Cochran, Orson -
Orson
Cochran, 80, former resident of the Lenox area, died at Clarinda, Iowa January
9, 1972.
Mr.
Cochran, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cochran, was born November 19, 1891 at
Lenox, Ia.
He
was raised in the Lenox area and was married to Gertrude Shaw December 14,
1918. Mrs. Cochran was killed in a car accident in 1929. He married Angle Clark
October 14, 1931 at Omaha, Nebr. They farmed in the Lenox area until 1956 when
they moved to Mt. Ayr. They lived there for two years
then moved to Clarinda and have resided there since.
He
was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarinda.
He
is survived by his wife, Angie, one daughter, Mrs. Elvin (Veldeva)
Long of Jefferson City, Missouri, two sons, Warren H. of Neptune, New Jersey
and Veldon Orson of Placenta,
California.
Also one sister, Mrs. Clara Vird Cochran of Milan,
Missouri and six grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held at 10 am Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the Davelle Funeral Home in Clarinda at 10 a.m., with. Rev. Cecil Latta officiating.
Services
were held that afternoon at 2 p.m. from the United Methodist Church in Lenox
with Rev. Floyd Newbrough and Dr. J. D. Almes officiating.
Music
was furnished by Billie Jean Barker and Mrs. Helen Brokaw with Mrs. Norma Paymal, organist.
Bearers
were Melvin Williams, Ronald Wurster, Glen Williams,
Raymond Dill, Dwaine Boyer and Donald Beck.
Burial
was in Blue Grove cemetery near Lenox.

Davis, Otto Marion
(Shorty) -
Otto
Marion (Shorty) Davis, a long-time resident of the Lenox area, died December
2nd, 1971 at Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa. He had entered the hospital Nov.
29th for
tests
and treatment of his lengthy affliction, emphysema, seemed to be improving when
suddenly taken much worse and all help seemed to be of no avail.
"Shorty",
as he was more commonly known in the Lenox vicinity, was born at Hayes, now
Lincoln Center in Adams County, Iowa, Dec. 26, 1901, the son of Steve and Abbie Schooling
Davis.
He attended rural school near his farm home until his father's death, then at
an early age made a home for his mother.
He
was an industrious man, honest in all his dealings and respected by everyone.
He
moved to the farm five miles west of Lenox in January, 1930, and continued
farming there until illness forced him to retire in 1968 on the same farm.
Preceding
him in death were his father, mother and two brothers.
Survivors
are an only sister, Mrs. Effie Nevius of Danville, Ill., two nieces and their
families, Mrs. Helen Hansen of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. Kathryn Good, Evergreen
Park, Ill.
Mr.
Davis was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lenox, Iowa.
Services
were conducted Friday, Dec. 10th from the church by Rev. Fr. Reginald Maslinski.
Burial
was in North Fairview cemetery at Lenox with close friends, Walt Hill, Tip
Lucas, Leo Bridgeman, Lloyd Leonard, Leland Wurster and Roy Maeder as pallbearers.
Music
was furnished by Mrs Lonnie Barker and Mrs. Paul
Brokaw with Miss Rosemary Bradley, pianist.

Freshour, Ivan Ellsworth -
Ivan
Ellsworth, son of Charles and Emma Freshour, was born
Nov. 13, 1891 in Adams County, Iowa, and passed away at the Rosary hospital in
Corning at the age of 80 years
and
28 days.
He
was a brother of Mrs. Reva Martin of Lenox. He
devoted his life to farming and spent his entire life in the Corning community
except for a few years which were spent in Falls City, Nebr. He was a member of
the First Baptist Church in Corning.
He
is survived by his wife, Fannie, two brothers, Warren of Carbon, Delmar of
Corning, and one sister, Reva Martin of Lenox, a
step-daughter, Georgia, 9 step grandchildren of Omaha, and 13 great
grandchildren. The step grandson Darrill Van Winkle
of Cedar Rapids had made his home with him. He is also survived by several
nieces and
nephews
and a host of friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Nate, Boyd and Melvin,
two sisters, Elva Means and Ada Winstone and a step son, Orville DeLong.
He will be greatly missed by all.

Hanne, Sophia Bethke Boltinghouse -
Sophia Boltinghouse Hanne, daughter of Ludwig Louis and
Bertha Bethke, died November 16, 1971 at Lumberton,
Mississippi at the age of 85. She was born in Pestchigo,
Wisconsin on October 31, 1886.
She
was united in marriage to Charles T. Boltinghouse in Edgeby, North Dakota, on Jan. 18, 1906. Two children were
born to this union, Evelyn Merle and Thelma Fern.
The
family moved to Lenox, Iowa in 1913. They were united with the Christian Church
in Lenox.
Mr. Boltinghouse died Feb. 29, 1944. She moved from the Lenox
area soon after her husband's death and resided with her daughters for several
years.
She
was united in marriage to Wm. Hanne November, 1949. They made their home in
Bettendorf, Iowa until his death in May, 1968.
She
leaves to mourn her death, two daughters, Evelyn Caskey,
Omaha, Nebr., Thelma Davis and son-in-law, Frank E. Davis of Lumberton, Miss.,
three sisters, Marie Reynolds, Chula
Vista,
Calif., Clara Railing, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Alice Soulsby of Stanford, Montana, sisters-in-law, Bertha Carter, Eva Armstrong and Ethel
Bryant, plus many other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, Nov. 20, 1971 at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox,
with Rev. Donald Briley, pastor of the Christian
Church officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mrs. Richard Walter.
Bearers
were Tip Lucas, Dwain Boyer, Delbert Routh, W. Ernest
Bryant, Roland Boltinghouse and Kenneth Boltinghouse.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Harvey, Robert -
Robert
Harvey, 86, long-time resident of this area, died Nov. 18, 1971 at Greater
Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa after a long illness.
Robert
Harvey, son of Joseph and Mary Hannah Harvey, was born on a farm near Blockton, Iowa, October 18, 1885. In his youth he became a
member of the Christian Church of Blockton where his
membership remained.
As a
young man, Mr. Harvey spent six years in military service, serving a term in
the Philipines and as a trumpeter for his regiment.
After his discharge from military service, he farmed in Colorado, Arkansas and
Iowa. In 1943 he retired from farming and moved to Lenox, where he resided until
his death.
On
September 8, 1910, he was united in marriage to Vera Rush who survives him.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. LeRoy Helm of
Des Moines, Thelma and Jean Harvey of Lenox, and Mrs. Robert Barber of Neenah, Wisconsin,
six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and one grandson.
Mr.
Harvey had a special fondness for young people and was never happier than when
surrounded by young friends & relatives. During his retirement, he
maintained a special
interest
in the children of his neighborhood, travel, extensive home projects and
intense enjoyment of his musical instruments.
Funeral
services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 21st at 2 pm from the Bender Funeral Home
with Rev. Don Briley, pastor of the Lenox Christian
Church officiating.
Bearers
were Dale Riley, Lloyd Wood, Carl Spring, Wilbur Rong,
Kenneth Riley and Charles Brown.
Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Joe
Lewis, 79, a long-time resident of the Lenox community, died at his farm home
west of town Monday afternoon.
Mr.
Lewis is survived by his widow, Nellie, a daughter, Mrs. Earl Lillie of Lenox,
two sons, Arthur of Des Moines and Earl of Creston and several grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, December 22nd at the Christian Church with Rev.
Don Briley officiating.
Music
was furnished by Gwen Maynes, Bonnie Schrader and
Ruth Boltinghouse.
Bearers
were Ray Lewis, Paul Lewis, Glenn Lewis, Michael Lillie, Melvin Strait and
Kenneth Boltinghouse.

Bernice Louise Johnson -
Mrs.
Bernice Madden, 63, of Lenox, died Monday afternoon at Rosary hospital in
Corning. She had been hospitalized a month with an extended illness.
Survivors
include a daughter, Mrs. Duane (Sharon) Raitt of
Salina, Kansas, three grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Lurene Slater of Gibbon, Nebr., Mrs. Frances Clark and Mrs. Jennie Brand of Creston, a
brother Clare nee Johnson of Kent and a host of friends in the Lenox area.
Her
husband, Roy, died several years ago.
Funeral
services will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at the United Presbyterian
Church in Lenox at 2 p.m. Rev. Wallace Nelson will officiate.
Burial
will be in the: Lenox cemetery.
A
memorial for the cancer fund has been established in lieu of flowers.

Madden, Bernice Louise Johnson -
Bernice
Louise Johnson, the daughter of Nels and Minnie
Johnson, was born on a farm east of Lenox, Oct. 28, 1908. She attended school
in Ringgold County.
On
March 10, 1928 she was united in marriage to Roy Madden. To this union one daughter
was born, Sharon (Mrs. Duane Raitt).
She
and her husband lived on a farm east of Kent for ten years. Then they bought a
farm south of Kent on Highway 25 where they lived for 24 years.
On
August 10, 1964 they purchased a home in Lenox at 301 West
Temple. Her husband died on Dec. 17th, 1964.
She
was united with the United Presbyterian Church of Prairie Star in 1956 and was
a member of the Prairie Star Ladies Aid until after she moved to Lenox, where
she started
working
at the Lenox Cafe and the White Way Cafe.
She
leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Mrs. Duane Raitt and 3 grandchildren, sisters, Mrs. Ross Slater of Gibbon, Nebr., Mrs. Irean Clark and Mrs. Jennie Brand of Creston, and one
brother. Clarence of Kent.
Her
father, mother two half sisters and two half brothers and one sister, Marie Adkisson, preceded her in death.
Funeral
services were conduced Wednesday afternoon at the United Presbyterian Church in
Lenox at 2 p.m., with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Matya, Bernadine O'Connell -
Bernadine
O'Connell Matya, only daughter of Homer and Nellie
Lucas O'Connell, was born April twenty eighth in Taylor County, Iowa, and
passed away Nov. 14, 1971 at the Rosary hospital in Corning, Iowa.
She
graduated from the Corning high school in 1952 and started work in June at the
North Side Bank in Omaha, Nebraska making her home with the Vincent Miller
family.
On
Nov. 7, 1953, she was married to Thomas E. Matya and
lived in Omaha until June 1964 when they moved to their present home nine miles
south of Corning.
They
were blessed with five children, Timothy, Kathleen, Nancy, Maureen and Mary
Michelle.
Bernadine
was a member of the St. Patrick Altar Society.
She
is survived by her husband and five children, her mother and father, aunts,
uncles, and cousins and many friends. She was proud of her family and loved
them very much. She
was
always ready and willing to help anyone who needed help.
Funeral
services were held at the St. Patrick Church in Corning, Iowa, November 17, at
10:00 a.m. conducted by Father Lloyd Connolly, assisted by Rev. Guy O'Donovan
and Rev.
David
Cuttings of Mt. Michael High school, Elkhorn, Nebr.
Mrs.
William Kelly was organist and Mrs. John Cruise vocalist.
Mass
servers were Jim Swain, Tim Leonard and Charles Lenz. Jim Swain also served as
lector. Pallbearers were Arnold Leonard, Harold Leonard, Gerald Straight,
Louis, Kenneth, W R Ryan, Jr. II and Don Hefflefinger.
Interment
was in Calvary cemetery.

Neuhardt, Fern Noble -
Mrs.
Fern Neuhardt, 86, died at the Lenox Nursing home
early Wednesday morning, Dec 29, 1971 after a short illness.
Mrs. Neuhardt was born Feb. 27, 1885 on a farm three miles
north of Lenox and with the exception of a few years in her early life, she
lived in the Lenox and Sharpsburg communities all her life.
She
was the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Thomas Noble.
On
Dec. 19, 1904, she was married to William Neuhardt of
Morton, Ill., and shortly thereafter moved back to the farm near Lenox where
she was born.
She
was a lifetime member of the Lenox Christian Church.
She
is survived by two sons Joe and Tom of Lenox, two daughters, Leota Steele of Wichita, Kansas and Reva Cline of San Leandro, California, 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren
and
a sister, Ruthe Noble of Muscatine, Iowa.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, William, her parents, a sister and two
grandchildren.
Services
were held at two o'clock Friday afternoon, Dec. 31, 1971 at the Bender Funeral
Home in Lenox with Rev. Wallace Nelson, pastor of the United Presbyterian
Church, officiating.
Bearers
were Harold Rundlett, Cleo Stoaks,
James Shawler, Paul Chitty, Kenneth Brand and Bill
Beach.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Melody
Jean Ray, 7 month, 1 day old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Ray, Jr., died last
week at Rosary hospital in Corning.
Survivors
besides her parents include two sisters, Tammy, 9, and Brenda, 6. Grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur King of Corning. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Ray, sr., of
Creston and great grandparents surviving include Mr. and Mrs. Willard Piercy of Corning and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Moore of Blair,
Nebr., also Ross King of Brooks, Iowa.
Services
were held Saturday, Dec. 11th at Roland Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. Don Briley, pastor of the Lenox Christian Church, officiating.
Burial was at Oak Hill cemetery.

William Harold (Shorty) -
Harold
"Shorty" Roll, 71, long time resident of this area, died suddenly
November 25, 1971, at the Lenox Nursing Home.
William
Harold, son of Andrew M. and Myrtle Alexander Roll, was born in Red Oak, Ia February 10, 1900. He moved to the Lenox area at
the age of six to live with his aunt and
uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Higgins.
As a
young man, Mr. Roll worked at various jobs in the community and later operated
a shoe repair and harness business in Lenox. He also helped with janitorial
work in the Lenox
Public
schools. During the time he spent the summers traveling with the Sun Players
tent show where he made a number of lasting friendships.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle and a half-sister.
Mrs. Mae Wallin.
He
is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Roll of Lenox
and a nephew, James A. Roll and family of Libertyville, Ill., as well as many
friends.
Funeral
services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 27th at 2 p.m. from the Bender Funeral
Home with Rev. Wallace Nelson pastor of the United Presbyterian Church,
officiating.
Bearers
were Eldon Jones, Marvin Reed, Pearl Reynolds, Claude Reynolds, Myrle Henderson and William Browning.

Shawler, Glenn -
Glenn Shawler, 69, of Denver, Colorado, died in that city
Jan. 6th following a gradual decline in health.
He
was a brother of Bert Shawler of Lenox, Don of
Creston, Beryl of Des Moines, Gail of Denver, and a sister, Reva Kipperger of Afton.
Funeral
services were held Saturday. The three brothers and sister from this area
attended the final rites.
Mr. Shawler will be remembered by many here, having been raised
about six miles east of Lenox.

Elizabeth
Tyler, 61, a former resident of Lenox, died Monday at Woodward state hospital
in Woodward, Iowa.
Born
Jan. 22, 1910, in Lenox, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. O. D.
Tyler.
She
is survived by a brother, Donald of Lenox and two sisters Mrs. Roy (Helen)
George of Santa Anna, Calif., and Mrs. Alvin (Geneva) Drumm of Orange, Calif. A brother, Hugh,
preceded
her in death. She was a member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 15th at 10:30 a.m. from the Bender
Funeral Home with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Bearers
were Don Tyler, Phil Tyler, Paul Tyler, Dale Eklund,
Winston Tyler and Dr. Allen Tyler.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Weed,
Marla Mae -
A
fire which gutted the interior of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marven Weed Dec. 15th, claimed the life of their daughter, Maria, a three year old.
Mr.
Weed is deputy sheriff of Taylor County and the family at one time lived in
Lenox.
Marla
Mae Weed, daughter of Marven and Glenna Weed, was
born April 18, 1968, in Corning, Iowa.
Survivors
include her mother Glenna and father, Marven, 3
brothers, Donnie, Lonnie and Kenny, three sisters, Cindy, Kathy and Shellie,
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Weed
of
Orient, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Lock of Gravity, great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Lock of Gravity, Wilbur Fudge of Corning and Rev. A. R. Weed of Fontanelle. Also 27 aunts and
uncles,
numerous cousins and friends.
She
enjoyed and attended Sunday School at the Gravity United Methodist Church. Her most
enjoyable moments were spent playing with her friends in the city park.
Her
black, sparkling eyes and high spirits will always be a rewarding remembrance
to her family.
Marla
was preceded in death by two great grandmothers, Mrs. Wilbur Fudge and Mrs. A.
R. Weed.
She
was baptized into the Christian faith by her great grandfather, Rev. A. R. Weed
on May 12, 1968.
Services
were conducted at the Methodist Church in Gravity Saturday.
Marla
was laid to rest in Washington cemetery in Gravity.
Since
the fire, numerous clothing and furniture contributions by organizations and
friends have provided sufficient clothing and furnishings for the family. Quite
a large sum
of
money has also been raised to the Weeds in their time of need.

Wurster, Clara Charlotte -
Clara Wurster, 79, died at the Lenox Nursing Home Friday,
Nov. 19th, 1971.
Clara
Charlotte Wurster, daughter of Christian and
Katherine Haering Wurster, was
born on a farm 2 miles west of Lenox, Iowa, June 7, 1892 and died at the age of
79
years,
5 months and 12 days.
She
spent the early years of her life on the farm until 1914 at which time she
moved with her parents to Creston, Iowa, and continued to live in the same home
until she was unable
to
care for herself because of failing health. She entered the Lenox Rest Home in
April, where she remained a very uncomplaining patient through her long
suffering.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Pauline Troemel and one brother, John.
She
is survived by one sister, Anna Milliken, two brothers, William and Sam, all of
Lenox, also several nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. She
will be greatly
missed
by all.
Funeral
services were held from the Bender Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Sunday, November
21st, with Rev. Wallace Nelson, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church
officiating.
Bearers
were Clyde Belding, Marvin Coffey, Russell Wurster,
Clarence Olson, Clarence Haering and Leland Wurster.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
