Arneal, James Duncan -
James
Duncan Arneal, the son of Thomas Alexander and Mary
Agnes Duff Arneal, was born October 30. 1889 at
Liberty,
Nebraska. He died at the Lenox Care Center January 13 at the age of ninety-one
years, two months and
thirteen
days.
As a
child, he moved with his family to the Tingley and
then to the Redding communities in Iowa where he grew to
manhood.
He farmed near Redding for many years as did his brother Bruce.
Mr. Arneal was united in marriage with Bessie Hoover June 26,
1912 at the farm home of her parents near Blockton.
Following
Bessie's death on June 13, 1949, he moved to Lenox and made his home with
James, Maxine and Steve in his
newly
completed home.
He
was united in marriage with Anna Mae Casey at Lenox on June 7. 1952.
Mr. Arneal was an active member of the Lenox United
Presbyterian Church and a strong Republican. He will also
be
remembered for his strong sense of right and wrong and his dedication to fair
play.
Preceding
him in death were his wife Bessie in 1949; his wife Anna on August 11, 1979;
his parents; an infant daughter, a
two
and one half year old son, Howard Thomas; two sisters, Jessie McDill and Mae Arneal; and four
brothers. Clark, Bruce,
Arthur,
and Reverend John Arneal.
Survivors
include a son, James Arneal and wife Maxine of North
Bend. Nebraska: a daughter. Mary Henderson and
husband
Guy of Lenox; six grandchildren. Steve Arneal of
North Bend, Nebraska, Mrs. Tim (Janet) Johns, of Spokane,
Washington,
Tom Henderson of Manning. Iowa, Mrs. Richard (Judy) Teig of Des Moines. Bill Henderson of Clearfield, and
Kay
Henderson of Lenox; four great grandsons and three great granddaughters who
were his delight. especially Nathan
James Arneal and Ty Thomas Henderson; and two
stepdaughters, Genevieve Van Howling and husband Al and Marjorie Bray
and
husband Gene, all of Des Moines.
Services
were held Thursday, January 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church
in Lenox with Reverend Don
Fisher
and Reverend W. H. Sinning officiating. Roberta Lockhart was the organist with
Gwen Mavnes. soloist. The selection
was
the "Twenty-Third Pslam".
Casket
bearers were Harold Carey, Ralph Zabel, Kenneth McFee, Harold Beck, James Shawler,
and Don Johnston.
Interment
was in the Redding Cemetery at Redding. Iowa.

George
Merritt Austin, son of Stanley and Pheobe Austin, was
born April 19, 1918 on a farm in Ringgold County near Delphos.
He
died of a massive coronary heart attack at his home in Mt. Ayr on January 24 at the age of sixty-two years, nine months
and
five days.
George
graduated from Lenox High School in 1937. He served with the Army Air Force for
four years and was stationed in
Europe
for twenty-six months where he worked on B-17 bombers.
Following
his discharge from the service, George was employed as a mechanic by Dixon
Motor Company of Lenox and
remained
with them for thirty-three and a half years until his retirement in the spring
of 1980.
He
was united in marriage September 17, 1952 with Lois Pearl Powell who preceded
him in death.
On
October 7, 1977 he was united in marriage with Berneeta Anna Pedersen at Mt. Ayr.
Preceding
him in death were his wife, Lois, and his parents.
Survivors
include wife, Berneeta, two step-sons, Dennis
Caldwell and Jim Pedersen, both of Des Moines; two
step-daughters,
Mrs. Sharon Haley and husband Reverend Bill Haley of Derry. Pennsylvania and
Mrs. Mary Lou
Letsinger and husband Reverend Robert Letsinger of Pittsburgh.
Pennsylvania; five step-grandchildren, Anne and
Kric Letsinger, Brian and Jeffrey Caldwell and Jennifer
Pedersen; a brother and sister-in-law. Claude and Eloise
Austin
of Atlantic, Iowa: two brothers-in-law and wives, Randall and Vida Wilson of
Clearfield and Wendell and Dee
Wilson
of Lakewood, Colorado; a number of cousins, and other relatives.
Services
were held Tuesday January 27 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox at 2 p.m.
with Reverend W. C.
Trembly of the church and Reverend Lynn Potter of the Mt. Ayr Methodist Church officiating.
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Mike Evans,
soloist. The selections were "How Great Thou Art" and
"Beyond
The Sunset".
Casket
bearers were Harold "Bud" Carey, Kenneth Black, Dick Elliott, Dave
Walter, Howard Elder, and Orvid
Woollums.
Honorary
casket bearers were Paul Calvin, Bob Reynolds, Haldcan Wilson, Herman Haering, Dave Bell, and Mack
Pershin.
Burial
was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox with military rites given by
Parkinson Post #250 of the
Lenox
American Legion.

William Barker died December 26 at Si. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa, Iowa
following a long illness. He was
born
January 23, 1920 at Denton, Montana to W B and Mary Mason Barker.
Survivors
include his wife, Betty Rowen Barker; three sons,
Donald of Emporia, Kansas, Dennis of Portsmouth, Rhode
Island
and David of Ottumwa: a daughter, Jane Ullrick of
Ottumwa: a sister, Lois Bickford; and a brother, Kenneth F.
Barker
of Lenox, as well as other relatives.
Mr.
Barker was employed by Barker Implement and Motor Company of Lenox during the
late 1930's and the early 1940's.

were held Sunday, December 28 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Cross Shrine of
Memories Funeral Home in
Ottumwa,
Reverend A D Pringle of Ottumwa Baptist Temple officiated.
Casket
bearers were Lonnie Barker, Kenneth Bickford, Frank Barven,
Frank Leet, Francis Holsinger and Louis Steele.
Interment
was in Garden of Rose Hill Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.

A. Blaine, the daughter of Elias and Alice See Aldridge, was born July 5, 1890
in
Schuyler
County, Missouri. She died at the Clearview Nursing
Home in Mt. Ayr December 29
at
the age of ninety years, seven months and twenty-four days.
She
was united in marriage with George Blaine at Lancaster, Missouri November 23,
1906.
Ollie
was baptized in early life and became a member of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian
Church
following the family's move to Iowa in 1921. After moving to Lenox in 1937, she
transferred
her membership to the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.
She
will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; her husband, George; and two daughters,
Alma
and Allie.
Survivors
include a son, Ova Blaine of Corning; a daughter, Vada Calvin of Lenox with
whom
she had made her home for nine years prior to entering the Care Center; eight
grandchildren,
a
number of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Services
were held Wednesday, December 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian
Church in
Lenox
with Reverend Don Fisher officiating.
Roberta
Lockhart served as organist and vocalists were Gwen Maynes and Billie Jean Barker.
Selections
were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden".
Casket
bearers were Homer Teatsworth, Darrell Reynolds,
Dwight Nook, Vernal Thompson,
Jack
Refer, and Dean Weese.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery.

Harold
J. Ethington, age 85, of Ames, Iowa died February 6
at the North Grand Care Center
in
Ames.
He
was born July 1, 1895 in Ringgold county. He was a graduate of Clearfield High
School
and
attended Iowa State University. Ethington was a self
employed plumber until 1941,
when
he moved to Ames. He then was employed
as a plumber by the Palmer Plumbing
Co.
and Puffct Plumbing. A veteran of World War I, he was
a member of the American
Legion
and also a member of the Collegiate Methodist Church.
He
was preceded in death by his wife. Helen who died May 17, 1971. On February 24,
1973
he
married Clara Chastain who survives.
He
is also survived by four sons, Dean of Cedar Falls; Claire of North Oak, Minn.:
Dale of
Cedar
Falls; and Paul of Birmingham, Mich.; one daughter, Marilyn Russie of Des Moines;
seventeen
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday. February 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Adams Funeral
Home
with the Reverend Nick Saunders officiating.
Burial
was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield with graveside services at 3:30
p.m.
on
February 10.

Dr.
Gerhard Howland of Lenox died Tuesday, January 6 at Rosary Hospital in Corning
where he had been a patient
since
December 28. He was eighty four years of age.
Dr.
Howland was born May 26, 1896 in Story County, son of Lars and Kari [Carrie]
Thompson Howland.
He
graduated from Still College in Des Moines in 1926 and was a veteran of World
War I.
He
was united in marriage with Iona Pettenger January
10, 1927 at Clear Lake.
He
was a fifty year member of the Decorah American legion, a member of the Decorah
Lutheran
Church.
Decorah Masonic Lodge, Decorah Order of the Eastern Star, and also served as a
member
of the Decorah School Board.
Dr.
Howland practiced Osteopathy in Decorah from 1927 until his retirement in
1976. He and his wife
moved
to Lenox in July of 1978.
Survivors
include his wife, two sons, Dr. G Keigh Howland of
Lenox and Leland Howland of Minneapolis,
Minnesota;
two daughters. Donna Williams of Brainerd. Minnesota, and Helen Estrem of Minneapolis. Minnesota,
eleven
grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a sister, Louise Christensen of
Ames.
Visitation
of held Wednesday, January 7 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox,
followed by a prayer
service
at 8 p.m. with Reverend W C Trembly officiating.
Services
were held Friday January 8 at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Dr. Alden Hovda officiating.
Mrs.
[?] was organist and David E Judisch the
soloist. The selection was "How
Great Thou Art".
Casketbearers were J W Goodyear, Richard Simon Hansom, Dr A J Headington,
Jack Hendrickson,
William Humpal, and Frederick Reum.

was in Decorah Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Olson Funeral Home in

Gerald
Wesley Hunt of Guthrie. Oklahoma died at his home February 2 following a heart
attack.
He
was born May 8, 1939 in Lenox to Drexel and Marjorie Beadel Hunt and was a 1957
graduate
of Lenox High School.
Survivors
include two children, Jay and Susan of the home and his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs
Wesley
Crouch of Lenox.

services for Beulah D. Johnson, 86, of Lenox were held December 26 at the
Christian Church in Lenox with
Rev.
Donald Briley officiating. She died on December 23,
1980 at the Lenox Care Center, where she was a resident.
Interment
was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
Beulah
D. Stamets, youngest daughter of John N. and Hulda Stamets, was born March 4,
1894, on a farm west
of
Lenox, where her parents had homesteaded when they moved from Ohio.
When
a young girl, she united with the Blue Grove Christian Church, which she
attended all her life until
moving
to Lenox in 1929. She then transferred to the Christian Church in Lenox where
she attended until failing
health
.
On
March 18, 1914, she was united in marriage to Lester Johnson of Bedford. They
celebrated their 50th
wedding
anniversary in 1964. To this union, one daughter, Loleta,
was born. She leaves to cherish her memory
her
daughter and son-in-law, Loleta and Tip Lucas, three
grandchildren, Larry Lucas, Judy Davis and Rod Lucas and
wife
Beverly; seven great grandchildren, Lorena Lucas Gieringer and husband Larry Jo, Lane Lucas, David Pestle,
Lestine and Shawn Sickles, Gary and Kurtis Lucas, several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
One
of her greatest enjoyments in life was to have her grandchildren come to
Grandma's to get cookies from
grandma's
cookie jar. She also enjoyed her flowers and garden, even when she was not
physically able to care for them.

Roy
E. Lecdom, former resident of Lenox, was born April
6. 1892 to John and Lizzie Gipson Leedom at Novinger,
Missouri.
He died at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri Wednesday. February 4.
Mr. Leedom's birthplace was a log cabin. He attended country
schools in the Novinger, Missouri area. At the age of
sixteen,
he moved to Lancaster where he was a mail carrier and also worked in the coal
mines of the area. He served
with
the United States Army during World War I as a medical aide.
He
was united in marriage with Edith H. Jenkins March 3, 1917 at Novinger. The family » moved to Lenox in 1920 where
Mr. Leedom farmed until his retirement in 1961. He then moved
to Maryville, Missouri where he resided until his
death.
Preceding
him in death were his wife, two grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers, and
his parents.
Survivors
include three sons. Leonard of Moore, Oklahoma, Edward of Newton, Iowa, and
Donald of Ukiah, California;
three
daughters, Darlene Winslow of Lenox, Lucille Wynn and Helen Dale, both of
Ukiah, California; twenty-three
grandchildren,
several great grandchildren, two brothers, Virgil of Kirksville, Missouri and
Lloyd of Twin Fall, Idaho, as well as
many
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Saturday, February 7 at the Christian Church in Lenox with Pastor
Jack Cutbinh officiating. Lori
Wurster sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Gentle Saviour"
accompanied by Mildred Walter, organist.
Casket
bearers were Scott Bryant, Jeff Sogard, Mark Hopkins,
Floyd Bolinger, Eldon Matheny and Ronnie Nelson.
Interment
was in the North Fairview Cemetery with military rites by the Lenox American
Legion.

Ben
W. Lyles, son of W'illiam and Maude G. Hart Lyles was
born June 4, 1902 at Shambaugh,
Iowa.
He died Friday, February 6 at the Mesa General Hospital in Mesa, Arizona at the
age
of
seventy-eight years, eight months and two days.
As a
young boy, Ben attended school near Shambaugh. At the
age of seventeen, he and a
friend
worked and earned their way to northern Iowa.
He
was united in marriage with Tena Grapenthin January 7, 1925 at the home of her
parents
near Peterson, Iowa.
Ben
and Tena farmed in the Peterson area for nine years.
In 1934, they moved to southern
Iowa
where they continued to farm in the Gravity, Bedford, Lenox, and Prescott
communities.
They
resided for twenty-five years on the farm northeast of Carl they purchased in
1942.
During
these years, Ben was active with his children in 4-H, school, sports, church,
and
community
activities.
He
became a member of the Carl United Methodist Church in 1946, later transferring
his
membership
to the Prescott United Church.
In
the fall of 1967, Ben and Tena retired from farming
and made their home in Lenox. Ben
spent
much of his time doing what he enjoyed most, meeting and talking with friends.
His
carpentry
hobby, his flowers and his garden were a source of pride to him as were his
twenty
grandchildren.
The Lyles moved to Prescott in 1974 where they made their home and became
active
in the community and church. In recent years, they made their home in Lenox
during the
summer
months. For the past eleven years, they have spent the winter at the Western
Acre
Trailer
Court. He enjoyed the new friends, shuffleboard, bingo, and other court
activities.
The
love and concern he showed to the people in the Court over the years was
graciously
returned
by the many expressions of love during the last few months of his life.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, a brother, Dave, a son-in-law. Clair Perry, and
a
granddaughter,
Cherry Lyles.
Survivors
include his wife Tena of the home, a daughter Ruth
Wynn and husband Verl of
Prescott.

Iowa with Reverend Donald Briley officiating. Music
was by Joyce Perry, organist

Kenneth Lyles, soloist. The selection was "In The Garden".

bearers were Larry Wynn, Michael Perry, Steven Perry, Mark Hunter, Eugene
Perry,
and Lyle Perry.

Eugene Paisley of Scottsdale, Arizona died Monday, February 9 in Scottsdale.
He
was seventy-eight years of age.
Mr.
Paisley was born December 1, 1902 at College Springs, Iowa to Gilbert and Anne
F.
Whitlow
Paisley. He lived in Red Oak until 1949 when he moved to Colorado. In 1973. he
moved
to Scottsdale.
He
was a retired journeyman electrician for Iowa Southern Power. Mr. Paisley was
affiliated
with the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors
include a sister, Mrs. Veda Griffin of Scottsdale and a nephew.
Graveside
services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 12 at the Fairview Cemetery
in
Lenox with Reverend Dale Cunningham officiating.

Vertis
Reeder. son of Charles and Bessie Hamblin Reeder was horn at Mason, Illinois
August 1, 1908. He died at the
Trinity
Regional Hospital at Fort Dodge January 6 at the age of seventy-two years, five
months and five days.
Vertis
moved to Kansas with his parents after his birth. Following the death of his mother when he was
eighteen
months
old, he was raised by his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Arthur Hamblin of Gravity.
He was
educated in the Gravity schools and worked at various jobs for several years.
Following
his marriage to Ruth Reed at Carrolton, Missouri October 9, 1942, he opened an
implement and
appliance
business in Lenox for fourteen years.
The Reeders later moved to Pella for four years and then moved
to Pomeroy in 1960 where he operated Reeder
Oil
Company.
Vertis
was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, and at the time of his
death was also a member
of
the Wesley United Methodist Church in Pomeroy. He was a member of the Town and Country
Boosters of
Pomeroy.
Preceding
him in death were his parents.
Survivors
include his wife, a sister, Edna (Mrs Robert Stearns)
of Arapahoe, Nebraska, and three half sisters,
as
well as other relatives.
Services
were held Friday 9 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pomeroy with Pastor
Oliver Larkin officiating.
Graveside
services were conducted by Pastor Larkin at the Lenox Cemetery at 4:30 p.m.
Friday afternoon.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery.

A. Routh, the son of James William and Mary Jane
(Jennie) Yarde Routh, was
born October 12, 1898 at Alexis,
Illinois.
He died Friday, January 16 at Lenox.
Bert
moved with his family at the age of eight to the farm northeast of Clearfield.
Iowa which became known as the
Routh family farm. He was united in marriage with Pearl E. England at Creston June
14, 1919. Bert continued to farm in
the
Clearfield vicinity making his home on the same farm for forty-nine years
before retiring and moving to Lenox.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, three brothers, Frank, Fred and Glen; and two
sisters. Lola Tindle and Nettie
Tindle.
Survivors
include his wife, Pearl; a daughter, Bernadine Lavone Ecklin and husband J. E. of Diagonal; four
grandchildren.
Johnny
and Jerry of Clearfield, Judy of Creston, and Joan Mattes and husband, Stanley
of Bedford; as well as
numerous
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held at the United Methodist Church in Lenox on Sunday, January 18 at 2
p.m. with Revere Reverend W. C.
Trembly officiating. Norma Paymal was the organist and Darl Bell the soloist.

G. Shawler, the son of James O. and Sallie Chancy Shawler, was born April 12, 1906 in Clearfield. He died
Saturday.
January 24 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of
seventy-four.
Orville
lived in Council Bluffs as a young man. He farmed in the Clearfield, Lenox and
Kent areas before moving to
Creston
in 1956.
He
was united in marriage with Lucille Hewitt May 13, 1933 at Grant City,
Missouri. Mr. Shawler was also employed
by
Wellman Dynamics in Creston. He retired in 1971. He was a member of the United
Presbyterian Church in Creston
and
was also a member of the I.0.0.F. Lodge in Creston.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Survivors
include his wife, Lucille; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret (Vyrle)
Baker of Red Oak, Mrs. Wanda (Carl)
Dowdell and Mrs. Janice (Ronald) Spurr, both of Creston; a
son. Gregory also of Creston; fifteen grandchildren;
six
great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Barngrover of Colorado Springs, Colorado: three brothers Robert
Shawler of Petaluma, California, Bryan Shawler of San Rafael,
California, and James Shawler of Lenox.
Services
were held Tuesday, January 27 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in
Creston with Reverend Dale
Cunningham
officiating. Mrs. Judy Gale was the organist. Selections were "Ivory
Palaces" and 'How Great Thou Art".
Casket
bearers were Mr. Shawler's grandsons, Rodney Bell.
David Calvin. Jerry Calvin, Michael Calvin, Jody Dowdell,
and
Billy Smart.
Interment
was at the Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home of Creston
was in charge
of
arrangements.
A
memorial was established to the American Heart Association.

Floyd
A. "Buck" Williams, the son of Alex and Rose Graham Williams, was
born June 24, 1897 near Macedonia.
Iowa.
He died at Rosary Hospital in Corning December 29 at the age of eighty-three
years, six months and five days.
He
was united in marriage with Louise Schrader January 19. 1922 at Corning. The
first fourteen years of their married
life
was spent farming near Carl. Iowa. In 1936. the couple moved 10 Prescott where
they have made their home. "Buck",
as
he was known to his friends, worked in the blue grass and seed business for
some time and (hen in construction until his
retirement.
He
took great pride in the friendships he had developed over the years in the
Prescott community and he loved the
small
town environment. He dearly loved the time he was able to spend with his
family, especially his grandchildren.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, a daughter, Marjorie Fullford in 1969; a son-in-law, John Fullford in
1974;
a grandson, David Fullford in 1973; three
brothers, Lawrence, Roy and Ray; and three sisters, Nina Fitzgerald, Beulah
Duncan
and Nellie Peairs.
Survivors
include his wife, Louise of Prescott; a son. Ross Williams and wife Phyllis of
Kansas City; a daughter. Lois
Townsend
and husband Harold of Bedford; ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren,
and four sisters, Ethel Nelson of
Lenox.
Hazel Hiatt of Phoenix, Arizona; Myrtle Williams of Red Oak. and Gladys Bradley
of Mt. Clair. California.
Services
were held Wednesday, December 31 at 1:30 p.m. at the Prescott United
Church with Reverend Larry Davidson officiating.
Clarice Outhier. organist, played the selection. "How
Great Thou Art".
Casket
bearers were Don Schrader. Clifford Schrader, Lyle Nelson. Raymond Williams, Carl Williams, and Harold Walter.
Honorary
bearers were Leo Latus. Ray Truman, Ronald Johnston.

was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Prescott.
