Barry, Julia McConkey -
Julia McConkey Barry, 82, passed: away in the hospital at
Clarinda Feb. 19. The funeral mass was held in St. Patrick's Church, Lenox,
Feb. 22, with
with
Fr. Nelo Leto officiating.
Burial was in Calvary cemetery near Corning.
The
deceased was the widow of Michael E. Barry. They were married at Corning and
lived for 25 years at Massena where Mr Barry was an
embalmer.
Later
he returned to Cording to work with the Roland Funeral home. After retirement
they lived in Lenox for 12 years.
Mrs Barry leaves a son, John E. of Corning; two daughters, Mrs Royal Rusco and Mrs Eddie
Mack of Des Moines, the sons-in-law; 4 grandchildren, Richard,
Carolyn
and Barbara Mack and Jimmy Joe Rusco at Pearl Harbor,
Hawaii, in the service; 2 brothers, John McConkey of
Upland, Cal., Samuel of Corning,
a
sister, Mrs Claude Roth of Turlock, Cal., many nieces
and nephews.

Mrs Laura Carlson, 71, died at the Lenox Rest Home Friday evening. A memorial
service was held at Benders' Monday, with burial at Imogene, her former home.
Mrs Carlson is survived by two step daughters, Mrs Will
Andrews and Mrs Carl Swanson, of Lenox, a stepson,
Wilbur Carlson of Denver, Colo., 9
grandchildren
and 14 great grandchildren. She had been at the Rest Home since June. Her
husband, Carl, died in 1953.

Bertha Cless -
Mrs Bertha Cless Cheese, 92, died Wednesday afternoon at
the United Presbyterian home at Washington, la. Her funeral was Friday at the
Presbyterian
Church
in Lenox with burial here.
Her
first husband, Albert Cless is buried here. Her
second husband was Ed Cheese, brother of Harry Cheese.
The
deceased formerly lived in Lenox, and later in Los Angeles, Calif. Survivors
include a nephew, Randall Humphrey of Los Angeles.
Mrs Cheese was the last charter member of Salome Chapter of OES and a charter
member of the Lenox Fortnightly club. She was a piano teacher and organist,
actively working with the church .choir.

Edward
A. Copeland, 75, died at Lincoln, Nebr., Wednesday night. Graveside services
were held at the Lenox cemetery Friday afternoon. He was a
brother
of Lew Copeland who passed away recently.
Edward
A. Copeland, son of Edward L. and Lucy Athey Copeland, was born July 5, 1888, west of Lenox and moved here with his parents
in 1900. He attended
school
here.
He
made insurance his life business and in later years was a Field Representative,
mostly in the middle west.
He
became a member of the Lenox Christian Church in 1915.
He
was married to Ann Scott in 1930. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Ann, 3
sisters, Mrs Mamie Hill, Corning, Mrs Herb Tully, Lenox, Mrs Wm. Potts,
Montezuma,
several nieces and nephews.

and friends from out of town who came for the services Friday were Mr and Mrs Wm. Potts of
Montezuma, Mrs Mamie Hill, Mr and Mrs Walter

B. Copeland, 81, died at his home here at 11 a. m. Tuesday. He had been a salesman for the Standard
Chemical Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, for 40
years,
and retired in 1959. The body is at the Bender Funeral Home. Services will be
Thursday at Benders at 2 p. m., the Rev. A. J. Clements officiating.
Burial
will be in the Lenox Cemetery.
Mr Copeland was born in Kansas but had lived in Lenox since he was a small boy. He
leaves his widow, Lillian, a son, Eugene Goodale, two

Copeland, Lewis Edward -
Lewis
Edward Copeland, Registered Pharmacist, the son of Lucy Athey and Edward L. Copeland, was born December 31, 1881, at Douglas, Kansas. He
passed
away Feb. 4 1964, at his home at the age of 82 years.
At
the age of one year he came with his parents to Iowa in a covered wagon to make
their home four miles west of Lenox. At the age of 17 he entered the
Bennett
and Maiden Drugstore, in 1899, located on the corner of the "Hamilton
Electric Building." Later he and his deceased brother, Charles, associated
themselves
with O. D. Tyler better known as "Tyler and Copeland brothers," for a
number of years.
In
1904 he became a Registered Pharmacist. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy awarded him
a 50 year certificate for a half century of practice and as a recipient
of
the 50 year certificate he was honored by the Association as being elected an
Honorary Life member of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association.
He
married Lillian Goodale, December 30, 1908. In 1912
he took up the Salesmanship of Pharmaceuticals with Standard Chemical Company
and traveled
until,
due to ill health, he retired in 1959.
He
leaves to mourn his loss, his devoted wife, Lillian; one son, Eugene, and two
grandchildren, Robert and Jeanie, of Lenox; a sister-in-law, Retta,
who
is in the home; one brother, Edward, of Lincoln, Nebr., who was unable to
attend; 3 sisters, Ms Mamie Hill, of Corning, Mrs Herb Tully, of Lenox, Mrs William
Potts,
of Montezuma, la., and a number of nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones.
In
his younger life he was always happy to promote anything for the betterment of
the town. He helped with ice cream suppers to get the first fire
fighting
equipment, also the first band uniforms. He was a very active member of the
band for years and spent many hours with his music.
Services
were at the Bender Funeral Home Thursday, Feb. 6, conducted by Rev, A. J.
Clements. Burial was in the Lenox.

Denns Durbin, cabinet maker and violin maker, died at Maryville, Mo. He formerly
lived here in the house located where Barrans Oil
Co., stands and had a
photographic
studio where Dr Boulden's office is. He and his wife
observed their 71st wedding anniversary Jan. 31.
He
was a cousin of Mrs Joe Miller. She and Raymond
Miller attended the funeral at Maryville Friday. His wife survives, also some
sons.

Kirkpatrick, Laura LeQuatte Duffield -
Mrs Laura Kirkpatrick, widow of H. C. Kirkpatrick, died at her home here Thursday
morning, Mar. 20. Services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock
at
the Bender Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Albert Clements of the Lenox
Methodist Church. Interment was Tuesday morning at Zion Lutheran cemetery,
Blair, Wisc., the graveside commital service being conducted by the Rev Konrad Urberg.
Laura LeQuatte Duffield was born Feb. 25, 1888 in Rock
Island County Illinois, the daughter of William B. and Sarah LeQuatte Duffield who were early
Illinois
land owners. She was the eldest of four children. She grew to womanhood in
nearby Muscatine, Iowa.
At
Iowa City she was married to Horton C. Kirkpatrick in 1904 and they proceeded
to spend their lives together in the weekly newspaper field, publishing
papers
in Wisconsin and Iowa and especially at Blair, Wisc.,
where Mr Kirkpatrick was editor and publisher of the
Press for 25 years.
They
were parents of four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive with the
exception of a son, Richard.
After
a retirement period of four years spent in southern California, Mrs Kirkpatrick and her husband once more entered the
publishing business and
spent
eight years at the Lenox Time Table, until Mr Kirkpatrick's death in 1952. Mrs Kirkpatrick
continued to reside in Lenox.
Prominent
in Wisconsin club and social circles, Mrs Kirkpatrick
was equally so in Lenox until her health deferred such activities. She was well
read and interested
in
many subjects.
Though
in ill health most of her life, she carried on a full life as wife and mother
and was a vital part of her community. Devoted entirely to her home and family,
she
was a wonderful mother, understanding, gentle and loving. She sacrificed much
to achieve the desires of her family.
Entertaining
a wide circle of friends she kept close contact with old and new throughout her
lifetime. Much beloved, her loss is keenly felt by family
and
by friends. Death came mercifully to this blithe spirit on Thursday morning,
March 26, 1964 to end a long period of suffering.
Surviving
are four daughters and three sons: Zora K. Burke,
Corona del Mar, Calif., Stanley D. Kirkpatrick, Hamilton, Mont., William D.
Kirkpatrick, Eugene,
Oregon,
Nadine K. Tyler, Rock Island, Ill., June K. Hanson, Azusa, Calif., and Robert
and Lois Kirkpatrick of Lenox. Also one brother, Dr L. J. Young of
Paradise,
Calif., 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

McCreight, Merle Proudfit -
Word
has been received by relatives of the sudden death of Mrs Lloyd McCreight, on Feb. 11 at her home at Pasadena,
Calif. Death was due to a heart attack
following
the flu.
Mrs McCreight, the former Merle Proudfit,
of Albia, la., was well known in the Clearfield, Lenox and Creston communities.
The
first years of their marriage was spent in Creston where Mr MeCreight was pastor of the United Presbyterian
Church for a number of years.
She
leaves to mourn her loss her husbnd, J. L. McCreight, two sons, William and family of Pasadena, and
the Rev. John McCreight and family of Walton,
N.
Y. Mrs Bessie McCreight of Clearfield is a sister-in-law.

Mrs Forrest (Audrey) Pershin, 71, died Monday afternoon.

1908 and passed away Mar. 9, 1964 at the age of 71 years and 6 days.
One
son, one brother and three sisters preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn,

Shawler, Clara May Porter -
Clara
May Porter Shawler, daughter of William and Annie Gensimore Porter, was born June 10, 1874 in Warren County,
Illinois and passed away Feb
12,
1964 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, at the age of 89 years, 8
months and 2 days.
At
an early age she came with the family to Iowa and settled in the vicinity of
the Four County Corner north of Clearfield.
On
January 8, 1901 she was united in marriage to Milton W. Shawler.
To this union were born six children: Glenn and Gail of Denver, Colo.; Beryl of
Des
Moines; Bert of Lenox; Reva (Mrs Raymond) Ripperger of Afton and Donald of Kent.
They
farmed around Clearfield with the exception of a short time in Oklahoma until
1940 when they retired and moved into Clearfield. For the past four years
she
had lived at the Boyd Nursing Home in Afton.
She
was preceded in death by her husband on November 8, 1957.
Those
surviving are the five sons and one daughter, 16 grandchildren, 16 great
grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Eva Grimsley of Blackwell, Okla., one brother-in-law, Lowell Shawler of Clearfield, two sisters-in-law, Minnie Woods of
Clearfield, Sallie Shawler of Lenox, other relatives
and many friends.
She
was a member of the Methodist Church and of Greenwood Ladies.
Services
were held at the Clearfield Methodist Church Saturday Feb. 15 with Rev Herbert
Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Mrs Lloyd (Audrey B.) Smith, 68, of 809 E. Arnold St., Marshfield, Wisc., died in a hospital there Jan. 31. Services were held
at the Church of Christ,
Sheldon, Wisc., Feb. 2, the Rev. W. E. Koehler officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery at Sheldon.

bearers were Ernest, Lester and Harold Baughman, Desco Gieselman, John Videmshek and Ray Reynolds Sr.
The
daughter of John and Myra J. Dougherty Abbitt, the
deceased was born near Gravity, Iowa, Nov 18, 1895. Nov 15, 1916 she was married to Lloyd J.
Smith
at Lenox.
Two
children survive: Helena, Mrs Chester Turville, Neillsville, Wisc., and
Eunice, Mrs Arthur Anderson, Marshfield, Wisc. There are also
8 grandchildren
and
10 great grandchildren. Three children died in infancy.
Mrs Smith was a member of the Church of Christ at Sheldon.

Mrs Mary A Standiford, 74, widow of B. Ed Standiford died Feb 24 in a Clarinda hospital. Her funeral was at Tarkio Feb 27. She was
born Aug 16, 1889
near
Lenox, a daughter of Wm. T. and Bell Park. She was married in Denver, Colo in 1925. Mr Standiford died in 1958.
Mrs Standiford attended Tarkio college and was employed
in a Tarkio bank for a number of years. Mr Standiford was a foreman of the Durham Rankin
farms.
The
only survivor in the Park family is a brother, Ross, of Anaheim, Calif. Mrs Standiford was a relative of
Hattie Henderson in the Clearfield Nursing Home.

Stoaks, Lyle Burton -
Lyle
Burton Stoaks, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Stoaks of
Clearfield, was born October 31, 1908 on a farm in the Stringtown Community and passed
away
at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, March 18, 1964 at the age of 55
years, 4 months, and 18 days. Death was due to an injury suffered on
the
previous Sunday.
At
an early age he became a member of the First Christian Church of Lenox, He grew
to manhood in the same community until his marriage in 1930
to
Bernice Haas, also of Lenox. To this union were born three children, a son Gall
of Clarence, la., two daughters, Mrs John Jones of
Lenox and Peggy at
home.
Their
married life was spent on the farm south of Lenox. He was an outstanding farmer
and his livestock was his pride. He had such an intense purpose in
everything
he did. He was very interested in the
activities of his community, especially those things he thought were to its
betterment. He gave much of his
time
to local school programs, and he believed in doing everything possible for
better education. He loved working with young people, especially boys, and
spent
ten years as a 4-H club leader and in other 4-H activities.
He
was a board member of the Stock and Saddle club and gave much of his time to it's promotion.
He
will be greatly missed as a husband and father and also as a citizen, as he was
always ready to help anyone, anywhere, anytime.
He
is survived by his wife and children and two grandchildren, to whom he was so
devoted, his parents, two brothers, Raymond of Ames, la., Cleo of Lenox and
a
son-in-law John Jones. Twin brothers preceded him in death, Max who died in
infancy, and Rex who passed away ten years ago; also a number of nieces
and
nephews, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were Friday at the Lenox
Methodist Church, the Rev A J Clements and Rev D Shaeffer officiating.
Burial
was in the Lenox cemetery.

Stoaks,
Lyle
Lyle Stoaks was still on the critical list at the Creston
hospital Tuesday after injuries in an accident Sunday. He was at the Dwight
Wilcox farm and
went
into the loft of the barn to close a door. The hook came off, and he
lost his balance, falling about 12 feet onto a gate. He has a broken leg and
his
liver
was punctured, resulting in loss of blood.

Charles
A. Veatch passed away at his home in Lenox, Tuesday, Mar. 17 at 2:30 a. m. He
is survived by his wife, Florence and four sons, Olen of
Fontanelle,
Howard of Creston, Walter of Prescott and Gene of Lenox; two daughters, Viola Sandstrom of Sharpsburg and Arda Brown of Tempe, Ariz.;
also
16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Two
sons, Estel and Marion preceded him in death.
Funeral
services will be held at the Keating Funeral home in Creston at 2:00 Thursday.
Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Creston.
The
body is at the Keating Funeral home at Creston. The family will meet their
friends at the home this evening, Wednesday, from 7:30 to 8:30 p. m.

Veatch, Charles Arthur -
Charles
Arthur Veatch, son of William McKinder and Sarah Ann
Anderson Veatch, was born in Nodaway County, Mo., October 9, 1886 and died at
his home
in
Lenox, la., March 17, 1964, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 8 days.
On
August 21, 1907 he was married to Florence Dawes at Maryville, Mo. They were
engaged in farming near Hopkins, Mo., until 1915 when they moved to Iowa.
They
then farmed in the vicinities of Orient, Cromwell, Creston and Kent, until
retiring in 1946 on an acreage in Lenox. He had been ill for several months,
but
was
very patient through all of it.
He
was proceeded in death by his parents, four brothers, John, James and two in
infancy, sisters, Ursula Comer, Anna Comer, Alice Violett,
and Jane
Keith;
two sons, Estle and Marion; one grandson, Rodney Brown;
and one great granddaughter, Rosanne Sandstrom.
Surviving
him is his wife Florence; four sons: Olen of Fontenelle,
Howard of Creston, Gene of Lenox, Walter of Prescott; and two daughters: Viola
Sandstrom of Sharpsburg and Arda Brown, twin sister of Marion,
of Tempe, Ariz. Also 18 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces
and
nephews,
and his mother-in-law Mrs Arda Crawford, also a sister-in-law, Mrs Sarah Estes of
Maryville.
Services
were Mar. 19 at Creston with burial at Graceland Cemetery.

Mrs Ida Young, 68, died at the Rosary hospital early Saturday morning. She had been
ill about 2 months. The funeral was Tuesday at the United
Presbyterian
Church, the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
Ida
Margaret Young, the daughter of Mr and Mrs George Willbee was born on
September 18, 1895 and died on March 14, 1964, at the age of 68 years,
5
months and 26 days.
On
January 27, 1916 she was united in marriage to Charles Young, who died March 2,
1962. They lived in the Lenox Community nearly all their lives
and
moved into Lenox in 1958.
Mrs Young was a member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church.
She
is survived by a daughter, Mrs Roy (Betty) Case of
Prescott, and seven sons, Geo., Bill, Kenneth, Dale, and Richard, all of Lenox,
Harold of Creston,
and
Donald of Gilmore City, la,, and their families; also other relatives and
friends including a sister, Mrs Jeannie Elms, Long
Beach, Calif., and a
brother,
Robert Willbee, Des Moines.
