Borwig, Larry -
Two
accidents near here have claimed lives in recent days. Larry Borwig of Gravity, 19, was killed instantly in a collision
on Highway 148 north of Bedford
Tuesday
night, April 18. He was southbound about 7 p.m. when he lost control of the car
in the snow storm that was in progress.
The
car was hit by a pickup driven by his sister, Marcy. A younger sister, Donna
Reed was also in the pickup.
The
car was completely demolished, cut in two about the place where the steering
wheel is located. The driver was thrown 100 feet and died instantly,
probably
from head injuries. The pickup in which the girls were riding left the road and
slid into the. ditch. Traffic was blocked on Highway 148 for
hours.
The girls were taken to an Omaha hospital.

Bridgeman, Mary Margaret -
Mary
Margaret Bridgeman, daughter of John and Margaret (Shannon) Bridgeman, was born
on her parent's farm west of Lenox February 22, 1888 and
passed
away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, March 31, 1978, at the age of 90
years, 1 month and 9 days.
She
spent her early life in the Lenox and Creston vicinity and then moved to
Denver, Colorado, where she worked until she retired. She returned to
Lenox
and entered the Lenox Care Center in 1975 where she lived until her death.
She
is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Bridgeman of Lenox and a number of nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five
brothers
and three sister.
Funeral
services were held at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lenox, April 3 at
10:00 a.m., with Father Fitzgerald officiating.
Burial
was in Calvary Cemetery in Lenox.
Pallbearers
were Gene Mullin, Bob Callahan, Harold Donaldson, Duane Eigenheer,
Leo Ryan and Art Schweers.

Ferguson, Thomas R -
Thomas
R. Ferguson, the son of George and Janet Frew Ferguson, was born on June 3, 1905 near Lenox, Iowa, where he lived until he
retired to Lenox in
1974.
He passed away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, on April 8. 1978 after
an extended illness.
On
June 20, 1936 he was united in marriage with Vero Owens of Clearfield. To this
union were born a son, Thomas Claire and a daughter, Sarah
Janet.
Tom
was very active in community youth activities and was elected an honorary
member of the county 4-H committee. He was also a member of the Lenox
School
Board, and had served as committee member of the Taylor County A.S.C.S. He
served as an elder for several years in the Clearfield United Presbyterian
Church
until the Clearfield church disbanded. At that time he transferred his
membership to the Lenox United Presbyterian Church.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Vera: his son, Tom and his wife. Barbara;
a daughter, Sarah and husband, Dale Stephens; six granddaughters;
Lori
and Cindi Ferguson, and Janet, Julie, Jeri and Jodi
Stephens. Also surviving are two brothers; Hamilton and George Ferguson both of
Lenox and two
sisters,
Flora Arnold of Des Moines and Mabel Armstrong of Lenox as well as many nieces
and nephews and a host of friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters; Mary, Stella, and
Margaret. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Services
were Monday, April 10, at the United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Leonard Mclntire officiating.
Music
was by Roberta Lockhart, organist.
Casket
bearers were Leo Evans, George Sweeney, Glen Norton, Ivan Bennett, Willie Wurster and Paul Bailey.
Interment
was in West Fairview Cemetery.

Gordon, Essie Lee -
Essie
Lee Gordon was born August 4, 1886, in Peoria, Illinois, to William Evan and
Marian Livingston Gordon and passed away on March 30, 1978,
following
a stroke at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox, Iowa. She was 91 years, 7 months,
and 26 days. She was the youngest of three daughters being
proceeded
in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Cora Gordon Godden, Marian Josephine
Gordon, 2 brothers-in-law and 2 nephews.
She
taught school in the country around Lenox for years.
On
December 20, 1933, she moved to Arkansas and later on to Ogden, Utah where she
worked in the Naval Depot during World War II. She received a citation
for meritious service. From there she moved to Oakland, Calif, where she lived until January 27, 1977, when she
came to the care center in Lenox.
She
is survived by 2 nephews, Lester Hegwood and wife
Helen of Kansas City, Kansas, Leland Hegwood and wife
Dorothy of Lenox, 3 nieces, Irma Wilcox,
Erla Barker and husband Jesse of Lenox, Verlee Wilhite and husband Lester of Rock Island, Ill. Also, 7
great nieces and nephews along with several in the
3rd,
4th and 5th generations.
The
service was April 1 at Larkin-Bender Funeral home, Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiating, with organ music by Ruth Boltinghouse.
Casket
bearers were Philip Hegwood, Randy Hogue, Robert Hegwood, Claude Hogue, Frank Stanger and Teddy Boyer.
Interment was in E. Fairview cemetery.

Hamilton,
James -
In a
second accident the afternoon of April 16, James Hamilton, 42, of Shenandoah
drowned at the Lake of Three Fires when the boat he was
operating
capsized. This accident happened nearly across from the concession area along
the west shore line. Hamilton, his wife and brother-in-law,
Doyle McPherrin of Bedford, had been fishing and were
returning to the dock in rough water.
Mrs.
Hamilton and McPherrin stayed with the boat and
floated to shore. Hamilton went down in the icy water. The survivors walked
around the lake to the
ranger's
cottage to get help. The accident occurred about 4:15. The sheriff was summoned
and the body
was recovered about 5:30.

Hayes,
Otto Sylvester -
Otto Sylvester
Hayes, 76, of Atlantic, died Monday morning, April 17, 1978 at the Miller
Retirement home, where he had been a resident since Sept. 26, 1977.
The son of Mortimor and Emma Page Hayes, he was born on July 29, 1901
in Lenox and grew to manhood there. He was graduated from Lenox High
School in 1920
and was married to Lola Howie on December 13, 1920.
Following their marriage, they farmed south of Lenox for several years. Later
he worked as
Taylor and
Ringgold County Old Age Assistance investigator until 1939 when they moved to
Atlantic and he worked as Cass County O.A.A. investigator until
1941. Then he
became the Des Moines Register and Tribune district manager for several years.
They moved back to Lenox in 1946 where he owned and
operated a
Standard Bulk Plant. In 1956 they moved to Des Moines and he was employed by
Solar Aircraft. Later he was a clerk for several years for the Iowa State
Liquor
Commission.
Surviving are five
sons, Lyle and Gene both of Des Moines, Clive of Shenandoah, Carroll of
Atlantic, and Thomas of Springfield, Illinois; one daughter, Mrs.
Richard
(Donna) Copic of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 18
great grandchildren; three brothers, John, George, and Glenn all of Creston;
two sisters, Mildred
Lininger of Texas and Lucille Hudson of Winter Park, Florida; also a number of nieces
and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lola in 1974; 2 grandchildren; one
brother; and three sisters.
The funeral
Mass was Wednesday, April 19, 1978 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic church
in Lenox, Father Michael O'Meara officiating.
Musical
selections were by Mrs. Marion Hughes. Pallbearers were grandsons, Michael
Hayes, Dennis Hayes, David Hayes, Richard Copic, Dan
Hayes and
Joe Hayes.
Burial was in East Fairview Cemetery, west of Lenox, Iowa.

Dolly
Johnston was born on May 15, 1898, in Elliott, Iowa, to Lorenzo and Grace
Casteel Johnston and passed away on March 30, 1978, at the Crest
Haven
Care Center in Creston, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 10 months, 15 days.
On
September 9, 1915, she was united in marriage to Mannie Johnston at the Oak Hill Church north of Gravity, Iowa. To this union 6
children were born.
She
was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Dolly was a member of
the Navy Mothers Club, Past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge, member of
W.C.TU.,
the American Legion Auxiliary and a longtime member of the Methodist Church.
She
is survived by her husband, Mannie, of the Afton Care
Center, sons, Kermit Johnston of Lenox, Iowa; Emerson Johnston of League City,
Texas; daughters, Alma
Smith
of Creston, Iowa, and Grace Weese of Avinger, Texas;
14 grandchildren and number of great-grandchildren; a sister, Byrnece Mathews of North Kansas City, Mo; 2 brothers, Lewis
Straight of Tuscon, Arizona and Miles Straight of
Kansas City, Mo.
Dolly
was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sons, Kenneth Eugene and Bernard
Olin Johnston.
Services
were April 1 at the United Methodist Church, the Rev. Floyd Newbrougb.
officiating with music by Norma Paymal, and Donna
Veatch, soloist.
Casket
bearers were Raymond Swank, Kenneth McFee, Wayne McFee, Richard Gray, George Young and Bill Barrans. Interment was in Washington Cemetery at Gravity.

Bernice
Nadine Walter Mills was born July 4, 1906 on a farm two miles west of Lenox and
passed away Feb. 26, 1978 at Fargo, Fla. at the age of 71 years,
7
months and 22 days.
She
was a daughter of Ruth Belle Walter and John W. Walter. She was a graduate of
Lenox High School in the class of 1924.
She
was united in marriage to Alton H. Mills, who survives her.
She
and her husband had both been employed in Chicago, Ill. until their retirement.
She
is survived by three brothers, Harlan Walter of Wickenberg,
Ariz., Arnold F. Walter of Quincy, Ill. and Orval Walter of Lenox; four nephews and two nieces.
Interment was in Fargo, Fla.

Safley, Irma Velma Jarvis -
Irma
Velma Safley, daughter of Elmer Jarvis and Minnie Mae
Hogue Jarvis, was born September 20, 1896 at Platteville, Iowa. She lived all
of her life in Taylor
County
and the last year and half at the Clearview Home in
Clearfield, Iowa, where she departed this life on February 26, 1978.
She
was united in marriage on December 31, 1919 in Bedford, Iowa to Oliver Fremont Safley. They lived on the family Jarvis farm near Bedford,
until they
moved
to a farm near Clearfield in the late 1940's. Mr. Safley preceded her in death on December 15, 1965.
Three
children were born to this union. A son, Delbert Andrew Safley,
who preceded his parents in death on August 21, 1947. Two daughters survive,
Mrs.
William (Letha) Kleckner of Creston, and Mrs. Kenneth
(Lois) Mullen of Arcadia, Calif., one sister, Mrs. Lou (Wilda)
Ackley of Bedford; 11 grandchildren and
13
great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and one sister, Mrs. Loyd (Bertha) Grubb and three grandchildren, Kenneth David
Mullen, Charles
Cason,
Jr. and Linda Sue Kleckner.
Mrs. Safley was a member of the Christian church of
Clearfield. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by
all who loved and knew
her.
A memorial fund has been established at the Clearview Home in Clearfield.

Walter
Anthony Stapleton, son of William and Catherine Stapleton, was born August 18,
1904 in Lenox, Iowa and passed away April 3, 1978 at Rosary
Hospital,
Corning, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 16 days.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie, who died November 23, 1972, his
parents, sister. Mary, who died in infancy, brothers Herman, Thomas and
Tine,
also 2 half-brothers, Bert and Elmer Stapleton of Burlington, Ia.
He
attended the Lenox Public School. He spent most of his life in Lenox excepting
a short while in Burlington, la., and Peoria, Ill. He met Goldie Meier while in
Burlington
and was married to her at Wapello, la., July 8, 1925. To this union one
daughter, Gweneth was born.
Walter
was a life time member of St. Patrick's Church. He was an active member of the
Stock and Saddle Club for many years. He was a carpenter by
trade.
He
leaves to mourn, his daughter, Mrs. Dean (Gwen) Larimer, two grandsons, Terry
and Dick; two sisters, Martha Tepley of Lenox, and
Alice Wynn of Corning;
a
number of in laws, uncles, aunts nieces, nephews and friends.
The wake was
held Wednesday night at Larkin-Bender Funeral Home.
Services
were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox, April 6, at 10 a.m., with
Father Michael O'Meara officiating.
Marian
Hughes was organist. Burial was in East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox. Casketbearers were Richard Notz,
Hub Bradley Sr. Hub Bradley Jr., Larry Bradley,

Fred
Edward Strunce, the son of Frank and Jannie Lakart Strunce,
was born on November 3, 1901 at Chicago, Ill.; and passed away at his home in
Lenox, la. on Sunday morning,
Feb.
26, 1978 at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 23 days.
On
June 20, 1936, he was united in marriage with Vera White, at Creston, Iowa,
where they have lived since that time.
He
and Vera operated the Lenox Locker Plant for many years until his retirement in
1969.
Fred
was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Nell Jeffrey, and by three
brothers, Ed, Harry and Wm. G. (Bill) Strunce.
He
is survived by his wife, Vera of Lenox; two brothers, Stanley Strunce of Bellevue, Neb. and Joe Strunce of Bettendorf, la.; and two sisters, Jennie Strunce of Chicago, Ill. and Rose Le Baron of Omaha, Nebr., as well as other relatives
and many friends.
Fred
was a member of the Tremont Masonic Lodge No. 343, AF&AM and was an active
member for as long as his health permitted.
Funeral
services were Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1978 at 2:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral
Home with Rev. Leonard W. Mclntire officiating. Norma Paymal was organist.
Masonic
graveside rites were conducted by Tremont Lodge No. 343 AF&AM with Wendell
Hamilton of Omaha, Neb. Worshipful Master.
Pallbearers
were Vernal Thompson, Marvin Reed, Richard Walter, Marian Spicer, Harold Carey
and Tip Lucas.
Interment was in North Fairview
Cemetery.

Anne Walter, 35, of Kirkland, Washington, passed away April 23 at Seattle. She

University where she was a member of Alpha
Chi
Omega Sorority, and graduated from the University of Washington.
Mrs.
Walter was a member of Central Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
She
leaves her husband, Marvin J. Walter, children Kipp and Kristi, both at home, two brothers, Larry K. Jadrnicek of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; and
Robert Jadrnicek, Mountain Home, Ark.; her husband's
parents. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Walter of Lenox.
Funeral
services were held April 26 at Greens Bellevue Funeral Home.

Rockley -
Rockley.
son of William and Ida Grimm Wiese, was born November 7, 1919, near Gray, Iowa.
He attended the rural schools in Audubon County and was united in marriage with
Dorothy Ruhde on June 3, 1944 by Reverend W. L. Tillman at
Denison, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage Rockley entered the United States
Army, serving in Germany and
also
was a prisoner of war.
After
his discharge he was employed by F.D. Ross & Company in Manning and later
by Priebe & Sons also of Manning. Later he worked
in other towns including Carroll and
for
the past thirteen years has worked as an egg and poultry inspector for the
United States Department of Agriculture, with his headquarters in Lenox, Iowa.
Rockley
had been in ill health since last fall and passed away Thursday. April 6, 1978,
at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha at the age of 58, 4 months and 29 days.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
He
is survived by his wife, Dorothy and three sons, Gary Wiese of Carroll, Iowa;
Jack Wiese of Lenox, Iowa; and Brand Wiese at home, Lenox, Iowa. He is also
survived by 4 grandchildren and one sister, Eunice, Mrs. Lester Meggers of Manilla.
Rockley
was a member of the American Legion Post #694 of Arcadia and a past member of
the V.F.W. in Manning.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, April 9, 1978, at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Joel Wright of the Presbyterian
Church in Manning officiated.
Interment
was in the Manning Cemetery.
Music
was provided by organist, Bonita Hagedorn and soloist
Judy Joens. Military Honors were performed by the
American legion Post #694 in Arcadia, Iowa.
Casketbearers were Gene Meggers, Kenneth Ewoldt,
Mike Spack, Larry Ruhde,
Steve Hausman, and Milford Wiese.

Lloyd -
Lloyd
Wood, the son of Joseph and Maude Hamilton Wood, was born Nov. 21, 1901 in
Adams County, Iowa on a farm located four miles north and two miles
east
of Lenox, Iowa. He passed away at Rosary hospital in Corning Saturday night at
the age of 76 years, four months and four days.
Lloyd
attended and graduated from the Lenox schools. He was united in marriage to
Lela Nabb at Alliance, Nebraska April 14, 1922. To
this union was born
three
children, Bill, Reldon and Linda.
Lloyd
spent 44 years on this same farm, raising his family and farming. In 1967 he
and Lela moved into Lenox where he remained active with his hobbies
of
woodworking and horses. He also enjoyed working at the International Harvester
dealership until the time of his death.
Lloyd
was an avid horseman and was a charter member of the Taylor county Sheriff's
posse, and after many years of devoted service was voted a lifetime
membership.
He served as secretary-treasurer of the Lenox Rodeo Association for a number of
years.
He leaves
to mourn his death, his wife Lela of Lenox; sons, Bill and his wife Shirley of
Waverly, Kans. and Reldon and his wife Peggy of
Ceres, Calif.; and a
daughter,
Linda Miller of Creston; ten grandchildren, Don Wood, Connie Lough and husband Rick, Bonnie Wood, Leslie Reinhardt,
Steven Wood, Susan Pavlakis
and
husband Tony, Verona Sweeney and husband Gordon, Corbi Leonard and husband Raymond, Kerby Miller and Jamie
Miller as well as five great-grandchildren
and
many, many friends.
Services
were Tuesday, March 28 at the Lenox United Presbyterian church at 2 p.m., with
Rev. Leonard Mclntire officiating. Music was by
Roberta Lockhart.
Casket
bearers were Donald Wood, Rick Lough, Kerby Miller, Raymond Leonard, Lonnie Barker and Don Keast. Honorary bearers were Alan Pine, Dayton
Hucke,
Clyde Miller, Hurry Miller. Burial was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
