Bennett, Flora -
Funeral
services for Flora Bennett, were held Tuesday, Nov. 13th at 2 pm, at the United
Clearfield Methodist Church with Mrs. Helen Brown officiating.
Flora
Bennett, daughter of George D. and Alice Bennett, was born on a farm near Lenox
Dec. 20, l892.
She
was a member of the United Methodist Church and graduated from Lenox high
school.
She
taught school several years and graduated from Iowa Bible training school in
June of 1920 as a Deaconess in the Methodist Church. She served in this position 25 years working
at Settlement work and as minister's assistant.
Failing
health and her father's old age caused her to return home where she lived with
her sister until December, 1971 when she entered a convalescent care center.
She
passed away Nov 10, 1973.
She
leaves one sister, Marie, on the old home place, one brother, Donald near
Clearfield, two sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and many friends made in her
work. One brother, David, preceded her
in death.
Burial
was in the Lenox cemetery.

E. Bice, 72, former Lenox. resident, died Sept. 18,
1973 at Tucson, Arizona.
Among
survivors are his wife, Hannah, a daughter, Pauline Sprague, three sisters Mrs.
Hazel Massey, Mrs. Ethel Wiley, Mrs. Myrtle Smith, two brothers Dale Bice and
Guy Bice and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held at Bring's Memorial Chapel Friday
morning, Sept. 21st at 11 o'clock.
Burial
was to Tucson Memorial Park, South Lawn.

Guy Brown, 85, a resident of Lenox for
about 8 years died at the Creston Nursing Home in Creston, Monday Nov.
12th. Mr Brown
had been in ill health for several years as a result of hardening of the arteries
and complications.
Funeral services will be today
(Thursday) at 2 pm from the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.
Burial will be in the Cemetery at
Gravity, Iowa.

rites were held for Guy Brown., Lenox resident, at the Shum-Novinger Funeral
Home in Bedford Thursday Nov 15th at 2 pm.
Guy
Roy Brown, youngest child of David and Mattie Brown, was born near Sharpsburg,
Iowa, Aug. 13, 1888, and passed away Nov. 12, 1973 at the Crest Haven Care
Center in
Creston,
Iowa, at the age of 85 years and 3 months.
On
Oct. 29th, 1913, he was united in marriage to Grace Piper of Sharpsburg, Iowa.
To this union two children were born, Irene Kadau and
Harold Brown of Michigan.
He was
preceded in death by his wife, Grace, two sons-in-law, Harold Campbell in 1950
and Carles Kadau in 1970, 3
sisters and 2 brothers.
In
1942 he was united in marriage to Susie Taylor of Lenox, He is survived by his
wife, 2 children, Irene Kadau, Harold and wife,
Leona, four grandchildren, Rodric Campbell and wife JoAnn, Stephen, Dennis and Barbara Brown, two great
grandchildren, Scott and Todd Campbell and a host of relatives and friends.
He was a kind and loving husband,
father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Rev Wallace Nelson, pastor of the Lenox
Presbyterian Church officiated at the services. Music was furnished by Linda Spring, soloist and Donna Cribbs, organist.
Bearers
were Bob Brown, Donald Trost, Robert Brown, Donald
Donaldson, Richard Fitzgerald and Francis Brown.
Burial
was in Washington cemetery at Gravity, Iowa.

James
Brown, long-time farmer of the Lenox area, died Friday afternoon following a
lengthy illness,
James
H. Brown, son of Martha and Benjamin Brown, was born Sept. 13, 1910 near
Corning, Iowa, in Adams county, la., and passed away Sept. 28, 1973 at the age
of 63 years and 15
days.
Mr.
Brown spent his childhood near Prescott, Iowa, and was united in marriage to
Viola Riggle May 27, 1932. They moved near Lenox,
Iowa, where he spent his life farming and
raising
his family whom he loved dearly.
He
was a kind and loving husband and father who always did what he thought best
for his wife and family.
His
hobby was raising and showing hunting dogs, and his efforts were richly
rewarded by trophies and plaques as his dogs won many top prizes in midwestern contests.
He
enjoyed his many friends, neighbors and hunting companions during the years.
Mr.
Brown was preceded in death by Benjamin Franklin Brown, his father, three half
brothers, Glenn Brown, Hugh Fisher and Charley Brown, a half sister, Enola
Brown and one great grandson, Timothy Richey.
He
leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Viola, four children, Raymond Brown and his
wife Genevieve of Lenox, Shirley Rainforth and her
husband Dick of Gravity, Iowa, Phyllis
Morris
and her husband, Jim of Blockton and Elaine Claiser and her husband Roger of Kent, Iowa, thirteen
grandchildren and 1 grandson-in-law. Other survivors are this mother, Martha
Pearson of Creston, Iowa, one half sister, Goldie Schowalter of Creston and a sister, Evelyn Reed of Creston, plus a host of nieces and
nephews.
Jim
was always a great help to anyone in need and honest in all his dealings. He
loved every minute of his life and duties and saw some enjoyment in each task
performed.
Funeral
services were held at the Bender Funeral Home at Lenox at 2 pan. Monday, Oct.
list with Rev, Arthur McGinnis officiating.
Bearers
were Lewis Rice; Glen Norton, Charley Brink, Orville Reed, Kenneth Henshaw and Wilson Longfellow.
Honorary bearers were Roy Allen, H, Norton, Ernest
Baker, Paul Richey, Tom Ferguson, and
Gene Van Orsdal.
Music
was furnished by Norma Paymal and Roger Brown.
Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery

Gerald Emig,
56, of Lenox died at St. Joseph's hospital in Omaha, Neb. Sunday evening after
an extended illness.
Mr Emig is survived by his widow, Darlene, four sons,
Gary and Larry of Eagleville, Mo., Jerry of Blythedale,
Mo. and Rodney Emig at home, three daughters, Mrs Robert (Karyn) Graham of
Benton, Mrs Don (Donna) Hardisty of Corning and Mrs Donald (Darla) Brown of Gulfpoint, Miss, eight grandchildren, two brothers, Wayne
of Lamoni and Harold of Marion and a sister, Mrs Lawrence Combs of Mt Ayr. A half sister, Mrs Russell Laird of Bedford, also survives.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.
today (Thursday) at the Christian church in Kellerton. Rev. Cela Fugate
will officiate.
Burial will be in Maple Row Cemetery at
Diagonal.
Varner Funeral Home at Diagonal will be
in charge of the service.

Emig,
Gerald Henry -
Gerald
Henry Emig, son of Charles and Lizzie Emig, was born in Decatur County, near Lamoni,
Iowa January 20, 1917. He departed this life Oct. 28, 1973 at St. Joseph
Hospital at
Omaha,
Nebr., from a long and suffering illness.
His
childhood was spent around Kellerton and Lamoni, Iowa.
On
Nov. 26, 1938, he was united in marriage with Darlene Lantz. To this union
seven children were born.
He
liked his work of farming and feeding cattle. He enjoyed coon hunting and was a
member of Taylor County Coon Hunters Association at Sharpsburg, Iowa.
On
May 14, 1944 he gave his heart to Christ at the Christian Church at Kellerton, Iowa.
Survivors
to cherish his memory are his wife, Darlene, the seven children and eleven
grandchildren, Charles Gary and wife Linda, children Tommy and Cherri of
Eagleville, Mo.,
Larry
Lee and wife Carol and children Kirk and Kerri Sue of Eagleville, Mo., Karyn Kay Graham and husband Bob, children Robbie and Kelli of Benton, Iowa, Donna Rae Hardisty
and
husband, Don and son David of Corning, Iowa, Darla Diann Brown, husband Donnie and daughter, Dawn of Gulfport, Miss., Jerry Lynn and
wife Lynn of Blythedale, Mo.,
Rodney
Alan of home in Lenox.
Other
survivors include two brothers, Harold and wife Mardell of Marion, Iowa, Wayne and wife Helen of Lamoni, Ia.,
one sister Grace Combs and husband Lawrence of Mt Ayr,
one half sister, Mrs Winnie Laird and husband,
Russell of Bedford, a brother-in-law Vernon Lantz and wife Vera, one
sister-in-law, Miss Vernadette Lantz, all of Beaconfield, Ia., several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.
He
always took pride in his work and enjoyed his home and family, children and
grandchildren and will be sadly missed in the home.

Carl
Gold, 62, formerly of Bedford and Sharpsburg, died Tuesday morning at Enumclau,
Washington after a short illness.
He
was the father of Richard Gold of Council Bluffs who flew to Washington
Saturday evening after learning his father was on the critical list. Richard is
married to the former Carolyn Beadel.

Allen
Jackson Hoskinson, 80, father of Mrs. Glenn Brokaw, died
at Rosary hospital in Corning Saturday, Sept. 29th. He had been in failing
health for a number of years but
had been in the hospital only 10 days.
He
was born February 28, 1893 at the Hoskinson homestead
northeast of Corning, the son of Elmer and Robina McBain Hoskinson.
On
July 12, 1925, he was married to Fern Bixler at the
home of her parents west of Corning. She preceded him in death Jan. 6, 1959.
He
joined the Methodist Church in his youth, but in later years transferred his
membership to the Cromwell Congregational Church.
His
love for children was well known and he especially cherished his sixteen
grandchildren.
As a
young man he studied music at Highland Park College in Des Moines. He was a
veteran of World War I. After returning from military service he began farming
and continued
as a
farmer until retiring in 1958.
He
served a term as a supervisor in Adams county and was for a number of years the
clerk of Union township. He lived all his life in Adams Co. with the
exceptional of the time
spent
in the army.
He
was preceded in death by his wife and four sisters, Mable, Gladys, Lillian and
Frances.
He
is survived by one son, Allen J. Hoskinson, Jr. of
Creston, two daughters, Mrs. Martha Alves of
Bellevue, Nebr., and Mrs. Elizabeth Brokaw of Lenox, a sister, Mrs. Grace Bay
of
Creston, three brothers, Robert of Creston, Frank of Corning and Jerrold of
Summit, N. J., 10 grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning Tuesday, Oct. 2nd at 2
o'clock with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished by Dorothy Cook, Priscilla Hogan and Debbie King.
Bearers
were Craig Hoskinson, Allen J, Hoskinson III, Steven Hoskinson, Jon Brokaw, Joel Brokaw and
Timothy Alves.
Burial
was in Walnut Grove cemetery.

was the mother of Lester McKay of Sharpsburg.

Mrs.
Lillie Menoher, 100, a long time resident of the
Lenox community, died at Rosary hospital in Corning Monday where she had been a
patient about two weeks.
Mrs. Menoher reached her 100 birthday on Saturday, May
19th this year and a special open house celebration was planned and carried out
in her honor at Colonial Manor in Corning on Sunday, May 20th. Mrs Menoher had been a resident
of the Manor for several years.
Lillie
Monahan was born May 19, 1873 at Guilford, Mo., and moved to Iowa with her
parents at the age of 6 months. She was
the last member of a family of 10 that grew to adulthood.
Her
mother was Sarah Walker Monahan and her father was James Monahan, a Civil War
veteran.
She
graduated from Gravity high school and attended Amity College at College
Springs and Simpson College at Indianola. She taught school for a number of
years.
She
was married to Charles Menoher Aug. 12, 1902 and they
lived in Gravity, her husband being a partner with his brother in the
Mercantile business.
They
moved to Dallas County, Texas in 1909 and returned to Taylor County to 1913.
They were the parents of one son, Wade Lament who attended the schools in
Lenox.
After
Mr. Menoher died at his home Dec. 30, 1939, Lillie remained in her home for a few
years then moved into an apartment.
Survivors
include one grandson and family living near Boulder, Colo,
Michael, his wife Mary Ann and three great granddaughters, Carol, Deborah and
Judy Lynn. She is also survived
by
other nieces and
nephews.
She
had long been a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox and took an active part
in Methodist Women's organizations. She
also served as a Sunday school teacher for a number of years.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at
2:30 in the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery
in Lenox.

Merle
Phillip Moore passed away at his home of a heart attack Sunday, October 14th,
1973 at 3 pm at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 21 days.
He
was born January 23, 1907 at the home of his parents 7 miles southwest of
Corning, Ia. in Adams county, where he spent his childhood. He was the second
son of Albert and Mary Moore.
On
Sept. 5, 1926 he was united in marriage to Daisy Hunter of Bedford, Iowa. They
moved to their present home in the spring of 1942. He was a farmer all his
life, also doing other work for several years. He drove a school bus for quite
some time and did carpenter work.
He
and his wife were the parents of two children, Kenneth Saul who died in infancy
and Mary Kathryn Bishop of Indianola, Iowa.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Daisy, daughter Kathy and husband Donald
Bishop of Indianola, two grandsons whom he loved very much, Kenneth Eugene
Werner and Gregory Michael Anderson, 3 brothers, Harold of Nodaway, Iowa, Carl
of Corning, Iowa and Wayne of San Diego, Calif.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Kenneth.
Mr Moore united with the Fairview Christian Church 9 miles southwest of Corning,
Ia. when a small boy.
He
was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, a friend to many and was
honest in his dealings with all.
He
leaves many friends and other relatives along with his family to mourn him, and
will be sadly missed by all.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 17th at 2 pm. from the Bender
Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Floyd Newbrough,
pastor of the Lenox United Methodist Church officiating.
Music
was furnished by Billie Jean Barker, Marilyn Beck and Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Gene Mains, Charles Samo, Karl Sundell, Orviile Plants, Melvin
Strait and Gerald Boydston.
Burial was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.

Walter N Scott, 84, of Sharpsburg, died
at the Lenox Care Center early Monday.
He is survived by two sons, Don Scott

Funeral services were held Wednesday
afternoon at 2 pm from the United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg with Rev LaMonte Brown, officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs Harold Spring and Mrs Duane
Beck.
Bearers were Roy Beck, Dean Posten, Joe Brammer, James
Larson, Ray Peterman and Thurman Curphey.

Scott, Walter Norton -
Walter
Norton Scott was born August 5, 1889 on a farm north of Gravity near the
Oakhill Church where he spent his childhood. He passed away at the age of 84
years, 4 months
and
5 days. He was the son of Nelson Cornelious and Laura
Combs Scott.
He
was united in marriage to Violet Susan Knott Oct. 17, 1906. To this union five
children were born, Mrs. Faye Ratliff of Sharpsburg, twin daughters Hazel of
Bedford, Helen deceased, Bill and Donald of Sharpsburg.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, daughter Helen, his parents, one
brother, William and four sisters, Mertie, Thresa, Dora and Fannie.
At
an early age he joined the Oak Hill Church and later transferred his membership
to the Sharpsburg Methodist Church. He has farmed and lived in the Gravity and
Sharpsburg
communities
all his life.
He
is survived by his four children, one sister, Ester Welch of Clarinda, a half
brother, Mark Scott of Arensas Pass, Texas, one
son-in-law, Leonard Ratliff, two daughters-in-law,
Nellie
and Doris Scott, eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and two
great, great grandchildren.
He
was a good neighbor, a kind and loving father. He will be greatly missed by his
family and friends.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, Dec. 12th at 2 p.m. from the United Methodist Church
in Sharpsburg with Rev. LaMonte Brown officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mrs. Harold Spring and Mrs. Duane Beck.

Leonard
Andrew Sobotka was born at Diagonal, Iowa, Oct. 13,
1922. He was the son of Edward and Beulah Roudybush Sobotka. Following a recent illness he passed away Sept.
29, 1973 at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 50 years,
11 months and 16 days.
Leonard
spent his boyhood life in rural Diagonal and attended grade and high school and
the Methodist Church there. In February, 1943, he entered military service
where he
served
with the 29th Cavalry Reconn Transportation
Division. He served overseas duty for
two years in northern France and central Europe then received an honorable
discharge from the army in 1946.
He
was married to Venita Shirlene Kirby at Mount Ayr, Iowa June 14, 1947. To this union
were born three children, Connie Sue, Karen Rae and Duane Lee.
He
loved outdoor life and was proud to be a farmer. He owned and operated heavy
construction equipment for 20 years and in 1965 became a member of the
Clearfield Christian
Church.
He was a member of the Legion and Lions Clubs and a lifetime member of the Creston
VFW club. Most of his life time was enjoyed in Ringgold and Taylor counties.
He
was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah and father, Edward.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Venita and son
Duane at home, two daughters, Connie Cooper and his son-in-law, Dennis of Grand
Forks, No. Dak., Karen Schaefer and his
son-in-law,
Michel of rural Diagonal, 3 grandchildren, Jackie DeLee Cooper and Jennifer Jo, and Billy Joe Schaefer. Other survivors include his
step mother, Frances Sobotka of Diagonal, a brother
Donald of Beaconsfield, a sister, Norma Jean Lumbard of Shannon City, two half-brothers, Ivan of Diagonal and David of Maloy, their wives and families, many aunts, uncles and a
host of other relatives and friends.
Final
rites were conducted Monday .from the Christian Church in Clearfield at 2 p.m.
with Rev. L. C. Brown, United Methodist minister, officiating.
Music
was furnished by Darl Bell of Lorimor,
soloist, with Mrs. Robert Lookhart, of Lenox
accompanist.
Casket
bearers were Darwin Sollars, Ivan Longfellow, Orvin Larson, Kenneth Morris, James Herrington and David
Stephens.
Burial
was in Diagonal cemetery with military rites by the Creston VFW and Clearfield
Legion Post.

Mildred
Travis, 51, 220 N. 2nd Street, died Monday, October 29, 1973 at a Council
Bluffs convalescent home after a long illness. She suffered a stroke a number of years ago and had been a patient
sufferer since that time.
She
was born at Lenox, Iowa, and had resided 40 years in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She
was employed as a contact lens technician for an Omaha optical company for
several years.
She
served as senior regent in Women of Moose in 1965.
Survivors
include her husband, George D, three daughters, Mrs Sharon Wheeler, Mrs Trudy Carmichael and Mrs Judy Lovelady all of Council Bluffs, her mother, Mrs.
Mary Curts of Monroe City, Mo. a sister, Mrs Clella Brendle of Omaha and seven grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday Nov 1st at the Woodring Chapel with Rev Paul Somerville officiating. Interment at Neola Cemetery.
Mildred
was a granddaughter of the late Mrs Kate Miller and
had spent many times here with relatives and friends.
Relatives
attending services were Mr and Mrs James Calvin, Mr and Mrs Dick Gray, Mr and Mrs Cleo Stoaks, Mrs Clyde Miller,
Katherine Wynn, Harry Miller and Raymond Miller.

Herbert
Tully, 87, long-time resident of the Lenox community, died Thursday of a sudden
heart attack at his home.
Herbert
D. Tully, second son of Andrew and Mary Davidson Tully, was born March 13, 1886
on a farm 5 miles northeast of Lenox. He attended rural school and the Lenox
high
school.
He joined the United Presbyterian Church at an early age.
On
October 22, 1907 he was united in marriage to Mazie Copeland at her family home on North Main in Lenox. To this union one son,
Donald, was born.
He
is survived by his beloved wife, Mazie, his son,
Donald and wife Mineva, two granddaughters, Gwen Maynes and husband, Harold, Bonnie Schrader and husband
Larry and

great grandchildren, all of Lenox. He is also survived by a sister, Vera Roll
of Lenox and a brother, Bruce Tully of Detroit, several nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Melville and one sister, Lela
Long.
He
lived for 48 years on the home farm west of Lenox and took much pride in his
chosen occupation. He also took an active part in church and school activities
and served as an Elder to the church and many years as school director. He and
his wife retired to their present home in Lenox in 1958.
His
two granddaughters and 12 great grandchildren were a real joy to him and each
one had a special place in his heart.
Funeral
services were held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20th at 2 p.m., from the United
Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Bearers
were Ray Cheese, Marvin Reed, Harold Beck, Melvin Williams, Orville Rogers and Delman Brown.
Honorary
bearers were Glen Douglas, Don Douglas, Max Shipley, George Schrader, Ben Wurstex and Cecil Maharry.
Music
was furnished by Mildred Walter and Roberta Lockhart.
Burial
was in North Fairview cemetery.
