Butler, Nelle Grace Wilson -

Mrs. Nelle Butler, a long-time resident of the Lenox community died Thursday, June 26th, while cleaning debris from her yard following Thursday's storm.

Nelle Grace Wilson, daughter of Frank Ernest and Bessie Wilson was born July 8, 1887 at Greenfield, Iowa and departed this life June 26, 1969 at the age

of 81 years, 11 months and 18 days.

She was united in marriage to Byron Butler December 20, 1916. To this union was born one daughter, Hazel.

Their married life was spent farming, moving to the farm south of town in 1920 where they lived until Byron's death in 1939. After Mr. Butler's death

Nelle moved to Lenox, spending the last 30 years here.

Mrs. Butler was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lenox for 68 years, an active member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and of the

Lenox Women's Christian Temperence Union.  She seldom missed a Sunday School or Church service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, and two brothers.

Leaving to mourn her departure is her daughter, Hazel, two brothers, Bert of Red Oak and Fred of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, one sister, Bertha Maharry of

Lenox and a sister-in-law, Adah Butler of Lenox.  Besides the relatives there are Mr and Mrs Melvin Wurster of Mt Ayr and Mr and Mrs Adolph Mattes of Bedford who always called her Grandmother.

She was active in her home and in her church until the very end and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the United Methodist Church in Lenox at 2 p m with Rev Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Marilyn Beck, Billie Jean Barker and Norma Paymal.

Bearers were Don Beck, Roy Beck, Duane Beck, William Harover, James Hughes and Melvin Wurster.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Calkin, Corrine Reynolds -

Corrine Calkin, daughter of Guy and Bessie Hughes Reynolds was born December 22, 1916 in Adams County, Iowa, and deported this life at the George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D. C., July 9, 1969, at the age of 52 years, 6 months and 18 days. Death came as a result of a long illness which had led to kidney failure.

She grew to womanhood in the Clearfield community, attending the Clearfield High School and the State University of Iowa.

On June 2, 1938, she was married to Homer L. Calkin. In 1942 she moved with her husband to Arlington, Virginia where she had made her home until her death.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her father and step-mother, Guy and Jessie Reynolds of Clearfield, a brother, Merrill of Boulder, Colorado, a foster child, Peppino in Naples, Italy, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

She was always active in church and civic work. She joined the Clearfield Methodist Church at an early age, transferring her membership to the Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, D. C. when she moved to that area. She was a member of the Foundry Woman Society of Christian Service in which she held numerous

offices had represented her church as a lay member of the Baltimore Annual Conference of the Methodist Church for a number of years. She was also active in the Wesleyan Theological Seminary Guild and other Methodist organizations in the Washington area and the YMCA Wives Club of the District of Columbia.

Memorial services were held at the Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, D C on July 11, 1969.  Final rites were held at the Clearfield Methodist Church at 2 p.m. July 14, 1969 with Rev Edward Tschetter officiating.  Interment was in Clearfield cemetery.

Cottrell, Luella Beach -

Mrs Luella Cottrell, 85, a longtime resident of the Lenox vicinity, died Sunday at the Pearl Terrace nursing home in Bedford.

Mrs Cottrell was the daughter of Mr and Mrs George Beach, and was born on a farm southwest of Lenox.  She and her husband, Jim, farmer between Lenox and Clearfield for many years.  Following his death in 1940, she spent some time in Portland, Oregon and San Diego, Cal. before returning to Lenox.  She had suffered a broken hip before going to the nursing home.

Mrs Cottrell was a 50 year member of Salome Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Lenox, and a member of the Calvary Church east of Lenox.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs C D Hetz of San Diego, Calif. and a sister-in-law, Mrs Eula Beach of Lenox.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Wednesday morning, July 16th at 10 o'clock, Rev Donald Briley, officiating.

Bearers were George Jones, Bill Beach, Julian Walter, James Shawler, Wesley Cummings and Claude Reynolds.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Cottrell, Luella Beach -

Luella Estella Beach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Spencer Beach was born on April 1, 1884 in Taylor County, Iowa. She passed away on July 13, 1969, at

the age of 85 years.

She attended the local country school and Lenox High School and was trained in piano and vocal music.

On March 14, 1906, she was united in marriage to James C. Cottrell. They made their home southeast of Lenox, where he passed away in 1940. She spent

the following few years in Lenox, then moved to Portland, Oregon in 1944 where she lived for almost 18 years. She 1ater made her home for a short time with

her sister, Mrs. C. D. Hetz in San Diego, California.

Her later years were spent in nursing homes in Lenox, where she was a patient for 3-1/2 years and in Bedford at the Pearl Manor Terrace Home where she

lived from August of 1966 until her death. Mrs. Cottrell fell and broke her hip on April 19th and had been in failing health since that time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, two brothers, George and Clifford and twin sisters, Mrs. Effie Jacoby and Mrs. Edna Lovell as

well as a sister Alice who died in childhood and a baby brother who died in infancy.

When she lived near Lenox, she was a member of the Calvary Church, and was always a staunch believer in the Christian way of life. She was a fifty year

member of Salome Chapter, Order of the Eastern star in Lenox.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. C. D. Hetz  (Nelle) of San Diego, California and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services, in charge of Reverend Donald Briley, were held July 10th at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox, with burial in the Lenox cemetery.

Crow, Dora Alice Saunders -

Dora Alice Saunders Crow, daughter of John and Mary (Fleming) Saunders was born in Grant Township, Adams County, Iowa on November 19, 1888, and passed away in Corning, Iowa on July 12, 1969 at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 23 days.

She was united in marriage to William K Crow on Feb. 2, 1910 at her home in Corning, Iowa by Rev Stanley F Gutelina. Mr Crow had come to Iowa as a young man from Washington Co. Pa. and lived near Prescott.  He passed away on August 26, 1967 at the age of 78 years.  To this union were born seven children, three daughters and four sons.  One son, Ralph, died on November 10, 1947 at the age of 29, leaving a widow and one son, Roger.  Surviving are the following:  Evelyn Swartz and husband Francis of Shannon City, Iowa, Velma Crow of Washington, D C, Mary Schafroth and her husband Paul of Corning, Loren Crow and wife Penny of Denver, Colo., Albert Crow and wife Bernadine of Corning and Harold Crow and wife Florence of Newton Iowa, fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She also leaves one daughter-in-law, Mrs Mary Bradford of Des Moines, Iowa, Iowa, many nephews and nieces, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Christian, Church in Prescott, Iowa, Tuesday, July 15 at 2 p. m., with Rev. Don Briley officiating.

Music was furnished by Joel Pottinger, soloist, with Mrs. Clarice Outhier, organist.

Bearers were  Bed Outhier, Albert Biley, Francis Wood, Harry Grundman, Max Daggett and Fred Shepherd.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Prescott.

Hingeley, Leo -

Leo Hingeley, 22 of rural Lenox, drowned in the flooded East 102 River near Sharpsburg last Wednesday afternoon. His body was found by searchers at 5:45 Thursday morning about 100 yards from where he had gone into the river.

Mr. Hingeley, who was employed on the Bill Scott farm about 6 miles southwest of Lenox, was helping a neighbor farmer, C.L. Hendrickson, herd cattle from

the low areas along the river to higher ground. Hingeley was on a horse but was swept into the swift current of the river when the animal slipped and he fell

off. The river was running out of its banks along its entire route as the result of the three or more inches of rain that fell in this area during the day.

Taylor County sheriff's officer and a large number of volunteers began a search for Hingeley's body after he was swept into the river. Dragging operations

were called off at dark, but the search continued under floodlights powered by portable generators during the night. The body was found shortly after

daybreak when searchers intensified the hunt.

Leo W. Hingeley, son of Leon and Mamie Hingeley, was born November 8, 1946 near Dawson, Iowa, and departed from this life on July 9, 1969 at the, age of

22 years, 8 months, and one day.

On December 14, 1963, he was united in marriage to Jolene Brammer and to this union two children were born, Randy, age 5 and Jimmy, age 3.

Leo loved the great outdoors. He spent his life farming.

He was an active member of the Taylor County Sheriff's posse.  He was employed by Scott Brothers' Elevator in Sharpsburg, Iowa.

Survivors include his widow, Jolene, two children, Randy, 5, and Jimmy 3.  He is also survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Leon Hingeley of Churdan, three brothers, Bill and Tom of Clearfield and Norvin of Churdan, and two sisters, Mrs Julia Grim of Ord, Nebr., and Verna (Mrs Frank Kozal) of Jefferson, Iowa, maternal grandmother, Verna Bridgett and paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Tom Hingeley, also Mr and Mrs Joe Brammer and family, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were: held from the United Methodist Church at Sharpsburg Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock with Rev. Edward Tschetter, officiating.

Music was furnished by Pauline Wilson and Lulu Mae Beck.

Bearers were Paul Oxley, Stanley Carlson, Richard Long, Ray Peterman, Leonard Ratliff and William Majors.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Key, Dorothy P Oller -

Mrs. Roy Key, 56, died at the Greater Community hospital in Creston Monday morning. She had been a patient there about three weeks.

Mrs. Key was born Feb. 14, 1913, and was the daughter of John and Susie Hodges Oller. She was married to Roy Key in Chicago in 1949. The Keys lived on a

farm two miles north of Lenox until 1964, when they moved to Creston.

Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Mrs. Dee Miller of Des Moines, her father, John Oller of Afton, two brothers, Joe of Knoxville and Kenneth

of Kansas City and three sisters, Thursa Degmetich of Denver, Colo., Cressie Foster of Atlantic and Doris Wickhart of Grand Island, Nebr.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday at Coen's Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Francis Crown officiating.

Burial was in Graceland cemetery at Creston.

Lewis, Michel -

Michel Lewis, 4 year old son of Marilyn Lewis of Oklahoma City, Okla., lost his life in a drowning accident April 30th.

The youngster was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James (Hod) Smith, formerly of Lenox and a great grandson of Al Smith of Lenox.

No further particulars were given about the accident in a letter received from Mrs. Smith by the Time Table the first of the week.

McCreight, D O (Orville)

D O (Orville) McCreight passed away Wednesday April 23rd at the West Heights Manor Nursing home in Clarinda, Iowa.  He had been a resident of the home a little over four weeks.

Mr McCreight was born in Winfield, Iowa Dec. 12, 1880.  The family moved to a farm north of Clearfield on hiway 25 when he was a small boy.  He united with the Clearfield United Presbyterian Church and was very active in church work, serving as an elder in both the Tarkio and Clarinda churches.

He was united in marriage to Jennie Nelson of Clarinda April 7, 1909.

Mr. McCreight was proceeded in death by his parents, one son, Paul and two brothers, Clarence and Elmer.

Survivors include his widow, Jennie, two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Ellen) Bonn of Denver, Colorado and Mrs. Headlee (Martha) Grimes of Evergreen, Colo., a son, Harold of LaCrosse, Wisc., one brother, Rev, J. L. McCreight of Pasadena, Calif., eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren three nieces and six nephews. He was an uncle of Mrs. Dick Young of Lenox.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m., Saturday, April 26th at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Clarinda with Rev. J. D. Almes , officiating.

Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Moffitt, Byron -

Byron Moffitt, long time resident of the Braddyville community died on Monday, June 16 at the Clarinda Hospital. Mr. Moffitt was past 81 years of age and

had lived an active and abundant life until his passing.

He was deeply interested in education and community activities.

Mr. Moffitt graduated from Amity College at College Springs, Iowa. After a short teaching career he spent the rest of his life on a farm east of Braddyville.

Mr. and Mrs. Moffitt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 2, 1969. Both were former school teachers.

Their four daughters, one son and two daughters-in-law are all teachers.

Mrs. Donald Briley ((Frances) of Prescott is a daughter and Mrs. Gail Stevens (Mary), formerly a teacher at Prescott, is also a  daughter. Other survivors are

his wife Bertha, two sons, Ivan of Portland, Oregon, Leroy of Amarillo, Texas, two daughters, Mrs. Jim Crawford (Effie), Osceola and Mrs. Roy Christensen, (Verla) of Shenandoah. Also four sons-in-law and 15 grandchildren.

Nabb, Ed -

Ed Nabb, 69, brother of Mrs. Lloyd Wood of Lenox, died Saturday, July 5th at Eldorado Springs, Missouri. Mr. Nabb was a retired army officer. He is

survived by his wife.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wood and another sister, Mrs, John Rehder of Longmont, Colorado, attended the funeral services Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at Eldorado

Springs, Full military rites were held.

Burial was in Eldorado Springs.

Quinn, Ernest Raymond -

Ernest Raymond Quinn, son of James and Catherine Quinn was born Jan. 7, 1896 on a farm southwest of Lenox and passed away at the Rosary Hospital at

Corning Friday, April 25th, 1969 after an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

At the age of 22 Doc enlisted in the U.S. Army and was in the "Old Hickory 30th Division" and spent several years overseas. After his discharge from service,

he took up interior and exterior decorating and continued in this work until failing health caused him to retire.

On July 5th, 1942 at Grant City, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Geneva Kirkman who survives. Other survivors include 2 brothers, Eddie of Spencer, Iowa, William of Lenox and 1 sister, Mrs. Marie DeVoe of Coming, also 6 nieces and 3 nephews.

Funeral services were held from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist

Church, officiating.

Bearers were Harold Knox, Arthur Jones, Dean Larimer, Robert Rhoades, Vernal Thompson and Walter Stapleton.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Riley, Grace Aileen McCloud -

Grace Aileen McCloud was born September 21, 1906 in LeMars, Missouri, the only daughter of W. L. and Anna McCloud.  In her early childhood, the family

moved to Iowa and lived on a farm northeast of Lenox.

Grace attended rural schools in Adams County and was graduated from the Lenox High School in 1905. After graduation, she taught school for nine years.

She joined the Christian Church in Lenox at an early age, but because the family lived closer to Stringtown, they attended and took an active part there. In later years, she transferred her membership to the Mercer Center Methodist Church where she was a faithful member as long as her health permitted.

She was married to Harold Riley on October 24, 1934 at Stringtown and they spent their entire married life on  their farm near Mercer Center with the exception of the first year when they lived with Harold's parents while their own home was being built.

Grace passed away in the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha on Sunday morning, April 27 at 8:45. She had been in ill health for 20 years. During these

years she was a patient suffer and her ever-ready smile and Christian spirit were an inspiration to all who visited with her. She always shared willingly with others her many talents. She directed the music in the youth fellowship, Sun. School community staging in the Farm Bureau and in other groups needing her assistance.

She was vitally interested in the many young people with whom she came in contact during her years as a public school teacher and a worker with youth groups and children in the church. Her wise counsel and concern, for their Christian life helped many to know the love of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her oldest brother, LaVerne, and a niece, Joanne. Survivors include her husband, Harold, her brothers,

Dale of San Gabriel, Calif., and Dean of Malibu, Calif., three sisters-in-law, three nieces one nephew, one great nephew, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, April 30, 1969 69 at the Mercer Center United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. William Fry. Music was furnished by Mrs. Joe Cook, pianist and Mrs. Doyle Tranbarger and Mrs. Bert Peckham, vocalists.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lee Brokaw, Wayne Bunting, Harry Higgins, Lloyd Duncan, Ivan Bissell and George Schafrotb.

Thomas, Beulah Dunbar -

Word was received by Mrs. Dick Dunbar that Mrs. Beulah Dunbar Thomas of Milwaukee, Wisc., passed away at the Columbia Hospital May 14, 1969. She had

been in failing health for several years.

She leaves to mourn her passing three step-daughters, grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dick Dumber and several nieces and nephews.

Underwood, Mary Elizabeth Filbert -

Sharpsburg lost its oldest citizen when Mary Elizabeth Underwood passed away at West Heights Manor in Clarinda on May 9, 1969 at 9:30 a. m. Mary Elizabeth was the seventh child of John Constant and Mary Celestine Paymal Filbert and was the last surviving member of her family. She was born November 20, 1873 on a

farm south of Lenox now known as the Dixon farm. Except for a few years spent in Kansas as a very young child, she has been a life-long resident of Taylor County.

On March 2, 1893, she was united in marriage to Charles Lee Underwood by a Presbyterian minister, Rev Hinkhouse, in the home near Sharpsburg of T. C.

Olson, brother-in-law and sister of Mary Elizabeth.

Charlie and Mary, as they were always known, began their married life on a farm south of Conway, Iowa. Later, they moved to a farm northeast of Sharpsburg where they spent the rest of their married life. A son, Clifford Francis, was born to them on April 22, 1895. Their son preceded his mother in death on December 9, 1963. Her husband, Charlie, passed away on March 21, 1941.

Mary has been a member of the Presbyterian Church all of her adult life, always ready with a helping hand whenever needed.  She was a teacher in the Sunday School and had a class of young adults known as the "Kum Joyne Us" class for many years.

Her daughter-in-law, Bessie Underwood, a grandson, Richard and his wife Theoma, two great granddaughters, Mary Faye and Patricia Anne and her husband,

Sgt David J. Miller, also nieces, nephews and a host of friends mourn her passing.

In Proverbs 31: 27 and 28, we find these words: "She looked well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed: her husband also he praiseth her." These words tell what Mary Elizabeth Underwood was to her loved ones.

Funeral services were held May 12 from the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, with Rev. John D. Kerr officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Richard Wilson, Mrs. Bill Reed, Mrs. Richard Fitzgerald and Mrs. Donald Donaldson with Mrs. John Cribbs, organist.

Bearers were Leonard Knott, Howard Elder, Cloyd Pfander, Ralph Rutledge, Spencer Peck and John Cribbs.

Interment was in the Conway Cemetery at Conway, Iowa.

Zollman, Frank Alexander -

Frank Alexander Zollman was born July 30, 1886 near Lexington, Virginia, the son of William and Ida Cunningham Zollman, the fourth of their eight children.

He passed away May 14, 1969 at Mt. Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 14 days.

He was married May 27, 1908 at Claremore, Oklahoma, to Mable Severns. To this union six children were born : Mildred (Mrs. C R Howell) of Henry, Nebraska, Albert of Descanso, California, Ora (Mrs. William Bell) of Blockton, Lenore (Mrs. Everett King) of Blockton, William of Perry, Iowa, and Clifford, who preceded his father

in death August 31, 1922.

In addition to his wife and children, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, he leaves to mourn his passing, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one brother, William, of Lexington, Virginia, and 4 sisters, Mrs. Blanche McHenry, Mrs. Angeline Moore, Mrs. Mary Montgomery and Mrs. Josephine Morrison. all of Lexington, Virginia.

and several nieces and nephews.

As lovers of the outdoors, the soil and animals, Frank and Mable spent most of their nearly 61 years together in farming, ready to lend a hand to family and

friends.

He was a member of the Blockton Christian Church, and of the IOOF lodge.

Funeral services were conducted May 16 from the Christian Church at Blockton with Rev. Swan and Rev. Landis officiating.

Bearers were David Bell, Millard Howell, Charles Scripter, Wendell Sollers, Stanley Amrine, all grandsons and grandsons-in-law and a nephew, Ben Zollman.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blockton.
