Amrine, Frances Stanley - Frances Amrine of Mount Ayr, formerly of Blockton passed away March 5, 2000 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr at the age of 83. Mrs. Amrine, the daughter of Arthur Oliver and Edna (Irvin) Stanley was born August 5, 1916 in Sheridan, Missouri. She graduated from Blockton High School in 1935. She was united in marriage to Stephen L. Amrine in Fillmore, MO on April 16, 1927. She operated Frances Beauty Shop in Blockton for 50 years, retiring in 1994. She lived in Blockton before moving to Mount Ayr five years ago. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr and L.A.L. Bridge Club in Blockton. She is survived by a son, Stanley (wife Lynette) Amrine of Dallas Center; a brother, Arthur Irvin Stanley of Columbia, Mo., and two grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband. Services were held March 9 at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with the Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Blockton. William "Bill" Clayton was born on November 3, 1931 at Clearfield. Iowa and departed this life on February 24, 2000 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. Iowa. He was the son of Earl and Mary (Wise) Clayton. He attended Ringgold County country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1950. He married Norma Jean Black on September 27, 1951. To this union three children were born: Karen, Connie and Howard. He was a farmer, worked for a telephone construction company and owned and operated his own ditch digging business until his retirement. He was also a school bus driver for 12 years. He enjoyed going to the coffee shops, country music shows and visiting with his many friends. Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Norma, of Clearfield; two daughters Karen Sutton and husband Jim of Shenandoah, Iowa and Connie Anderson and husband Tom of Owensboro, Kentucky; one son Howard Clayton and wife Carolyn of Milliard, Ohio; one brother Bev Clayton and wife Margarete of Bella Vista, Arkansas, eight grandchildren, three step grand children, six great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim. Services were held on Monday, February 28, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by Jim George and Marvel Melvin performing "Great Speckled Bird" and "I Saw a Man". Casket bearers were Dwayne Wahl, Harold Parker, Dale Campbell, Richard Longfellow, Laverne Adkisson, and Donald Minnick. Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa. Elberta R. Cross of Mount Ayr passed away February 26, 2000 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. She was 87. Mrs. Cross, the daughter of Walter A. and Carrie M. (Slattery) McKinstry, was born December 9, 1912 in Clearfield. She graduated from Clearfield High School in 1931 and attended State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was united in marriage to Ames R. Cross in Clearfield on October 25, 1937. They owned and operated Ames Cross, Inc. car and truck dealership in Mount Ayr, retiring in 1982. She lived in Clearfield and Benton before moving to Mount Ayr in 1937. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Modern Mothers, Women's Achievement Club, Business and Professional Women's Club and served as president of Heritage Park resident organizations. She is survived by three sons, Ron Cross and Alvin Cross of Urbandale and Mac (wife Pam) Cross of Mount Ayr; a brother, James "Mac" (wife Blanche) McKinstry of Marshalltown; two brothers-in-law Gene (wife Martha) Cross of Kansas City, MO and LeRoy Schlapia of Creston; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband. Services were held March 1 at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr with the Rev. John Brillo officiating. Ray W. Falconer, 86, of Afton, Iowa died at his home March 17, 2000. Services were held March 21, 2000 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Lou Parks officiating. Music was provided by Lynn Baker, organist and Laura Hartman, soloist. Casket bearers were Tom Bowers, Joe Bowers, Tom Rundlett, Tim Rundlett, Rich Rundlett, Randy Hardisty, Terry Hardisty and Dave Bowers. Honorary bearers were Andy Butler, Bob Butler, Michael Knorr, Mark Knorr, Matthew Knorr and Monty Knorr. Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Ray was born October 31, 1923 to Paul Tucker and Ida Ann (Riechardt) Falconer in Adams County, Iowa. On March 10, 1944 he was united in marriage to Sarah Rundlett in Corning. They lived in Southeast Adams County, Creston for 26 years and in their present home west of Afton for 23 years. Ray did custom corn shelling and was an independent road construction machine owner. He served in the US Army from 1943-1946 and the Normandy Invasion D-Day +6. He was a lifetime member of the Theodore J. Martens VFW Post 1797, American Legion and Creston Eagles Club. Survivors include his wife Sarah of Afton, 2 daughters, Carol and husband John Knorr of Bennet, Nebraska and Barbara and husband Larry Butler of Kearney, Nebraska, 2 sisters, Lois and Russell Hardisty of Afton and Alice and husband Orvin Bowers of Creston, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Stcve Graham of Diagonal died Monday, February 14, 2000 on his farm. He had farmed in the Diagonal and Benton communities for his entire life. Steve was born the oldest of two children to Donald Dean Graham and Ruby Belle (Bowen) Graham on March 27, 1955. Both of his parents preceded him in death. He graduated from Diagonal High School in 1973. Aside from his passion for farming Steve was very prominent on the tractor pull circuit for several years and found time for his other interests including hunting and trapping. On June 3, 1978 Steve married his longtime sweetheart JerriLynn (Taylor) Graham. They have three children: Jessica Lynn, age 16, Daniel Lee age 14 and Benjamin Taylor Graham age 11. Steve is survived on his parent's side by his sister, Cynthia Graham) Schlapia and husband Robert, along with their three children, Amanda and husband Jason Heck, Amy and Adam. Steve is survived on Jerri's side of the family by his mother-in-law Sandra Taylor, whose husband John Wallace Taylor preceded him in death, his sister- in-law Bobbi Jean (Taylor) Coppola, her husband Joe and their four children Joe IL, Tony, Cary and Kyle. He is also survived by another sister-in-law Jackie Ann (Taylor) Bohn, her husband Steven and their son Jackson. Steve will also be remembered by his many uncles, aunts and cousins. Services were held Thursday, February 17, 2000 at United Church of Diagonal with the Rev. Pam Farren officiating. Music was provided by Dr. Collus Lawhead, Kathy Nelson and Judy Newton. Juanita (Wynn) Harper passed away at her home in Arizona on Feb. 29, 2000. She is survived by one son, Vincent Crouse of Evergreen, Colorado, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, a sister Inez Keever of Corning, and a sister-in-law, Louise Wynn of Lenox. She was preceded in death by her husband. Kenneth Harper, a sister Dorothy Walter and two brothers, Harold "Percy" Wynn and Jesse Wynn. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa Wednesday March 15, 2000 Harper, Juanita Maude Wynn Crouse- Juanita Maude Harper was born April 23, 1911, in Earlton, Kansas and passed away February 29, 2000, at her home in Apache Junction, Ariz. She was the daughter of Edna and Sherman Wynn and lived in Kansas as a small girl. She later moved to Iowa where she graduated from Lenox High School. She taught in rural schools and later became a beauty operator in Creston. She also worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. On March 29, 1935, she was married to Dr. Waldo "Doc" Crouse. They were blessed with a son, Vincent Dean Crouse. On November 8, 1959, she married Kenneth M. Harper. She was an active member of the East Mesa Baptist Church in Apache Junction, Arizona. She enjoyed dancing, bridge, and sports. She is survived by her son Vincent of Evergreen, Colo.; granddaughter Becky and husband Richard of Johnston, Iowa; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mr. Inez Keever of Corning; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Wynn of Lenox; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers; one sister; and one grandson. Memorial services were held on July 8 with interment in the Memorial Gardens in Lenox, with Rev. Andy Johnson of Mount Ayr passed away January 24, 2000 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr at the age of 74. Mr. Johnson, the son of Walter Howard and Delia (Santage) Johnson was born June 23, 1925 in Peterson, Clay County. He graduated from Newell High School in 1942. He was united in marriage to Patricia Schott in Schaller on November 13, 1947. He owned and operated John Deere and Chevrolet dealerships in Newell from 1947-60 and Johnson Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick in Mount Ayr from 1960-84. He was a member of American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172 in Mount Ayr and Iowa Auto Dealers Association. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife, Pat Johnson in Mount Ayr; a daughter, Pam (husband Mac) Cross of Mount Ayr; two sons, Mark (wife Maria) Johnson of Bentonville, AR and Scott (wife Cindy) Johnson of Mount Ayr; a brother, Walter "Wally" Johnson of Florida; a sister, June Eno of Manson; 10 grand children and two great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, and father and mother-in-law, William and Irene Schott. Services were held January 27 at the Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with the Rev. Doug Greene officiating. The body of Raymond Robert Klocke, 56, of Denison was discovered Saturday morning on farm property located three miles west of Gravity Klocke was apparently the victim of a farm accident. The Sheriff's department report indicated that the body was pinned beneath a "Bushhog" style mower stalk shredder. Klocke was found by neighbors after his wife had called and asked them to locate him. He was last seen on Thursday, March 16. Elva Label, a native of Clearfield and Lenox, died at the age of 105. Elva L. Label was born February 4, 1895 in Clearfield, Taylor County, Iowa, as Elva Lavinia Black, the daughter of Patrick Black and Laura (Flake) Black. She spent her childhood in Clearfield and Lenox, Iowa, and Fredonia, Kansas, later moving to Kansas City, Mo., to take up a career as a secretary. In 1925 she moved to San Francisco, Cal., where she was employed for many years with Leo J. Meyberg Co., exporters of electrical equipment to the Orient. She met her future husband, Abraham Label, in San Francisco and they were married November 4, 1936 in Marin County, north of San Francisco. They lived and worked in San Francisco and maintained a second home in Forest Knolls, Marin County. They had no children. After her husband's death in 1971, she moved to Houston, Texas, where the family of her late brother, John Black, lived. Finally in 1978 she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to live with her recently widowed sister, Beulah Anderson. Mrs. Anderson died in 1993, after which Mrs. Label lived in Spring Park, Minn., until her death at age 105 on Feb. 28, 2000, at Waconia, Minn. During her California years, Mrs. Label enjoyed gardening and travel. She was an avid reader and an expert crossword puzzle solver and Scrabble player. She had a lifelong love of cats. Mrs. Label's heart was always in San Francisco. She often talked about walking across the Golden Gate bridge on the day it opened in 1936. After she reluctantly moved away in 1972, and until her health failed, she returned annually for long visits. Mrs. Label is survived by five nieces and nephews, 29 grand nieces and nephews and numerous great grand nieces and nephews. Although she had no children of her own, or perhaps because of that, she especially enjoyed the families of her brother and sister, and they returned her affection. She lived in three centuries - long enough to see three younger generations grow from infancy to adulthood. Burial was in the family plot with her father, mother, and infant twin brother at Clearfield, Iowa. Mrs. Label was the niece of early Lenox residents Henry Lyddon and Sarah (Black) Lyddon; George W. Leonard Rozmiarek was born November 13, 1923 at Paplin, Nebraska to John Rozmiarek and Frances (Princhek) Rozmiarek. He passed away March 1, 2000 at Clearview Home in Clearfield,; Iowa where he had been a resident since February 27, J999. Leonard lived in Colorado for a short time, then moved to Logan County in Nebraska in 1925. He lived on a farm and farmed in Logan County from 1925 to 1948. He leased and operated the Standard Station for five years, managed and worked at Logan County Co-op for 8 years, worked at Weems Elevator, and was employed by the Logan County Road Department from 1948-1950 and from 1971-1985 when he retired. He married Mildred (Curtis-Redenbo) On May 29, 1976. Leonard was a member of the Stapleton Chamber of Commerce, Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Associate Scout Master and on St. John's Parish Board for two terms. Leonard is survived by his wife, Mildred of Clearfield, IA, one sister, Martha Marley of North Platte, NE, two stepdaughters, Kathy (Don) Cross, of Creston, IA and Mary Lu (Dan) Coventon of Honduras, Central America and five grandchildren, Kadon (Jodi) Cross of Creston, Brandon Cross of Iowa City, Calista of Pine Bluff, AR, Nathan Coventon of Piano, TX and Matthew Coventon, Tulsa, OK and several nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by brothers Victor, Steven and Floyd; sisters Bertha, Johanna and Rosie and his parents. A memorial service was held at Clearview Home in Clearfield on Friday, March 3, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. Rosary was held at St. John's Catholic Church, Stapleton, NE on Monday, March 6, 2000 with funeral services following at 10:30 a.m. Interment was at the St. John's Catholic Cemetery at Stapleton, NE. The second early-morning, one-vehicle accident of the weekend resulted in the death of Donald W. Scott III, age 19, of Sharpsburg. The accident occurred 1.3 miles south of Sharpsburg in a corn field, according to the sheriff's department report. Scott was traveling east on 175th Street when the 1997 Dodge Avenger he was driving entered the south ditch. The vehicle went through a farm fence, continued through a corn field, crossed a creek, became stuck to a tree, then struck an embankment. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels in the creek and caught fire. Survivors of Donald Scott include by his parents, Donald and Kathy of Sharpsburg; sisters Nicole Paul (husband Chad) of Conway and Deanne Scott of Creston; maternal grandfather Don Saunders of Lenox; and paternal grandparents Don and Nellie Scott of Sharpsburg. Funeral services for Juanita M. Walter, who died Sunday, March 26, 2000 at the Lenox Care Center were held Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox with Pastor Tim Maxa officiating. Interment was held in the North Fairview Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Prescott Fire Department or the Lenox Ambulance Fund. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox. Juanita Mae Wyant Walter was born March 9, 1917 in Ringgold county, northeast of Clearfield, the only child of Hugh Bruce Wyant and Glenna Mae Wood Wyant. She grew up attending the Lincoln Township School in Ringgold County, graduating in 1930 from the eighth grade. She attended Clearfield High School during her freshman year, until her family moved to a farm northwest of Lenox where she completed her high school education, graduating in 1934. Juanita taught Country School northwest of Lenox until her marriage at her parent's home on February 15, 1936 to Glenndon (Denny) Walter. To this loving union three children were born, Mervin, Corene Ann, and Glenda Sue. Denny and Juanita farmed north of Stringtown for over fifty years. She enjoyed all aspects of being a farmer's wife. She was an active partner in die farming operation raising livestock and tending the fields. The family has many fond memories of camping at the State Fair. In 1983 Denny and Juanita retired from the farm and moved to Lenox. Juanita cared for her parents, aunts, and uncles in their later years, as well as enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Juanita was baptized into the Christian faith at the Clearfield Presbyterian Church as an infant and later became an active member of the Salem Brethren Church of Lenox. She was a Sunday school teacher and enjoyed many hours of volunteer work in the community. In November 1991, while preparing a meal for her grandchildren, J uanita's health was markedly changed by the effects of a stroke. On Jan. 2, 1992 Juanita made her residence at the Lenox Care Center where she was cared for by many loving hands. She passed away at the care center on March 26, 2000. Preceding Juanita in death were her husband Denny in 1991; her parents, Hugh and Glenna; and a daughter, Glenda Sue, in infancy. Left to cherish Juanita's memory are her son, Mervin Walter of Prescott, and his children, Cindy Jackson (husband Mike), Michael (wife Tammy), and Mark Walter (wife Karen); a daughter Corene Walter of Lenox, and her children, Holly Booth (husband Terry), Royce Boltinghouse (wife Caren) and Nicki Trost (husband Scot); and seven great-grandchildren, Jessica Jackson, Andrew and Nathan Walter and Travis Walter, Kindra and Kasey Booth and Evan Boltinghouse; a sister-in-law, Bertha Walter, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services for Duane Weaver, age 72 of Sharpsburg, who died Thursday, March 23, 2000 at his home, were held Sunday, March 26, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Al Rusk officiating. Interment was held in the Athelstan Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Powell Center at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford. Duane LeRoy Weaver was born April 4, 1927 near Blockton in Taylor County. Iowa the son of Raymond O. Weaver and D. Fern Golliday Weaver. In 1932 he started school at the Works School which he attended for 7 1/2 years and then the Blockton Community High School. Growing up Duane attended both school and worked on the farm. Duane went to work for a welding outfit and built up the joints on the rails for the Great Western Railroad. Later he went to work for Famo Feed Mill in St. Joseph, Mo., and traveled to different areas to shuck corn. He also worked for Ray Cook as a carpenter and helped to build the Missouri Theater in Maryville. It was while working there he met Virginia Clark who was attending the summer session at Northwest Missouri College. On May 28, 1945, he and Virginia were married in Troy, Kansas. To this loving union five sons were born, Larry, Terry, Dale, Richard and Delvin. Duane and Virginia made their home in Maryville where he worked at Gray Oil Company and later returned to Iowa to farm. Duane and Virginia had traveled to almost every state during his lifetime and he enjoyed camping and collecting mini John Deere tractors. Duane was a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and really enjoyed working at the State Fair driving the shuttles around. Duane was baptized into the United Methodist Church and attended the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Sharpsburg; the Sharpsburg Community Club and Assistant Commissioner of the Taylor County Soil Conservation. Left to cherish Duane's memory are his wife Virginia of Sharpsburg; five sons, Larry Weaver and wife Sharon of Sharpsburg; Terry Weaver and wife Trudy of Sharpsburg; Dale Weaver and wife Treasa of Lenox; Richard Weaver and wife Maureen of Red Oak; and Delvin Weaver and wife Patti of Des Moines; a brother, Donald "Buck" Weaver and wife Mary of Blockton; six sisters, Iona Force of Deepwater, Missouri; Marie Campbell and husband Paul of Blockton; Thelma Johnson of Blair, Nebraska; Fern Leight and husband, Don of West Point; Joye Weidler and husband Del of Iowa City and Mary Hildreth of Des Moines; a sister- in-law, Carol May and husband John of Mount Ayr; sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Katie J Wildt was born Dec. 20, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa the oldest of six children born to Henry F. Young and Geraldine Cordell Young. She grew up in the Athelstan area, where she went to school the eighth grade, then she attended Bedford Community School. On June 12, 1959 she was united in marriage to Laverne Wildt at the Blockton Christian Church. To this loving union three children were born, Laverne "Buster", Angela and Alisha. Katie and Laverne lived north of Bedford for nine years prior to moving to Bedford in 1968. She worked for O'Bryan Brothers sewing for nine and one-half years and then went to work for Eveready in Maryville where she worked for over seventeen years. Katie enjoyed crafts, sewing and doll collecting. She loved animals, especially cats and birds. Katie accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and was baptized at a young age. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school for young children for many years. Left to cherish Katie's memory are her loving husband Laverne of Bedford; her parents, Henry F. and Geraldine Young of Athelstan; a son, Laverne E. "Buster" Wildt and daughter Becky Wildt of Bedford; two daughters, Angela D. Evans of Seaside, Oregon; and Alisha Wildt of Bedford; a brother, Lester Young of Goldbar, Washington; three sisters Wanda South and husband Jim of Anita, Henrietta Mendes and husband Sergio of Saratoga, California; and Mary Eckert and husband Larry of Parnell, Missouri; and five grandchildren, along with a host of many friends. Hundreds of Taylor County area residents gathered at Lenox High School Tuesday afternoon to pay last respects to 18-year-old Tim Wilson of rural Lenox, who died early Saturday morning in a one vehicle accident near the Wilson home west of Lenox. The Lenox High senior is survived by his parents, Mark and Cheryl; brothers Ryan and Jake; paternal grandparents Marvin and Mary Bell Wilson, all of Lenox, and others who are included in a funeral notice inside this edition. Interment was held in the North Fairview Cemetery, with Ritchie Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Tim was very active in 4-H and was a member of the Platte Peppy Pals 4-H club. He was a member of the 4-H Youth Action committee, which is the county governing body of 4-H, was on the 4-H Senior Council and was vice-president of the Platte Peppy Pals. His mother Cheryl is the leader of that 4-H club. His accomplishments at the Taylor County Fair will be difficult to match for future exhibitors in the fair's livestock shows. Tim's entries took grand champion honors in both market swine and market steer divisions for two consecutive years. His livestock entries garnered a number of other lofty awards on both county and state levels. The 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme driven by Wilson was westbound on Route J-13 one mile west of Lenox when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle entered the south ditch, according to the Taylor County Sheriffs accident report. The car began to roll and ejected the driver. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels and faced north. Investigating the accident was the Taylor County Sheriffs Department, the Lenox Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol. Funeral services for Tim Wilson were held Tuesday afternoon at Lenox High School. Lenox schools were dismissed at 1 p.m. --- Funeral services for Tim Wilson, age 18 of Lenox, who died Saturday, March 18, 2000 as the result of the automobile accident, were held Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lenox High School Gymnasium with Pastors Pete Brantner, Audrey Westendorf and Tim Maxa officiating. Interment was held in the North Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given in Tim's name. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox. Timothy Paul Wilson was born May 4, 1981 in Creston, the son of Mark Wilson and Cheryl Franklin Wilson. Tim grew up in the Lenox area attending school at the Lenox Community High School where he was a Senior. Tim loved the farm and outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and camping with his family and friends. Mudrunning on his 4-wheeler was one of his favorite pastimes along with showing his cattle and hogs in 4-H: both on the county and state level. Tim was a third generation Lenox Stock & Saddle Club member, Senior Councilman, Youth Action Committee and a very active 4-H member. Tim will be remembered for having a great sense of humor; he enjoyed playing jokes on his family and friends. Tim was employed by Barker Implement in Lenox and had recently received a Letter of Acceptance from DMACC in Diesel Mechanics. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Mark and Cheryl Wilson and brothers Ryan and Jake Wilson, all of Lenox; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Mary Belle Wilson of Lenox; three aunts, Anne Nette Hanson and husband Stan and their children, Eric and Kara; Carol Garrity and children, Matt and Alaina; and Robin McGary and husband Steve and their children, Andrea and Brett; three uncles, Larry Franklin and daughter Wendy; Gary Franklin; and Paul Franklin and wife Diane, and their children, Jodi and Joel; along with many, many friends.
