Bentley, Orville Leroy -

Bentley, Velma Edith Hewitt -

Mr. and Mrs. Orville Bentley, 70 and 69 respectively, were killed in a two-car accident one and a half miles northwest of Diagonal Oct. 11th. Mrs. Bentley was a sister of Mrs. Russell

Wurster of Lenox. The accident happed on the Hi and Dry road when the Bentleys were enroute south to their home after a visit with Mr. and. Mrs. Leroy Schlapia in their

farm home five miles northwest of Diagonal.

Authorities said Mr. Bentley was killed instantly and his wife died a few minutes later at the scene of the accident.

The Bentleys are survived by two sons, Willard and Robert of Diagonal, a daughter, Marjorie (Mrs. Keith Davis) of Ames, ten grandchildren and a great grandchild. Also a brother,

George Bentley and his sister, Bernice (Mrs.Ted Recknor), both of Portland, Ore.

Mrs. Bentley, the former Velma Edith Hewitt of Lenox, is survived by a brother, Ray Hewitt of Lenox and three sisters, Irene (Mrs. Russell Wurster) of Lenox and Lucille (Mrs.

Orville Shawler) and Helen (Mrs. Eugene Blazek) of Creston.

Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 14th from the auditorium of the Diagonal Community School.

Bentley, Orville Leroy -

Bentley, Velma Edith Hewitt -

Orville Leroy Bentley was born March 15, 1902, to George and Lillian Bentley at Clearfield, Iowa. He is survived by a sister, Bernice Recknor of Beaverton, Oregon and a brother,

George of Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Velma Edith Bentley was born July 11, 1903, to Charles and Edith Hewitt at Lenox. She is survived by three sisters, Lucille Showler and Helen Blazek both of Creston and Irene Wurster of Lenox and one brother, Ray Hewitt of Lenox. She taught school in Taylor and Adams counties before her marriage. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ralph, who died at the age of 13.

Orville and Velma were married May 12, 1923 at Creston. All of their married life was spent as farmers in Ringgold county except for a year in Union county. They were both

active in the community all their lives maintaining a vital interest in the church, the school and the neighborhood. In their 49 years together they enjoyed many common interests

and hobbies. Because of their friendly and outgoing natures, their circle of friends grew constantly.

Orville and Velma are survived by three children, Marjorie Davis of Ames, Willard and Robert of Diagonal, two daughters-in-law, Barbara and Carol Lee, and a son-in-law, Keith Davis. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Bill, Jim, Karen, Alan and Susan Bentley of Diagonal, Sheryl Bentley of Ames, Steve Davis of Mankato, Minn., Mark Davis and

Laticia Cook of Ames and Linda Silka of Oklahoma, one great grandchild, Ian Keith Davis, two grandsons-in-law, Lyle Silka and William Cook and one granddaughter-in-law, Deborah

Davis. A son, Donald H., died in infancy.

The lives of Velma and Orville were devoted to their family. They took great pride in their grandchildren, noting the accomplishments of each. Each child cherishes the many special

moments they were privileged to spend with their grandma and grandad. The heritage of love, devotion, integrity and goodness  which they leave will be an everlasting

influence on these lives.

Joint services were held Saturday, Oct. 14th at the Diagonal school auditorium with Rev. Franklin Schwarm officiating. Mrs. Harold Taylor was organist.

Casket bearers were John Rychnovsky, Lawrence Rychnovsky, David Wiley, LaVerne Adkisson, Don Goins, Jim Coins, Paul Dailey, Dale Bickel, John Sickels, Claire Newton, Gene

Gunsolley and Bernard Sobotka. Burial was in Bethel cemetery.

Bivens, Arthur Grant -

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 28, 1972 from the Sutphen Funeral Home at Villisca for Arthur G. Bivens. The Rev, Eldon Haworth officiated.

Pallbearers were Ralph Peterson, Robert Gourley, Roy Smith, Birge Geer, Grover Warnaca and Gary Refer.

Flower bearers were Mr. Roy Smith and Mrs. Martina Shrimpton.

Interment and concluding services were at the Villisca, Ia. cemetery.

Arthur Grant Bivens was born in Adams County, Iowa, on May 29, 1901, the son of Sidney G. Bivens and Della Watson Bivens.

He died at Murphy Memorial hospital in Red Oak on October 26, 1972.

Art farmed most of his early life, then worked in a coal mine for a time, and for 22 years worked for the Burlington Railroad, retiring several years ago.

He was united1 in marriage to Eva Ann Cayer on February 28, 1940.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Surviving are his wife, Eva, a sister, Mrs. Albert (Lula) Nicholson of Lenox, his nieces and nephews and friends.

Burnham, Myrtle Hunt -

Donald Douglas of Prescott, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Tully, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Beck and Mr. and Mrs. Delman Brown attended funeral services Nov.

27th of their aunt, Mrs. Myrtle Burnham at Lincoln, Nebr.

Myrtle Hunt, daughter of Clark and Frances Wilcox Hunt was born April 1, 1877, on a farm two miles west of Lenox, Iowa (where Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wurster now live.) She

passed away Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1972, at the age of 95 years and 7 months at Alliance, Nebr., where she had moved four years ago to be near her son, Dr. Arnold Burnham.

At the age of seven, she moved with her parents, in a covered wagon, to Burchard, Nebr. She and Mrs. D. Gilbert Douglas were sisters.

October 3, 1902 she was married to Lyvene Burnharn, a Christian minister and to this union were born seven children.

Surviving are two sons, two daughters, fifteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nephews and nieces and several cousins in the Lenox vicinity. "Aunt Mate" was a very

cheerful, loving person with a great sense of humor, and will be greatly missed by her loved ones. She has been the "second mother" to the Douglas family the past 27 years.

Funeral services were conducted from the Bethany Christian church, Lincoln, Nebraska, and interment was in the Liberty, Nebraska cemetery. The five nephews from Lenox, and

a nephew, Ed Sejkora of Liberty were pallbearers.

Buxton, Lloyd A -

Lloyd A. Buxton died at his home in Creston, Iowa, Nov. 14, 1972 at the age of 79.years.

Lloyd Buxton, son of Robert and Mary Woodward Buxton, was born on a farm south of Stringtown October 29, 1893.

He was united in marriage to Lillion Fair Jan. 14, 1914. To this union was born a son, Bernard.

Mr. Buxton was employed by the Burlington railroad for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alfred and Clifford, and one sister, Aldia Case.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, a son, Bernard, his wife Pat, and two grandsons, Mike and Bob all of Des Moines. Also surviving are two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Donald Hill

of Corning, Mrs Thelma White of Tyler, Texas and Clifford Buxton of Creston.

Funeral services were held at the Coen Home for Funerals Nov. 17th at 1p.m.

Interment was in the Stringtown cemetery.

Carruthers, Rena Dell Hamilton -

Rena Dell Carruthers, 77, of LaPlata, Mo, died at a Kirksville hospital Monday night, October 16 where she had been admitted earlier that day. She had been in failing health for

several months.

The daughter of George W. and Anna Wickless Hamilton, she was born March 2, 1895 in Schuyler county. On Feb. 28th, 1922 at Des Moines, Iowa, she was married to Leo Bernard

Carruthers who survives. Also surviving are one brother, Elbert Hamilton of Verdi, Nev., and one sister, Mrs. K. O. (Bertha) Marlin of Burlingame, Cal.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Carruthers was reared in Lancaster where she attended public schools. She was a graduate of the Lancaster High school and Northeast Missouri State University. Following her education she taught schools in Livonia and Lenox, Iowa for several years. From 1937 until 1940 she traveled with her husband at his employment. For the next seven years she and her husband resided near Ft. Leonard Wood. From 1947 until 1960 she again traveled with her husband. Following Mr. Carruthers' retirement they moved to LaPlata where they have since resided.

Mrs. Carruthers was a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 127 at Lancaster and the American Legion Auxiliary at LaPlata. She was also a member of the Lancaster United

Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock in the Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in LaPlata.

Burial was in the LaPlata Cemetery.

Cook, Mary Agnes Trost -

Mary A. Cook, 80, passed away Thursday, November 23rd, 1972 at the Lenox Nursing home where she had resided for the past three years.

Mary Agnes Cook, daughter of George and Margaretta Stanger Trost, was born in Dettingen, Germany on February 23, 1892. At the age of ten she came to the United States with

her parents to make her home and has since lived in and around the Lenox community.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lenox.

On October 14, 1914, she was united in marriage to Chauncey G. Cook and to this union three children were born, Helen, George and Betty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, Helen, a son-in-law, Floyd Springer, two brothers, Harry and George Trost and an infant sister, Anna.

Besides her two children, she is survived  by one brother, Joe Trost of Lenox, and four sisters, Frieda Boltinghouse of Lenox, Pauline Morgan and Emma Woods of West Salem,

Wisconsin, and Rose Noerrlinger of Sheldon, Wisconsin. She is also survived by one daughter-in-law, Roberta Cook of Clearfield, one son-in-law, Wayne O'Riley of Lenox and seven

grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. James Springer of Waterloo, Virginia Lee Cook of Des Moines, Suanne and Ilene Cook of Clearfield, Mr and Mrs Stephen O'Riley of Ames, Craig and Kirk O'Riley of Lenox.

Three great grandchildren, Kelly, Kerry and Todd Springer also survive. Also mourning her passing are fifteen nieces and nephews.

Among some of the greatest joys she had was being around her family, gardening, and cooking.

Mrs. Cook was a kind and loving Mother and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 25th at 2 p.m., from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev Wallace Nelson, pastor of  the United Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Bearers were Don Trost, Gene Trost, Raymond Trost, Bill Reed, Joe Olynick and Howard Poore.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Eberle, Emma -

Mrs. John (Emma) Eberle, 86, former Lenox resident, died October 29th at St. Joseph's hospital, Brainerd, Minnesota, after suffering a stroke Oct. 8th.

Mrs. Eberle was born Oct. 11, 1886 in Appanoose county, Ia.

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox, a fifty year member and former Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors are her son, Richard Barton and his wife, Virginia of Pine River, Minnesota, one granddaughter, Eleanor Knold and her husband, Donald Knold and two great grandchildren,

Jennifer and Richard Knold of Brainerd, Minn.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Nov. 2nd at 10:00 am at the Miller Wehrle Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa, with interment in Oakland cemetery there.

Hiley, Wilda R -

Wilda R. Hiley died suddenly while at work in Glenwood, Ia., November 21, 1972 at the age of 80 years. He was the father of Mrs. Willard Campbell of the Lenox area.

Mr. Hiley was born in McFall, Missouri June 15, 1892 to John and Silva Martin Hiley. He grew up in the Kent vicinity. After his marriage to Bertha Anderson

on January 20, 1912 they spent all their married life around the Creston, Kent and Lenox areas except one year in South Dakota.

Eleven children were born to this union. Mrs. Hiley passed away in 1951.

He was later married to Eunice Malone who survives, along with four sons, Ray of Glenwood, Art of Avoca, Donald of San Diego, Calif., Russell of Atlantic Beach, Florida, five

daughters, Mrs. Willard Campbell of Lenox, Mrs. Peter Andersen of Newport, Richle, Fla., Mrs. Henry Parks, Boulder, Colorado, Mrs. Chester Sellers of Glenwood, Mrs. Edd

Hill of Omaha, Nebr., two step-sons, Jack Malone of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Donald P. of California.

Two brothers, Velda of Corning and Nelson of Burlington Junction, Mo., two sisters, Hazel Snyder and Myrtle Woosley of California, thirty two grandchildren and 12 great

grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Carl, 18 months, and Dean while serving his country in World War II, also one brother Dorsa.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Glenwood, Iowa Saturday, November 25, 1972 with Rev. Clyde Harmon officiating.

Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Kanoff, Edna J -

Mrs. Edna J. (Ely) Kanoff, wife of John H. Kanoff, 2717 Arrow Highway, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 8, 1972, in a Pomona convalescent home following a long illness.

Mrs. Kanoff was born Feb. 16, 1900 in Corning, Iowa. She went to Pomona in 1920 and had been a resident there for 52 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Frances Gallison of Santa Maria, Mrs. Muriel Sommers of Hayward and Mrs. Erma Crouch of Lincoln, Nebr., two brothers, James Ely of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Bert Ely of Bedford, Iowa, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1972, at 1:30 p.m. in Todd Memorial Chapel, Pomona, with the Rev. George A. Wilson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church,

Pomona, officiating. Entombment was made in Pomona Mausoleum.

Friends made memorial contributions to the Los Angeles County Heart Association.

Pierce, Richard Haldean -

Richard H. Pierce, 34, of Des Moines, passed away at Veterans hospital Wednesday, Nov. 22nd at 3:45 p.m. Mr. Pierce had been in the hospital since August 20th. He was a former

resident of Clearfield.

Richard Haldean Pierce was born at Clearfield, Iowa, on Jan. 11, 1938 . He was the son of Hal H. and Treva Boltinghouse Pierce. He attended Clearfield Community school,

and joined the navy in 1955, receiving his discharge in 1959.

He was married at Creston Dec. 27, 1960 to Virginia Keller. They lived at Joliet, Ill., and Des Moines, Iowa. He was a machine operator.

He is survived by his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Pierce, two brothers, Gary of Des Moines, and Mick of Clearfield, one sister, Jo Anne Nauman of Des Moines, two grandmothers, Mrs. Mabel Boltinghouse of Lenox and Mrs. Budd Chamberlain of Bedford. Two nieces and one nephew also survive.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Keating-McKasson funeral home in Creston. Burial was at Graceland cemetery.

Casket bearers were Darl Bell, Gaylan Belli, Russell Ambrose, Leroy Waddell, Charles Miller and Loren Oxenrider.

The family established a memorial fund for the Cancer fund.

Reynolds, Annis Mae Trost -

Mrs. Pearl (Annis) Reynolds,  long-time resident of the Lenox community, died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Thursday, November 23rd. She had been a patient in the hospital eight days. She was 75 at the time of her death.

Annis Mae Trost, the daughter of Christopher and Roxie Lee Trost was born in Taylor county on Aug. 13th, 1897.

She was united in marriage to Pearl Reynolds on February 12, 1919. To this union six children were born, one son, Harold preceding her in death during World War II. She is

survived by her husband, Pearl, two sons, Gerald of Gardena, Calif., Robert of Lenox, and four daughters, Mrs. Jack (Adelyn) Cox of Phelps, Wisc., Mrs. Fred (Evelyn) Ver Steeg

of Altoona, Mrs. Roy (Virginia) Bennett and Mrs. Gene (Betty) Holben of Lenox, 14 grandchildren and three sisters, Carrie Bunn and Alta Eberle, both of Lenox and Martha Pfander of Corning, also a host of nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church for 52 years and held offices in many organizations in the community in the past years and was happiest when she was busy. She had been president of the WSCS, Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, president American Legion Auxiliary and chairman of the Taylor County Bloodmobile.

She will be greatly missed by her family and the community.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 26th at 2 pm from the United Methodist church with Rev. Floyd; Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Norma Paymal.

Bearers were Dale Eberle, Don Bunn, Dick Eberle, Don Pfander, George Young and George Reynolds.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Stapleton, Goldie Meier -

Goldie Stapleton, 63, died Thursday, Nov. 23rd at her home of a sudden heart attack.

Goldie Stapleton, daughter of Joseph Henry and Minnie Mason Meier was born May 28th, 1909 at Burlington, Iowa, and passed away Nov. 23 at her home, 411 W. Ohio street in

Lenox, Iowa at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 26 days.

She was united in marriage July 8, 1925 to Walter Stapleton of Lenox, Iowa, at Wapello, Ia.

To this union, one daughter, Gweneth, was born. Goldie was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Vice President of the Altar Society of

the church for many years.

Mrs. Stapleton is survived by her husband, Walter, one daughter, Mrs. Dean Larimer, and two grandsons, Dick of Lenox and Terry who is serving in the United States Air Force,

stationed at Langley AFB, Virginia.

Also surviving is one brother, Joseph Meier of Lenox, a sister, Elsie Wasson of Burlington, Iowa, and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, five brothers and one half brother. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who have known her.

Rosary was said by Father Reginald Maslinski Sunday at 8 pm at the Bender Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at the St. Patrick's Church in Lenox, Iowa, on Monday, Nov. 27th at 10 am with Father Reginald Maslinski, Father Adam Reisz and Father Nelo

Leto officiating.

Bearers were Larry Bradley, Joe Mulford, Hubert Bradley, Richard Notz, George Rice and John Kessler.

Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery at Lenox.

Willbee, Robert -

Word was received here Monday morning of the death of Robert Willbee, 52, of Waverly.

He died suddenly of a heart attack at his home Sunday morning.

He was a cousin of William, Kenneth, Richard and George Young of Lenox.

Wilson, Alice Ethyl Cavner -

Alice Wilson, mother of Mrs. James Wasson of Lenox, and a former resident here, died at Clarinda Wednesday, December 5th.

Alice Ethel Wilson, daughter of Samuel and Grace Cavner, was born March 1, 1923 at Conway in Taylor county and passed away at Clarinda, at the age of 49 years, 9

months and 5 days.

She was united in marriage to Eldon Wilson March 8, 1941 and to this union were born 3 children, William E. Wilson of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. James Alice Wasson of Lenox

and Robert Eldon at home.

Mr. Wilson preceded her in death in November, 1969.

She is survived by her children, 7 grandchildren, two sisters, Dorothy Church of Derby, Iowa and Nadine Woohverton of Indianola, Ia., two brothers, Donald Cavner of Chinook,

Montana and Jerry Cavner of Council Bluffs; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novlnger funeral home at Bedford at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist Church in

Lenox, officiating.

Music was furnished by Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker.

Burial was in the Conway cemetery.
