Barr, Mildred Louise Carey
-
Mildred
Louise Carey, youngest daughter of Micheal J. and
Bertha Ferguson Carey, was born December 26, 1905 at Des Moines, Iowa, and died
on July 4, 1971, at St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was a graduate of
St. Joseph's Academy and worked for a law firm until her marriage June 23, 1928
at Creston, Iowa, to R. Russell Barr.
Thirty
years of their married life have been spent in Kansas City.
Survivors
include her husband, Russell Barr of 1614 Bristol, Kansas City Mo. 64126, one
son, Robert George Barr, one daughter, Gretchen Myers, and four grandchildren,
Donna, Robert IV and Patrick Barr and Joni Myers, all of Kansas City. One
brother, Harry Carey, two sisters, Frances Carey and Mary Vanderwal of Des Moines, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Mohler of
Bedford, Iowa also survive.
Two
brothers, one sister and her parents preceded her in death.
Services
were held from McGilley Memorial Chapel and St.
Stanislaus Churoh. Burial was in Resurrection
Memorial cemetery north of Kansas City.
She
was a loving and lovable wife, mother, sister and friend.

Funeral
services for Roy Buchanan, 62, of Redondo Beach, California, formerly of
Conway, Iowa, were held Wednesday, June 23rd at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in
Bedford. Mr.
Buchanan
died June 19th in Redondo Beach. Interment was in the Conway cemetery.
Survivors
include his wife, Ruth, daughters, JoAnn Denton of
Conway and Barbara Doyle of Redondo Beach, sons, Ed of Truro, Iowa, and David
at home, one brother, T. C. Buchanan
of Westminster, Colo.

Mrs.
Peter (Leona) Cullen, 73, former Lenox resident, died at the Crest Haven
nursing home in Creston at 11:30 a.m. July 14th. She had been ill for nine
weeks.
Mrs.
Cullen had lived in Creston since 1963. Her home was at 513 West Adams street.
Leona
Morrison was born Feb. 19, 1898. She was the daughter of Frank G. and Nora
McKee Morrison. She was married at Reno, Iowa, Nov. 28, 1922, to Peter F.
Cullen. He preceded
her
in death in 1962.
Mrs.
Cullen is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lyle (Mildred) Watts of Falls
Church, Va., Mrs. Charles (Monica) Mohler of Bedford,
and Mrs. Gene (Seraphia) Stoaks of
Lenox,
three brothers, William Morrison of Grant, Hank Morrison of Denver, Colo., and Arlo Morrison of Greenfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice
Cullen of Greenfield and Mrs. Elizabeth Waters of Creston. Also surviving are
six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Funeral
services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Malachy's Catholic church. Rev. Fr. Otho Sullivan, the pastor,
officiated.
Burial was in Calvary cemetery.

James
L. (Pop) Dunlap, 79, at one time one of the leading swine raisers in the state,
was buried in Pomona Monday following his death at Laguna Beach, July 8th. He
was a longtime
resident
of Chino.
Mr.
Dunlap was State "Swine Man of the Year" in 1957. He went to Chino in
1920, and from that time until he moved to the beach six years ago he exhibited
his animals extensively.
He
was president of the California Pork Producers association in 1955-56. The
family ranch was on Yorba north of the present freeway.
Mr.
Dunlap was born in Lenox, Iowa, on Jan. 29, 1892. In Chino he was a one-time
member of the board of education and was active in the promotion of agriculture
for youth.
He
was a member of the Farm Bureau and a life member of the Future Farmers and
member of the Optimists and Elks. For 40 years he exhibited swine at both the
Los Angeles County and state fairs.
Surviving
him are his wife, Elizabeth Dunlap of
Laguna Beach, and two sons, James Reldon Dunlap,
employed at the Chino post office, and Richard Donaven Dunlap, television producer in New York City. He also leaves two grandsons, a
granddaughter and two great grandsons.
Funeral
services were held at Grffith Mortuary with the Rev.
Michael Cooney, officiating.

Gordon
Elder, 70, well known trucker and Lenox resident, was killed when struck by a
car in St. Joseph, Missouri Thursday night, July 22nd.
Authorities
said he had parked his truck at the side of the road and stepped into the path
of an automobile driven by Warren Kiner, 18, of St.
Joseph. The accident occurred shortly after midnight Thursday morning.
Gordon Armour Elder, son of Andrew and Hannah Nord Elder,
was born at Essex, Iowa, August 31, 1900, and passed away July 22, 1971, at St.
Joseph, Missouri. He was one of ten
children.
He was married to Gladys Helene Underwood, December 5, 1923 in Taylor County.
To this union three children were born.
Surviving
are his widow, three children, Gordon Howard at home, Mrs. Virginia Wollenberg of Independence, Missouri, and Mrs. Doris
Moneymaker of Seattle, Washington, one brother, four sisters, three
grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Besides
his parents he was preceeded in death by three
brothers and one sister.
He
was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Essex. He served his country in both
World Wars, and was a member of the
American Legion Post No. 260. He was very popular as an umpire for the Little
League baseball teams. He had been a trucker in Lenox for twenty five years.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, July 24th, 1971 at 2 p.m. at the Bender Funeral
Home in Lenox, with the Rev. John Wagner, pastor of the Salem Church of the
Brethren
officiating.
Music
was furnished by Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck accompanied by Norma Paymal.
Pallbearers
were Glenn Norton, Harlan Grimm, Wesley Crouch, George Austin, Kenneth Black,
and Jay Bridgewater. A military service was held at the graveside.
Interment was in Fairview cemetery in
Lenox.

Edna
Grace Fattig, former resident of Lenox, died Sunday,
July 4, 1971 at Omaha, Nebr., where she had made her home.
Edna
Grace Fattig, daughter of Mary Jane and William Reed
was born Dec. 7, 1888 and died July 4, 1971 at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha,
Nebraska, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 27 days.
She
was united in marriage with Willard J. Fattig October
30, 1907. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Lucille. Neely. The family
made their home in and around Lenox until
the
death of her husband in 1953, after which she lived in Creston for eighteen
years. The past year she has resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Keith V. Neely in Omaha.
Throughout
most of her life she was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and upon
moving to Creston attended the First Baptist Church.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one brother.
Besides
her daughter and son-in-law, she leaves to mourn three grandchildren all of
Omaha, Wayne E. Neely and wife Kay, Deanna Kay Gove and Roger A. Neely, who is
a member
of
the armed forces, three great grandchildren, Laurie Neely, Brian Gove and
Christopher Neely. Also two nephews, Joe Maynes, Jr.,
and wife Lois and family, Harold Maynes,
wife
Gwen and family, one niece, Fay Jean Lesher and
husband, Bob and family of San Diego, California, plus a host of other
relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the United
Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Francis Crown and Rev. Wallace Nelson
officiating.
Music
was furnished by Gwen Maynes and Roberta Lockhart.
Bearers
were Bill Reed, Roger Neely, Wayne Neely, Joe Maynes,
Jr., Stanley Tepley and Harold Maynes.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Lyle
Earl Nelson, son of Olive and Orville Nelson, was born May 9, 1902, on a farm
between Clearfield and Conway, and departed this life at his home near
Clearfield, Iowa, on Aug.
10,
1971, at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 1 day.
He
lived in the Clearfield community his entire life, on a farm, and graduated
from the Clearfield High School in 1919.
He
was united in marriage to Bessie House of Clearfield, Iowa on June 24th, 1925.
To this union were born four children: daughters Thelma Brown and Darlene
Taylor, and sons, Dean and Paul all of Clearfield.
He
was a member of the Clearfield Christian Church and active in church and
community activities as long as health permitted.
He
was preceded in death by his wife on August 5, 1969, also his parents.
Left
to cherish his memory are his four children, Dean. Thelma, Darlene and Paul,
two daughters-in-law, Mildred and Caroline Nelson, and two sons-in-law, Dale
Brown and Raymond
Taylor.
Also his fourteen grandchildren, Larry, Martin, and Yvonne Taylor, Allen, Betty
Lou, Kathy and Clint Brown. Judy, Jeanie and Kenny Nelson, all of Clearfield,
Jim Nelson
and
his wife Carolyn of Lenox. Harold Nelson and his wife, Rebecca of Atlantic,
Harriet Bergantzel and her husband, Roger, serving
with the U. S. Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, Ronnie
Brown
and his wife Nancy serving with the U.S. Air Force in Italy. Two great
grandchildren Dana and Brian Nelson, two brothers, Ivan and Horace Nelson, also
three sisters-in-law,
Madge
and Helen Nelson, Bernice Bennett and her husband, Donald, all living near
Clearfield, several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends also
survive.
Final
rites were conducted Thursday, August 12, 1971, at 2 p.m. at the Clearfield
Christian Church with Rev. Chou Taik Yoon
officiating. Varner Funeral Home was in charge of
the
service and burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.
Casket
bearers serving were Allen Brown, Harold Nelson, Larry and Martin Taylor,
Kenneth Nelson and Ivan Bennett.

Eathon Leon Oxley, son of Frank and Amanda Eggers Oxley, was born March 25, 1897 in Taylor
County near Guss, Iowa and departed this life at the
Rosary hospital in Corning,
Iowa,
July 19, 1971, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 24 days.
He
grew to adulthood in the community where he was born, the Barton School
District in Dallas Township, Taylor County, Iowa.
On
December 26, 1917, he was united in marriage to Mabel Hixson at the Methodist
parsonage in Bedford, Iowa, and they moved to the farm west of Sharpsburg,
Iowa, which was to be their home until later years they moved to Sharpsburg,
la., where they have continued to reside.
Born
to bless this home were two children.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Glenn and a grandson,
Kenneth.
Left
to cherish memories are his wife, Mabel, son Paul and his wife Jenola and daughter, Freda and her husband, Harold Bailey,
three grandchildren, Howard Bailey, Linda Anderson
and Diana Wymore, and seven great
grandchildren.
He
united with the Methodist Church in Guss when a young
man.
He
was a kind and considerate husband, father, friend and neighbor and will toe
sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Severn, 79, of Sacramento, California, died July 21, 1971 in that city. Mr.
Severn is a former Lenox resident, operating a garage and repair shop here a
number
of
years ago. He was born in Lenox.

include his wife, Laura, daughters Beatrice Severn and Mrs. Shirley Barker of
Sacramento, Mrs Dorothy Blaess of San
Bruno, Mrs. Thelma Gillette of Davenport, Mrs.
Bonnie
Sennett of Chico, Mrs. Wilma Jackson of Pine Bluff, Ark., Mrs. Helen Murphy of
Concord, and sons Haldean Severn of San Luis Obispo,
Francis Leo Severn of Martinez, and
Willard
D. Severn of Arieta, Cal. He is also survived by a
sister, Mrs. Mayme Karney of Concord. Thirty two grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren mourn his
passing.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. July 24th.

Mrs Stella Stoner of Creston, 77, died at the Creston hospital Tuesday night
following a long illness.
Funeral
services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 at the United Presbyterian Church
in Creston with burial in the Lenox cemetery.
She
was a sister of George and Tom Ferguson of Lenox and Hamilton Ferguson of
Bedford. Sisters are Flora Arnold of Des Moines and Mable Armstrong of Park
Rapids, Minnesota.

Stoner, Stella A Ferguson -
Stella
A. Stoner, daughter of George and Janet Ferguson was born near Clearfield,
Iowa, on May 3, 1894. She passed away at Greater Community hospital following
an extended illness at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Following
several years as a rural school teacher in Taylor County, she was united in
marriage to Percy C. Stoner March 9, 1916 at Lenox, Iowa. He preceded her in
death March 10,
1969.
She
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Creston, the Elizabeth Class,
the V.P.W. Circle, and the South Valley Quilters.
She
leaves to mourn, a son Willis and his wife Mary, three grandchildren, Larry and
wife Marilyn of Phoenix, Arizona, Jack and wife Paula of Old Greenwich,
Connecticut, and
Marilyn
of Kansas City, Mo., 4 great grandchildren, Alan and Tom of Phoenix and Angela
and Chad of Old Greenwich, two sisters, Mrs. Flora Arnold of Des Moines and
Mrs. Mabel Armstrong of Park Rapids, Minnesota, three brothers, Hamilton of
Bedford, George of Lenox and Tom of Clearfield, and a host of other relatives
and friends.
She
was faithful to her church and enjoyed working in whatever capacity she could
until sickness prevented. She was a gentle and loving mother and a kind
neighbor.
Services
were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Creston, the Rev. Dale
Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Harold Symonds who
also sang Ivory
Palaces
and Beyond the Sunset. Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.
A
memorial for the Cancer Society was established.

Mrs.
Dorothy Terry of Beaumont, California, died August 6th following a lingering
illness of cancer. She was the wife of Edwin Terry, former Lenox resident, who
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam E. Terry, moved to Beaumont in 1933.
In
addition to her husband, Mrs. Terry is survived by three children, Robert E.
Terry of Rialto, Calif., Mrs. Phillip Riser of Banning, Calif., and Judy Terry
of Beaumont.
The
family was further saddened by the unexpected death in Rialto August l0th of Mrs.
Robert E. Terry who was twenty four years of age. She is survived by her
husband and two
small
children. She was the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Terry. Sam E. Terry
is a brother of Will Terry of Lenox.

Ora Van Heeswyik, 60, of Lacona,
Iowa, died about 5:15 pm Wednesday, August 18th in a hospital in Cape May
Point, N. J. He and his wife were driving on a vacation trip. They
had
been gone from home about 3 weeks. Mr. Van Heeswyk was stricken Monday and taken to the hospital where he did not regain
consciousness. A cousin of his wife who lived in the area, was with her at the
time of his death.
He
was born on a farm near Lenox and lived here during his early life, graduating
from high school at Creston. He has relatives in the Creston and Afton areas.
He
leaves his wife, Mary, a son, John, of Royal Oak, Mich.; and two
granddaughters. Two sisters are in Lenox, Mrs. Don Bubb and Mrs. Geo. Grey.
The
funeral was held at the Catholic Church in Lacona at
11 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, with graveside services at 2:30 p. m. at Calvary
cemetery in Creston.

John
Walter, 85, longtime resident of the Lenox area, died Saturday, August 21st at
the Lenox Nursing Home. He had been a resident of the home for only a week,
having moved
there
August l4th.
John
Franklin Walter, son of Jacob Walter and Elizabeth Thatch Walter, was born in
Elkton, Missouri, on June 11, 1886, and departed from this life in Lenox, Iowa,
August 21,
19711,
at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 10 days.
On
Sept. 15, 1921, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Hunter Lee. No children
were born to this union. His wife, Myrtle, preceded him in death in 1966. His
parents, three
brothers
and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Mr.
Walter lived most of his life in and around Lenox. He bad many friends and
thoroughly enjoyed his small farm and working with his livestock. He lived a
good life, read his
Bible
and was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church.
On
November 2, 1968, he married Mrs. Fannie Beck whom he leaves to mourn his
passing. He also leaves several nephews and nieces, two step-sons and one step
daughter, who are going to miss him very much. Mr. Walter also leaves many
friends in the Lenox area.
Funeral
services were held at the United Methodist Church in Lenox at 2 p.m. Monday,
Aug. 23rd with the pastor, Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished by Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Dale Purdum, Raymond Cain, Bill Barrans, Russ Wurster, Lonnie
Barker and Lavaughn Howard.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
Lenox

Lewis Wurster of Zephyrhills, Florida, died June 28th at a
Lakelands, Florida hospital. He was 74 years of age.
Funeral
services will be held at the former home, Springville, Iowa, on Thursday at
1:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church.
He is
survived by his wife, the former Julia Stremmel of Lenox, three sons, Daryl, Harry and Earl, their wives and eleven
grandchildren of Springville.
As a
young man, Mr. Wurster lived in the Lenox community.
