Andrews, William J.
William
J. Andrews, 75, a long time resident of
Lenox, died Thursday October 31, following a period of hospitalization.
Mr.
Andrews, the son of John F. and Ella Andrews, was born in Mahaska County, Iowa July
26, 1893. He received his early education in that community and later attended
the Penn School of Commerce in Oskaloosa.
Upon
completion of his commerce school studies he found employment with the Hawkeye
Lumber Co., serving that organization a short time before entering
the
service of his country during World War I. He was a member of Headquarters
Company, 349th Infantry of the 88th Division, serving from June 24, 1918 until
June 19, 1919.
After
being mustered out of service he returned to the home farm, staying until 1926
when he joined the Hawkeye Lumber Co. at Red Oak, Iowa, as bookkeeper
and
assistant manager.
He
was united in marriage to Edna Carlson on July 6, 1929. This union was blessed
with two sons, Bille jr.,
who died in infancy and Maurice Wayne.
In
1942 Mr. Andrews was appointed manager of the Lenox Hawkeye Lumber Company and
the family has resided here ever since then. Mr. Andrews retired from
the
Lumber company in August, 1958.
He
became a member of the Lenox Christian Church by letter in 1944 and served
faithfully as Deacon until ill health no longer permitted. He was also active
in
school and civic affairs. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Tremont, No.
343, AF and AM and also served as a commander of the local Legion Post.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Edna and son Maurice, daughter-in-law,
and three grandchildren. Two brothers, Herbert Andrews of New Sharon,
Carl
Andrews of Oskaloosa and one sister, Mrs. Mae Eflin of New Sharon, plus several nieces, nephews and a host of friends who also
mourn his passing.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, Nov. 2nd at 2 p. m. from the Christian Church with
Rev. David Shaeffer officiating.
Music
was furnished by Helen Brokaw, Billie Jean Barker and Ruth Boltinghouse.
Bearers
were J. D. Arneal, Carl Spring, Orville Rogers, Pearl
Reynolds, Claude Reynolds, and Dr. E R. Pennebaker.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Leon
M. Bassett was born in Corning, Iowa July 25, 1921. He passed away Nov. 29,
1968 at St. Marys Hospital in Syracuse, N, Y., after
a lingering illness. He
spent
the early years of his life in Lenox, Iowa graduating with the class of 1939.
He spent five years in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II.
On
Nov. 3, 1944, he was married to Mary Helen Harding of Geneva, N. Y. They have
lived the past fourteen years in Syracuse, N. Y., where Leon was employed
most
of these years as Service Manager for the Floral Park Sales, Inc.
Funeral
services were held Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Falardeau Funeral Home in Baldwinsville, N. Y, with interment at Syracuse.
He
is survived by his wife, Mary Helen, one son, John and wife Laura and his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Bassett and a number of other relatives.

Iowa Thursday December 12, 1968
Myra
D. Beach, 17, of Ankeny, was killed Sunday in a two car, one-truck accident
near Osceola on interstate Highway 35. She was the daughter of Mrs. Brainard Lee Stallings of Ankeny, and a former Lenox
resident.
Funeral
services will be held today at 1 p. m. at the United Methodist Church in Ankeny
with burial in the Lenox cemetery.
Survivors
include her mother, her stepfather, Brainard Lee
Stallings, two brothers, Michael Beach of Ames and Martin Beach of Ankeny, a
stepsister,
Mrs Carole Gruememeier of Omaha, Nebr., and two
grandmothers, Mrs. Eula, Beach of Lenox and Mrs. Helen Phipps of Greenfield,
Ind.
Miss
Beach was a clerk-typist for Look Magazine in Des Moines.

Brown, Ruth Williams -
Mr.
and Mrs. Milford Brown, of Estherville, Iowa, were killed Tuesday evening,
December 10 in a train-car collision near that city. Mrs. Brown was a sister
of
Orville Williams, of Lenox.
Survivors
include a daughter in Minneapolis, Minnesota and a son in Wisconsin.
Funeral
services were conducted Friday afternoon at Estherville, which Mr. Williams
attended.

Verna
Burton, a resident of the nursing home in Lenox, died Sunday, Dec. 15th
following a gradual decline in health.
Verna Scott, daughter of William S. and Emma, Scott, was born in Charles City,
Iowa, on January 17, 1881 and departed this life in the Lenox Nursing Home at
Lenox, Iowa, on December 15, 1968, at the age of 87
years,
10 months, and 28 days. For the past three months, she had been very ill, being
confined in the Lenox Nursing Home and in the Corning Hospital.
Verna
considered an education a very valuable asset to her life. After her High
School graduation from Oelwein, she attended college at Cedar Falls, where she
received a degree in English and Literature. She taught at Nora Springs and
later at Springdale. Iowa. It was in Springdale where she was serving as
principal that she
met
Clifford E. Burton, the Superintendent of Schools, to whom she was united in
marriage on September 14, 1905, by Bev. Moody in a home wedding at
Oelwein. To this union four sons were born: Albert Scott, Clifford Edgar,
Richard Paul, and John Keith, who passed away September 15, 1930. The first
year of their marriage was spent in Iowa City where both attended the
University. For the next several years, they lived and taught at Manning, Odebolt
and Sheldon, Iowa.
Leaving
the teaching field in 1914, they began fanning on the Burton home place near
Norwich, Iowa, where they resided for 18 years. After purchasing a farm east of
New Market in 1931, they moved there and farmed for 13 years. For health
reasons, they moved to California in 1945 where their residences became Spring
Valley
and
Claremont, finally locating at Pomona, where she entered the nursing profession
for 15 years. After her husband's death in January, 1960, Verna moved
to
New Market where she resided until 1962, when she then chose to spend her
remaining years at the Lenox Nursing Home. In this home she received loving
care from the Thomas' who managed it.
In
the fall of 1955, the Burtons drove from California to celebrate their Golden
Wedding Anniversary on the Richard Burton farm east of New Market. This was a
happy reunion of relatives, former friends, and neighbors of the several
communities in which they had lived.
Preceding
Verna in death were her husband, a son, a girl, Elsie Hosley White, whom they had reared and educated, several sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law.
She
leaves to cherish her memory, the three sons: Albert and his wife Verla of Pueblo, Colorado, Edgar and his wife Mary of
Villisca, Iowa and Richard and his wife Elsie Bose of New Market. Iowa. One
sister, Georgia Schmidt of Birmingham, Alabama, two brothers-in-law, Frank
Gilmore of Red Oak, Iowa and Richard Schmidt
of
Des Moines, Iowa, nine grand children, ten great grandchildren, one niece, one
nephew, and a multitude of friends.
Verna's
life was one of various activities and interests. For many years she was
active in D.A. R., 4-H, Eastern Star, Bible School teacher, and community
clubs. She was an Eastern Star member for over fifty years.
She was
employed at the Mental Health Institute at Clarinda for several years. Until
her recent illness, she taught a Bible Sunday School Class at Lenox Methodist
Church.
She became a member of the Norwich Methodist Church when they farmed near
there, later transferring her membership to the Church in New Market and at the
time of her death she was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, the
Women's Society of Christian Service and the Lenox Mayflower Study Club.
Memorial
services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in New Market on
Wednesday, December 18 with, Rev. Floyd Newbrough of
Lenox in charge.
Interment
was in Baker Cemetery near Norwich, Iowa at the side of her husband.

Word
was received Monday of the death of Thomas J. Chandler, 70, of Missoula,
Montana. Mr. Chandler, a former resident of the Lenox-Clearfield area, had been
a resident of Missoula for the past five years.
Survivors
include two daughters, Mrs. Francis Routh of Diagonal
and Mrs. John Davenport of rural Lenox. A brother, Lloyd Chandler, is
hospitalized at Iowa City following severe injuries received in an automobile
accident last summer. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Sylvia Brown of Creston.
Funeral
services are pending, but will be held from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox.
The
family prefers a Memorial fund in place of flowers.

Chandler,
Thomas Jefferson -
Thomas
Jefferson Chandler, son of T. J. and Mary Chandler, was born on March 23, 1898
at Brentwood, Arkansas and passed from this life at St. Patricks
Hospital
in Missoula, Montana on December 29, 1968, at the age of 70 years, 9 months and
6 days.
His
boyhood days were spent in Arkansas and Illinois. The family moved to a farm
east of Lenox, Iowa in 1915.
During
World War I he volunteered for military service and served in the Coast
Artillery in California.
Thomas
was united in marriage to Fannie Rhoades of Lenox in 1920. To this union was born
three daughters, Marjorie of Lenox, Velda of
Diagonal, and her twin sister Velma, who died shortly after birth. They had
farmed and lived in the Kent, Lenox and
Clearfield communities.
After
his retirement he enjoyed living in Montana where he had close relatives. The
family of his sister-in-law, Pearl, enriched his life during his residence
there.
Her great - grandchildren were a source of much pleasure to him.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie, the baby daughter, a baby grandson,
Noel Davenport, two brothers, Fielden and C. H.
Chandler, and his parents.
Left
to cherish his memory are Marjorie Davenport of Lenox, Velda Routh of Diagonail, his grandchildren,
Mrs. Connie McDaniel, Mrs. Vicki Fischer, Kathleen, Julie Ann, Joan and Jim Routh, a great-grandson, Neal Fischer and his sons-in-law, John
and Francis.
Also
his brother, Lloyd Chandler of Sharpsburg, his sister, Mrs. Delia Fine of Mount Ayr, Mrs. Lottie Wortman of
Denver, Mrs. Bertha Barker, Central City,
Colorado,
Mrs. Belle Honeycutt, Hamilton, Montana and Mrs. Sylvia Brown of Diagonal and a
host of other relatives and friends.
Mr.
Chandler was of a quiet disposition and found much pleasure in caring for his
family members. He loved the out-of-doors and it was there that he found a
nearness to God, his creator. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Win
C. Davidson, 85, former president of the Omaha Livestock Exchange, died
Thursday in Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Davidson was associated with the Bowles
Livestock Commission Company in both Chicago and Omaha during his lifetime, and
was a senior partner with that firm in Omaha for many years. He has lived in
retirement
in
Tucson for the past 15 years.
He
was the oldest of six children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Davidson,
longtime former residents of Lenox. His parents, two brothers, Earl and Harry,
and
a small sister preceded him in death.
Survivors
include his wife, Margaret and two brothers, Virgil and Craig both of Los
Angeles, California.
Services
were Saturday, October 12, 1968 at tine Arizona Mortuary with burial in Tucson.

Arthur
J. Hayes, son of Emma and James Hayes was born on a farm southeast of Lenox
Jan. 23, 1913 and departed this life Oct. 18, 1968 at his home in Yuma,
Ariz.
His family moved to Lenox when he was a year old where he attended school,
graduating with the class of 1931.
His
health failed in 1949 and he went to San Diego, Calif.
He
was married to Rose Rechsteiner in August, 1951. They
later move to Yuma, Ariz., where he lived the past 15 years. He was a real
estate agent affiliated
with
Stephenson Realty.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors
are his wife Rose, one brother, three sisters, Ralph Mayes, Mrs Dessa Teply of Des Moines,
Mrs. Verna Phillips and Mrs. Gertrude Beatty of Lenox.
Funeral
services were held at St. Francis Catholic Church Monday, Oct. 21,1968 at 10 a.
m. Burial was at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park, Yuma, Ariz.

John
A. Kimpton was born Sept. 27, 1884 in Taylor County,
Iowa near Guss to Cornelius Philip Kimpton and Emma
Ackerman Kimpton. He died Dec. 20, 1968 at Northgate
Manor in Corning, at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 23 days.
He
grew up with his 3 brothers and 2 sisters on the farm where he was born. He
completed the 8 grades at Skinner School. He spent most of his life farming
in
the vicinity of Gravity, with the exception of 3 years spent working at the
Mental Health Institution at Clarinda.
On
Dec. 26, 1906, he was united in marriage to Ethel Clara Beery. To this union 7 children
were born: Homer Kimpton of Gravity, Mrs. C. L.
(Edith) Hendrickson of Lenox, Wilbur Kimpton of
Council Bluffs, Paul Kimpton who died in 1923 at the
age of 10 years, Mrs Lex (Vida) Snyder of Winterset, Mrs. Byron (Iva) Heller of Burlington Junction,
Mo., and Mrs. Carl (Lois) Anderson of Winterset.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Ethel, his
son, Paul, a grandson, Homer Kirk Kimpton, his
parents, 2 brothers, Frank and Fred, 2 sisters, Margaret Wheel and Jessie
Rogers, 1 half brother Charles and 6 half sisters, Fannie Kimpton,
Allie Hummel, Jennie French, Edna Gorsutch, Lucia Marsell and Nellie White.
Left
to mourn his loss are his children, 4 sons-in-law, 2 daughters- in-law, 1
brother, Charles and wife of Sterlington, Iowa, 16 grandchildren, 13 great
grandchildren
and
many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial
services were held Monday, Dec. 23, 1968 at the Christian Church in Gravity
with Rev. Buff Scott Jr. officiating. Interment was at the Guss Cemetery,
Music
was furnished by Mildred Johnson and Garland Fickess.
Pallbearers
were Jay Lovitt, Willard Marsh, Robert Burwell,
Charles Huss, Ray Stamps and Leslie Roush.

Thursday January 2, 1967
Mrs.
Delbert Leet of Millard, Nebraska, died Nov. 21st at
1:15 p. m. from acute leukemia. She had been in ill health about a year. Mrs. Leet was a teacher and
taught
in the Millard school system.
Survivors
include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Barker of Corning, two sons, a
daughter, a daughter-in-law, three brothers and a sister. Kenneth Barker of
Lenox is a brother of Mrs. Leet.
Services
were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at Countryside Baptist Church in Millard
with burial beside her husband at Glenwood, Iowa.
Mr.
and Mrs. Kenneth Barker, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Barker of Lenox, and Mr. and Mrs W. B. Barker of Corning attended the final rites.

Charles Calvin Overholtzer,
youngest son of Jacob and Mary McDowell Overholtzer was born near Grand River March 20th, 1884, and passed away at the Decatur
County Hospital, Sunday December 1, 1968 at the age of 82 years, 8 months and
11 days.
He received his education in the rural
schools of Decatur County. He worked on
the railroad a few years with his two brothers, John and Bill, after which they
took up farming in partnerships two miles west of Grand River, Iowa. He enjoyed farming very much and took much
pride in it. He spent the last few years
of his life with his nephew, Glen Brown, at Lenox, Iowa.
He leaves to mourn his departure two
nieces, Mrs George Garman, Murray, Iowa, Mrs Helen Henry, Sterling, Kansas, three nephews, Charley Northey, Beaconsfield, Iowa, Glen Brown, Lenox, Iowa and
several grand nieces and nephews. His
mother, father, one half-sister, two brothers, two sisters, two nieces and one
nephew preceded him in death.
Funeral services in charge of Rev.
Daniel Donelson was held Wednesday, December 4, 1968
at 2 o'clock at the Slade Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery near
Grand River, Iowa.

Mrs.
Cora Swartz, 83, died at her home Monday afternoon. Mrs. Swartz had been
removing snow from the walk and collapsed. She was discovered a short time
later by Delman Brown and a physician was summoned
but efforts to revive her failed.
Mrs.
Swartz had lived in the Lenox community for many years and had moved into town
several years ago when she and her husband retired from farming.
Survivors
include her husband, George, a son, Eugene of Lenox and a daughter, Mrs. Ila Ramsey of Prescott.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 p. m. today (Thursday) from the United Methodist
Church in Lenox, with Rev. Donald Briley of Prescott,
officiating.
Bearers
are Dale Purviance, Bernard Riley, Elvin Riley,
Roland Scott, Ivan Lucas and John Riley. Organ music will be furnished by Norma Paymal.
Burial will be in the Lenox Cemetery.

Swartz, Cora Ann Riley -
Cora
Ann Riley Swartz, daughter of John Martin and Mary Catherine (Porter) Riley was
born October 31, 1885 in Mercer Township, Adams County, Iowa and passed away
November 11, 1968 at her home in Lenox, Iowa. She was the oldest daughter in a
family of twelve.
She
was educated in the rural school at Mercer Center. She joined the Mercer Center
Methodist Church at an early age.
On
March 10, 1909 she was married to George E. Swartz at the home of her parents,
by the Rev. M. E. Harned. Their home was blessed with
two children, Ila and Eugene. They lived in Adams and
Taylor counties all their married life.
In
1918 they moved to the family home, 5 miles north of Lenox, where they lived
for over 40 years. While living in the Stringtown community
they transferred their membership to the Stringtown Community Church where they enjoyed the fellowship of the church and the Ladies
Aid as long as their health permitted them to attend.
When
they could no longer go to the Stringtown Church,
where they were so regular in attendance, they began to attend the Methodist
Church at Lenox. In this fellowship they enjoyed worshipping with a large
number of old neighbors and friends.
When
retiring from the farm, they purchased their new home in Lenox. Many happy
hours were spent in planning and landscaping their yard with beautiful trees
and flowers.
In
1959 they observed their 50th Wedding Anniversary with an open house at the Stringtown Community Church with a large attendance. They
were the first couple in the church to have that privilege. Last March they
celebrated their 59tih anniversary with a small family gathering at their home.
She
was preceded in death by: her parents, one sister, Bernice, and 4 brothers:
George, Fred, Roy, and Ralph Riley and one grandson, Edward Swartz in November
of 1967. She is survived by her husband George, her daughter Da Ramsey and husband Winfield of Prescott, her son Eugene
and wife, Estella of Lenox and by several
grandchildren,
Crystal Walvoord and husband Mark of Holland,
Michigan, Florence Swartz, a student at Ames, Edwin and Galen Ramsey of
Prescott, one sister, Evelyn Scott of Nevada, Mo., 5 brothers: Robert Riley of
Lenox, Frank and Clyde Riley of Creston, Albert Riley of Eagle Grove, Iowa and
Merrill Riley of Corning, and by
a
host of relatives and friends.
Her
life centered around her home, her family and her church.
Services
were held at the Lenox Methodist Church on November 14, 1908 at 2 P. M. with
Rev. Donald Briley officiating. Interment was at Fairview
Cemetery at Lenox.
Organ
music was furnished by Mrs. Norma Paymal. Pallbearers
were John Riley, Ivan Lucas, Elvin Riley, Ronald Scott, Bernard Riley and Dale Purviance.

services for Amy Lee Wurster, infant daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ronald Wurster were Saturday, December 7 at
Blue Grove Cemetery.

addition to the parents, she is survived by three sisters, Sheryl, Elaine and
Lori, her grandmother, Mrs. Mildred Woolley and grandfather, Chas, all of
Lenox.
