Riley, Alma Pauline
McGregor -
Mrs.
Howard Riley, 65, died Monday, May 28th at the Greater Community Hospital in
Creston after a lingering illness.
Alma
Pauline, the fourth child of Frank and Minnie McClure McGregor, was born on a
farm near Corning, Iowa. The family later bought a farm east of Prescott and
grew to include
six
children. When she was only six years old, she lost her mother, and a year and
a half later, death claimed her baby sister, Minnie Louise. She always felt
especially grateful
that
the family was reared by a loving and devoted stepmother, Jennie Campbell
McGregor, who also had presented them with another sister. Memories of her
youth were joyous memories of the escapades and adventures of a large, closely
knit, happy family working hard together.
She
was educated in the country schools near Prescott and was graduated from
Prescott high school. After leaving Creston Junior College, she worked at the
post office in
Prescott
until her marriage to Howard Riley on March 3, 1929.
Pauline
and Howard established their first home on a farm four miles north of Lenox
where their daughter Beverly was born. A few months later they moved to farm
east of Lenox
which
was the family home for the next 32 years. It was there that their son, Harlan,
was born. These were years of hard work, of dedication to home and family, and
of an
enduring
interest for Pauline in the activities of the Methodist Church and a growing
involvement in the Order of the Eastern Star, which culminated with her service
as Worthy Matron.
Much
of this time her health was frail, and this circumstance required a temporary
move to Phoenix, Arizona, for the family. This area, so very different from her midwest farm background, delighted Pauline, and many
of her fondest memories and warm friendships originated in these times.
In
1964 Mr. and Mrs. Riley turned the family home over to Harlan and his wife
Lorraine and they moved to the farm that had been the McGregor home near
Prescott, where for
seven
years they thoroughly enjoyed living among the friends and neighbors of their
youth. With some regret they retired from the farm in 1971 and returned to make
their home in Lenox. Just seven months after retirement she was stricken with
the illness which proved to be fatal.
Unselfish
love and dedication to her family, pride in her home and in her homemaking
chores, compassion for the problems and needs of others, steadfast courage,
quiet guidance
and
self sacrifice — these are qualities that characterized a generous and loving
daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma, friend and neighbor.
Those
who will cherish these memories most fondly are her husband Howard, her
daughter Beverly, her son Harlan, her daughter-in-law, Lorraine, her father,
Frank McGregor, her
brothers,
Forest and Clifford McGregor, her sisters, Mildred James, Helen Burman and Frances Boys. Those who have lost the most by
having her the shortest time are her beloved grandchildren in whom she took
such great pride, and delight, named Hudson, Denise, Wayne and Diane Riley.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, May 30th at the United Methodist Church in Lenox at 2 p.m., with Rev Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished by Maralyn Beck, Billie Jean Barker and
Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Henry Beck, Paul Davis, Ralph Zabel, Robert
Morris, Glendon Walter and James Rychnovsky.
Burial was in North Fairview cemetery.
