A
fire at Sharpsburg Wednesday, January 18, took the life of one child and
injured another. Michael Leigh Rice, 3, died as the result of smoke inhalation.
His sister, Michelle, 5, suffered burns and lung damage. Parents of the
children are Mr. and Mrs. Larry Rice. Their home is in ashes, with all the
contents.
Fire
chief Ira Long of Sharpsburg was able to give an account of events in sequence.
He said that a neighbor looked out, saw a little bit of fire, described as like
a string of Christmas lights along the edge of the roof of the Rice home. By
the time she had dialed the fire number, flames had broken out over the top of
the house. Long said the air in homes is very dry this time of year so fire danger
is multiplied.
At
Lenox City Hall, they said the call for the Lenox fire department came at 9:10 p.m.
The mother had put the children to bed and gone briefly to sweep snow from the
front porch and walk. She suddenly turned to see the place in flames, and could
not enter because of them.
Ira
Long must have entered from the back, as he said he was in the smoke filled
bedroom where the children had been, then found them by the back door of the
kitchen.
Any
attempt to revive the little boy failed. The older child was taken by ambulance
to St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha where she has been on the critical list.
The
Sharpsburg firemen said the fire started in the attic. The only thing there to
cause it, he thinks, was the wiring.
Firemen
were able to save the homes on either side, belonging to Bob Donaldsons, who are away for the winter, and to Barbara
Roberts, who was at Corning at work. There may have been some smoke damage to
these homes, Mr. Long said.
The
gathering was unusually large at Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Friday
night when friends and relatives came to express their sympathy.
Michael
Leigh Rice, son of Larry and Jeanne Reed Rice, was born Dec. 1, 1974 at
Corning. He passed away January 18, 1978 at the age of 3 years, 1 month and 17
days.
