Andrews, John S -
John
S Andrews passed away and was buried at Boulder City, Nevada April 30th. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs Daisy Moore of Sharpsburg.
He
and his wife Helen spent several months in and around Lenox in the early 40s and
will be remembered here by many.

Austin, Lois Pearl Powell

Mrs.
George Austin, 52, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Thursday evening,
April 4th at the home of her mother-in-law, Phoebe Austin in Lenox.
Lois
Pearl Austin was born December 25, 1921 to Emory Leon and Edna Steel Powell at
Massena, Iowa. Her growing years were spent in Taylor and Ringgold counties.
She
was united in marriage to George Austin on September 7, 1952, at Creston, Iowa.
She was baptized and received into the membership of the Lenox Methodist Church
December 3, 1973.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, Eddie Dale Powell. She
leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, George, two brothers, Hurley Powell
of Blockton,
and
Dale Powell of Adel, Iowa, five sisters and their husbands, Mrs Everett (Leona) Bolinger of Conway, la., Mrs. Eugene
(Alice) Reimer of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, Mrs. Arvid (Shirley) Woolums of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, Mrs. Howard (Lela) Brown of Council Bluffs, and
Mrs. Pete (Ruth) Cavender of Mount Ayr, two sisters-in-law, Virginia of Blockton and Pauline of Elliott, five nieces and fourteen nephews, one great niece,
three great nephews and two nephews-in-law, her dear mother-in-law, Phoebe
Austin of Lenox and a brother-in-law, Claude Austin and his wife Eloise of
Omaha, Nebr., other relatives and a host of friends also survive.
Mrs.
Austin had been in failing health for several years but never ceased doing for
others. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Lenox United Methodist Church Sunday
afternoon, April 7 at 2 p.m., with Rev Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished toy Norma Paymal, organist, Marilyn
Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists.
Bearers
were Herman Haering, Eldon Bose, Donald Trost, Raymond Trost, Walter
Brokaw and Robert Reynolds.
Interment
was in North Fairview cemetery.

Iowa Thursday April 11, 1974
Albert
Beck; 83, a resident of Lenox since 1954, died at the Rosary hospital in
Coining Friday evening, March 22nd 1974. Mr Beck
had been seriously ill about a month.
Albert
Beck, son of Phillip and Barbara Sager Beck, was born on a farm west of Lenox
March 5th, 1891. He was 83 years and 17 days of age at the time of his death.
Mr.
Beck was united in marriage to Esther Olsen at the home of her parents on
December 25, 1918. They resided on farms in the Sharpsburg area for S6 years
before moving to
Lenox
to 1954. To this union three sons were born: Donald and Melvin of Lenox and
Duane of Sharpsburg. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Surviving with the wife and
sons are a half brother, Charlie Beck of Lenox; 2 brothers, Johnny Beck of
Reinbeck, Iowa, Herman Beck of Idaho, 3 sisters Mary Morris of Lenox, Emma Beck
of St. Joseph, Mo and Rose Beck of Lenox, as well as nieces and nephews and a host of
friends.
Funeral services were held Monday
afternoon at 2 pm from the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev Wallace
Nelson officiating.
Music
was furnished by Normal Paymal and Gwendolyn Maynes.
Bearers
were Melvin Williams, Lloyd Hamblin, Ernest Campbell, Arthur Jones, Leland Hegwood, and Lloyd Stream.
Burial was in West Fairview cemetery.

Lorena
J. Holbrook Doig, 67, of 6956 Ferris Hill Road, San
Bernardino, Calif., died February 24th, 1974 in a San Bernardino hospital.
She
was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and at an early age came to the Lenox area where she and her mother lived
with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs George K Beach.
She graduated
from
the Lenox high school and in 1923, with her parent, moved to California, living
in San Bernardino 51 years.
Mrs. Doig was San Bernardino County librarian for 25
years, retiring from that position in 1971. Since that time, she and Mr. Doig have traveled extensively, visiting New Zealand,
Tahati,
Mexico and Jamaica.
Survivors
include her husband, A. Haldane Doig, Jr., a son
Ronald, of Lompoc, California, a daughter, Diana Morris of Harlingen, Texas,
and seven grandchildren. Numerous cousins,
an
aunt, Mrs. C. D. Hetz of San Diego, and a multitude
of friends also survive.

March 21, 1974
Mrs Lela Hayes, of 3114 East 35th St., Des Moines, died April 13th, 1974 at
Northwest hospital after a short illness. She was 71.
Mrs Hayes was born in rural Adams County and lived in Des Moines for 18 years. She
was a former resident of the Lenox area.
She
is survived by her husband Otto, 5 sons, Lyle of Des Moines, Gene of Ankeny,
Clyde of Shenandoah, Carroll of Atlantic, Tom of Glen Ellyn, Ill. one daughter, Mrs Donna Copic, of Des
Moines, a brother, Howie, a sister, Ethel McDaniels and a half brother, Darrell Wainwright. Twenty
five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive.
Services
for Mrs Hayes were held April 18th at the St Joseph
Catholic Church in Des Moines. Burial
was in the St Patrick's section of the Lenox cemetery at 1 o'clock.

Clarence
Edward Johnson, son of Nels and Minnie Johnson, died
at Kent, Feb. 25th 1974, at the age of 69 years 2 months and 28 days. He was
the son of Nels and Minnie Johnson and was born in
Ringgold county, Ia. Nov. 28, 1904.
He
grew up in Ringgold county, graduated from rural school there and attended and
became a member of the Fairview Methodist Episcopal Church.
October
8, 1925, he was united in marriage to Carrie Montieth in her parents' home at Aberdeen, South Dakota. Two daughters were born to
bless their union. One died in infancy
and
the other is Mrs. Betty Thierolf of Overland Park,
Kans.
Following
their marriage, they farmed in the Kent-Lenox vicinity where he stayed the
balance of his career with the exception of a five year period in the early 30s
when they farmed in No Dakota. Clarence was deeply interested in all aspects of
his chosen vocation and was well known for the meticulous care he took with
chores and other responsibilities associated with farming. This interest was
rivaled only by the joy he found in his grandchildren.
Surviving
to mourn his passing are his wife Carrie, daughter, Mrs. Betty Thierolf, three grandchildren, Craig, Linda and Janet Thierolf all of Overland Park, Kansas, two sisters, Mrs.
Frances Clark of Creston, Iowa, and Mrs. Lurene Slater of Gibbons, Nebr., a half sister, Mrs. Jennie Brand of Creston, several
nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral
services were conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender funeral home
in Lenox with Rev James King officiating.
Music
was furnished by Roberta Lockhart, Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker.
Bearers
were Cleo Stoaks, Leo Madden, Ernest Marckmann, Tom Neuhardt, Charles
Erickson and Cliff Kindred.
Burial
was in East Fairview cemetery.

Iowa Thursday March 7, 1974
Eldon
Jones, 62, died Thursday, March 7th at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha where he
had been a patient several weeks.
Eldon
Paul Jones was born March 15, 1911 in Union county. He was the son of Thomas W.
Jones and Olive Ethel (Butler) Hughes. His age at the time of his death was 62
years, 11 months and 21 days.
Tom
Jones preceded him in death and also his stepfather, Alison Russel Hughes, whom he loved and respected very much.
He
is survived by his loving family, his wile Eva, a daughter, Jeanette and
husband, Joe Phillips of Corning, a son Jack and wife Jerry of Lenox and his
mother, Olive Hughes. Seven
grandchildren,
Gail, Kathy, Lee Ann and Lynn Marie Phillips, Tim, Jackie and Jody Jones, two
sisters, Twila Wray of Ft. Collins, Colo., and
Charlene Shaffer of Clearfield, many nieces
and
nephews, other relatives and a host of friends also survive.
Mr.
Jones was a kind father who enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He was a
friend to many in the community in times of need and was most happy when
helping others.
He
served in the navy during World War Two. He was past Post Commander and service
officer of the American Legion Parkinson Post No. 250 of Lenox, Soldiers Relief
Commissioner, and Seventh District Sergeant-of-Arms.
Funeral
services were held at the Lenox United Methodist Church Sunday, March 10th at
2:00 p.m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Bearers
were George Grey, Harvey Spoonemore, Paul Calvin, Sam Haering, Don Keast and Don Trost.
Music
was furnished by Norma Paymal, Billie Jean Barker and
Marilyn Beck.
Special
graveside rites were performed by Parkinson Post, No. 250, American Legion of Lenox.
Burial.
was in North Fairview cemetery.

Iowa Thursday March 14, 1974
Ralph Killinger, 79, a longtime resident of the Lenox area,
died suddenly while working in his yard at his home in town Thursday. Death was caused by an apparent heart attack.
Ralph.
Virgil Killinger, son of John and Nancy Killinger, was born at Elliot, Iowa May 29, 1895. He moved
to Lenox in 1918 and farmed one and one-half miles north of Lenox until his
health failed. He moved into town only a
few months ago.
Mr Killinger joined the Methodist Church in 1918 and has
been a faithful member for more than 56 years.
He
was a veteran of World War I.
He
was survived by two brothers, John R Killinger of
Somerset, Kentucky and Gordon Killinger of Gainesville,
Florida, and one sister, Dora Tripp of Kent. He was preceded in death by another sister, Lula R Killinger.
Funeral
services were held at Larkin-Bender Funeral Home Sunday April 28th at 2 pm with
Rev Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist
church officiating.
Music
was furnished by Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Cliff Preston, Tip Lucas, Alvin Brown, Walter Brokaw, Wayne O'Riley and Robert Morris.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery.

Elva
A. Knott, daughter of William L Knott and Mary Ellen Boyden, was born near
Sharpsburg, Iowa Feb 13, 1888 and passed away in Lincoln, Nebr., April 12,
1974.
Early
in life she attended Blue Grove Church, later joining the Methodist Church in
Sharpsburg.
In
1962 she transferred her membership to the St. Mark Methodist Church in
Lincoln.
At
eighteen she started a teaching career which lasted fifty two years. Twenty eight of these years were spend in
Fort Collins, Colorado.
She
was preceded in death by three sisters, Violet Scott and Maude Weller of Sharpsburg, Jessie Rice
of Lincoln, two brothers, Bert Knott of McAllen, Texas and Charlie Knott of
Sharpsburg.
She
leaves to mourn her loss a sister, Oma A. Eno and brother-in-1aw, Lyle Eno,
a sister, Ila M Smith and brother-in-law Charlie
Smith, a sister-in-law, Ida Knott of McAllen, Texas, eighteen nephews and
nieces and many friends.
Burial
was in Lincoln, Nebr.
Pall
bearers were five nephews, Leonard Knott, Bill Scott, Donald Scott, Dean
Weller, Howard Weller and a grand nephew, Steven Hyde.
Elva
will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

April 25, 1974
John McCarroll of Wickenburg, Arizona, passed away on
Tuesday, May 7th at the Wickenburg Hospital.
His
wife is the former Bernice Richard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Arlo Richard of Lenox and a graduate of Lenox High
school.
Mr. McCarroll was editor of the Wickenburg paper for 30 years
and had retired this past spring.
His services
are to be to Wickenburg, Arizona Friday, May 10.
There
will be a memorial for the Wickenburg hospital.

Mrs.
Marie (Walter) McGee, former Lenox resident, passed away April 4 in Mesa,
Arizona.
Services
were held in Mesa April 8th.
She
is survived by her husband, Ralph, son Bob, two sisters, Dorothy Layland of Audubon, Marjorie Fleming of Mesa, a brother,
Roland, and several cousins of the Lenox community.
Her
husband was a former superintendent of the local school.

Mrs Orville G Rogers, 70, of
Lenox, died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning Friday after a
lingering illness.
Nellie
Laura Smith, daughter of Charles and Laura Smith was born January 23, 1904 at
Sharpsburg, Iowa, She passed away March 8, 1974 at the age of 70 years, 1 month
and 13
days.
During her young womanhood she lived in
Sharpsburg where she united with the Presbyterian Church, later transferring
her membership to the Lenox Methodist Church.
She
was married March 16, 1921 to Orville G, Rogers of Lenox. Four children were
born to this union: Mrs Evelyne Stotler of Porttand, Texas,
Hal Rogers of Creston, who preceded
her
in death, Bobby Rogers who preceded her in death and Howard Rogers of Lenox.
Besides
these members of her immediate family she leaves two loved daughters-in-law,
Mrs. Jean Rogers of Creston and Mrs. Shirley Rogers of Lenox and one
son-in-law, Tony Stotler of Texas. Also left to mourn
her are 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Mark
Robinson of Lenox and Mrs. Sim Beemer of Conway and
one brother, Donald Smith of Bedford and Dr. Philip Smith of Chicago who
preceded her in death in 1949 and a host of loved nieces and nephews.
Funeral
serviced were held at the Lenox United Methodist Church Monday, March 11th at 2
p.m., with Rev, Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Bearers were Lee Crowell, Dr E E Pennebaker, Robert Morris, Don
Tully, J D Arneal and Bill Barrans.
Music was furnished by Normal Paymal, Helen Brokaw and Billie Jean Barker.
Burial was in east Fairview cemetery.

Clark
Taylor, long time resident of Taylor County, died suddenly at his home in Lenox
March 1st.
Clark
S Taylor, only son of Albert C and Effie Thompson Taylor, was born
January 19, 1904 in Bedford, Iowa. He passed away March 1, 1974, at his home in
Lenox at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 10 days. He spent most of his life in
Taylor county. He worked as a clerk in
various clothing firms. His last employment was with Dale's Clothing from which he retired in 1970.
Mr.
Taylor was a Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He
was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Vera Martin. Left to
cherish his memory are three sisters, Susie Brown of Lenox, Ruby Speelman and her husband, Adley of
Creston,
Helen Hamblin and her husband Lloyd. Also three nephews, Gary Hamblin of
Oakland, Iowa, Richard Hamblin of Fort Collins, Colo., William Martin of
Corning, N. Y., and
one
niece Karen Martin of Chicago, Ill., and seven grand nieces
He
was a kind and loving brother and will be sadly missed by his family as well as
other relatives and many friends.
Services
were held March 5, 1974 at 2 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender funeral home with Rev.
Wallace Nelson officiating.
Music was, furnished by Norma Paymal.
Casket bearers were Dale Purdum, Ed Richey, Bing Miller, Ernie Campbell, David
Ferris, and Marven Reed.
Interment was in West Fairview
cemetery.

Louis Vanderpluym, son of John and Wilhelmina Vanderpluym was born July 24, 1888 in Hanks Holland, and
departed this life April 7, 1974 at Ringgold County Hospital.
On
April 16, 1917, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth McMannus at Lenox, Iowa. To this union six children
were born.
Lou
was a retired farmer of Lincoln township and had his home in Mt Ayr since he retired
in 1969 until July 1973 when he went to make his home at Clearview at Clearfield.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth in 1971 and one infant daughter.
He
is survived by one son, Paul of Diagonal and four daughters, Veldeva Rees of Winterset, Martena Mobley of Benton, Lucille of Lehigh and Frances Ricker of Mt Ayr. A niece,
Catherine Morley of Lenox was also
raised in the Vanderpluym home. He is also survived by eight grandchildren,
and 11 great grand children.
Funeral
services were held April 10th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy with Rev, Frs. McIlhon and Hoffmam conducting masg.
Burial
was in Calvary cemetery at Creston.

Thomas
Walter Walston, son of Silas Rude and Mary Ellen
(Sharp) Walston, was born July 29, 1897 in Taylor
county near Blockton, Iowa, and departed from this
life April 27, 1974 at the Lenox Care Center. He was 86 years, 8 months and 27
days of age at the time of death.
He
spent his younger years in the vicinity of Platteville, rural Bedford, Iowa. It
was near there that he became a member of the Baptist Church. His mother passed
away when he
was
in his teens and he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Raper.
He
was united to marriage to Cora May Weese
on February 2, 1910, at the home of the bride's parents near Sheridan, Mo. God blessed this union with 11
children.
Tom
and his wife Cora lived most of their lives on farms in Ringgold and Taylor
counties, except for years in Strahan, Iowa where he
was school custodian, after which he retired to Sharpsburg, Iowa. In 1973 they celebrated their 63rd
anniversary.
Preceding
him death were his beloved wife, Cora
May, two infant daughters, Cora Sue and Pearl Mae, a son Donald at the age of
27 years and one grandson, Edward Walston. Also his parents. Tom was the youngest of a family of 15 , all
preceding him in death, five sisters and nine brothers.
Left
to cherish his memory are his children, Hazel Hoover of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Vane
of Bedford, Iowa, Nina Rice of Stow, Ohio, Elsie Preston of Lenox, Iowa, Gerald
of New Ulm, Minn., Elvin of Kansas City, Mo., and Verle of Sharpsburg, Iowa, four daughters-in-law, Thelma, Janet, Marjorie and Mary Walston, 3
sons-in-law, Ralph Hoover, Delbert Rice, and Clifford Preston, 23 grandchildren
and 30 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Services
were held April 30, 1974 at 3:30 pm at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in
Bedford, Iowa with Carl Cummings officiating, with interment in Platteville
Cemetery, rural Bedford.
Pallbearers
were John Walston, Robert Walston,
Charles Preston, Glen Walston, Don Waltston and Mike Walston.
Honorary
pallbearers were Gary Hoover, Tom Preston, Larry Walston,
Patrick Walston, Randy Walston and David Walston.
