two sisters.
Survivors
include his son, George B. Grey and wife, Edna of Lenox; a granddaughter,
Georgia Morey and husband,
Ed
of Harlan, Iowa; two greatgrandchildren; two nephews
and two nieces.
Services
were held Thursday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at the Larkin- Bender Funeral Home in
Lenox. Pastor Jack Cutbirth
of
the Lenox First Christian Church officiated.
The
organist was Harley Allen Porter. "In The Garden" was the special
selection.

bearers were Sam Haering, Bob Manroe,
Ernie Hufnagel, Kenneth Black, Leland Hegwood, and Barney Miller.

Lester Leroy Hegwood,
son of Allie and Josephine Gordon Hegwood, was born
on the family farm southwest of Lenox, Iowa on August 29, 1910. He died suddenly at his apartment in Omaha, Nebraska
Thursday, May 26, 1983 at the age of seventy-two years, eight months and
twenty-seven days.
Mr Hegwood served for a short time with the Cavalry
Division of the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, receiving an
honorable discharge in 1942.
He was
united in marriage with Helen Stepp of St. Joseph,
Missouri in 1942. They made their home in Kansas City, Kansas for thirty-five
years.
Lester
was appointed City Electrical Inspector in Kansas City in 1962. He was a member of the Central Christian Church.
Preceding
him in death were his wife, Helen; his parents; and a sister, Irma Wilcox.
Survivors
include a sister, Erla Barker and husband, Jesse and
a brother, Leland Allie Hegwood and wife, Dorothy,
all
of
Lenox; three nieces, three nephews, three cousins, as well as many great nieces
and great nephews.
Services
were held at the Larkin Funeral Home in Omaha at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May
28. Masonic services were also
conducted.
Interment
was in the High Creek Cemetery near Watson, Missouri.

Wednesday June 8, 1983
Samuel
Ellis Houchin, son of James W. and Mary Ellen Ellis Houchin, was born December 7, 1896 near Clarinda, Iowa. He
died
June 13 at the age of 86 years, six months and six days. He resided at the
Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, California.
Mr. Houchin worked several years at the elevator in Kent, Iowa,
then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he became a
metal
lathe operator and builder.
He
was married October 16, 1936 to Mildred Mann in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two children
were born to this union, James
C.
and Glendora.
He
is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, James and wife, Veronica; daughter,
Glendora Greenway and husband, Jerry;
four
granddaughters and one grandson; three brothers, Ernest of Petaluma, Russel of Midway City and Frank of Long
Beach,
California; five sisters, Jane Doggett of Mound, Oklahoma, Dora Reichardt of Midway City, California, Rena
Webb
of Bedford, Helen Travis of Corning, and Agnes Porter of Lenox.
He
was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Flossie and Hester Day.
Mr. Houchin was a charter member of the Lenox, Iowa American
Legion post which he joined in 1919. He remained a
Legionnaire
for sixty-four years. He also was a member of the 40 & 8 for twenty-five
years. He was recently honored by
having
the new Legion Building in Midway City named Houchin Hall. He was also honored for the 16,000 plus hours of
volunteer
service at the Veterans Hospital.
The
flag which draped his burial casket was the same flag which had covered the
casket of his Civil War veteran grandfather,
Samuel
Ellis, for whom he was named.
Funeral
services were held June 17 in the Westminster Memorial Park Chapel with Pastor
Lowell Magsig officiating.
Burial
was in Westminster Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites.

Graveside services for Russell D Key of
Lincoln, Nebraska were held at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox on Sunday,
July 11 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lester Hesseltine, pastor of the United Methodist Church,
officiated.
Mr Key, 83, died Thursday July 28 at a nursing home following a lengthy
illness. He was a former resident of Lenox.
Survivors include his wife, Marion of
Lincoln, a son, James, also of Lincoln, a daughter, Patricia of Los Angeles,
California, a brother, Roy Key of Creston, aunts, Mary Terry, Lydia Reynolds
and Eunice Eller, all of Lenox and Hattie Fuller of Clarinda and an Uncle,
Lloyd Key of Blockton.
Memorial services were held Saturday
July 30 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Methodist Church, 1144 M Street, Lincoln,
Reverend Dan Gragler officiated.

Ralph
H. McClintock, the son Thomas H. and Laura Madden McClintock, was born in Fort
Dodge, Iowa June 18,
1900,
He died at Cherokee Village, Arkansas July 31, 1983.
He
was a chiropractor and continued to practice his profession until the time of
his death.
Mr.
McClintock attended school in Lenox, graduating from Lenox High School. He
became a member of Tremont Lodge
#343 A.F.&A.M. on April 13, 1922 and was
honored with a certificate from the local lodge when he became a
fifty
year Mason.
Preceding
him in death were his wife, Glenna on April 10, 1975 and a son, Robert, in
childhood.
Survivors
include two sons, William of Seminole, Florida and John of Schnohomish,
Washington; a daughter, Sheryl
Jorgensen
of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Arnold
Walter of Quincy, Illinois and Harlan
Walter
of Wickenburg, Arizona; and other relatives, Mary Jo Hall of Spirit Lake, Iowa,
Richard Waller and Julian Waller,
both
of Lenox.
Services
were held at the First Methodist Church in Cherokee Village with Reverend Jeff
Bruner officiating.
Interment
was in the Oak Lawn Cemetery at Highland, Arkansas.
Lenox

Daniel Francis Thomas, the son of Edward A. and
Helen Holmes Thomas was born July 19, 1919 at the family home in
Taylor County, Iowa near Corning. He died Monday May 16 at the Rosary Hospital
in Corning, following a sudden heart attack.
He was forty-three years, nine months and
twenty-seven days of age.
Dan grew up in the Fairview Community and graduated
from Corning High School in 1957.
On September 23, 1963, he was united in marriage
with Cathryn Dene Pepper of
Lenox. The couple moved to the family
farm in the Corning area that had been the home of
Dan's grandparents and parents and still resided there at the time
of his death.
Mr Thomas was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Corning and
a member of the National Guard
from 1959 to 1964. He enjoyed farming, carpentry and the many activities of his children.
He was a friend to all and always ready to lend a
helping hand. To his niece and nephews
he was a dedicated Uncle Dan.
Preceding him in death were his father, two infant
sisters and his father-in-law, Howard Pepper.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy, his daughter,
Brenda Jean, his son, Brian Daniel, his mother, Helen Thomas, a sister Jane
Seaton and husband, Dan, a sister-in-law Jean Croy and husband, Mike, his mother-in-law, Crissie Riegel and husband,
John a niece Tricia Seaton; three nephews, Scott
Seaton and Jeff and John Croy, as well as other
relatives.
Services were held at the United
Methodist Church in Corning on Wednesday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverends
Clarence and
Zona Lautt officiating.
Music was provided by Judy Townsend,
organist and Kathy Schafer, vocalist. Flower bearers were Eileen McMullen and
Betty Hefflefinger.
Casket bearers were Ted Russell, Arnold
Leonard, Merle Sunthen, Don Hefflefiner,
Milan McMullen and Gary Hensley.
Honorary bearers were John Keefe and
Harold Leonard.
Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery
at Corning.
