Barker, Mary E Mason -
Mary
E. Mason Barker of Corning, Iowa, died April 18, 1973 at the Cherrelynn Manor Nursing Home in Littleton, Colorado. She
was preceded in death by her husband, William
B.
Barker on February 26, 1973. Since then she had made her home with Lois and
Kenneth Bickford in Littleton, Colo.
On
March 30, she entered the Swedish hospital where she was a patient for 13 days and then entered Cherrelyhn Manor from where, six days later, she departed
this life.
Mary
E. Barker was born Aug. 7, 1885 to Mary Ida and James Mason on a farm north of
Nodaway, Iowa. She was one of eleven children.
On
December 20, 1905 she was married to William B. Barker. To this union were born
six children, James M., Kenneth F. Donal W., Evelyn Leet, Helen Maxine and Lois J. Mrs. Barker was preceded in
death by Helen in 1940 and Evelyn Leet in 1968.
Mr.
and Mrs. Barker have lived in Corning since 1921. They were members of the
First Baptist Church in Corning where they were active in many areas of service
through the
years.
They were honored by a 67th wedding anniversary dinner at the Kenneth Barker
residence in Lenox on Dec. 17, 1972. Relatives and Rev. & Mrs. Williams
were present to commemorate the occasion. The Barkers were tenants at the
Corning Rest Home for 1½ years prior to Mr. Barkers recent decease.
Mrs.
Barker was a loving mother who was always concerned about her family. She is
survived by three sons: James M. of Tacna, Arizona, Kenneth F of Lenox, Iowa, Donal W, of
Ottumwa,
Iowa, and one daughter, Lois Bickford of Littleton, Colorado, two sisters,
Maple Lacop of Nodaway, Ia,,
and Hope Gile of Corning, Iowa, 18 grandchildren, 32
great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning Saturday, April 21st
at 2 pm with Rev. Paul Williams officiating.
Music
was furnished by Billie Jean Barker, Marilyn Beck and Laurie Evans.
Bearers
were Jimmy L. Barker, Donald Barker, David Barker, Lonnie Barker, Danny
Bickford and William Leet.
Burial
was in the Quincy cemetery.

Arthur
Calvin, 80, long time resident of Lenox, passed away at the Nebraska Methodist
Hospital in Omaha, Nebr., Monday, after a short illness.
Mr.
Calvin, son of Nettie Scott and John William Calvin, was born October 18, 1892
at Springfield, Mo., and at the time of his death was 80 years, 5 months and 18
days of age.
On
October 23, 1910, he was united in marriage to Laura Lowe at Chadwick, Mo., and
they lived to celebrate more than 62 years together. To this union 9 children
were born,

Case of Lenox, Opal Heikkenen of Corning, Juanita
House, Hudson, Willard, Paul and James of Lenox and Jack of Vinton, Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son who died in infancy, 2 brothers,
Walter and John and 1 son-in-law, Earl Case,
Survivors
include his wife, Laura, and 8 children, 12 grandchildren, 15 great
grandchildren, two sons-in-law, 4 daughters-in-law, 1 half brother, Clifford
Calvin of Turlock, Calif.,
1
half sister, Pauline Decker of Lyle, Wash., 1 sister-in-law, Barbara Calvin of
Creston, other relatives and a host of friends.
Mr.
and Mrs. Calvin moved to Lenox in 1926 where he was employed by Andy Walter. He
was engaged in farming until 1935 when he entered the trucking business where
he remained until retirement.
Funeral
services will be conducted at the United Methodist Church in Lenox today
(Thursday) at 2 pm, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough.

will be furnished by Forrest Whipp and Guy Henderson
with Norma Paymal at the organ.
Bearers
are Willard Campbell, Luell Bicker, Orville Williams,

Rev.
Kenneth Carey, D. D., 57, a former Lenox resident, died at Niles, Michigan, Tuesday,
March 6th following a lingering illness of some eighteen months.
Mr.
Carey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Carey and was born October 10, 1915 in
Lenox. He attended schools here and was a. graduate of the Lenox high school in
1932. He later
graduated
from Tarkio College in Missouri. Following graduation he worked for a time for
Missouri Service prior to and again returned to the electrical company after
serving nearly
five
years in the army during World War II. Later he entered Pittsburgh Zenia Theological Seminary and after graduation from there
served as pastor of United Presbyterian Churches in Davenport, Iowa and
Cedarville, Ohio. The past sixteen years he had spent as pastor of the U. P.
Church in Niles.
Mr.
Carey married Dorothy Dale in St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 23, 1948 and to this union was born one son, Kenneth
Mark.
Survivors
include his widow, son, Mark, his parents, a brother, Harold of Lenox and two
sisters, Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) Smoldt of Palmdale,
Calif., and Mrs. Willard (Wilma) Scott of North Bend, Nebraska.
Mr.
Carey was very active in community work in the churches he served and had a
host friends made throughout his years in the ministry.
Memorial
services were held in Niles, Michigan Sunday evening.
Graveside
rites were held in Lenox Friday afternoon with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

William
L. DeyErmand, 78, whose residence was 280 Fourth St,
South, Naples, Florida, died there May 18, 1973, after a lengthy illness.
He
was born in Lenox and after graduating from Lenox high school, was employed in
Philadelphia, Pa. He was a WW I veteran, serving with the U.S. Army with the
rank of Infantry
Drill
Sergeant.
After
WW I, he returned to Lenox where he was active in the management of his own
retail clothing business, as well as community affairs. He was Post Commander,
District Commander and State Vice Commander of The American Legion, a life
member of the Legion, a charter member of the Lenox Rotary club and a 50-year
Mason.
At
about the beginning of World War 2, he went to Washington, D, C., where he
became Administrative Assistant to Congressman Ben Jensen of Iowa, which post
he held for
17
years. While in Washington he was a member of the G.O.P. Bull Elephants'. Club,
Civil War Bound Table Club, Congressional Secretaries' club and Capitol Hill
Club.
His
health failed in 1959 and he retired to Vanderbilt Beach, Naples, Florida. In
Naples he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a Past President of
Naples Exchange Club, which, recently honored him with Life membership.
He
is survived by his widow, Jesse E. DeyErmand, two
brothers, Donald and Leo of Nebraska, two sisters, Mrs. Vinnie Simpson of
Pasadena, Calf., Mrs. Ruth Smith of Portland,
Oregon
and one step-sister, Mrs. Catherire Trotter of
Philadelphia.
Funeral
services for Mr. DeyErmand were held from Earl G.
Hodges Funeral Chapel in Naples on Monday, May 21st. Cremation will follow the
services and the cremains will be sent to Lenox for
committal in Lenox Fairview Cemetery at a later date. Bender Funeral Home will
have charge of the Lenox services.

Helen
W. Folcey, 91, died Saturday, May 12th at the Lenox
Care Center where she had been a resident seven years.
Mrs. Folcey was a resident of Lenox for 25 years, living
here with her brother, Jack Stringham until his death
six years ago. She had previously resided in Stuart and Dexter.
Survivors
include a son Francis Folcey and daughter-in-law
Martha of Lenox, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jeanette Folcsy of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, 3 grandchildren and 9 great
grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her son, Jim, in 1959.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday at the Bender Funeral Home at 2 pm, with Rev.
Christine Hershberger, pastor of the Christian Church officiating.
Bearers
were Leland Hegwood, Don Tyler, Ralph Fulk, Glenn Lecklifter, Orville
Walter and Ray Cheese.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Leo
Hale, 74, well known resident of Lenox, died at his home here Wednesday of an
apparent heart attack.
Leo
Vaughn Hale, son of Cora Barnes Hale and William Hale, was born October 7,
1899, on a farm east of Lenox, and died on March 21, 1973 at the age of 74
years, 5 months
and
15 days.
On
September 1, 1919, he was married to Lila Boltinghouse,
who survives him.
A
graduate of Lenox High school, he played basketball and later served as a
referee for many teams in the area as a young man.
Mr.
Hale worked for the telephone company for forty-five years. He began as a
lineman and advanced to vice-president of the local company before it was
purchased by the Iowa-
Nebraska
Light and Power Company. When the company became part of Western Light and
Telephone Company, he continued as district manager, in 1950 he became Division
Manager of the state of Iowa, working out of the Dennison office. As part of
his responsibilities, he placed the first Kellogg dial unit in Iowa at Treynor 34 years ago. For many years he served as a
director of the Independent Telephone Association.
When
he retired in 1963, he returned to his home in Lenox.
Mr.
Hale was an active member of the First Christian Church, serving as a deacon, a
trustee, a member of the pulpit committee, and helping at the church whenever
he could. He
was
also a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges.
As a
hobby and for the enjoyment of the youth in the area, he and his wife operated
a skating rink, the Villa Rio, for 39 years, During his retirement he spent
much of his
time
with the young people at the rink and on his farms.
His
wife, a brother, Glenn Hale, 1 niece,
Gertrude Bruington and Loleta Anderson, sister-in-law, and a nephew, Weldon Hale, other relatives and friends
mourn his passing.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rolla Hale of Malvern, Iowa and
Wayne Hale of Lenox, Iowa.
His
helping hands will be missed throughout the community and particularly by his
family and young fronds.

services were held at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Saturday afternoon, Mar.
24th., at 2 p.m. with Rev. Christine Hershberger, pastor of the Christian
Church officiating.
Music
was furnished by Marilyn Beck, Billie Jean Barker and Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Tip Lucas, Carl Ryan, Lyle Nelson, Doris McKay, George Wurster and Karl Wurster.

Wayne Hethcote, 95, father of Mrs. William Westlake of
Lenox died suddenly March 4th at the Greater Community hospital in Creston.
Wayne
Sylvester Hethcote was born September 27, 1887 in
Logan County, Illinois and was the son of Everette Dudley Hethcote and Dora Bishop Hethcote.
At the time of his
death
he was 85 years, 5 months and 7 days of age.
Mr. Hethcote was preceded in death by his wife, Kate, on Oct.
20, 1970, one son, Donal in March of 1971, a daughter Ada May Cooper on September 1st, 1940, and a sister, Ada Bell
Crossett
in 1966.
He
is survived by six children, Harold and wife Mildred, Willard and wife Mary,
Jack, all of Denver, Colorado, Alice Westlake and husband William of Lenox,
Iowa, Bill and wife Lissell of Colorado Springs,
Colo., Francis and wife Anneva of Fort Dodge, Iowa,
as well as 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hethcote is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Cecil Simons
of Boulder, Colorado and Mrs. Hazel Goble of Columbus Junction, Iowa, and by a step
brother, Cecil Hethcote of
Moline,
Illinois, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Wayne
was a friend to all who knew him, ready to help them at any time or in any way.
He will be greatly missed by his many relatives and friends.
The
family met their friends at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning from 7 to 9 on
Mar 6th.

services were conducted by Rev. Don Briley of
Prescott at 2 p.m. March 7th at the Prescott United Church.
Pallbearers
were F. A. Williams, Harve Brandt, Merritt Dellon, Rex Badgett, Lyle Pattinger and Carl Heatherington.

Mrs.
George Jones, a long-time resident of Lenox, passed away at the Greater
Community hospital in Creston, Iowa, Tuesday, April 17, 1973 after a lingering
illness. She was 65 years, two months and 13 days of age at the time of her
death.
Mrs.
Jones was the daughter of William Kelly and Victoria Evaline Robertson and was born in Harrison County, Missouri Feb. 4, 1908.
At
an early age she accepted Christ as her Savior at the Lotte Grove Baptist Church, then united with the Methodist Church in Lenox in 1955.
On
Sept. 17, 1930, at Grant City, Mo., she was united in marriage to George R.
Jones. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Iona Catherine Beck, of Fort
Collins, Colo., and
Preston
Leroy Jones of Denver, Colorado.
She
was preceded in death by her mother and father, two sisters, two brothers and a
half sister.
She is
survived by her husband George, daughter, Iona, and children Mark and Cindy,
and their father Melvin Beck, son Preston and his wife Lynda and their
children, Kerri, Shelly,
Neal
and Retha and four brothers and two sisters.
The
first two years of their married life were spent on a farm near Benton, Iowa.
From there they moved to a farm 7½ miles southeast of Lenox where they remained
until Dec. 1, 1972, when they moved to Lenox to their present home.
She
loved and cherished her family most of all and was a friend to all who knew her
and was always ready to help any one who was in need.
Caring for all young livestock and watching all growing things were what she
enjoyed most in life. During the cold winter months she spent many hours sewing
and piecing quilts.
She
was a devoted wife and mother and bore her long suffering with quiet dignity,
never questioning her lot.
Funeral
services were held at the United Methodist Church Friday, April 20th at 2 pm,
with Rey, Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music was furnished by Jane Whitmore
and Robert Lockhart.
Bearers were Fred Wilson, John Wilson,
Hal Dean Wilson, and William K Robertson.
Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery.

for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs Kirk Maharry were held Saturday at 1:30 at Manson, Iowa, with
burial at Manson.
The
new son, Jeremy Wade, was stillborn Friday, April 6th.

infant was the grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Brown of Lenox and Mr. and Mrs.
Gerald Maharry of Clearfield, and great grandchild of
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Maharry, Chas.
Brokaw,
Bess Brown all of Lenox and Mr. and Mrs, Orville Wall
of Clearfield.
Mrs.
Kirk Maharry remains hospitalized at Bethesda
Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
The Maharry's other two sons, Rodney and Andy are spending a
couple of weeks with their grandparents.
Mr.
and Mrs. Gerald Maharry, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Brown and
Jolene Brown attended service at Manson Saturday.

Anna Eckels O'Riley, 94, of
Waseca, Minnesota, formerly of Lenox, Iowa, died Sunday, Mar. 25th at Waseca,
Minnesota.
Anna Eckels, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Eckels, was born on March 17, 1879 in Adams County near
Lenox.
She
was united in marriage on December 24, 1902 to William O'Riley,
who died March 22, 1946.
She
is survived by her daughter, Irene Boot, her son Melvin O'Riley,
and a daughter-in-law, Marie O'Riley, all of Waseca,
Minn. Sixteen grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held at the Congregational Church of Waseca, Minn., at 11:00 a.m.
Tuesday, March 27th, 1973.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Marie Paulson, two sisters,
Lillie Scott and Dora Chute and four brothers, Arthur, Edmond, Warren and Clyde Eckels.
Pallbearers
were six grandsons, Darwin O'Riley, Wayne Paulson,
Dale Paulson, Lester Boot, Lowell Boot and Lyndel Boot. Interment was in New Richland
cemetery, New Richland,
Minnesota.

services for Clifford E. Pullen, 64, of Lenox, Iowa, were held Friday, March
23rd at Bender Funeral Home in Lenox conducted by Rev. Floyd Newbrough.
Mr.
Pullen died March 21st at his home in Lenox. Interment was at the North
Fairview cemetery in Lenox.
Clifford
Ellsworth Pullen was born February 3, 1909, near Bedford, Iowa, to Charley and
Ida Pullen.
He
lived his entire life in Taylor
County where he engaged in farming until ill health forced him to retire in
Lenox.
On
March 4, 1939, he married Viola New and to this union 4 children were born,
Rita, Carolyn, Diane and David.
He
joined the Methodist Church in Lenox in 1955.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Verna and Marie.
Survivors
include his wife, Viola, three daughters, Rita and her husband J. D. Shepherd
of Lenox, Carolyn and her husband, Ted Day of Kansas City, Mo., Diane and her
husband,
Larry
Spring of Birmingham, Michigan and 1 son, David. at home. Survivors also
include his grandchildren, Sherri and Connie Shepherd, Tony and Pam Spring and
Tina and
Brian
Day. Also mourning his passing are three brothers, Virgil of Macedonia, Iowa,
Bill of Henderson, Iowa, Delmar of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and four sisters,
Mildred
Slump
of Omaha, Nebr., Eva Young of Council Bluffs, Lela Sherman of Goldfield, Iowa
and Lois Constant of Sheridan, Mo., and a host of nieces and nephews,
Mr Pullen was a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all
his friends and loved ones.

Richey, Timothy Philip -
Timothy
Philip Richey, son of Craig and Pamela Richey, passed away Thursday, March 29th
at the Beatrice State Home at 7:25 p.m. He died of bronchial pneumonia at the
age of 17
months
and 14 days.
Timmy
was born on October 5, 1971, in Burlington, North Carolina. He then moved to
Lenox with his parents at age two weeks. At 9 months he moved with his parents
to Omaha,
Nebraska.
The last three months of his life were spent in the Beatrice State Home as the
result of an accident on November 11, 1972.
Besides
his mother and father, Timmy is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond C. Brown and Mrs. Norma
Lee Black all of Lenox, also William E. Richey of Clearwater,
Florida.
He is also survived by seven great grandparents, two great great grandmothers, and hosts of other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held March 31 at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Pallbearers
were Raymond E. Brown, James Morris, James Rainforth and Michael Richey.
Burial
was at the Clearfield cemetery.
In
his short life, Timmy brought much happiness to all who knew him. He will be
deeply missed by all.

H. (Alpha) Rogers, 84, a resident
of the Lenox and Shannon City communities most of his life until he moved to
Arkansas a few years ago, died Saturday at Imboden,
Ark.
His
death followed a short illness. He had been a farmer until retirement.
Born
in Lenox in August, 1889 he was the son of C. W. and Elizabeth Scott Rogers.
He
was married to Eula Drain and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
before her death.
After
moving to Arkansas he was married to Gertie Hoagland
of Arkansas and she survives.
In
addition to his widow, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sewell McGregor of
Creston and Mrs. Max Hockett of Lenox, two brothers,
Robert of Leon and Orville of Lenox, four
nieces,
three nephews and a step-child.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, Effie Gibson and Vera
Weatherman and two brothers, Ray and Ernest.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday at the Methodist church in Imboden with burial also in Imboden.
Mr.
Rogers was a member of Tremont Lodge, No. 343, A. F. & A. M. in Lenox and
had the distinction of being a 50-year Mason.

Vern Scott, son of Andrew Zane Scott and Nellie R. Bowen Scott, was born Oct.
19, 1898 near Massena, Iowa, and died Friday, April 27th, 1973 at the age of 74

Survivors
include his wife, Edna, nine children, Gerald and his wife Lois, Illah Brown and husband, Claire A., Doloris Hollander and husband Glendall, Ruth Swartz and
husband
Byron,
Norma O'Riley and husband John, Marvin Dee and wife
Betty, Gle and wife Lois, Edward and wife Sharon,
thirteen granddaughters and thirteen grandsons, and five
great
grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Olive Fiddler, Mrs.
Vivian Shepherd, Mrs. Mabel Geary, Mrs. Martha Brooks, Mrs. Viola Finley and
four brothers, George, Earl, Warren and Harry, as well as a host of nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by one
brother, Orval, and his parents.
Mr.
Scott farmed all his life. He passed away at his home south of Corning where he
had resided for 39 years. He and his wife, Edna, celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary in
January,
1970.
He
was a friend to all who knew him, ready to help them at any time or in any way.
He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He
belonged to the Mercer Center Methodist Church, serving on the church board. He
served on the cooperative creamery board and school board many years.
Funeral
services were held at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning Sunday, April 29th at
2:00 pm, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Methodist
Church at Mercer Center
officiating.

was furnished by Norma Paymal, organist and Billie
Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck, vocalists.

Randall
Stephen Williams, son of Glen Thomas and Margaret Carruthers Williams, was born on December 17, 1952, at Rosary hospital in Corning, la.,
and passed away Saturday
morning,
April 28, 1973 at the age of 20 years, 4 months and 11 days after a long
illness.
He
attended Grove No. 4 school for one year and Lenox Community School, graduating
in May, 1971. He was employed at Johnny Baxter Chrysler-Plymouth, Inc., in
Omaha, Nebraska, after graduation until his health forced him to quit work.
He
is survived by his fiance, Jane Leonard of Corning,
Iowa, his parents, one sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Dave Holben of Des Moines, Iowa, a grandfather, Frank Carruthers, a grandmother, Tura Wurster,
both of Lenox and many relatives and a host of friends.
He
win be remembered for his good humor, patient suffering, and his great love of
living.
A
Bible service and rosary was led by Father Reginald Maslinski at the Bender Funeral Home on Sunday night, April 29th.
Funeral
services were held in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox on Monday, April
30th at 10:00 am. A guitar Mass was concelebrated with Rev, LaVerne Wingert of Avoca, Iowa,
officiating.

was furnished by the Lenox C. Y. O. choir with Mrs. James Rychnovsky,
choir director, and music accompaniment from Avoca, Iowa.
Pallbearers
were Richard O'Grady, Lloyd Davison, Allen Ambrose, John Cade, Raymond Brown
and Dave Hewitt.
Burial was in North St. Patrick's
cemetery.
