Andrews, Maurice W -
Maurice
Andrews, 33, of Kansas City, Mo., died at Veterans hospital there Tuesday
afternoon. He had been brutally beaten December 3rd and had never regained
consciousness. Mr. Andrews suffered brain damage and was given little chance to
survive after surgery was performed to remove a clot on the brain.
He
graduated from high school in Lenox and was married to Kathryn Reis, who
survives.
There
are also three children, two daughters, 12 and 10, and a son, 11. He also
leaves his mother, Mrs. Edna Andrews of Lenox, his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Geo. Reis of Kent, other relatives and a host of friends.
The
body was scheduled to arrive at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox some time
Wednesday, where a Rosary will be said Friday evening at 7:30.
Funeral
arrangements are not complete but will be Saturday morning at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Lenox with Father Reginald Maslinski officiating.
Burial will be in Lenox.

Maurice
W. Andrews, son of Will J. and Edna Andrews, was born in Montgomery county,
Jan. 12, 1937, and passed away at the VA hospital in Kansas City, Mo.,
Jan.
5, 1971 at the age of 33 years, 11 months.
He
started school in Red Oak and moved to the Lenox school system in first grade.
He graduated in June, 1955 and attended Northwest State Teachers college in
Maryville, Mo. He entered the United States Air Force in June, 1956 and
received his discharge in June, 1960. Three years of that time was spent in Anchorage,
Alaska. After service he was with MONY six years and more recently worked for Acoustica Sales Co.
He
was united in marriage to Kathryn Reis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Reis,
on Nov. 11, 1956 She survives, along with three children, Victoria Lynn,
Gregory Wayne and Sheryl Marie. Also mourning his passing are his mother, Mrs.
Edna Andrews, his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Reis, many
other relatives
and
a host of friends.
Services
were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox Saturday morning at 10
a.m., with Father Reginald Maslinski officiating,
assisted by Father Lloyd Opoka of Saint Theresa,
Little Flower Parish in Parkville, Mo.
Bearers
were Jack Jones, Lary Refer, Larry Rogers, Paul
Brokaw, Mervin Walter and LaRell Wilkinson.
Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Francis
M. Barker, 89, longtime resident of the Lenox community, died at Clarinda
Friday, where he had been hospitalized.
Francis
Marion Barker, son of Stephen E. and Elizabeth Holt Barker, was born at
Schuyler, Mo., on December 12, 1880 and departed this life on Dec. 4th,
1970
at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. Had he lived until Dec. 12, he
would have been 90 years of age. He spent the first 30 years of his life in
Missouri, then moved to Iowa where he spent the rest of his life. He moved to
the Lenox community in 1920. He devoted his entire life to farming.
On
June 9, 1912, he was married to May Wilson Goecker at
the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Goecker at Yorktown, Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
He
is survived by his wife, May, an adopted son, Lowell, who lives at home, a
sister-in-law, Margaret Sisk of Council Bluffs, Iowa, two brothers-in-law,
Harry Goecker of Sarasota, Florida, Harold Goecker and wife of Council Bluffs, Iowa, nieces, nephews
and other relatives and friends.
On
June 9, 1902 he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at
their farm home.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home Sunday, Dec. 6th at 2
p.m., with Rev. Don Briley, pastor of the Christian
Church, officiating.
Music
was furnished by Irma Wilcox and Sandy Barker.
Bearers
were Paul Chitty, Lester Day, Merle Moose, Paul Winslow, Reldon Beadel and Leonard Knott.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in
Lenox.

Mrs.
Eula Beach died at her home on Temple street Saturday, November 28th.
Eula
Elizabeth Page, daughter of Emery and Mary Ann Page, was born July
31,1889 near Lenox and died November 28th, 1970 at her home.
She
was joined in marriage to Clifford S. Beach in 1909 and to this union were born
ten children. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford, three sons, Haldene, Donald and Dale, one granddaughter, Myra and one
grandson, Jerry.
She
is survived by seven children, Robert of Springfield, Va., Luella Chandler of
Van Nuys, California, Walter of Dallas,
Texas, Marjorie Steinke of Manhattan Beach, California and Bill Beach,
Josephine Walter and Elizabeth Nook of this vicinity. She is also survived by
26 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one cousin, Stella,
one
sister-in-law, Nellie Hetz and a host of nieces and
nephews.
Mrs.
Beach lived all her life in this vicinity. Prior to her married life, she
taught school in Sharpsburg and Bedford. Her married life was spent on a farm
south of Lenox, and following her husband's death, she moved to her present
residence in Lenox.
She
was a devoted mother and grandmother and her devotion to family and friends
showed in various ways in the community through her club and church work. She
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Lenox Fortnightly Club, M.F.O;
Club, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Jolly Neighbors
Club and Birthday Club. She was active as usual on the last day of her life and
passed away peacefully in her sleep as would have been her choice.
Funeral
services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 1st at 2 p.m., in the United
Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wallace Nelson, officiating.
Music
was furnished by Margaret Whipp, Forrest Whipp and Roberta Lockhart.
Bearers
were Greg Nook, Fred Woolley, Robert Beach, Spencer Beach, Haldene Beach and Marvin Walter.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery in
Lenox.

Mrs.
Walter Beadel, 80, died Monday afternoon about three
o'clock at her home on a farm 3½ miles southwest of Lenox.
She
was born Oct. 27, 1890, on a farm in Adams County.
On
Dec. 25, 1912, she was married to Walter Beadel. Her
maiden name was Della Belding. They spent almost all of their married life on
the same farm where she died, and which her father-in-law had homesteaded.
Besides
her husband, she leaves three sons: Kenneth of Gravity, Reldon of Lenox and Wendell of Oskaloosa. There are 12 grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren, also a sister, Mabel Boltinghouse of
Lenox and a brother, Orval Belding of Lexington, Ky.,
who visited here a short time ago.
The
funeral will be Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in
Lenox, with the Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Burial
will be in the Lenox cemetery.
Mrs. Beadel had long been an active member of the church.
The
family will meet friends at the Bender Funeral Home tonight (Thursday).

Kenneth
Duane Beckwith, son of Cecil Dee and Louisa Thomas Beckwith, was born at Mt.
Etna, Iowa, April 30, 1911 and passed away Dec. 17, 1970. He lived in
the Mt. Etna community until his was an
adult.
On
May 18, 1938 he was married to Wilma Ambrose. To this union five children were
born: Mrs. Robert (Rebecca) Casper of Lancaster, Calif., Jesse Dee
died
in infancy, Larry Dean of Lancaster, Calif., Mrs. William (Dian) Sandoval of
Englewood, Calif. and Phyllis Marie who died in infancy.
The family lived in Adams and Union
County until they moved to California fourteen years ago on account of Duane's
health.
Those who survive are his wife, Wilma,
and 3 children, two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law and 3 grandsons. Also surviving are his mother, Louise
Beckwith of Corena, California, two brothers, Dr. F I
Beckwith of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Thomas Beckwith of Colton, California,
three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Gladys) Barnes of
Arlington
Heights, Illinois, Mrs. Albert Westphal (Fondeen) of Bridgewater, Iowa, and Mrs. Russell (Marjorie)
Dotson, of Riverside, Calif., a sister-in-law, Mrs Bertha Beckwith of Des Moines, Iowa and several nieces and nephews also
survive.
Services were held at McMillan Mortuary
of Gardenia, Calif., Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lawrence Clark,
officiating.
The
body was flown to Iowa with services at Roland Funeral Home at Corning Monday
afternoon at 1:30 with Rev. Paul Williams officiating.
Interment was made in the Fairview
Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Nurnberg,
Oliver Eyberg, Donald Wimmer,
Lyle Fluckey, Cecil Nichols and Owen Beaman.

Rolland
Buxton, long-time Lenox businessman, died suddenly Monday afternoon about 3:30
p.m., while shoveling snow at his home on North Main St.
Mr.
.Buxton was 67 years of age at the time of his death.
Mr.
and Mrs. Buxton were trying to clear the snow from their walks when he
collapsed. Don Miller and Vernal Thompson, who were nearby, carried
him
into the house and a doctor was summoned. All efforts to revive him failed.
On
Dec. 10, 1925, he was married to Ruth Edwards, who survives. He also leaves two
children, a son, Garland J. Buxton and a daughter, Katherine B.
Devine,
both of Des Moines, two grandchildren, two brothers in Creston, Clifford and
Lloyd, two sisters, Mrs. Thelma White in Texas arid Mrs Don Hill of
Corning.
There
will be a memorial established at the Lenox Christian Church in his memory.
Mr.
Buxton had operated the service station at the south end of Main street for
thirty years prior to his retirement and sale of the business to Raymond
Cain
three years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today,
(Thursday) at the Lenox Christian Church with Rev. Donald Briley,
officiating.
Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Buxton, Rolland Clair -
Rolland
C. Buxton died at his home on North Main Street Monday, January 4th, 1971, at
the age of 67 years.
Rolland
Clair Buxton, son of Robert and Mary Buxton, was born on a farm near Lenox July
30, 1903. He was united in marriage to Ruth E. Edwards December 10, 1925. To
this union were born a son, Garland and a daughter, Katherine.
He
spent most of his life operating his business, Buxton Oil Company, and after
retirement devoted his time to farm management. He was an active member of the
Lenox Christian Church where he served on the board as a deacon. He was
affiliated with Tremont Lodge, No. 343, and the Order of the Eastern Star and
participated in community affairs.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Alfred, and one sister, Alda Case.
He
is survived by his wife, Ruth, a son Garland, a daughter Katherine, her
husband, Cleatie Devine, and two grandsons, Michael
and! Timothy Devine.
Also
surviving, are two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Donald Hill of Corning, Mrs.
Thelma White of Whitehouse, Texas, Lloyd Buxton and Clifford Buxton both of
Creston.
Funeral
services were conducted Thursday afternoon, January 7th at 2: pun., from the
Lenox Christian Church with Rev Don Briley, officiating.
Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.
Lenox

The
Reverend Willis Crafts, 84, of Washington Court House, Ohio, died in his home
October 19th. The funeral and burial services were held October 21st
in
Jeffersonville, Ohio. Mr. Grafts was
pastor of the Lenox United Presbyterian
Church from 1928 to 1932.
He
is survived by his wife, Leah, a son, Paul of Plainfield, Ill., two daughters,
Mrs. William A. (Margaret) Miller of Salem, Ill., and Mrs. Catharine
Baird,
Jeffersonville, Ohio, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral
services for William Kinsey John, 80, of Des Moines, were held Nov. 16th at the
Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Mr. John died November
13,
1970, at his home after a few weeks illness. Interment was at the Glendale
cemetery in Des Moines.
Kinsey
John, son of Amos Jackson John and
Frayne Elizabeth Coy John was born Jan. 26, 1890 at Bedford, Iowa. He grew to
adulthood in Taylor county. On December 25, 1913, he was united in marriage to
Esther Van Camp and to this union three sons were born: Kenneth of Conway,
Howard of Des Moines and Ivan of Ankeny, Iowa.
They
made their home in Taylor County and Rippey, Iowa,
until they moved to a farm near Waukee, from which they retired eleven years
ago to their present home in Des Moines.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, several brothers and
sisters and one great grandchild.
He
is survived by his wife, Esther, his three sons and their wives, eight
grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother, Lawrence of Bedford, a
sister,
Lola Gillioand of Gallatin, Mo., nieces, nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Kinsey
John was a member of the West Madison Church of Christ and faithful in service
for the Lord to the time of his illness.
His
love for his flowers and garden was an inspiration to all who knew him and he
will be greatly missed.

Mrs.
Nora Meagher Kafka, 91, former resident of Lenox, and later of St. Joseph, Mo.
for 27 years, died Christmas morning at her home in Mountain View,
California.
She
was the daughter of pioneer residents of Lenox, Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Meagher, who
with Mrs. Meagher's brother, Thomas Maloney, operated
a General
Store
where the Dale Purdum Clothing is now located.
Mrs.
Kafka spent her girlhood years in the large pioneer mansion which was torn down
to erect the Ray Cheese Grocery. Many will remember the tower
with
the large clock topping the house and the two marble dogs at the front
entrance. Mrs. Kafka was the last survivor of the Meagher family,
her
husband, Joseph Meagher, having preceded her in death a few years ago. She is
survived by live sons, Leo J. Kafka, St. Joseph, MO., Victor Kafka of
Kansas
City, Mo., Paul Kafka of New York City, N. Y., Lyle Kafka of Los Angeles,
Calif., and Hal Kafka of Mountain View, California.
The
body was shipped to St. Joseph, Mo., for services and burial beside her husband
with all her sons in attendance.
Surviving cousins near Lenox are Mrs.
Esther Smith, Charles Maloney and Mary Maloney.

Orville Reed, 85, long time resident of the Lenox Community, died at Corning,
la., where he had been hospitalized.
William
Orville Reed, son of Orlando and Rose Alta Page Reed was born in Adams County
on June 24, 1885, and departed this life on December 20, 1970, at the Rosary
hospital in Corning, Iowa.
On
January 2, 1907, he was married to Erma Eva Belding.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister, one brother and
three half brothers.
He is
survived by his nine children: Eva Jones, Lewis and Bill of Lenox, Iowa, Lometa Brammer of Sharpsburg
Iowa, Lola Dillon and Nina Baker of Clearfield, Iowa, Orville of Leon, Iowa,
Charlie of Des Moines, and Donald of Alburnett, Iowa.
Also
surviving are one half-sister, Nellie Moore of St, Joseph, Mo., and three half-brothers, Fred Worm of
Peru, Iowa, Bennie Worm of Manchester, Iowa,
and
Harry Worm of California.
There
are also five daughters-in-law, four sons-in-law, thirty seven grandchildren,
twenty three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of
friends
who mourn his passing.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Methodist Church in Lenox, Iowa, Wednesday,
December 23rd, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mrs. Gene Paymal, Mrs. Lonnie Barker
and Mrs. Jim Beck.
Bearers
were Hal Pierce, Delbert Routh, Melvin Howard, LaVaughn Howard, Reldon Beadel and Johnny Reed.
Burial
was in Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Katie Sawvell, 82, died Saturday night at the Lenox Nursing
Home following a gradual decline in health.
Katie
M. Alt, daughter of Herman and Kathryn Alt, was born Dec. 10, 1887 in
Lancaster, Wisconsin. She moved with her parents at the age of two years
to
Clayton, Iowa. She was the 13th child of a family of fifteen.
She
was united in marriage to Loda Sawvell,
June 27, 1906. To this union two daughters and one son were born, Pearl
Thompson of Lenox, Iowa, Sylvia
Jeppesen and Floyd Sawvell, both of Wall, So. Dak.
She
was preceded in death by her husband in 1952.
Mrs. Sawvell is survived by 2 daughters, 1 son, one
son-in-law, Clifford Jeppesen, one daughter-in-law,
Mildred Sawvell, two brothers, Albert Alt of Guttenburg, Iowa, and Herman Alt of Clinton, Iowa, eight
grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
She
and her husband homesteaded north of Wall, S. D., in 1907, where they lived
until 1944 when they moved to Lenox.
She
was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was a faithful member
until her health failed. Her age at the
time of her death was 82 years, 11 months and 11 days.
She
was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family
and friends.
Funeral
services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Lenox Tuesday
afternoon, Nov. 24th, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough,
pastor of the church, and Rev. Don Briley, pastor of
the Lenox Christian Church, officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mildred Walter and Norma Paymal.
Bearers
were Rick Thompson, Roger Thompson, Dennis Thompson, Vernal Thompson, Bud Jeppesen and Don Sawvell

James
Mark Sullivan died November 5th, 1970 at his home in Spokane, Washington. He
was the son of Joseph R. and Margaret Sullivan.
Mr.
Sullivan was born June 2, 1910 in Adams County, Iowa and in October, 1949, was
united in marriage to Naomi Dow of Newton, Iowa. To this union, two
daughters
were born, Camille and Lynn, who with their mother, survive. Also a sister,
Helen Eberle of Lenox and a brother, Raymond of
Corning mourn his loss.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, a brother, Charles, who
died Jan. 20 of this year. He attended the four C's business school in
Des
Moines and received a degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. In
1949 the family moved to Spokane.
Mr.
Sullivan was a World War II veteran, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He was a
member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Spokane.
Rosary
was said Nov. 8th at 7:30 p.m. The funeral mass was held Monday, November 9th
at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Father Paul Henning officiating.
Burial was in Holy Cross cemetery in
Spokane.
Lenox

Virgil
Owen Vincent, longtime Taylor County resident, and father of Mrs. Helen
Campbell of Lenox, died Sunday, December 20tih in the Rosary hospital at
Corning.
Mr.
Vincent, the son of Elbridge and Clara Steele Vincent, was born in Taylor
County, Iowa, near Sharpsburg, December 18, 1885 and died after an extended
illness.
On
May 1, 1920, he was united in marriage to Ferne Nevius of Bedford, Iowa, at the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. J. Nevius. To this union was born one
daughter. He spent nearly all of his life farming and in business in Taylor Co.
When he retired from farming because of ill health, he and his wife moved to
Lenox to be near their daughter and family.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Otho Vincent.
Survivors
include his wife, Ferne, his daughter, Helen Campbell
and her husband Ernie, a granddaughter, Mrs. Eric (Susan) Fuhrmeister of North Liberty, Iowa, a grandson, Bill Campbell of the U. S. Marine Corps
stationed at Ft. Holabird, Maryland, two sisters,
Mrs. George (Alice) Segriff of Cedar Rapids and Mrs.
Bert (Ida)
Knott
of McAllen, Texas, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, December 22nd at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in
Bedford with interment at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.
Pallbearers
were Cliff Templeton, Bryan Mohler, Bus Williams,
Harry Burmeister, Lawrence Kirby and Harry Baker.

Hugh
Wilson, 76, of Exeter, Nebraska, died about noon Monday, December 28th at a
hospital in Friend, Nebraska. Mr. Wilson had been hospitalized earlier
following
a heart attack and had responded to treatment when he suffered a second attack
Monday.
Survivors
include his wife, Anna, two sons and two daughters, ten grandchildren and other
relatives.
He
was the father of John Wilson, who recently purchased the Lenox Super Valu. The family left Tuesday and will remain in Exeter
until after the
funeral. Services are pending.

Robert
J. Young, son of Henry H. and Jannie Yates Young, was
born on a farm seven miles northwest of Lenox, Iowa, July 7, 1891, and passed
away at the
Prairie
Village Rest Home, Omaha, Nebraska, Nov. 15, 1970 following a heart attack.
His
father died when he was a small boy. The mother and children continued living
on the farm. After some years Bob, as he was known to his friends, farmed for
himself about a mile south of the home place. Later he moved to a farm near
Cromwell where he resided until his health failed.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lynden and Harold and a
sister, Isabelle, who died when a young girl.
He
is survived by his brother Lynden's three daughters, Iva Shawler,
Lenox, Iowa, Belma Hartman, St. Joseph, Mo., and
Leola Wurster, Kent, Washington,
and
his brother Harold's son, Robert D., of Winterset, Iowa and daughter, Nancy Vicker of Creston, ,Iowa.
Funeral
services were held at the Bender Funeral home in Lenox Thursday , afternoon at
2:00 p.m. with Rev Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the
United Methodist Church, officiating.
Bearers
were Don Tully, Earle Lillie, Wm. Nixon, Wm. Westlake, Lee Bridgeman and Robert
Donaldson.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
