Bailey, Ruby Hazel -

A graveside and interment service will be held for Ruby Hazel

Bailey, 90, on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Clearfield

cemetery. Ruby passed away November 5, 2002 as a result of

congestive heart failure, and a memorial service was held in Des

Moines, Iowa were she lived at that time.

Ruby Hazel Bailey was born November 1, 1912, in Clearfield,

Iowa the eldest daughter of Milo and Cora (Ruby) Bailey. She

was proceeded in death by her parents and sisters Myra and Isabel,

and her brother, Milo.

Ruby grew up in Clearfield and later the family moved to Stuart,

Iowa. As an adult she lived with her sister Myra in Omaha and

Sun City, then moved to Adair, Iowa to be with her sister, Isabel.

In 1992, at age 80, she moved to Des Moines, where for the first

time in her life she was able to live independently. Ruby excelled

as a seamstress and in needlework. She sewed for private

customers, took in alterations, was always making something for

her many nieces-much to their delight! In later years, she also

volunteered with Al-Anon in Sun City, and spent countless hours

listening and giving encouragement to those in AA.

On November 1, 2002, Ruby celebrated her 90th birthday—an

accomplishment for which she was quite proud. No one in her

family had ever lived that long before! Woven throughout large

part  of those 90-years is Ruby's relationship with Jesus Christ.

She quietly lived out her faith which was shaped and strengthened

in her trials of sickness and infirmity.

At age 3 she developed an infection from a bruise on her leg.

The leg seized at the knee, and when the Dr. straightened it they

put her iron enclosed cast to the hip for 6 months. They forgot she

was growing, which resulted in one leg being shorter than the

other. Abscesses developed as a result of TB of the spine (Potts

Disease) and often it seemed that she would not live through the

sickness and pain that resulted This begin a time of trips to Iowa

City Children's Hospital.

John passed away on Friday, May 16, 2003, at Creighton

John William Donaldson was born June 1, 1955 the son of

Donald Eugene Donaldson and Betty Lou Brown Donaldson. He

grew up and lived in the Sharpsburg area attending Sharpsburg

School until they consolidated with Lenox, graduating in 1974.

In May of 1974, John was in a car accident that left him disabled

from the waist down. He dealt with the injury not as a handicap,

but an inconvenience. John was most determined not to let this

situation hold him back.

John farmed for a time after the accident but the physical

demands were too much. In the spring of 1975 he got involved

with C.B. Radios, later receiving his schooling in Wausau, MN

and then to Fredericksburg, Virginia to receive his Second and

First Class F.C.C. License. After his schooling, John came back to

Sharpsburg, built himself a house, and started his radio repair

business, which he operated until his death. The weekend that

John moved into his new home he met Sandra McCloud at the

Sharpsburg Friendship Days. The couple fell in love and six

months later they were married on February 16, 1978. In 1992, a

daughter Emalie came to bless their lives followed by a son,

Samuel in March, 2000. John was passionate about his family and

they were his life.

John was elected to the Lenox School Board in 1998 and

elected President in 2000. He then decided he wanted to become a

teacher so he went back to school, attending Southwestern

Community College, receiving his Associate of Arts Degree. He

later enrolled at Northwest Missouri State University and

completed one year of classes and had started summer school.

He was an active member of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian

Church serving as an Elder, active in 4-H, Calves and Black

Angus Heifers, a member of the Goodguys Motor Club. John was

always interested in how things were put together and how they

worked. From a young age to an adult he was always taking things

apart and putting them back together, a skill John used all of his

life. He loved working on restoring old cars. John enjoyed being

around people, and had the gift of relating to them no matter what

their age. John had a way about him that put people at ease and

gravitate towards him.

Fry, Murphy Francis -

One line on the accident report from Tuesday evening's traffic

fatality read "Location: 3 miles west of Creston on Hwy 34."

Seven months ago, that same location was the scene of a traffic

accident that claimed the life of Lenox resident Gary Hartford. On

Tuesday, June 3, three miles west of Creston on Highway 34 was

the scene of a traffic mishap that took the life of Murphy F. Fry, a

2001 graduate of Lenox High School.

An Iowa State Patrol preliminary accident report was provided

to the Time Table by the Union County Sheriff's Department.

That report indicated that Fry was traveling east on Highway 34

at 9 p.m. Tuesday when his 1985 Chevrolet truck crossed the center

line and struck a semi-trailer truck.

The semi was driven by Tyler Brobst, age 56, of Murray. He

was taken to Union County Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Brobst was driving a feed truck owned by Farmers Co-Op of

Afton.

Murphy Fry was a student at Southwestern Community

College in Creston and had earlier been named as a SWCC

ambassador. Until recently he worked at the Apple Barn

Restaurant & Lounge in Lenox. His address on the accident report

is listed as Creston, but he spent considerable time around Lenox

and Sharpsburg, where much of his family lives. He had just

celebrated his 21 st birthday on May 27.

Survivors include his parents, Steve and Sue Basler of

Sharpsburg and Rod Fry of Creston; a sister, Bailey Fry, who

graduated this year from Lenox High; step-brother Kevin Basler

and step-sisters Kari and Kelli Basler.

More details will be published in next week's edition.

Fry, Murphy Francis -

Celebration of life services for Murphy Fry, age 21, of Creston,

formerly of Lenox, who died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 were held

Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox High School

Gymnasium. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery in

Creston. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be

given to the Murphy Fry Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were

entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Murphy Francis Fry was born May 27, 1982, in Creston, Iowa the

son of Rodney Fry and Susan and Steve Basler, brother of Kari,

Kevin and Kelli Basler and Bailey Fry.

Murphy lived in Creston throughout his early childhood years,

where he was baptized and received first communion at Holy Spirit

Catholic Church. He spent many long summer days biking, fishing

and goofing off with his best friend Kyle and the other

neighborhood friends. Murphy attended Preschool through the

middle of fifth grade in Creston attending both St. Malachy and

Creston Public Schools. In 1994, he moved to a farm outside of

Sharpsburg, Iowa. He then attended the Lenox School from fifth

grade through high school graduation in 2001. Murphy continued

his education at Southwestern Community College, where he was

an active Student Ambassador. He graduated this Spring 2003 with

his Associate of Arts degree. He planned to continue his schooling

to pursue a degree in Mortuary Science.

Murphy was an ambitious child who was always involved in

many activities, including riding stunt bikes, building chopper

bikes, playing Nintendo, collecting baseball cards, and advancing

over the years to stereos and cars. He loved working on his Bronco

and later rebuilding his 1985 Chevy Silverado. Murphy was also

active in 4-H, raising and showing pigs and calves. He enjoyed

family outings and adventures. Fishing and hunting were regular

events with his friends and family even though Murphy never got

any!

While attending high school, Murphy was active in football,

golf and wrestling. During one football game, Murphy hustled so

hard, even the referee gave him a "high five"! His senior year,

Murphy beat a ranked wrestler at the John Harris Tournament. At

that tournament, he helped Lenox obtain a third place trophy and

the Team Sportsmanship Award. Murphy also golfed on the school

golf team. He was especially proud of himself for being inducted

into National Honor Society.

Shortly after the Applebarn Restaurant opened in 1999,

Murphy became an all-around employee: cooking, waiting tables,

cleaning, and ordering food.

Murphy enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He

had a gift of relating to others, no matter what their age. He had a

pleasant manner that made others gravitate to him. He was

infamous for 'popping-in' on relatives for a visit and just as

unexpectedly, 'popping-out'.

Murphy had many friends, young and old, however we all

know that the majority of them were LADIES! It must have been

that smile that made people trust in him. Murphy enjoyed spending

a lot of time with family.

Murphy was loved by a large family, many friends, and

classmates. Murphy achieved a daunting task: to be liked and

accepted into many communities. Lenox, Creston, Corning,

Bedford, Sharpsburg and Mt. Ayr all managed a home for Murphy

and his tremendous heart. He will be greatly missed in more areas

than are listed.

Left to cherish Murphy's memory are his mother Susan Basler

and husband Steve of Sharpsburg; father Rodney Fry of Creston;

grandparents, Gale and Barb Fry and Robert Bierkamp, all of

Creston; Bob and Dorothy Basler of Lenox; three sisters, Bailey

Des Moines; a brother, Kevin Basler of St. Louis, Missouri; great

grandparents, Falma Beardsley of Murray; Vivian Stephens of

Davenport; Dr. E.R. and Bessie Pennebaker of Lenox; many aunts,

uncles, cousins, friends and loved ones.

Preceding Murhpy in death is his grandmother Judith

Bierkamp; aunt Julie Durand; grandfather Francis Gerald Durand;

great-grandfather, William Francis Fry; and cousin Ressie Holbrook.

Hughes, Glen I -

Funeral services for Glen Hughes, age 71 of Bedford, were

held Sunday, April 27, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral

Home in Bedford. Glen died Thursday, April 24, 2003 enroute

to St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.

Interment with military rites accorded by the John F. Hardin

American Legion Post No. 164 were held in the Conway Cemetery

in Conway. Memorials can be given in Glen's name. Arrangements

were by Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Glen I. Hughes was born February 18, 1932 on a form near

Conway, the son of Glen Milo Hughes and Pearl Cavner Hughes.

He grew up on the farm and attended grade school in the country

and high school in Conway. He continued to live in the area for all

of his life, except for the two years spent in the United States

Army.

Glen enlisted in the Army in 1952. He attained the rank of

sergeant as a Combat Veteran in the Korean War. He earned a

Combat Medic's Badge, four Battle Stars and the Sigmund Rhee

Medal from his assignment with the South Korean Army. He also

received a Letter of Commendation from his Captain for his

outstanding performance of duty while serving with the 115th

Medical Battalion.

After his discharge from the service in 1954, he joined the

American Legions in Lenox, Conway and finally as a lifetime

member of the John F. Hardin Post No. 164 in Bedford. He felt

particular pride in helping to honor his fellow veterans at the time

of their death. Glen was very patriotic and proud of his service to

his country.

On Sept. 5, 1954, he was united in marriage to Wilma Barrens

in Lenox, Iowa. Glen always declared that she was not only his

wife but also his best friend. The couple has been together for 48

years, living the entire time on the same farm southeast of Conway,

within half a mile of where he was born. Three children were born

to bless this marriage; Bonny, Tony and David.

Glen loved working the land, caring for the animals, and being

his own boss. He had no plans to retire as he somehow had the

feeling no one else could take care of his farm as well as he could.

He also said that if he retired, he would have to be out running up

and down the road, and he thought that would be too much trouble.

Glen dearly loved his family and was very proud of his six

grandchildren, all ranging in age from 27 years to 11 months. He

enjoyed this year's Easter Sunday with all of his children and

grandchildren visiting and getting to be the Chief, (complete with

feathers in his cap!) while they moved a garage for him.

One of the highlights in his life was being with the whole

family on the Oregon coast for David and Kim's wedding in

September 1998. He and the rest of the family continue to

reminisce years afterwards about the memories of their stay in the

oceanfront condo, playing on the beach and having good quality

family time together.

He also loved visiting with his friends. He loved to get into a

good conversation at Tony's shop or at the Junction Cafe, where

he and Wilma spent every Saturday night as he tried to sit in every

chair while she played keyboard with the band. He always said he

was her 'Roadie' but wished she played something lighter like a

flute! He retained his sense of humor to the end, making jokes with

the ambulance crew who were trying to help him.

Left to cherish Glen's memory are his loving wife Wilma of

Bedford; a daughter, Bonny Baker and husband Jerry of Bedford;

two sons, Tony Hughes and wife Lori of Bedford; and David

Hughes and wife Kim of Louisville, Neb.; six grandchildren, Dan

Baker and wife Jade and Kristi Alonzo and husband Alex, son and

daughter of Bonny and Jerry; Julie Jo, Ryan and Kyle Hughes,

daughter and sons of Tony and Lori; and Stacy Hughes, daughter

of David and Kim; three sisters, Darline Ernest and husband

Willis; Dorothy Kirby and husband Virgil; and Luetta Schmitt and

husband Jim; a sister-in-law, Marian Barrens; along with many

nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding Olen in death were his parents, Glen and Pearl; two

brothers-in-law, William Barrens and Orlan Kinman; and his

mother and father-in-law, George and Edra Barrens.
