Beck, Johnny -
Funeral
services for Johnny Beck, 80, former Reinbeck area farmer, were held Saturday,
June 5th at Ozark, Mo., in the Selmore Christian
Church with Rev. Faust Mathews
officiating.
Burial was made in the Selmore cemetery at Ozark,
Mo., with Harris Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr.
Beck died Wednesday afternoon at Fremont Manor in Springfield.
He
was a native of Lenox, Iowa and moved to Reinbeck in 1943. He farmed in that
community until September of 1945 when he retired and moved to Ozark. He served
with
the
U. S. Army during World War I in France. He was an active member of the United
Church of Christ while living in Reinbeck and later in the Selmore Christian Church at
Ozark,
Mo. He served on the Board of Directors of Coop. Assn. and on Church boards and
committees. He was buried in a plat in
the Selmore cemetery near his grandson,
Scott
Beck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Beck, who was killed in an accident two years
ago.
Survivors
include his wife, Pauline; two sons, Vernon of Grants Pass, Oregon and Kenneth
of Springfield, Mo., 3 sisters, Mary Morris and Rose Beck of Lenox, Iowa and
Miss
Beckie Beck of St. Joe. Mo., a brother, Herman Beck of Mesa, Arizona, a half brother,
Charlie Beck of Lenox, also seven grandchildren.
Mrs.

Birney, Claudia Alice Hatchett Severn -
Claudia
Alice Birney passed away July 27, 1976 at the Mary Greeley hospital, Ames,
Iowa. She had been in the South Riverside nursing home in Ames for the past
three
years
and had been in failing health for some time.
She
was the daughter of Budd and Rose Hatchett and was
born January 21st, 1890 at Edinburg, Illinois.
She
came to Iowa with her parents when she was a small child and they settled on a
farm near Bedford, Iowa. She grew to womanhood in Conway, Iowa.
On
April 10, 1913 she was married to William (Bill) Severn at Bedford. He preceded
her in death March 20, 1947.
She
then moved to Ames, la., and worked in a nursing home.
She
met Russell Birney and they were married July 15th, 1956. He preceded her in
death June 16, 1969. Also her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
She
is survived by her sister, Grace Adair of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; two nephews, Maynard
Adair of Ft. Dodge, Howard Dotts of Hacienda Heights,
California; two nieces, Mrs.
Rex
(Ilene) Johnson of Des Moines, la.; Mrs. Alice Trotman of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She
was laid to rest by her first husband in the Lenox cemetery.

Brammer, Ethel -
Ethel Brammer, 86, passed away at the Rosary hospital, in
Corning June 9th. She was born Dec. 15, 1889 and was the mother of twelve
children. Her husband, four
sons
and three daughters preceded her in death.
She
was a member of The Latter Day Saints. Her life was a Christian life, loving
and helping all that she could. She enjoyed her rock garden and flowers. She will
be missed by
all
who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Brammer had spent the past four years at the home of
her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne McFee.
A quote by her son, Dick Brammer: "If we were
just
half
as good as she wanted us to be we wouldn't have a worry or care in this
world."
Survivors
include Mrs. Wayne McFee of Lenox, Mrs. Ray Renk of Winterset, Iowa; Joe Brammer of Sharpsburg, Dick Brammer of Lenox and Don
McPherson of LaMors, Colo.

services were held Saturday, June 12th at 2:00 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender
Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Watson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church
officiating.

was furnished by Roberta Lockhart.
Casket
bearers were David Bell, Harley Morley, Kenneth McFee,
John Borland, Ernest Campbell and Danny Fetchall.
Interment
was in Graceland cemetery at Creston, la.

Clarence
Cline of Van Wert, Ohio and husband of Veva Butler
Cline had a severe stroke several weeks ago and then had a heart attack Sunday,
June 20th and passed away
that
day. He was buried in Van Wert, Ohio June 23rd.
Mr.
Cline had taught school and coached for 38 years. He had just retired 2 years
ago. He had served with the U. S. Navy during World War II. He had visited in
Lenox
many
times and was a son-in-law of Cara Butler & brother in-law of Beatrice
Walter and Doris Williams. He is survived by his wife, a daughter Diane Mengernk, a son Jim and

grandchildren, Mrs. Butler and Doris Williams went to the funeral.

where they attended the funeral of his nephew, Billy Coons, 35, who was killed

who has visited many time in Lenox.

John
L. Craft, resident of the Stringtown area, died
Saturday, Oct. 2nd at Rosary Hospital in Corning. He was 68 years, 7 months and
9 days of age at the time of his death.
He
was the son of George and Margaret Manrose Craft, and
was born in Adams County, Iowa on Feb. 23, 1908.
Mr.
Craft was married to Anna Mildred Agnew in Creston, Iowa on Jan. 8, 1929. Two children,
Dorothy Margaret and Joanne were born to bless this union. He spent his entire
life
farming
in the Stringtown community. He was a devoted husband
and father and delighted in his grandchildren.
He
is survived by his wife Anna Mildred, and by two daughters, Dorothy Margaret Rectenbaugh and her husband, Robert of Norfolk, Virginia
and Joanne Piercy and her husband Ronald of Lenox.
Also surviving are four grandchildren: Cathy Jo Rectenbaugh Corbus, Leisa Rectenbaugh, John Piercy and Joni Piercy; two sisters, Agnes Knollenberg of Columbus,
0., and Sadie Astrada of Seattle, Washington, and a
sister-in-law, Mrs. Harold Craft of Corning.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, Oct. 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Stringtown Church with Rev. Ronald Reed officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mabel Pine, organist; Ruth Smith and Ellen Grace Brown,
vocalists.
Bearers
were Clifford McGregor, Fred Stillinger, Harold
Clark, Elvin Riley, Orvin Bush and Fred Shepherd.

Emig, Lynn Russman -
Lynn Russman Emig, 24, daughter
of Mrs. LaVerne Cordell of Lenox was killed in a
2-car accident near Weatherby, Mo. Friday, Oct. 22nd.
The
daughter of Mrs. LaVeme Cordell and Glenn Russman, Lynn was born at Denison, Iowa Sept. 24, 1952. She
died at the scene of the accident near her home at Weatherby.
She
attended school in Council Bluffs and Lenox and was married to Jerry Lynn Emig on November 19, 1970 at her home in Lenox.
Lynn
and Jerry lived in the Maysville area in
Missouri until Jerry's death in March of this year.
Survivors
include her mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Cordell, four sisters Mrs. James (Kathleen) McCall of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jean Russman, Patricia Cordell
and
Sharon Cordell at home in Lenox; one brother, Bob Gregory of Council Bluffs and
her father, Glenn Russman of Omaha.

services were held Monday, Oct. 25th from the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home With
Rev. Floyd Newbrough and Rev. David Windfrey officiating.

Herbert Hagler, 80, formerly of Missouri, passed away Thursday
morning, Sept. 2nd at the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa, where he had
been residing since Feb.

1974.
Mr. Hagler was born Feb. 1, 1896 in Salem, Mo., the son of
Thomas Jefferson and Lucretia Sims Hagler. He attended school in Salem and grew to manhood
there. He
was
married to Pearl S. Foster on June 3, 1915 in Salem, Mo. The couple farmed for
32 years in Illinois and Iowa, retiring in 1947.
Survivors
are his widow, Pearl; three daughters, Mrs. Leroy (Wilma) Barrett of Menlo, Mrs Reldon (Maxine) Ambrose of
Lenox, and Mrs. Ernst (Mildred) Pinnel of Walnut
Grove, Mo.; two sons, M. Hoyt Hagler of Bridgewater
and Donald L. Hagler of Marionville, Mo.; 19
grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Hagler of Los Angeles,
California;
and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents,
two daughters, Zelma Pauline in 1921 and Betty Mae in 1938; two brothers; and
three sisters.

services were held Saturday, Sept. 4. at 1:30 at the Roland Funeral Home in
Atlantic, Iowa with the Rev. Chuck Smith, pastor of the First Baptist Church,
Atlantic;
officiating.

Hughes, Sarah O Madden (Tinnie) -
Mrs.
Jay Hughes, long-time resident of Lenox, died Saturday, September 11th, 1976 at
the Lenox Care Center. Sarah O. Madden, daughter of Edmund and Alice Madden,
was born in Taylor County, Iowa on March 8th, 1883. Her age at the time of her
death was 88 years, 6 months and 3 days.
Tinnie,
as she was commonly known, was a graduate of the Lenox High School and received
a degree from the Conservatory of Music at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
On
September 12, 1911, she was united in marriage to Jay Edward Hughes, at which
time they established their home in Lenox, where he was employed in the Lenox
Post Office. To this union was born one son, James. The family later became
engaged in farming in both the Lenox and Gravity communities until 1929, when
they moved back to Lenox and Jay became an agent for the Bankers Life Co. of
Des Moines.
Tinnie was associated with her husband in the operation of the Hughes Insurance Agency
until the time of his death in 1968.
Tinnie was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and participated in many church
activities until 1975 when she first became ill. She served on the Library
Board for many years and was a charter member of the LEC Club.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters,. 2 brothers, her husband, Jay;
a daughter-in-law, Genevieve, and a granddaughter Jeanne Bush.
She
leaves to mourn, her departure her son James, and wife, Marian; three
granddaughters, Mary Walter and husband Garland of Lenox; Kathy Azinger and husband, Mike of Fort Madison; Peggy Tripp and
husband David of Kent; three step-grandsons, Pat Carr of Council. Bluffs; Mike
Carr of Dallas, Texas; and Joe Carr of Liberty, Mo.; 9 great grandchildren;
other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were held Monday afternoon, Sept. 13th at the Lenox United Methodist
Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished by Roberta Lockhart, organist.

Mrs.
Joseph Lewis, 85, died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Saturday, Sept. 18th.
Nellie
Mildred Williams was born on July 3, 1891 at Prescott, Iowa and died at the age
of 85 years, 2 months and 18 days.
She
was united in marriage to Joseph Lewis on December 25, 1910. She spent her
entire life in the Prescott and Lenox areas.
She
is survived by her three children: Earl Lewis of Orient; Arthur of West Des
Moines, and a daughter, Bessie Lillie of Lenox. Also surviving are two
daughters-in-law,
a son in law, 9 grandchildren and 6 great
grandchildren. Also three brothers, Elmer and Everett of Corning and Bill of
Galesburg, Ill.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, 1 granddaughter, Judy Lewis and 1 great grandson,
Scott Shehan. Also by four brothers and 3 sisters.
Nellie
loved her family and friends. She enjoyed her grandchildren very much. Her
happiest times were spent visiting with friends and her family.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 from the First Christian Church in
Lenox with Pastor Don Jensen officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mildred Walter, organist; and Mrs. Harold Maynes and Mrs. Larry Schrader, vocalists.

Funeral
services were held October 1st for Hazel E. Scott, 64, who died September at
the Lenox Care Center.
Hazel
Ellen Scott, daughter of Susan Violet and Walter Norton Scott, was born at Wagnor, Oklahoma April 9th, 1911 and departed this life on
Sept. 28, 1976 at the age of 64
years,
4 months and 19 days.
When
a tiny baby they moved back to Taylor County around the Sharpsburg area where
she grew to maturity and attended public school.
She
belonged to the Methodist Church in Sharpsburg and attended faithfully as long
as her health would permit.
She
was preceded in death by her mother, father and twin sister, Helen.
Left
to cherish her memory are 1 sister, Faye Ratliff and husband Leonard and 2
brothers, Donald and wife Nellie, Bill and wife Doris, 8 nieces and 3 nephews
and a host of
other
relatives and friends. She was a kind and considerate sister and will be missed by all who knew
her.
Services
were held at the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with Pastor Karl
Watkins officiating.

Claude
Swartz, 86, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the Lenox Care Center.
Mr. Swartz
was born in Andrews County, Missouri on June 5th, 1890. He was married to Ethel
Hill at Corning, Iowa Jan. 18, 1916. She preceded him in death Aug. 9th, 1970.
Survivors
include a daughter, Mrs. Willard Boyer of Lenox, a son, Lloyd Swartz of Murray,
four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Also
two brothers, Roland of Corning and Floyd of Billings, Montana.
Mr.
Swartz was a farmer in Taylor County prior to his retirement.

will be held tonight (Thursday) from 7:30 to 8:30 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral

Claude
Ray Swartz was born to Francis Phillip Swartz and Nancy Ann Roland Swartz June
5, 1890 in Andrew County, Missouri. He passed away Sept. 14th, 1976 at the age
of 86 years, 3 months and 9 days at the Lenox Care Center.
He
had 6 brothers and one sister. Two brothers survive, Roland Swartz of Corning
and Floyd Swartz of Billings, Montana. Claude had a twin brother, Clarke, who
preceded
him
in death several years ago.
He was
married to Ethel Hill Jan. 18, 1916 at Corning, Iowa. She preceded him in death
Aug. 9th, 1970. He is survived by their two children and their families. They are daughter Claudine and husband
Willard Boyer, who live in Lenox, Iowa and a son Lloyd and wife Thelma who live
in Murray, Iowa. He is also survived by four grandchildren, 10 great
grandchildren, nieces, nephews and, many other relatives and friends.

Church in Corning for Mrs. Ida M. Symonds, who passed away Monday, August

at the Lenox Care Center where she had been a resident the past 2 months.
Mrs.
Symonds was 92 at the time of her death.
The
daughter of Winfield and Mary Johnston Walker, she was born in Cass County,
Iowa Feb. 23, 1884.
Survivors
include two sons, Harold Symonds of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and Walter E.
Symonds of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Esther) Hogan of
Corning
and Mrs. Leland (Dorothy) Hegwood of Lenox, a foster

and 15 great grandchildren.

Symonds,
Ida M Walter -
Ida
Walker Symonds, 92, the daughter of R. W. and Mary Johnston Walker, was born on
Feb. 23, 1884 in Cass County, Iowa, and passed away on Aug. 16, 1976 at the
Lenox
Care Center following a brief illness. She had lived most of her life in Cass
and Adams counties.
Ida's
mother died when she was 6 years old and she grew to womanhood in the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob DeVore of rural Massena.
On
Feb. 21 1906 she was united in marriage with Harry Symonds at the DeVore home.
Three
daughters and three sons were born to bless this union. Ida loved people and
found great pleasure in having them drop in for a visit. No caller ever
left her home
without
being served refreshments of some kind and being thanked again and again for
stopping by. She was also that rarity a true pioneer, in this day and age of
good
roads
and easy travel, for as a child she traveled to Kansas in a covered wagon and
lived for a time in a sod house. The love and the fun she shared and enjoyed
with her children, grandchildren, and neighbors down through the years surely
helped to keep her young.
She
was life long member of the Methodist Church, joining
first at Victoria, later transferring to the Mt. Pleasant church and finally
transferring to the Corning church
when
she moved to town.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, one daughter Hazel
Mane and a son Donald. Surviving to mourn her passing are her two sons, Harold
of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Walter E. of Council Bluffs, Iowa, daughters,
Dorothy (Mrs. Leland Hegwood) of Lenox, and Esther
(Mrs. Donald Hogan) of Corning and a foster daughter, Mrs.
William
(Blanche) Gregory of Kansas City, Mo., sixteen grandchildren and 15 great
grandchildren, a number of other relatives and a great many friends.
Services
were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Corning with Rev. James W. King
officiating.
Organist

Floyd
B. Wall, son of John Adam and Cora Luella Wall was born near Grant City, Mo.
March 18, 1901, and died June 20, 1976. He was 75.
He
came to Iowa with his parents and lived in Southwest Iowa the remainder of his
life, having moved to Shenandoah in 1948 where he was employed by Lake
Nurseries until his
retirement.
He
was united in marriage to Florence E. Stottlemyer at
Creston, Iowa, on Feb. 22, 1921. To this union was born one son, Paul Laverne. He
was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Surviving
are his wife Florence, daughter-in-law Christian Wall, grandson Mark Wall,
granddaughter Marsha (Mrs. Gary Swartz), three great grandchildren, three
sisters,
many
relatives and a host of friends.
He
was preceded in death by son Paul Laverne, grandson Steven, four brothers and
one sister.
Funeral
services were held from the United Methodist Church, Shenandoah, June 23 with
the Rev. Raymond C. Lott, Jr. officiating. Organist was Mrs. E L. McMichael.
Caring
for flowers were Mrs. Arthur Anderson and Mrs. Alvin Puckett. Miss Florence Gee
and Mrs. P. H. Radden were in charge of the memory
register.
Bearers

Winslow, Paul Myron -
Paul
Myron Winslow, 61, died at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston Tuesday,
Oct. 12th, following a long illness.
Mr.
Winslow was born Aug. 6, 1915 to George R. and Mary E. Winslow. During his
childhood he attended rural schools in Grove township. He spent much of his
young life hunting
and
trapping as he loved the outdoor life.
On
January 29, 1937, he was united in marriage to Darlene M. Leedom.
Three children blessed this union, Connie L. Jensen, Mary Naomi Matheny and
David P. Winslow. Paul spent many happy hours teaching his seven grandchildren,
David Mark, Marvin, Terri, Mike, Paul, Tami and Cindy the wonders of nature.
During
his many years of farming and retirement his heart and doors were always open
to everyone, no matter how old or how young.
Paul
left this life Oct. 12, 1976 at the age of 61 years to join those who went
before him. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those
left to cherish his memories and to carry on his loving ways are his three
children, one daughter-in-law, Zelda Winslow; two sons-in-law. Ernie Jensen and
Gail
Matheny,
seven grandchildren, one brother, Edgar Winslow, two sisters, Jennie England,
and Eldred Briear, two brothers-in-law, Joe England
and Lyle Briear, one sister-in-law,
