Caldwell, Ruby Fay Hammett -

Ruby Fay Caldwell, the daughter of Horace T. and Aurie May Burchett Hammett, was born March 29, 1896 at

Eldorado Springs, Missouri. She died Monday evening, October 18 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home at eighty-six

years of age.

She was married to Charles B. Caldwell on October 27, 1919 in Eldorado Springs.

Preceding her in death were her husband on January 11, 1936, her parents, a brother and a sister.

Survivors include a son, Charles R. Caldwell of Longmont, Colorado; three daughters, Mrs. Edward D. (Maxine)

Ethington of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Mrs. Georgia Reimer of Tucson, Arizona, and Mrs. Clifford (June) Bush of Omaha,

Nebraska; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, D.M. Hammett of Klamath Falls, Oregon; five

sisters, Mrs. Nellie Wood of Corvallis, Oregon, Mrs. Ida Anderson of Loma Linda, California, Mrs. Effie Hartwig of

Hemet, California, Mrs. Jewell Thompson, Emma Ewing, both of Nevada, Missouri.

Services were held Friday October 22 at Hazel Dell Baptist Church in Eldorado Springs. Mrs. James Hudson served as pianist.

Casket hearers were George Moore, Ithel Darnell, Eldon Teague, Virgil Caldwell, Dan Caldwell and Dennis Caldwell.

Interment was in the Hazel Dell Cemetery.

Callahan, Kathleen -

Kathleen Callahan. the infant daughter of Kevin and Karen Jane Callahan, died Thursday morning, September 16 at

Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. Kansas. She was born just prior to midnight on September 15.

Survivors are her parents of Route I, Linwood. Kansas; grandparents. Dr. and Mrs G.K. Howland and Mr. and

Mrs. Bob Callahan, all of Lenox; two great grandmothers, Mrs. Iona Howland and Mrs. Lottie Gray, both of Lenox.

Graveside services were held Friday. September 17 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Kansas. The

Reverend Charles McGinn officiated.

Warren-McElwain Mortuary of Lawrence was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established to the Taylor County ARC. Donations should be sent to Ruth Sundell of Sharpsburg.

Cochran, Harry E -

Funeral services for Harry E. Cochran, 81, was held at the graveside in Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on

September 27. Reverend Gilbert McCurdy, chaplin, officiated.

Mr. Cochran died Friday, September 24 at the V.A. Medical Center.

He was born April 25, 1901 in Taylor County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Eleanor Turner Cochran. He was a World War 1

veteran, serving in the Army from March 1, 1918 to May 2 1919.

He is survived by two brothers, John A. of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Glen of Salem, Oregon; three sisters, Effie

Black and Ruth Beemer, both of Lenox, and Florence McKelvey of Monroe, Michigan; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

Fleming, Alma Lydia Stanger -

Alma Lydia Fleming, the daughter of Daniel and Katherina Haering Stanger, was born December 20, 1903 near Lenox,

Iowa. She died at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Monday, November 8 at the age of

seventy-eight years, ten months and eighteen days.

Alma attended Grove School #6 and was a member of the Blue Grove Christian Church. She later transferred her

membership to the United Methodist Church in Lenox.

On January 6, 1929, she was united in marriage with Marvin Fleming at Lenox.

Preceding her in death were her husband in November of 1950, her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Robert and wife, Mary Ann of Des Moines; two daughters, Joan Thompson and husband,

Vernal of Lenox and Leota DeVoe and husband, Doyle of Bedford, Iowa: eleven grandchildren, Joe, Sue, David, and

Karen Fleming, Rick Thompson and wife, Genelle, Gary Thompson and wife, Lynne, Cheryl Murphy and husband, Jim,

Steve DeVoe, and wife, Chris, Sandy Piercy and husband, G.L., and Mike and Ken DeVoe; five great grandchildren;

a brother, Frank Stanger and wife, Martha of Lenox; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services were held Thursday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with Reverend Lester

Hesseltine officiating.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists. The selection was "In the

Garden". The congregational hymn was "The Old Rugged Cross".

Casket bearers were Joe Fleming, David Fleming, Steve DeVoe, Mike DeVoe, Ken DeVoe, Gary Thompson, and

Rick Thompson.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Gaines, Daisy Irene Shively -

Daisy Irene Gaines, the fourth child of John Wesley and Adda Arminta Karns Shively, was born in a little town of Breckenridge,

Missouri February 4, 1888; and passed away at the Care Center in Lenox, September 26, 1982 at the age of ninety-four years,

seven months and twenty-two days.

She attended country schools in Daviess and Caldwell counties in Missouri. She was always active and sometimes got into mischief,

but did graduate from high school with top honors.

November 4, 1908 she was married to Ralph D. Gaines. One son was born to this union December 30, 1912. He died

October 6, 1913.

Ralph and Daisy were honored to spend better than 59 years of married life together before he was called to his

Heavenly Home January 17, 1968. Since that, Daisy has struggled alone, doing the best she could, waiting that day they

will all be together again.

She is survived by a sister, Nellie L. Duncan of Cleveland, Missouri; a brother, W.R. "Bill" Shively of Braymer, Missouri;

nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a host of friends.

The funeral was Wednesday, September 29 at the graveside, the Reverend Lester Hesseltine officiating with interment in the

West Fairview Cemetery.

Casket bearers were George Sweeney, Glenn Norton, Marvin Routh, Roger James, Robert Rhoades and Richard Notz.

Hockett, H Max -

H. Max Hockett, son of Vinton S, and Lydia Hodgell Hockett, was born May 18, 1902 in Clarinda and died on October

22, 1982 very suddenly in Creston, Iowa at the age of ninety years, five months and four days.

Max moved with his family when he was a small boy, to the Carl Community in Adams County, where he attend school

and grew to manhood. March 4, 1928 he was married to Fay Rogers at the farm home north of Lenox, They were the

parents of two sons, Harlan and Dan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Inez Hockett, who raised him from five years on; and a

brother, William A. Hockett.

Those surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Faye of Lenox; two sons, Max "Harlan" Hockett and Dan Hockett, both

of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Jeffrey V.S., Matthew C.S., Danny, Amy and Jennifer. Also surviving are three sisters,

Helen Hawley of Clarinda, Ruth McLin of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Eleanor Brown of Overland Park, Kansas; other relatives

and many friends.

Max was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, a fifty-year member of the Lenox Masonic Lodge and of

the Stock and Saddle Club. He was president of the Adams Mutual Insurance Company in Corning. He and Faye had

farmed north of Lenox since their marriage until retiring, and then moving to their home in town.

Services were held Tuesday, October 26 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with the Reverend Don Fisher

officiating.

Casket bearers were Robert Morris, Howard Rogers, Louis Brown, Glen Vogel, John Hunt and George Donaldson.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal, organist, Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists.

Interment was in the Carl Cemetery, Carl, Iowa.

Jackson, Holly Jo -

Holly Jo Jackson, infant daughter of Daisy Jackson and Arturo Hernandes, both of Lenox, died Monday, November

8 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr on

Saturday, November 6 and was transferred by Life Flight to Des Moines.

Reverend Lester Hesseltine will officiate at the 3 p.m. graveside services in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox on

Wednesday, November 10.

Nelson, Dustin Lyle -

Seven year old Dustin Lyle Nelson of Creston died Tuesday afternoon September 28 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des

Moines from injuries received in a car and bicycle accident in Creston Monday.

His funeral was Saturday at the Larkin and Gauthier Chapel in Creston, the Reverent Robert Pickerell officiating.  Burial was in

Graceland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Blank Memorial Children's Hospital or Life Flight.

The son of Gary Eugene and Karolyn (Miller) Nelson, he was born February 18, 1975 in Corning.  He was a first grader at Lincoln

School.

Survivors are his parents; a brother, Mike, of the home; grandparents. Edwin and Marlene Miller of Sharpsburg, Lyle

and Irene Nelson of Lenox, and Esther Miller of Bedford; great grandparents are Elsie Miller and Ethel Nelson, both of

Lenox; seven uncles, seven aunts and 10 cousins.

Nelson, Dustin Lyle -

Dustin Lyle Nelson, the son of Gary Eugene and Karolyn Esther Miller Nelson, was born at Rosary Hospital in Corning,

Iowa on February 18, 1975. He died at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, September 29 at

the age of seven years, seven months and eleven days.

 "Dusty" was a first grader at Lincoln School in Creston. He had "Chroins" disease and sometimes suffered from its

effects. He knew confinement and enjoyed it when he could be outdoors playing.

Survivors include his parents, Gary and Karolyn; a brother, Mike of the home in Creston; his grandparents, Lyle and Irene

Nelson of Lenox, Edwin and Marlene Miller of Sharpsburg and Esther Miller of Bedford; two great grandmothers, Elsie

Miller and Ethel Nelson, both of Lenox; aunts and uncles, Darrel and Karen Miller of Pacific Junction, Joyce and Bruce

Majors, Janice Ambrose, all of Bedford, Richard Miller of Des Moines, Karen Miller of Maryville, Missouri, Lori and

Chad Beemer of Bedford, Brian Seil of Council Bluffs, Dennis and Charme Nelson of Lenox, and Marcia and Richard Kozeliski

of Des Moines; ten cousins; other relatives; and many friends of all ages.

Services were held Saturday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Creston, Iowa. Reverend

Robert Pickerel!, pastor of the Creston First Christian Church officiated.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists. The selections were "How

Great Thou Art" and "The Twenty-third Psalm".

Casket bearers were Darrel Miller, Richard Miller, Richard Kozeliski, Dennis Nelson, Don Starlin, and Mike Baker.

Honorary bearers were the Lincoln First Grade. Bob Strange, Chet Larson, Troy Cordell, Cody Starlin, Jerry Smith,

Mae Cornelison, Steve Williamson, Rodney West, Mark Shepherd and Wade Starlin.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Creston.

Richardson, Clarence William -

Clarence William Richardson, minister at the United Methodist Church in Lenox from 1946-1950, died Thursday, August

5 at the Sunset Nursing Home in Park Rapids, Minnesota. He was born in a farm house near Beverly, Illinois on May 30, 1905.

Clarence graduated from John Fletcher Academy in 1927 and from college in 1932.

Following his marriage to Louise Orf on January 1, 1935, he entered Garrett Biblical Institute, graduating from there

in 1937.

He served parishes in Iowa before entering military service in 1944 from the Methodist Church at Burlington, Iowa.

Reverend Richardson was a chaplain stationed in New Guinea and in the Philippines. He was discharged in 1946.

His church appointments in addition to Lenox included Fargo, North Dakota, 1950-52; Bemidji, Minnesota. 1952-57;

Arlington Hills UMC, St. Paul, Minnesota. 1957-64; and the Richfield UMC, Richfield, Minnesota, 1970-74.

In 1964. Reverend Richardson was appointed Superintendent of the Northwest District and resided in Detroit Lakes and

Wadena. He moved to a lake home on Portage Lake near Park Rapids when he retired in 1974.

Preceding him in death were his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Richardson.

Survivors include his wife, Louise: two sons, Robert H. of Milwaukee, Oregon and David W. of Oakland, California; four

grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Chris, and William; two sisters, Marie of Tucson, Arizona and Patricia of Zionsville, Indiana;

two brothers, Donald of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Bert of Torrance, California, plus nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Fort Snelling Military Cemetery on Monday, August 9, followed by a memorial service at Richfield

United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.

Shawler, James Lester -

James Lester Shawler, the son of James Oliver and Sallie Eveline Chaney Shawler, was born March 29, 1912 at Council

Bluffs, Iowa. He died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, November 1 at the age of seventy

years, seven months and two days.

He moved with his family to Clearfield, Iowa at the age of 16 and graduated from high school there in 1929.

On September 3, 1938, he was united in marriage with Iva I. Young.

James lived and farmed in the Lenox area until his retirement.  He also drove a bus for the Lenox Community Schools for

many years and more recently drove the Senior Citizen Bus.

He served the community as a Zoning Commissioner, a Township Trustee and was a member of the Election Board for many

years. He also served on the Advisory Council for the Area Agency on Aging.

Mr Shawler's greatest enjoyment was visiting with and helping his family and friends. He will be missed by all whose

lives he touched.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, Larry in 1960; a brother, Orville; and a sister in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Iva of Lenox; two daughters, Farene Rose and husband, Calvin, of Omaha, Nebraska and Lynette

Kraus and husband, James, of Wales, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Jessica Rose and Kyle Kraus; a sister, Pearl Barngrover

of Colorado Springs, Colorado two brothers, Bryan of San Raphael, California and Robert of Petaluma, California; as well

as other relatives.

Services were held Thursday, November 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Pastor Jack Cutbirth

officiated.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Nick Evans and Mark Rose, vocalists. The selections were "In The Garden"

and "The Church in The Wildwood".

Casket bearers were Bob Brown, Darrell Brown, Kenny Black, Bill Wheatley, Bud Carey and Don Shawler.

Honorary bearers were H. Norton, Ed Richey, Bert Shawler, Kenny Schaffer, Alfred Adolphson, and George Jones.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Stephens, Milton Hugh -

Milton Hugh Stephens, son of James E. and Mary Jane Mullen Stephens was born September 3, 1891 near Cromwell, Iowa.

He passed away at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Illinois October 13, 1982 at the age of ninety-one years, one

month and ten days.

Hugh attended school in Lenox, and graduated from the High School in 1909. He went on to Simpson College and graduated

from there in 1913. He was first employed as a teacher in Farmer City, Illinois.

During World War I, Hugh spent ten months in the Army, serving in France. After his tour of duty, he returned to

teach in the Creston public schools. While in Creston he also served as coach, principal and superintendent.

On June 7, 1922, he was married to Goldie Barnes in Lenox. The couple lived on a farm in this area until 1929, when they

moved to Peoria, Illinois. Hugh taught school in Peoria until 1945. He also obtained his M.A. Degree from the University of

Iowa. From Peoria the couple moved to Sheldon, Wisconsin, where they farmed until 1956 when they retired. In retirement,

Hugh spent many months compiling his mother's family history and sharing it with the rest of the family. He also enjoyed

teaching crippled children to read and was an active member in the Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife Goldie; two sons, James E Stephens of Decatur, Illinois and Russel Stephens of Sheldon,

Wisconsin. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael Hugh Stephens, Daniel Jesse Stephens, Robert Stephens,

Mrs. Kathy Hammond and Kendal Stephens; also three great grandchildren, Randal Stephens, Ryan Stephens and

Matthew Elliott Stephens.

Services were held Saturday, October 16 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiating. Casket

bearers were Harold Carey, Lew Eckels, Paul Brokaw, Bob Reynolds, George Reynolds and Richard Brammer.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalist.

Interment was in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox,

Warner, Leola Belle Speer -

Leola Belle Warner, daughter of George and Mary O. Martin Speer, was born April 20, 1893 at Coin, Iowa. She

entered into rest at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr, September 26, 1982 at the age of eighty-nine years, five

months and six days.

Leola was married to Marcellus Warner. They were parents of four daughters, Avis, Phyllis, Wilda and Norma.

They were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary before his death September 29, 1974. Leola was

the last member of her family, having been preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, one sister, and by two of her

daughters, Wilda Valentine and Norma Clement.

Leola and Mark lived all of their lives in southwest Iowa and had moved to Lenox to make their home in May of 1958. She

will be remembered as a good neighbor and a friend by many, including the staff of the Clearview Home where she

has lived since September of 1974.

Those surviving to honor her memory are her two daughters, Avis Kahler of Yucaipa, California, and Phyllis Hester and her

husband. Robert G. of Pearblossom, California. Also surviving are five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren;

other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were Wednesday, September 29 at West Fairview Cemetery, Reverend Lester Hesseltine officiating.

Wells, Bessie Grace Stoner -

Bessie Grace Stoner, daughter of Henry Augusta and Jane Fisher Cameron Stoner, was born in Adams County, three

miles north of Lenox January 10, 1894. She died at her home in Pasadena, California September 1, 1982.

Bessie became a member of the Presbyterian Church in her youth. She attended the country school near her home and Lenox

High School. On October 8, 1915, she was married to Clinton Wells of Lenox. They were parents of one son, Clinton B.

After her marriage she lived in Des Moines for a number of years after which the family moved to California where she

sold real estate.

Funeral services were conducted September 7 with burial in the Live Oak Memorial Park, Monrovia. California.

Preceding her in death were her parents, all of her sisters and brothers, also her son in 1958 and her husband in 1968.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Elva Asper of San Marcos. California, nieces and nephews. Nieces in this vicinity

are Beatrice Walter and Florence Lucas.

Wyant, Glenna Mae Wood -

Glenna Mae Wyant, the oldest daughter of P.D. and Minnie Alice Cochran Wood, was born November 25, 1895 in Taylor County,

Iowa. She died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning on Sunday, August 29 at the age of eighty-six years, nine months and four days.

Glenna was united in marriage with Hugh B. Wyant on February 24, 1915 at Clearfield, Iowa. She was a rural school teacher in

Ringgold County before her marriage. Hugh and Glenna celebrated 61 years of married life. They farmed in the Clearfield, Lenox,

and Leon areas until retiring in Lenox in 1959.

Glenna was a member of the Methodist Church before her marriage. She later transferred her membership to the United

Presbyterian Churches at Clearfield and Lenox.

Her grandchildren will always cherish the memory of their grandmother preparing delicious goodies for them in her kitchen. This brought her one of her greatest joys as Glenna's home and family were near to her heart.

Preceding her in death were her husband on March 15, 1976, her parents, a sister, Elsie Wilson and her husband, Paul; a brother,

LBanks Wood; a brother-in-law, Mae Bentley; and an infant daughter, Glenda Sue Walter.

Survivors include her daughter, Juanita Walter and husband, Glendon of Prescott; a grandson, Mervin Walter and wife, Nancy of Prescott; a granddaughter, Corene Boltinghouse and husband, Reldon of Lenox; six grandchildren, Cindy Jackson and husband, Mike of

Lenox, Michael and Mark Walter of Prescott and Holly, Royce and Nicki Boltinghouse of Lenox; a sister, Mary Bentley of Lenox; a brother, Donald Wood and his wife, Muriel of Bedford; a sister-in-law, Velma Wood of Waverly; as well as other relatives.

Services were held Tuesday, August 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Reverend Don Fisher of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church and Reverend Elmer West of the Salem Church of the Brethren officiated.

Roberta Lockhart was the organist. Selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer".

Casket bearers were Michael Walter, Mervin Walter, Mark Walter, Reldon Boltinghouse, Royce Boltinghouse, and Mike

Jackson.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Wynn, Hazel L Bruington -

Hazel L. Wynn, 83, died following a brief illness at the Vista Gardens Nursing Home in Red Oak on August 23.

She was born October 7, 1898 in Lenox, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Carrie Bruington.

On October 12, 1921, Hazel was married in Lenox, Iowa to Jesse Wynn who died December 28, 1972.

Hazel was raised in Lenox, Iowa and lived in Red Oak from 1941 to 1952 when she moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. She

moved back to Red Oak from Council Bluffs in 1973.

Survivors include one son, Bob Wynn of Murray, Kentucky; two daughters, Mrs. William (Doris) Fort of Red Oak

and Mrs. Keith (Berniece) Carlson of Essex, Iowa; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak and spent her adult life as a housewife and mother.

Services were conducted at the First Christian Church Red Oak on Thursday, August 26 at 1:30 p.m. with the

Reverend Byron Paxton officiating.

Sellergren-Lindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

A memorial fund has been established at the First Christian Church in Red Oak.
