Adolphsen, Alfred Amil (Lefty) -

Funeral services for Alfred Amil (Lefty) Adolphsen were held Friday, Sept. 30, 1988 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with

Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Alfred Amil (Lefty) Adolphsen was born near Summit, S.D., the third son of immigrant parents Lorenz and Caroline (Schulke)

Adolphsen on June 10, 1909. He died at his home on Sept. 27, 1988 at the age of 79 years, two months and 27 days.

Lefty attended school in the Columbus, Ks. area through the eighth grade.

Lefty was joined in marriage to Doris Swank on April 20, 1933 in Creston, Ia. Lefty and Doris farmed near Shannon City for three years. They moved to their farm south of Lenox, where they farmed until 1962. In 1962 the Adolphsens moved to their present home in Lenox.

Lefty loved the out-of-doors and worked hard on his farm. He enjoyed the out-of-doors so much that he even spent much of his

recreational time hunting and fishing and being outside. He was very instrumental in the development of Wilson Lake to the south of

Lenox for the enjoyment of all. Lefty was an active member of the American Trap Shooting Association. He was a strong believer in

soil conservation. Lefty had a keen interest in history. He owned a peace pipe the Indians had given his grandfather, a sword from the

Spanish-American war, a powder horn and a very old musket.

Lefty always enjoyed people. He was a Lenox booster. He was instrumental in the formation of the Lenox Airport and the Lenox Trap

Club. His word was legion and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances.

Lefty was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Albert and Elvin, a sister Lena Coons, an infant sister and three nephews.

Lefty is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Clara Stauffer of Columbus, Ks.; Mrs. Eda Hansen of Arispe, Ia.; Mrs. Mina Boland of Petosky,

Mi.; Mrs. Elsie Bruce of Sterling, Co.; Mrs. Lucille Pearson of Rockford, Il. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and a

multitude of friends from near and afar.

All who knew Lefty are saddened by his death and will miss him very much.

Boltinghouse, Minnie (Ruth) Nixon -

Services for Minnie Ruth Boltinghouse were held Monday, August 22, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack

Cutbirth and Dr. Ray Nixon officiating. Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Ia.

Minnie Ruth Boltinghouse was born November 10, 1895, on the family farm 5-1/2 miles west of Lenox. She was the youngest of 12

children born to Hugh and Mary Catherine Jopling Nixon. She attended Taylor County School, Drake University normal training

school and later taught near Lenox and Afton for seven years.

Ruth met Floyd Boltinghouse at Blue Grove Christian Church where both of their families attended. They were married on March 3,

1920, and lived on a farm near Sharpsburg. They later moved to their home in Lenox and were active members of the Lenox

Christian Church their entire lives.

In addition to farming they raised and showed Belgian horses. They always worked side by side and were devoted companions. Floyd

preceded her in death in 1956.

Family, home, church, and music were Ruth's special interests in life. She was honored for being organist for 50 years at the Lenox Christian Church. At this time she told the congregation that she considered it an honor to serve the Lord with music for worship, weddings, and funerals.

Ruth loved her home, she was devoted to all family members and they often spoke of the importance to her of family love. A special joy

in her life was holidays and family dinners in her home surrounded by family members and nieces and nephews of three generations.

She left this life on August 19, 1988, She will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law, Edith Nixon; numerous nieces and nephews and

many friends.

Besides her husband Floyd, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, and five brothers.

Brammer, Lometa Pearl Reed -

Funeral services for Lometa Pearl Brammer were held at the Sharpsburg Methodist Church Friday, July 29, 1988 at 10 a.m. with Rev.

Duane Ferguson officiating. Interment was at the Conway Cemetery, Conway, Ia.

Lometa Pearl Brammer, daughter of William and Erma Reed, was born at Lenox, Ia. on December 28, 1925, and departed this life on July

26, 1988 at the Clarinda Hospital at the age of 62 years and seven months.

Lometa lived on a farm near Lenox where she attended public school and the Methodist Church.

On October 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joe Creese Brammer and they lived in the Lenox and Sharpsburg areas all their lives

together. To this union four children were born, Jolene Fletchall, Larry Brammer, Cynthia Campbell and William Brammer.

She was a devoted housewife and a wonderful mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Bill, a brother Orville, and a sister Nina.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Joe, children Jolene and husband Danny Fletchall, Larry and wife Michelle, Cindy and

husband Jack Campbell, and Jan Brammer; also Dennis Cribbs and wife Barb who was like a son to Lometa; 12 grandchildren and four

great granddaughters, as well as a host of family and friends, all of whom were much loved by Lometa.

Lometa was a member of the Sharpsburg Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid, and faithfully attended as long as her health

permitted.

She was a kind and considerate mother and friend, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Brown, Frances Carruthers -

Funeral services for Frances Carruthers Brown was held Saturday, July 9, 1988 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with

Rev. Paul Grandon and Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Frances Carruthers Brown was born March 24, 1912, the oldest child of Will Jr. and Mae Porter Carruthers on a farm in rural

Adams County. She died July 5, 1988 on the farm two and three-fourths miles north of Lenox.

Frances moved to her present home north of Lenox in 1913 when she was one year old. She lived on the same place almost all of her

life. The exception was from 1932-1944 she lived west of Corning, Ia. and from 1945 until 1947 she lived south Lenox, Ia.

Frances attended country school through the eighth grade and also attended Lenox High School.

Frances was united in marriage to Louis L Brown on March 27, 1932 at the Corning Methodist parsonage. They enjoyed 56 years of

life together.

Frances was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Sunnyside Club.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Will Jr. and Mae Carruthers, and one sister, Theo Carruthers in infancy.

Frances is survived by her husband, Louis L Brown; her sister, Leone Fyrdenberg and her husband Palmer; along with numerous cousins, neighbors and friends.

Frances enjoyed her life and especially living on the farm. She loved the animals she helped to care for. She found pleasure in

nurturing her garden. She enjoyed beautifying her corner of the world with flowers. Her life was filled with the various tasks of life and it brought her joy to do kind things for others. Frances will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Carey, Myrtle Marie Thompson -

Funeral services for Myrtle Carey were held Monday, July 25, 1988 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Burial was at East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Myrtle Marie Carey was born April 11, 1920 in Lenox, Ia., the only child of Lloyd and Carrie Wurster Thompson. She died in her

home in Lenox July 23, at the age of 68, after a two year bout with cancer.

Myrtle grew up in the Lenox area and graduated from Lenox High School in 1938. She married Harold (Bud) Carey June 12, 1952 in

Davenport, Ia.

Myrtle taught school for 13 years in country schools and at Conway Elementary.

She served as executive director of Sunrise Apartments in Lenox for 10 years. She was also a member of the Southern Iowa Regional Housing Committee. Myrtle was an elder in the Lenox United Presbyterian Church and she served on the Des Moines Presbytery Committee on Ministry. Myrtle taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the PEO since 1955 and she was a member of the Mayflower Club.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bud, and their two sons, Jack and his wife, Julia and

their son, Sean, live in Des Moines. Jim and his wife, Chris and their son, Matthew, live in Topeka, Ks.

Carlton, Goldie Alderson -

Goldie (Alderson) Carlton was born May 22, 1888 in Marion County, Illinois, daughter of U.B. (Barney) Alderson and Florence

(Murphy) Alderson. At the age of two years she moved to Kinmundy, Ill. with her parents. In 1895 she moved with her family to

Lenox, Ia. where she grew to womanhood, graduating from Lenox High School in 1907.

On December 25, 1910 she was married to Jean R. Carlton at her home in Lenox, Ia. To this union two children were born; a daughter

Louise and a son David (Tom). The family moved to Missouri in 1916, living 27 years in that state. While living in Maryville, Mo. the

daughter lost her life in a car accident. The son gave his life for his country in World War II in the South Pacific Islands, while serving

in the Marine Corp on November 20, 1943.

Goldie and her husband moved back to Iowa in 1943, settling on a farm in Ringgold County. On account of her husband's health,

they moved to Creston, Ia. on February 18, 1957. Her husband passed away May 26, 1959.

Besides her husband and children, her parents, two brothers, and a niece preceded her in death.

She leaves a niece, Patricia Early of Portland, Or., a niece-in-law, Peggie Alderson of Shawnee Mission, Ks., a daughter-in-law,

Mrs. Ethel Brady of California; four great nephews, two great nieces, several cousins, and friends.

Goldie entered the O.E.S. Home in Boone, Ia. on November 10, 1972, having been a member of Eastern Star for 40 years. She has

been a member of the Methodist Church since she was 10 years old. She was a member of V.F.W. of Creston, Ia.

Goldie passed away July 30, 1988 at the Boone Hospital. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the O.E.S. Home in Boone

and graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Ia.

Clark, Richard (Dick) -

Richard "Dick" Clark, son of Fred T. and Louise (Williams) Clark was born July 18, 1924 in Creston, Ia. and passed away August 5, 1988

at the age of 64 years, 18 days at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines after a short illness.

He attended grade school and high school in Creston. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and remained there for almost

9-1/2 years, serving during World War II in Panama Canal Zone and in the Pacific. He worked on the Burlington CB&Q Railroad and

worked as a truck driver and a mechanic.

He was a life member of the VFW and DAV. He belonged to the Paternal Order of Eagles AERIE #1398 in Creston.

He returned to Iowa in 1981 after living in Colorado, California and Nevada. He married Juanita Calvin House on January 23, 1981 in

Indianola and had been living in Creston until a year ago and moved to Lenox. He liked to fish, hunt and enjoyed traveling in their motor

home and remodeling their homes. He was a loving, devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife Juanita of Lenox; three sons Ronald of Santa Rosa, Ca., Fred T. of Battle Mountain, Nv., and Charles Clark of Reno, Nv.; daughters Judith of Reno, Nv., and twin daughters Martha Baker of Palmdale, Ca. and Louise Eagle of Santa Rosa, Ca.; 12 grandchildren including twins; stepson, Stephen House of Des Moines; stepdaughter Deborah Barrick of Fort Worth, Tx.; five stepgrandchildren; a half sister Pat Clark of Tarzana, Ca.; three brothers Earl of Van Wert, Ia.; Harold "Chippy" of Green Valley, Az.; and twin brother Robert of Creston; two sisters, Kathryn Cody of Sale Creek, Tn.; and Mildred Truman of Lucerne Valley, Ca.; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret Clark and Ruth Wiedeman.

Memorial services were held August 27, 1988 at 2 p.m. at Larkin Funeral Home in Creston with the Rev. Lyle Kuehl officiating.

Committal services were in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Ia.

Dill, Beulah Ann Shelman -

Funeral services for Beulah Ann Shelman Dill were Friday, August 12, 1988 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Dr. Jack

Cutbirth officiating. Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Ia.

Beulah Ann Shelman Dill, daughter of Leo and Christie Rowen Shelman, was born October 7, 1908 in Sheridan, Mo. She died at her

home in Lenox, Ia., August 10, 1988 after a long illness at the age of 79. She attended Sheridan Schools and later taught in the

Hopkins, Mo. area.

On November 17, 1927, Beulah was united in marriage to Raymond W. Dill at Bedford. During their lives together both were active in

farming.

Beulah Ann was baptised in 1922 at the Christian Church in Sheridan, Mo. She came in to the Lenox Christian Church in 1982 by letter

of transfer.

Beulah is survived by husband Raymond W. Dill of Lenox; two brothers, Arlie Shelman of Hopkins, Mo., and Clyde Shelman of

La Junta, Co.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Virgil, and one sister Eva Brown.

Hale, Lela Fern Boltinghouse -

Lila Fern Hale, daughter of Joseph and Mary Herring Boltinghouse, was born April 15, 1899, at the family farm west of Lenox. She

died September 24, 1988 at Mercy Hospital, Corning, Ia.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Burial was

at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

On October 23, 1919, Lila was married to Leo Hale in Lenox where they lived all of their lives.

Lila was employed by Western Telephone Company where she served as an operator and was chief operator for 40 years. When she and Leo agreed to purchase the Villa Rio in 1929, they began a venture that would enshrine their names in the memories of the youngsters who skated with them during the next 44 years. She was also active in the Christian Church, the Rebekah Lodge, and the LF.G. Club,

Lila was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leo, and two brothers Harley and Frank.

Those left to remember her love are her sister Loleta Anderson of Greeley, Co; her nieces, Gertrude Bruington and Vicky Taylor; her

nephews David Hale and Terry Anderson; and great nieces Amanda Taylor and Lisa and Julie Anderson.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Henderson, Carroll L. -

Carroll L Henderson, 73, died at the Veteran's Care Facility at Knoxville, Ia. August 25, 1988 after a long illness. Graveside services

were held at the Knoxville Veterans Cemetery at Knoxville, Ia.  Carroll was the youngest son of Jesse F. and Ida Henderson, born May 21, 1915 at Sharpsburg, la.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

He is survived by two brothers, Myrle Henderson of Lenox and Raymond Henderson of Hemet, Ca. and one sister, Irene Gillespie of

Yates Center, Ks.; nieces; nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Glenn Henderson of Lenox.

Miller, Coryl Elizabeth Damewood Jones -

Coryl Elizabeth Damewood, daughter of Clyde Melvin and Blanche May Damewood, was born March 25, 1912, at the family farmstead near Sharpsburg. She was to have three sisters: Blythe Larene, Margaret Eva, and Doris May. She attended country school at Marshall #2, followed by high school at Sharpsburg. In her early childhood, she was baptized into the Methodist Church at Gravity.

In 1930 Coryl was united in marriage to Charlie Jones, Jr. To this union was born two daughters: Mary Margaret and Coryl Belle

(Chinky). This family spent their entire married life on a farm two miles east of Sharpsburg. In 1952, Charlie lost his life in a farm

related accident, but the family continued to live on the farm.

On February 25, 1955, Coryl was married to Raymond Jr. (Bing) Miller. They continued to live on the farmstead and operated the

Miller Chevrolet Dealership in Lenox. Coryl was a full partner and bookkeeper for the firm. During these years, they were blessed with

Leanne Tyler as a member of the Eberle family, and three granddaughters: Coryl Ann Hurd, Kay Marie Eberle, and Kim Kristine

Eberle.

Coryl was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Margaret, great granddaughter Mary Kay Hurd, sisters Blythe and Doris, and her parents.

Besides her husband Bing, left to remember her love and to mourn her passing are her daughter Chinky and husband Bill Eberle;

sister Margaret and husband Vane Lucas; three granddaughters; three great grandsons: Shane, Toby and Andy; and a host of relatives and friends.

Coryl was a kind and loving person; always interested in the welfare of those around her. She was an ambitious person who shared in all family responsibilities, as well as the concerns of her friends and relatives. She suffered greatly the last weeks of her life, but never complained. She cooperated completely with the doctors, nurses, and all others who worked to make her comfortable. She is already greatly missed by her husband and family as well as friends who tried to assist her.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Burial was

at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.  [Coryl died Sept. 3, 1988]

Orr, Arsema Grace Aronhalt (Grace) -

Funeral services for Grace Orr were held Friday, July 8, 1988 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Donald Fisher officiating.

Burial was at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Ia.

Grace Orr, 95, passed away July 5, 1988 at the Lenox Care Center.

Arsema Grace Aronhalt, daughter of Cornelius Newton and Arsema Weaver Aronhalt, was born in Polk County, Iowa, on May 9, 1893 She

graduated from Clearfield High School and Simpson College in Indianola. Grace taught country schools near Gravity and Clearfield

for several years.

On September 11, 1918, she was united in marriage to Elmer Orr at the Methodist parsonage in Tingley, Ia. They moved to the family

farm between Clearfield and Lenox, and became members of the United Presbyterian Church in Clearfield, and later of Calvary Country

Church for many years. This union was blessed with a daughter, Leila Louise, and a son, Harold Eugene.

Preceding her in death were her parents, son-in-law Leo Gormley; sisters Pearl Ross, Jessie Gibbs, and Edna Ross; and brother Ralph

Aronhalt.

She is survived by her daughter Leila Gormley of Van Nuys, Ca.; son Harold Orr and wife LaVawn of Northridge, Ca.; grandchildren:

Linda Brubaker and husband Chris, Suzanne Gormley, Linsey Orr and wife Joan, Jon Orr, all of California; and Cheryl Lee Pollack

and husband Edward of Connecticut; one great grandson, Sam Pollack; and many nieces and nephews.

Porter, Harley Allen -

Harley Allen Porter, son of John A. and Metta Killion Porter, was born at Manchester, Ia. July 17, 1912. Following a long illness with

cancer he passed away at his home in Lenox July 31, 1988 at the age of 76 years and 14,days. As an infant he returned to Lenox with his

parents. He was an honor graduate of the Lenox High School class of 1930. He taught rural one room schools in Adams and Taylor

counties, managed and played the piano for the "Red Jackets" and Red Porter and his Melodians dance bands.

On December 16, 1933 he married Agnes Catherine Houchin of Corning at Wathena, Ks. It was a marriage of nearly 55 years. Two sons, Thomas and John, died shortly after birth. A third son, Joe Allen, survives. In 1935 he and his wife moved to Iowa City where he entered the University of Iowa. A gift of $100 from his grandfather Killion encouraged him to pursue an education. Both he and his wife worked until he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938.

He taught in the public schools at Kingsley and Muscatine, Ia. From Muscatine he began his Civil Service career at the Rock Island

Arsenal. He and his family were transferred to the Tooele Army Depot, Tooele, Utah in the spring of 1943. At that time the country

was united in the great effort to win World War II. During his long career he was honored with several "Superior Performance" awards.

His last position was Equal Employment Opportunity Officer of the Tooele Army Depot. His career ended when, after 30 years, he and

his wife retired in 1973.

In 1921, as a child of nine, he made his confession of faith to Jesus the Christ and was baptized in the Lenox Christian Church.

While in Utah he belonged to the United Methodist Church. There he served as teacher, organist, and on the official board.

A year after retirement he and his wife moved to Lenox so he could care for his mother and her brother. His membership was

returned to the Lenox Christian Church where he served as deacon, teacher, organist and on the official board.

While in Utah he was honored for over 25 years of service to the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the National Federation

of Federal Employees and served as local president and state chairman.

He is survived by his wife Agnes of Lenox, his son Joe Allen and his wife Pip, granddaughter Pippa, and grandson Joshua Porter all of

Denver, Co., his aged mother Metta Porter of the Lenox Care Center, sister Julia and husband Charles Peterson of Avoca, Ia.,

three nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his father and two infant sons.

Harley Allen will be remembered as one with deep commitments of love for his family, church, and friends. His music was a source of

pleasure to himself and others. He enjoyed many hours at the organ in his home and at church. His personality was boundless and

encompassed all those he met. He knew no strangers. He met everyone with a big smile and a hearty handshake. He was blessed

with wit, humor, and compassion.

Memorial services were held at the Lenox Christian Church at 10 a.m. on August 2, 1988. Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiated with Mr.

Donald Jensen assisting. Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery. Attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Daggett of Tulsa, Ok.

Rogers, Robert Richard -

Funeral services for Robert Richard Rogers were held at the Slade and Duerr Funeral Home in Leon, Ia. on Sunday, July 3, 1988

at 2 p.m. with Mr. Hubert Hackler officiating. Burial was in the Leon.

Robert Richard Rogers, son of Charles William Rogers and Elizabeth Hannah (Scott) Rogers was born February 7, 1900 in Lenox, Ia.

and died July 1, 1988 at his home in Leon, la. at the age of 88 years, four months and 24 days.

He attended school in Lenox.  Robert was married to Flora Beck and she preceded him in death in 1957.

On January 27, 1959, Robert was united in marriage to Nellie Conkel in Osceola, Ia. He farmed northeast of Leon until 1970 when he retired and he and Nell moved to their present home in Leon. Robert was a member of the Decatur United Methodist Church and a 65-year member of Grand River Lodge #78 A.F. & A.M. and also a member of the Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Flora; four brothers: Ernest, Alpha, Ray and Orville; and two sisters, Effie

Gibson and Vera Weatherman.

Surviving Robert are his wife Nellie of Leon; and two sisters, Mary McGregor of Creston, Ia. and  Faye Hockett of Lenox; nieces,

nephews, other relatives and friends.

Shearer, H Orlen -

H. Orlen Shearer, the son of Arch G. and Myrtle Johnson Shearer, was born on October 24, 1914 in Clarinda. He entered into

rest at his home in Creston, Ia. on September 3, 1988 at the age of 73 years, 10 months and nine days.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1988 at Larkin Funeral Home in Creston, Ia. with Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Interment

was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Clarinda, Ia.

He spent his early years in the Clarinda community and graduated from high school there. Orlen served his country in the U.S.

Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for Central Burma Campaign 1944, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific

Theatre Campaign ribbon, and four over-seas bars. He was a life member of the Theodore J. Martens Post #117 of the V.F.W. in

Creston, and is a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Creston.

Orlen spent most of his life in the Creston community and operated several nursing homes and an ambulance service for many years.

On November 3, 1971 he was united in marriage with Wilma Marie Dukes Brant at Albert Lea, Mn.

He was preceded in death, by his parents, a son Paul in infancy, one half-sister and a half-brother.

Surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Wilma of Creston; two sons: Wayne Shearer and his wife Manuela of Ft. Eustes, Va.; and

Terry Shearer and his wife Brenda of Omaha, Ne.; and by two grandsons and one granddaughter; other relatives and many friends.
