Anderson, Lyman E -

Lyman E. Anderson, age 71 of 8219 North 115th Avenue East, Laurel, Iowa died December 23, 1997 at

Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center, Marshalltown, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 29, 1997 at Laurel United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Alan

Rusk officiating. Burial was at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Haverhill, Iowa. A memorial fund has been

established in his name.

He was born September 26, 1926 at Nehawka, Nebraska, the son of E. Daniel and Elsa Ahrens Anderson. He was raised

and educated in Nehawka, Nebraska and was married to Jean Anne Sand on February 8, 1949 at Nebraska City,

Nebraska.

They lived in Nehawka until 1956 when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona and later to Fort Dodge, Iowa where he was

employed as a sales representative for the Hamilton Company. In 1979 the family moved to the Marshalltown

area, where he was employed as a sales representative for Nachurs Plant Food Company, covering the southwest territory

of Iowa. He retired in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Anderson of Laurel; four sons: Gregory Anderson of Poquoson, Virginia; Kipp Anderson of

Olathe, Kansas; Brian Anderson of Marshalltown and Norman Anderson of Laurel, three daughters: Mrs. Richard (Sonia) Cepel of

Kearney, Nebraska; Marcia Bradley of Ames and Mrs. Alan (Dorene) Rusk of Clearfield, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren,

two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two sisters: Mrs. Marie Doedyns of San Juan, Texas and Mrs. Doris Doedyns of Bishop, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clinton Anderson.

Badgett, Geraldine Zona Evans Hebert -

Geraldine Zona Badgett was born April 3, 1913 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Lovejoy and Emma Marsden (Tindle)

Evans. She was one of seven children. Her first years were spent in the Council Bluffs area, then she moved to the Corning area where she graduated from Corning High School.

At the age of twenty, she moved to California where she attended college for a couple of years. In 1938, she married Richard Cole Hebert in Pasadena, California. To their union was born a daughter Gerry and a son Hal.

Geraldine continued to live in California. She worked for the McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing as a supervisor in the shipping

department. Following her retirement in 1979, she returned to Iowa.

On October 22, 1980, she married Max Richard Badgett in Arkansas. They made their home in rural Lenox, but they enjoyed wintering in Florida. At their winter home in Florida, she was an officer of the Haines City Mobile Home Park Association. There she played an active role in organizing activities and was in charge of producing and distributing the monthly newsletter.

She died January 6, 1998 at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 84 years, 9 months, 3 days.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Richard Cole Hebert, brothers: Ronald, Donald and Clifford Evans; and a sister Retta Lou Hangs.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Max of Lenox, her daughter and son-in-law Gerry and Robert Coleman of Kansas City, MO;

her son and daughter-in-law Hal and Carol Hebert of Denver, Colorado; a brother and sister-in-law Everett and Sue Evans of Pasadena, CA; a sister Bernice Hebert of Whitefish, Montana; four grandchildren: Michelle Wilkens, Christopher Crissler, Beau Hebert, and Katrina Prater, one great-grandchild, Tessera Wilkens; several nieces and nephews; and many friends in our surrounding area as well

as in Florida who will always remember her.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 9, 1998, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery in rural Kent.

Those serving as pallbearers were Christopher Crissler, Jerald Prater, and friends of Geraldine. Roberta Lockhart as organist played

"How Great Thou Art , and accompanied the congregation as they sang, "Amazing Grace."

Memorials may be directed to the Lenox United Presbyterian Church.

Campbell, Haldene Thomas -

Haldene Thomas Campbell was born April 29, 1934 in Adams County, Iowa one of four children of Willard C. and

Corene Margaret (Hiley) Campbell. He graduated from Lenox High School in the class of 1952.

Haldene then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. Most of his time was spent stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador.

After receiving an early Honorable Discharge to return home to help with the family farm following his father's

accident, he assisted in the operation of the farm. He then lived and worked in Des Moines for a year before

beginning a career of cross country truck driving with Morgan Manufacturing and Skyline Mobile Homes.

In 1964, he purchased the family farm. He farmed as well as continued to drive trucks, most recently with Advanced

Drainage Systems until retiring after fourteen years of service. He received numerous awards and recognition for

safe driving throughout those years.

On March 16, 1975, Haldene married Ola Taylor in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, American legion Parkinson Post #250 in Lenox and Theodore

J. Martens V.F.W. Post in Creston.

Haldene died December 30, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 63 years, 8 months, 1 day.

He was preceded in death by his father Willard C. Campbell in May of 1996.

Those who will cherish his memory are his wife Ola Campbell of Lenox; children: Debra Jameson and husband

Richard of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Edward Lowery and his wife Nancy of Edmond, Oklahoma; his mother Corene

Campbell of Lenox; a brother Bill D. Campbell and wife Jeanette of Indianola, Iowa; sisters Carol Campbell of Des

Moines, Iowa and Sharon Clearman and husband Phil of Des Moines, Iowa; as well as three grandchildren; other

relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church with

Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating.

Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Those serving as pallbearers included, Richard Slight, Rick Uttcrback, Dan Zahn, Dave Zahn, Larry Campbell

and Jerry Campbell. Honorary Pallbearers were Harvey Wurster, Jim Boltinghouse, Paul Chandler, Jim Hewitt,

Marvin Reed, Steve Marxcn, Robert Rhoades, Fred Hayncs, Richard Notz, Howard Stoaks, Harold Taylor, Gene

Marshall, and Richard Jameson.

Paula Sink as organist provided accompaniment as Carol Campbell and Sharon Clearman sang "Amazing Grace" and

"Wind Beneath My wings". A recorded selection of "I Will Always Love You" was rendered.

Memorials are suggested to the Lenox Christian Church.

Chaney, Robert Eugene -

Robert Eugene Chancy was born June 23, 1912, in Blockton, Iowa, to Charles Edwin Chaney and Minnie May (Richards) Chancy. They

lived a short time in Blockton before moving to Sharpsburg, and then to Clearfield when he was around 6 years old.

Robert was the youngest of five children with two brothers and two sisters making up the rest of the family. His youth was spent in

Clearfield passing the days in mischief, fun and work.

On August 13, 1938, he married Irvel Bennett in Greenfield, Iowa. Their first daughter, Ida Patricia, was born in Clearfield where

Robert operated a blacksmith shop. Their second daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was born while the family lived in Lenox.

Within a year, the four moved to Des Moines where Robert was a machinist for Frye Manufacturing.

On June 30, 1977 Robert and Irvel looked forward to spending each Spring, Summer and Fall on the family farm. They were thankful for all of God's creation that touched their lives there.

Robert passed away December 15, 1997, at the Lenox Care Center, at the age of 85 years, 5 months, 22 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Alice Hargin and two brothers: Walter and Herman Chaney.

He is survived by his wife Irvel Chancy of Des Moines, a sister Hazel Hargin of Lenox,daughters; Ida Patricia

Jorgenson of Sioux City, Iowa and Elizabeth Ann Sunderlin  of Goodyear, Arizona, a granddaughter Pam and two

great-granddaughters: Trisha and Alexis.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 18, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church with Pastor

Audrey Westendorf officiating. Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, visitation was held Wednesday at

Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Those serving as pallbearers were Leo Burg, Jeff Notz, Richard Notz, Steve Hamilton, Marion Hargin and

Charles Bowman. Kathryn Wilson provided organ accompaniment as Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck sang.

Memorials may directed to the Lenox Methodist Church, the Lenox Care Center or the Immanuel United Methodist

Church in Des Moines.

Duey, Helen Lou Horton -

Helen Lou Duey, daughter of Clyde and Mabel Moore Horton was born on a farm southwest of Clearfield, Iowa on

January 15, 1918 and departed this life December 28, 1997 at her home in Clearfield.

On February 16, 1937 she was united in marriage to John Everett Duey and to this union three children were born-Jim

Duey, Judy Branham and Brenda Spurrier.

Helen Lou was a member of the Methodist Church in Clearfield and Eastern Star. She loved to play cards and was a

member of Entrenous, Duplicate, Merry Matrons bridge clubs and Rook club.

Helen Lou and Johnny traveled and spent many winters in Arizona. They never missed a State Fair for 50 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband John, daughters Judy and husband Wayne Branham of Sheridan, Missouri;

Brenda and husband Dean Spurrier of Clearfield and daughter-in-law Ramona Duey of Folsom, California; 8 grandchildren

Mark Hargin of Bedford, IA; Mitch Hargin of Clarinda, IA; Lisa Bergan of Superior, CO; Linda Bartlett of Roseville, CA;

Craig Duey of Placerville, CA; Scott Spurrier and Angela Rugolo, both of Chandler, AZ; and Brent Spurrier of Princeton,

MO; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabel and husband Raymond Trost of Lenox, IA; and sisters-in-law Mollie Johnston

of Afton and Marianna Duey of Waverly, IA; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Jim, two brothers Bill and Pete Horton and an infant sister.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield,

Iowa with Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Patty Parrish and Kathy Nelson.

Casketbearers were Gaylan Bell, Jerry Horton, Mitch Hargin, Todd Morris, Brent Spurrier, Craig Duey, Scott

Spurrier, and Mark Hargin.

Honorary pallbearers were Darl Bell, James Darst, Paul Brown, and Jerry Ewalt.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.

Gaule, Eula Jean Nevill -

Eula Jean Gaule died December 9, 1997 at the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center in Creston, Iowa at the

age of 73 years, 9 months, and 18 days.

Mrs. Gaule was born on February 21, 1924 in Ringgold County Iowa to Roth B. and Ester Ruth Cole Nevill. Eula

Jean was the oldest of three girls.

She attended Clearfield Independent school and graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1941. After

graduation she worked as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools in Clearfield, then taught rural school one year in

Ringgold County in 1942.

She then moved to Des Moines working as stenographer at the State Department of Social Welfare while  attending Capita! City Commercial College.

On February 18, 1944 she married Marvin A. Gaule at the Clearfield Methodist Church. To this union were born

two daughters, Patsy Luella on 6-18-45 and Betty Suzanne on 8-13-46. A son, Curtis Dean arrived on 1-25-49. Eula Jean was an at-home mom while raising their family.

She was active in United Methodist Women, Sunday school, church, school and community activities.

In the mid 60's they purchased the two story home belonging to Marvin's parents.

She was employed at Creston Manufacturing Company, stenographer for the Union County Attorney, and then six

years as Deputy in the Union County Auditor's office.

Five years before Marvin's death she began commuting to Mt. Ayr working first as a production worker then in the

office of Mt. Ayr Manufacturing Company. The factory closed and she began night classes in business machines, accounting and computer programming.

With a move to, Creston, she briefly prepared salads and desserts in the cafeteria at Southwestern Community

College. Her final employment began in 1984 at age 65 working part-time at Job Service of Iowa in Creston.

Due to poor health she retired in 1993 and remained active in the Methodist Church and with the Union County

Senior Citizens. She participated weekly in the spelling at the Creston Mealsite and represented Area 14 four years in a row at the Iowa State Fair. At age 69 Eula took first place the Older Iowans Spelldown, of which she was very proud.

Survivors include two daughters, Patsy L. Beadel (significant other Robert L. Arnold) of Shannon City, Iowa; and Betty S. Gaule (significant other Diana Davis) of Hesperia, California; a son, Curtis D. (wife Sharon) Gaule of Erie, Colorado; two sisters, Verla Dean Main of Amarillo, Texas; and Rosalie M. (husband James) Hamilton of Creston, Iowa; three granddaughters, Gina

(husband Brian) Tener, Shilah Gaule and Heather Brown; three grandsons, Rob Beadel, Shane Gaule and Marvin Gaule.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in June 1978; son-in-law, Bill D. Beadel; an infant granddaughter,

Cassandra; and brother-in-law, Houston Main.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 13, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa with

the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.

Music was provided by Maralene Longfellow and Carol Kinder.

Casketbearers were Rob Beadel, Brian Tener, Steve Hamilton, Buckie Stanley, John Mays, Skip Main. Honorary pallbearers were

Marsha Wilson, Dan Pine, Tony Double, and Jean Richardson.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa. Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home

was in charge of the arrangements.

Harris, William Houston Jr. -

Funeral services were held for Dr. William Houston Harris, Jr. on Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at the Bedford United Methodist

Church under the supervision of the Novinger Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Interment was at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa.

William (Will) Houston Harris, Jr., son of William Harris, Sr. and Floy Mabel (Howell) Harris, was born at Tyler, Texas on March 6, 1924.

He grew up in Tyler, Texas attending the local school and the Methodist Church. After High school he attended the Tyler Junior College and Texas A&M University. Will also served from 1944-1946 in the United States Air Force. In 1950 he graduated from the Southern College of Optometry where he met his future wife. On October 21, 1950 he married Kathryn Lorraine "Katie" Gerdes at Memphis, Tennessee and they then lived in Beaumont, Texas later moving to Bedford, Iowa.

Will and Katie have four children: William Dennis Harris, Ben Daniel Harris, Valery Lynn Norton and Alan Dean Harris. Known to many

people and friends as "Doc , Will worked as an optometrist until his retirement.

Will died on January 11, 1998 at the Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by both his parents, William, Sr. and Floy Harris of Tyler, Texas and one son, B. Daniel Harris of Creston, Iowa.

Will is survived by his wife Katie of Bedford, Iowa; two sons, William Dennis and Cindy Harris of Kansas City, Missouri; and Alan Dean and Jackie Harris of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Valery Lynn Norton of Bedford, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Harris of

Creston, Iowa; Ten grandchildren, Geoffrey and Sean of Kansas City, MO, Sara, Jennifer, William and Jesse Harris of Creston, IA,

Jaylene and Lefty Davis of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Ben, J.J. and Kristen of Omaha, NE; two sisters, Mildred Harris and Leta Harris of Tyler, Texas; two brothers, Jack Harris and Charles Harris both of Tyler, Texas.

Will was a member of the Bedford Lions Club, Taylor Lodge of A.F. & A.M. #156, Shriners, Bedford Industrial Development Board, Bedford City Council, the Sports Booster Club, the Bedford Country Club, and a veteran of the U S Air Force.

Keller, Gertrude Eulene Roberts -

Gertrude Eulene Roberts was born April 20, 1917 in Columbia, South Carolina to Troy Carl Roberts and Leona Ferrill Roberts.

The oldest of three children, Troy Carl and Matthew Simieon.

At the age of 8 they returned to Weston, Missouri after the death of their father. Gertrude attended school there

and college at Northwest Missouri State at Maryville as a bookkeeper.

Her first job was with the REA Electric Cooperative in Platte City, Missouri. On December 6, 1941 she met Ralph Eugene

Keller and they were married July 18, 1942. Three children were born to this union, Virginia Louise Keller Moore, Roberta

Leona Keller and Carl Benjamin Keller.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers.

Survivors include Ralph, her husband of 55 years and her three children, son-in-law Chester Moore and daughter-in-law

Cheryl Hamilton Keller, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Over the years she helped start the public library in Platte City, Mo. She was active in the Methodist Circle in Clearfield.

She held offices in the American Legion Auxiliary, Iowa Blacksmith Association Auxiliary and was woman of the year for

the National Blacksmith Association. She organized and started a girl scout troop in Clearfield and with all of this

she raised three children and worked side by side with Ralph in his welding and blacksmith shop as a bookkeeper and small

engine repair person.

In the recent past she has been involved with Ralph in Early American craft fairs and traveling to them and also to

their 3rd Staff Squadron reunions (war buddies) every year.

After the loss of her leg in 1993, she and Ralph went to reside with Roberta in Council Bluffs, Iowa Gertrude died on

January 2, 1998 at Indian Hills Nursing Home in Council Bluffs.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield,

Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Earl Gaule and Mrs Danny Kinder.

Casketbearers were Mark Keller, Scott Stogdill, Michael Keller, and Randy Mitchell.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.

Longfellow, Ivan Lee -

Ivan Lee Longfellow was born on August 2, 1920 in Taylor County, Iowa to Henry and Alta Nash Longfellow. He completed grade school in the country and moved to Bedford so he could attend high school. He graduated in 1937.

In 1939 Ivan married Thelma Joyce Polsely and moved to a farm southwest of Clearfield. A year later they moved to a farm east of

Clearfield.

To this union were born five children: Richard, Diana. Patricia, Connie (deceased) and Dixie.

Ivan helped his father dig water wells from 1934-1941. Ivan then purchased his own drilling rig and then went on to build a successful family corporation, where he spent the rest of his life involved in the family business.

Ivan was one of the founders and promoters of the Clearfield Lions Iowa State Fair Shuttle bus service developed in 1964. While

serving as President of the Clearfield Lions Club Ivan promoted and participated in the construction of the Lions Club building.

Ivan had also been a partner in an Oliver Implement dealership. He and Thelma built Clearfield's first and only laundromat. Thelma

passed away in 1968.

In 1969 Ivan married Marion Updike of Corning, Iowa. They lived on the farm until 1974 and then moved into Clearfield. They enjoyed

wintering in Texas. Marion died in 1993.

In 1995 Ivan became engaged to Arlene Hansell of Diagonal. She became his constant companion. They enjoyed winters in Texas and

traveling together.

Ivan passed away January 15 after a fun filled day with Arlene and friends at their winter home in Alamo, Texas.

Ivan was a member of the Clearfield Methodist Church, Clearfield Lions Club, Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors, Masonic Lodge

No. 458, Past President of the Iowa Water Well Association, and member of the Clearfield City Council.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alta Longfellow, brothers Carl and Wilson Longfellow, daughter Connie Longfellow,

wife Thelma Longfellow, and his second wife Marion Updike Longfellow, granddaughters Pamela Pantry and Monica Longfellow.

Left to cherish memory are his fiance Arlene Hansell and her family, Ivan's son Richard Longfellow and wife Maralene of Clearfield;

daughter Diana Pantry and husband, Bud of Lancaster, Missouri; daughter Pat Kemery and husband, Wayne of Blockton; daughter Dixie Larsen and husband, Kenny of Clearfield, stepdaughter, Sherry Rowbotham and husband, Carroll of South Lake, Texas.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, five step great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, a sister Mary Hunter of Overland Park, Kansas; a sister-in-law Delores Longfellow of Creston, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. John Parrish and Mrs. Kenny Nelson.

Casketbearers were Ed Nickell, Randy Hogue, James Butler, Grover Mains, Dick Stewart, Gordon Still, and Jack DeFreece. Honorary

pallbearers were all of Ivan's friends.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.

Novinger, Boyd George -

The final week of 1998 brought the most stunning news of the year for Taylor County when longtime Bedford businessman

Boyd Novinger was found dead in his home on Sunday afternoon.

Autopsy reports indicated that Novinger, 77, died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

Law enforcement officials working on the case, including agents from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation,

are releasing few details.

Novinger was a funeral director with Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. His daughter Christy and her

husband H. Keith Taylor were actively involved in operation of the funeral home, which was formerly known as Shum-

Novinger.

The family has announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party or parties

responsible for the death.

At press time, funeral arrangements were pending at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford.

Novinger, Boyd George -

Hundreds of friends, family and business associates attended Dec. 31 funeral services for Boyd Novinger of Bedford.

Novinger, a longtime Bedford businessman, Novinger was found dead in his home on Dec. 28. Autopsy reports

indicated that the 77-year-old man died of gunshot wounds to the chest.

Law enforcement officials are releasing virtually no details on the incident. A brief release last week from the Iowa

Department of Criminal Investigation indicated only the basic facts. This week the Taylor County Sheriff's

Department said only that the case is still under investigation.

Novinger was a funeral director with Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. His daughter Christy and her

husband H. Keith Taylor were actively involved in operation of the funeral home.

The family has announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party or

Funeral services for Boyd Novinger were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2 p.m. at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home

in Bedford. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name.

Boyd George Novinger, son of Fred Schultz Novinger and Sylvia Belle Bloom Novinger was born at New Market, Iowa

November 19, 1920.

He lived in New Market and grew to maturity in the New Market area where he attended the public school.

On March 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Wilma Doris Shum and they lived in San Diego, California.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947, serving aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu in the South Pacific, receiving the

Navy Unit Commendation Medal.

Following his military service, he and Wilma returned to Bedford where he joined her parents in the funeral business.

To this union, one child was born, Christy Lu Novinger Taylor. He served the community of Bedford as a funeral director

for 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one grandson, Benjamin Lee.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Christy and husband Keith of Bedford, grandchildren B.K., Mark, Sam,

Kevin, Debra, Rhonda, Tony and Chester; six great grandchildren; one aunt, Nora Bloom Morris of Bedford; brother

Gordon and wife Mary of San Bernardino, CA, sister, Shirley Mitchiner of San Bernardino, CA, four nephews

and numerous cousins.

He was a member of John F. Hardin Post 164, Bedford American Legion, Taylor Lodge #156 AF & AM, VFW Post

11443, Bedford United Methodist Church.

Rogers, Catherine Matilda Bicknell -

Catherine Matilda Rogers, daughter of W. Frank and Mary Elfina (Joneson) Bicknell, was born on June 8, 1905 in

Plcasanton, Kansas, and entered into rest December 28, 1997 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa, at the age of

92 years, six months and twenty days.

In 1913 her family moved to rural Taylor County, where Catherine attended school in the Sharpsburg area.

On November 27, 1925, Catherine was united in marriage to Harry H. Rogers at Bedford, Iowa. They moved to

Lenox, which remained their home throughout their married lives. Three children, Dorothy, Gene and Larry, were born to

bless this union.

After their daughter Dorothy was killed in a traffic accident in 1950, Catherine and Harry adopted and raised her

two sons, Jimmy and Bobby.

Catherine was a homemaker and loved to cook. She also enjoyed gardening. She was a member of the Christian Church. In earlier

years, she enjoyed being a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship and the Rebekah Lodge.

Catherine was preceded in death by her daughter Dorothy Deardorf, husband Harry in 1968, her parents, three sisters:

Bernice Bicknell, Dorrit Kirby, and Daisy Fickess, as well as two brothers: George and Tom Bicknell, and her daughter-in-law

Darlene Rogers.

Catherine is survived by her sons: Gene Rogers of Pella, IA, Larry Rogers and wife Patricia of Lenox, Iowa; Jimmy

Rogers of Pella, Iowa; and Bobby Rogers and wife Marje of Gurnee, Illinois; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; three sisters Frances Askins and husband Al of Kansas City, Missouri, Cora Reckart of Van Nuys,

California, and Mildred Daston of Yucca Valley, California; a brother Frank Bicknell of Yucca Valley, California, as

well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31, 1997 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Mark

Woldruff officiating. Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery.

Those serving as pallbearers were Jon Thomson, Dean Larimer, Glenn Norton, Richard Isman, Francis Fickess, and Gordon Bruington. Roberta Lockhart as organist provided the musical selections.

Memorials are suggested to the Lenox Christian Church.

Setzler, Lois Kay -

Lois K. Setzler was born December 5, 1924 at Clearfield, Iowa to John and Zeta Hidlay Kay. She passed away December

20, 1997 at Palmdale, California.

Lois attended school in Clearfield and graduated there in 1942. After graduation she joined her mother and sister in

Santa Ana, California where she was employed at the Naval Air Base. Lois married Eugene T. (Dick) Setzler in 1944. She

retired from Lockheed in Palmdale. She was looking forward to seeing her old friends again at their 60th reunion.

Left to mourn her passing are her mother, Zeta Chambers of Hemet, California, and children Richard of Hemet,

California, James of Palmdale, California, Janet (Tom) Backe, Lake Los Angeles, California, six grandchildren, three nephews

and families, a sister, Leah (Jesse) Dohm, of Hemet, California, stepbrother, Leon (Myrna) Chambers, Hampton,

Virginia and cousin Pearl Lee (Lyle) Shrimpton of Atlantic, Iowa.

Shelman, Clyde Nesbitt -

Clyde Nesbitt Shelman was born May 21, 1911 in Sheridan, Missouri, and passed away January 15, 1998 in Clearview Nursing Home at

Mt. Ayr, Iowa at the age of 86 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Christie Shelman, a son Harlan, two sisters Beulah Dill and Eva Brown, and a brother Arlie Shelman.

On March 31, 1931 he married Edna Ellison. They were blessed with two sons, Harlan and Leroy.

Clyde was engaged in farming and construction work. In 1966 both Clyde and Edna were employed at the Colorado Boys Ranch as

cottage parents. They took their work very seriously and were favorites among the boys and co-workers. They retired after working there eighteen years, and continued hearing from some of the boys they had cared for.

Later they moved hack to Lenox, Iowa. Clyde enjoyed visiting his children and  grandchildren, gardening, and was proud of his collection of carpenter tools.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, and active in the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Edna of Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, IA; his son Leroy of Independence, MO;

grandchildren, Vickie Nickers, Linda Pouge, Joe and Jim Shelman and Trudi Goddard, all of Portland, Oregon, Kevin Shelman of Mount Ayr, IA and Diana Stephens of Sheridan, Missouri; twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was very loved and will be missed by all.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 19, 1998 at the Christian Church, Sheridan Missouri under the direction of

Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Missouri. Rev. Jason Hawk officiated.

Interment was in the Isadora Cemetery, Grant City, Missouri.

Sparks, Nellie Barrans McGrath -

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 18, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating.

Casketbearers were Tony Hughes, David Hughes, Jerry Baker, Richard Notz, Mark Barrans and Chris Christcnsen.

Roberta Lockhart as organist played the organ as Wilma Hughes sang.

Nellie was the third child of William and Marge (Van Houten) Barrans. She had four brothers; William. Clifford, George and James. She was born April 4, 1900, at her parent's farm south of Lenox.

After graduating from high school in Lenox, Nellie attended Iowa State College and received a two year degree in Home Economics. While at Iowa State she met her husband, Charles Byron McGarth of Boone County, Iowa and they were married on June 22, 1927. They moved to the sand hills of Nebraska. Later the McGraths moved to Lincoln where their three children, Sarah Lois, William

Thomas and Charles Bruce were born.

Between 1942 and 1944 the family lived in Lenox. In 1944 they returned to Lincoln where they lived until Charles' retirement. In October of 1961 they moved to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Charles died there in February of 1962.

Five years later Nellie met and married Leslie Sparks a retired Christian minister. They lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico; Melbourne , Florida; Rockport, Texas and eventually returned to Las Cruces where Rev. Sparks died in 1973.

About 1980 Nellie returned to Lenox and lived in an apartment in the home of her brother George Barrans and his wife Edra. She moved

to the Clearview Home in Clearfield in August, 1988 and died there on January 14, 1998.

Nellie was a member of the Lenox Presbyterian Church and the Audubon Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Sarah and husband Jim Aiken of Laguan Niguel, CA; a son Tom and wife Sylvia of Nacogdoches, TX; a

son Bruce of Los Alamos, New Mexico; a grandson Charles McGrath of Nacogdoches, Tx; a brother James of Hilo, Hawaii. Other survivors include her cousin Edith Notz of Lenox, her niece Wilma Hughes of Bedford and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, three brothers; William, Clifford and George Barrans, her nephew Bill Barrans and her only

granddaughter, Sandy McGrath.

Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Memorials may be directed to the Lenox Presbyterian Church.

Walter, Dale G -

Dale G. Walter was born January 13, 1904 in rural Lenox, Iowa, one of four children of Henry O. and Jessie

L. (Wray) Walter. He attended country school and then began his lifelong vocation of farming.

On December 24, 1936, Dale was united in marriage to Margaret Ethel Tallmon in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To their

union was born a daughter Kathryn and a son Larry.

He spent all of his farming in Adams County until his retirement in 1977. He continued to live on the farm

until February of 1997 when he moved to Taylor Ridge Estates in Lenox. His family was his pride.

Dale died December 30, 1997 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 17 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margaret in 1991, son Larry in October of 1997, brothers:

Wray and Louie, a sister-in-law Florence and a brother-in-law John Hettinger.

Those left to survive him are a daughter Kathryn Mallard and her husband Michael England of Tabor, and

daughter-in-law Sharon Walter of Prescott, Iowa, five grandchildren: Robert Walter and wife Laurie, Anita Mittag

and husband Craig, Estee Walter, Dale Knoop and wife Jackie and Jane Rose: three great-grandchildren: Tucker and

Tessa Mittag and Tommy Walter, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stringtown Church with Rev. Don Briley

officiating. Burial was in the Salem Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Serving as pallbearers were Alan Gates, Dale Knoop, Craig Mittag, Wayne Wilson, Robert Walter, and Roger Tallmon.

Nancy Gates provided piano music.

A memorial has been established in Dale's name.
