Mrs Velma Bolte, 55, died suddenly at her farm east of
Lenox at 6 a m, Saturday, April 1. She
was the daughter of Edith and Allie Parker and was born and lived in this
community most of her life. She married Roy Bolte of
Lenox,

14, 1937. She was a member of the Prairie Star Presbyterian Church and OES.
Mrs. Bolte is survived by her husband, Roy, one sister, Mrs Portia Hancock of Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers,
Milo
and
Archie both residents of this community.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, April 4 at 2 p m at the Prairie Star church, with
Rev Donald Freeman officiating.
Rolland
Buxton. was soloist, accompanied by Mrs Norma Paymal. The
pallbearers were Gerald Scott, Howard Stephens, Ernie Hower,
Fred Moore, Russell Davenport and Lou Vanderpluym. Burial was at the Rising Sun cemetery under
arrangements of Bender Funeral Home.

Robert
I Bordner, 36, of Clarinda and formerly of Des
Moines, died of a heart attack Saturday at Clarinda Municipal hospital.
Services were Tuesday in the Presbyterian church there. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two
children; his mother, Mrs Robert Bordner,
of Shenandoah and a sister, Mrs F M Braley of Shenandoah. His wife is the former Jean Davidson,
daughter of Judge and Mrs Harold Davidson of Clarinda
and niece of Mrs Glenn Leekliter.

M Boyden died early Tuesday at her home in Sharpsburg. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs Belle Phalen,

Anna
M. Boyden was born Dec. 23, 1861, and departed this life at her home in
Sharpsburg on Mar. 14, 1961. She had passed her 99th birthday. She was one of
eight children born to John and Clarinda Knott. Born near Peoria, Ill, she came with her parents by covered wagon at the
age of 16 to a home north of Sharpsburg.
On
Jan. 6, 1884, she was married to William Boyden. To this union were born two
daughters, Flaura Belle and Nettie Pearl. Nettie died at the age of 9.
Mrs.
Boyden became a charter member of the Presbyterian Church in 1895 and she
remained a member the rest of her life.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, 4 brothers and two
sisters. She leaves to mourn one
daughter, Belle Phalen, 2 granddaughters, Marguerite
Barlow of Lenox; Lorene Boydston of Sharpsburg, and 5
great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren and many other relatives and
friends.

Mrs Bessie Boydston, 78, of Sharpsburg died Saturday morning. The body was
brought to the Bender Funeral home. Services were held Monday at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church, the
Rev. E. McGeehee officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery at
Shenandoah. One son, Gerald, survives and two grandchildren.

Bessie Hayes -
Bessie
Hayes Boydston passed away March 4, 1961 at the age
of 78 years, one month and 22 days. The daughter of Carles and Mary Hayes. She was born Jan 10, 1883, on a farm in Decatur County, Iowa.
Later they moved to a farm near Shenandoah, Iowa.
On
April 27, 1902, she was united in marriage to Charles Boydston.
To this union two children were born, Gayle Irene
and
Gerald Hayes. In March 1913 they moved to a farm near Sharpsburg. Her daughter
Gayle passed away in 1918 and her husband Charles in 1948.
At
an early age she professed her faith and belonged to various churches until she
joined the Presbyterian church in
Sharpsburg
of which she was a faithful worker until her death. She leaves to mourn her passing her son
Gerald and wife Lorene, two grand daughters, Patricia
Nicely and Geraldine Dillon. Three great grand children, one sister, Carrie Hayes.
many other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg Monday afternoon,
March 16. Rev McGehee, pastor of the church
officiated. Burial was at Shenandoah.

Mrs Fannie Ely, 89, died Monday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs Helen Scott in Montezuma, la. Funeral services were
held Wednesday at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev James Eddy officiating, with
burial in Lenox cemetery. Her husband, Alpha Ely, died in 1937. The family
lived one mile north of Lenox from Mar 1910 to March 1937.

Fannie
Ely was born Nov. 10, 1871, and departed this life Mar. 13, 1961, at the home
of her granddaughter, Mrs Helen Scott, Montezuma,
Iowa. Her parents came from England originally, settling south of Corning. She
grew to womanhood in that vicinity and was married to Alpha L. Ely Oct. 1,
1890. They started farming in that same vicinity, later buying a farm home
adjoining the one her folks settled on. They lived there until March, 1910,
when they moved to their home one mile north of Lenox, residing there until her
husband died in April, 1937.
Later,
she purchased a farm near Gravity where she lived until she needed nurse's
care. She entered the Rest Home in Lenox
where Mrs. Thomas cared for her tenderly until she recovered from her
accident. Later she went to live at the Krauth Nursing home near Corning.
She
was a charter member of the Fair View church, later transferring her membership
to the Presbyterian church at Lenox.
She
was the mother of eight children: Mrs. Muriel Sommer,
Mrs. J.H. (Edna) Kanoff, Mrs. Roy (Frances) Gallison, Mrs.
Charles
B. (Erma) Crouch, James H. Ely and Bert Ely. She was preceded in death by 2 sons, her husband and two
brothers.
She
leaves a sister, Mrs. J. A. Pearson, Clarinda, 7 grandchildren, 16 great
grandchildren and 15 great, great grandchildren. She lived to enjoy a reunion of the 5
generations in August, 1959, when her great grandson S-Sgt Walter G, Fox came
with his family from Florida where he is with the Air Force guided missles. His daughter, Vickie Lavon, 8, made the 5
generations.
Mrs.
Ely led a very active life even after she was confined to her bed and wheel
chair. She remained keen of mind, enjoying TV and keeping in touch with world
events. She lived all her life in Taylor and Adams counties until 1959, when
she went to the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Scott, where she was
happy and tenderly cared for in her last days.
Funeral
services were at the Bender Funeral home Mar. 15, 1961, with the Rev James Eddy
in charge. Mrs. Bender, organist accompanied Mrs Vera
Roll and Mrs Bertha Maharry,
who sang Nearer My God to Thee and Some Day We'll Understand. Casket bearers were Roy Bolte,
Geo. Barrans, Johh Krohmer, Karl Eberle, Kenneth Eberle and Herman Haering. Burial
was in the Lenox cemetery beside her husband, Alpha Leotus Ely and her son, Leo Ely.

Lloyd
Samuel Hyatt, 61, died at Los Angeles, Cal, Feb 16. His relatives here received word of his death
Friday evening. The body was brought to the Bender funeral home where services
were held Tuesday afternoon, the Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox
cemetery.
The
deceased was the son of Jefferson and Lorette Hyatt
and was born Aug 20, 1900 at Shenandoah. He died Feb 16 at the age of 61 years,
6i months. The family lived in Lenox a
number of years, then moved to Estherville. There Lloyd was married to Pauline
Williams. He was a veteran of World War
II and a member of the Blue Grove church.
Surviving
are one son Jack, Riverside, Cal, one daughter, Donna Lou of Long Beach, Cal,
two sisters, Mrs Frank Key of Lenox and Mrs Ralph Wiley of Kenosha, Wisc.
He was preceded in death by a brother Clark and a daughter, Marton.

John received word by way of the state highway patrol Sunday that his mother, Mrs Ottie John, 65, of Bloomfield
had died at her home there. Survivors are her husband, Wardie;

Pete
Johnson, who lived at Stringtown with his daughter, Mrs Fred Shepherd died at the hospital in Creston about 8
am Tuesday. His body is at the Roland funeral home in Corning. Mr Johnson is
survived by his daughter, Mrs Shepherd, and a son Foyd Johnson of Lincoln, Neb.

Pete
Johnson, son of Peter and Elizabeth Johnson, was born Dec 11, 1873 in Iowa
County, la., and passed away In the Creston hospital Feb 21, 1961 at the age of
87 years, 2 months and 10 days.
Mr Johnson came with his parents to Adams county in 1880. He was united in
marriage to Miss Alice Lee Feb 17, 1898. To this union were born six children.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, two sisters, two brothers
and four children. His wife passed away
Dec 12, 1938. He is survived by two children, Mrs Fred Shepherd of Lenox and Floyd Johnson of Lincoln, Neb.; 3 grandchildren,
Dale and Harold Shepherd and Helen Heller of Lincoln; 2 great grandchildren,
Carol and Larry Heller; 2 sisters, Mrs Edward Odson and Mrs Emelia Hendrickson and 3 brothers, Theo of Villisca; Oleo of Audubon and Ellas of California.
Mr Johnson spent most of his life in Adams and Montgomery counties on a farm until
retiring to Villisca where he lived until the past fifteen months which he
spent with his daughter He was a kind and loving father and he will be greatly
missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Services
were conducted by the Rev R Keith Smith at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning
Feb 23. Interment was at the Strand cemetery.

Mrs Elsie Jones died Sunday, Feb 12 at the home of her daughter at Lynwood,
Washington. Funeral services were held
Friday, Feb 17 at the Sharpsburg Methodist church. Rev Frank Greenwood officiated. Burial was in
the Marshalltown cemetery south of Diagonal.
Elsie
Belle daughter of Mr and Mrs Noah Gunter was born on a farm near Benton, Iowa, December 14, 1890. On
February 21, 1909 she was united in marriage to Walter E Jones. In 1929 they
moved to a farm east of Conway. In 1947 they moved to Sharpsburg where they became
custodians of the Sharpsburg school. In 1958 she left Sharpsburg to live with
her daughter in Lynnwood, Washington.
As a
young girl she joined the United Brethren church in Benton and later
transferred her membership to the Sharpsburg Methodist church. Mrs Jones was preceded in death by her husband and three
children: Treva, Cecil and Thomas. She leaves a
daughter Mrs Olive Stevens of Lynnwood, Washington, a
son, Weldon Jones of New Market, 2

Clyde Spicer of and Gene Baxter of Clearfield; 3 nephews, Phil, Paul and Harry
Gunter; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Homer
Vinton Lovitt, 87, resident of Corvallis, Oregon,
passed away Saturday, Feb 25. The son of
E P and Elizabeth Jane Lovitt, he was born July 24,
1873 at Lenox. He lived in Lenox until his marriage to Mary Etta Hunter on Feb
16 1898 in Aliceville, Kansas. For 20 years, the couple made their home near
Aliceville moving to Ottawa, Kansas in 1920.
In
1953 they moved to Corvallis where they have since resided.
Mr Lovitt was a member of the Christian church. Survivors include his wife and two sons, Earl
E Lovitt, Los Angeles and Lon R Lovitt,
Wichita, Kan; three daughters Mrs Pearl May Beard,
Portland, Ore; Mrs Faye Long and Mrs Charles D Downing, both of Corvallis, Ore; six sisters, Mrs J E Drain, Lenox, Mrs Flo Grimm, Sharpsburg and four
other sisters, 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, also 2 brothers.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday with interment in the Oak Lawn Memorial park
cemetery.

F Spoonemore, 85, retired farmer, died at his home
Sunday afternoon. He was the last and youngest of a family of 12 children. Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at
the Bender Funeral home with Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Benjamin
Franklin Spoonemore was born at Isadora, Missouri,
April 28, 1875, and passed away at his home on Sunday, March 26, at the age of
85 years. He was the son of Henry and Frances Spoonemore. He was married to Mary M Spoonemore in 1899.
Mr Spoonemore lived in Isadora until 1909. He has lived
near Lenox the rest of his life. Mr Spoonemore is survived by his
wife Mary, two sons, Harry and Harvey of Lenox, 3 daughters Mrs Rolland (Nellie) Harper of Lenox, Mrs Carl (Faye)
Ingram of Des Moines and Mrs Ferrell (Ruby) Dow of
Broomfield, Colorado; 6 grandchildren, six great grandchildren. A son Glenn and a daughter Gertrude preceded
him in death.

Rev
E R Stroud died at the rest home Monday morning. He was minister of the Lenox
Methodist church from 1926 to 1930. He would have observed his 83rd birthday
Wednesday.
Funeral
services will be at the Methodist church here at 1:30 p m Thursday. Rev Robert Duckett will officiate. Burial will be in the Red Oak
cemetery. His body Is at the Bender
funeral home.
He
was born near Decorah, Iowa.
Rev
and Mrs Stroud had lived here since his retirement in
January, 1958. He had entered the rest home following a recent illness.
He
is survived by his widow, Minta; two sons, Charles of
Des Moines and Robert of Fort Dodge; a daughter, Mrs Virginia Chandlee of Des Moines; two step daughters, Mrs M J Spicer of Lenox and Mrs Darlene Lininger of Diagonal; a stepson, Daryl Benson of Albuquerque, N M
and eight grandchildren.

Stroud, Evan Roy -
Evan
Roy Stroud, son of Miles and Flora A. Stroud, was born Feb. 22, 1878, near
Decorah, la. At the age of four he moved
with his parents to Lyons Co., Kan., where he grew to manhood. He attended Kansas State Teachers College at
Emporia, and in preparation for the ministry, Garrett Biblical Institute,
Evanston, Ill., completing courses later at Simpson College, Indianola, and
York College in Nebraska. He took his first ministerial charge at the Pearl
Memorial Methodist Church at Omaha. Then in succession, he served Iowa
Methodist conference appointments at Tennant,
Dedham,
Walnut, Casey, Pleasantville, Carson, Red Oak circuit, Lenox, Farragut,
Redfield, and Malvern, retiring in 1941.
From
1914 until 1936, he was active as Scoutmaster, and he was one of the first
Iowans to receive the 20-year badge for service to Scouting. During this time
he became a member of the IOOF lodge, an affiliation which continued for 45
years. Rev. Stroud returned to the
ministry during the war years, serving Evangelical United Brethren churches on
the Talmadge circuit, also at Garwin,
Moravia, and Afton, completing a remarkable record of over half a century as
minister of the gospel.
Since
his retirement a second time in 1958, he and Mrs. Stroud had resided in Lenox,
where on Feb. 20, 1901, he passed away, just two days prior to his 83rd
birthday. He is survived by his widow, Minta; two
sons, Charles of Des Moines and Robert of Ft Dodge; a daughter, Mrs Virginia Chandlee of Des
Moines; two step daughters, Mrs Darleen
Lininger of Diagonal and Mrs Lauretta Splcer of Lenox; a stepson Daryl Benson of
Albuquerque and by ten grand children and four great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Dunbar.
The
funeral was Feb 23 at the Lenox Methodist church. Burial was at Red Oak.
