Anderson, Leon C (Swede) -
Leon
C. (Swede) Anderson, 58, died Tuesday morning of an apparent heart attack while
at work five miles east of Bedford. Mr. Anderson was a longtime employee of the
Iowa State
Highway
Commission.
He is
survived by his widow, Wilma Anderson, who is the Bedford city clerk, one son,
John who is a student at Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, two
daughters, Mrs.
Marcia
Russell of rural Bedford and Nancy at home.
Funeral
services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Bedford Baptist Church.
Burial
will be in the Fairview cemetery in Bedford.

Clara
A. Binkerd, former Lenox resident, died Sept. 8,
1971, in Whittier, California.
Mrs. Binkerd was born Dec. 29, 1885. She moved to Whittier
in 1928 with her husband, H. C. (Doc) Binkerd, who
preceded her in death in 1957.
Mrs. Binkerd moved to Alhambra and was a member of the
Alhambra United Methodist Church.
She
is survived by her son, Gerald A. (Jerry) of Alhambra, grandson, David D. of
Pleasanton, and granddaughter, Bonnie Jean Brown of Alhambra.
Mrs. Binkerd was a sister to Mrs. Lou (Edith) Anderson and
a sister of Earl Smith, whose widow, Esther, lives in Lenox.
Lou
Anderson had an egg and creamery business years ago.
Services
were held in Rainbow Chapel in Rose Hills Memorial Park in California.

Evan
L. Brannon, 65, resident of Lenox, died early Tuesday Nov. 2nd, 1971, at the
Rosary hospital in Corning where he had been a patient about two weeks.
Mr.
Brannon had served three years as a custodian at the elementary school building
prior to being forced to give up the work because of failing health. Prior to
that he worked at the Conoco station and also followed his chosen profession as
a painter.
Survivors
include his wife, Wilma, a daughter Beverly (Mrs. Kenneth Hanes) of Peabody,
Kansas, a son, Donn W of Costello, California and a
daughter, Billie Jean (Mrs. Lonnie
Barker)
of Lenox and their families.
Funeral
services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Lenox United
Methodist Church with burial in the Diagonal cemetery.
Mr. Brannon's
body will lie in state at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the
services today.

Evan
L. Brannon, only son of William and Emma Masters Brannon, was born Nov. 3rd,
1905 near Sargent, Nebr.
Evan
lost his father by death when he was only nine years of age and shortly after
this he and his mother moved to Lenox, Iowa, where Evan attended school and
grew to young manhood.
On
May 9, 1920 he was united in marriage to Wilma Woods of Diagonal, Iowa. To this
union three children were born, Beverly (Mrs. Kenneth Hanes) of Peabody,
Kansas, Donn of Castello,
California, Billie Jean (Mrs. Lonnie Barker) of Lenox.
Most
of Evan's life has been spent in Lenox and Diagonal, with the exception of nine
years spent on a farm near Butler, Mo.
Evan
was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, having first joined the
Methodist Church at Rich Hill, Mo.
Before
becoming ill, Evan had been custodian of the Lenox elementary school working up
until the day he entered the Omaha hospital where he had lung surgery. Since
then he has suffered intense pain. All that loving hands could do has been done
for him but he passed away in Rosary hospital, Corning, Iowa, early Nov. 2nd.
Evan has been a patient sufferer, never complaining.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Wilma, his daughter, Beverly and husband
Kenneth, his son Donn and wife Mary and his daughter,
Billie Jean and husband Lonnie. Also
six
grandchildren, Tony and Penny Hanes, Rachael Brannon, Lahni Jean, Todd and Lisa Barker.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and a small granddaughter, Donita Evans.
Evan
was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, and a good friend to
all. He will be greatly missed.

John Wallace Chase, a former pastor of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church, died
Oct. 24, 1971 in Santa Rosa, California. He was born February 7, 1878 in
Illinois.
Private
graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 29th at 2:00 p.m. at Las Gatos
Memorial Park with Rev. Malcolm. Gwaltney of Pilgrim
Congregational Church, San Jose, officiating.
A
memorial service was conducted at the Presbyterian Church of the Roses at Santa
Rosa, Calif., Sunday, Oct. 31st at 2:00 pm with Rev. William M. Bowen
officiating.
His
son, Sterling Chase, 651 Benjamin Rd., Santa Rosa California 95405, sent word
to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rutledge at Sharpsburg and the United Presbyterian Church
friends of
the
death of his father.

Jordan
Clapper, 78 years old, died in the Shonshone hospital
Sept. 4, 1971 at Kellogg, Idaho. He and his wife had lived in Shelton,
Washington the past 35 years and were enroute to
Lenox where they had rented the Harry Preston residence in town where they had
intended to make their home. He suffered a heart attack near Kellogg and was
hospitalized for treatment.
Surviving
are his widow, Amelia C. Clapper, son John Reagan and daughter, Wilma Jean
Huggins, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox today (Thursday), Sept.
9th at 2 pm.
Burial
will be in Blue Grove cemetery.

Clapper,
Jordan -
Jordan
Clapper died September 4, 1971, at Kellogg, Idaho, following a heart attack.
He
was born October 16, 1892 at Zanesville, Ohio, the son of John and Mary Clapper
and came to Iowa where he completed his college education and was employed at
Red Oak, Iowa.
He
was married to Irene Reagan in 1916. To this union three children were born:
John Dean and Wilma Jean and an infant daughter. His wife and infant daughter
preceded him
in
death in 1920.
Mr.
Clapper went to Creston where he was employed for several years at the Standard
Oil Company and Creston Iron and Metal Works.
On
October 7, 1929, he was married to Amelia Stanger of Creston, Iowa. In
September, 1936 they moved to Shelton, Washington where he was employed by the
Soil Conservation
Service.
Later he was employed as Secretary for the Civil Service Sheriff's Department
until retiring in 1970.
He
was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, Shelton, Washington, where he
was a charter member. He was a member of the Shelton IOOF No. 62 and Rebekah Lodge No.
7,
Southside Grange No. 1122 all in Shelton and the Red Oak Lodge, No. 1152, A. F.
& A. M., Red Oak, Iowa.
Survivors
include his widow, Amelia, son John of Houston, Texas and daughter, Wilma Jean
Huggins of Topeka, Kans. Three grandchildren and five great grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Thursday, Sept.
9th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of
the United Methodist Church officiating.
Bearers
were John Lindsey, Gerald Carruthers, Ed Ward, Vernal
Thompson, Robert Fleming and Doyle DeVoe.
Burial
was in Blue Grove cemetery.

Jennie Consolver, 71, Lenox resident, died suddenly
September 13, 1971 while visiting a niece at Ashland, Nebraska.
Survivors
include a son, Richard of Omaha, Nebr., and four grandchildren. She was the
former Jennie Manroe a sister of the late Jie, Ben and John Manroe. Mrs. Consolver's husband, Lee preceded her in death.
Funeral
services will be held today (Thursday) at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with
Rev. Donald Briley, pastor of the Christian Church
officiating.
Burial
will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Consolver,
Jennie Manroe -
Jennie,
the daughter of Francis and Emma Manroe, was born in
Lenox, Iowa, February 5th, 1900. She died Sept. 13th, 1971 in Ashland, Nebraska,
in the home of a niece, Anna Fielder, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 8
days.
She
lived most of her life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Lee L. Consolver.
She
leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Richard, daughter-in-law Mavis, four
grandchildren, Carl, Deborah, Theresa and Michael of Omaha, Nebr,
one sister, Mae Manroe
of
Madrid, Iowa, and numerous relatives.
She
returned to Lenox to make her home with her brother Ben in 1962. She remained
in the home after her brother's death until September 5th, 1971 at which time
she was moved to the home of her niece.
Funeral
services were held at the Bender Funeral home in Lenox with burial next to her
husband in Lenox, Iowa.

Jesse
Lee Delaney, longtime resident of Taylor County, died Monday, Sept. 7th, 1971
at the Veteran's hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Jesse
Lee Delaney, son of Isaac and Nettie Delaney, was born March 18, 1895 at
Villisca, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Lavaughn Johnson on Dec. 7, 1931. To this union
three
children were born, Robert of Elkhart, Indiana, Mrs Ronald (Marie) Richie of Corning and Mrs. Floyd (Deloris) Gaule of Elkhart, Ind.
He
was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Corning in 1945. Mr. Delaney was
preceded in death by three brothers, John, George and James.
Survivors
include one sister, Esther Ewart of Cody, Nebr., and
a half sister, Mrs. Ralph (Alice) Arnatt of Villisea, his wife, Lavaughn,
children, fourteen grandchildren, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law and a
host of other relatives and friends.
Jesse
served in the army in World War I from 1918 to 1919.
He
lived most of his life on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa.
Pall
hearers were Harold Donaldson, Ralph Harvey, Laurence Ohrt,
Robert Holdren, Donald Goodvin and Leo Bridgeman.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning Thursday at
1:30 pm.
Interment
was at Prairie Rose cemetery.

Relatives
here have received word of the sudden death of Bill Grant at his home in Long
Beach, California on Sunday, Oct. 3rd.
His
widow is the former Ethel Walter of Lenox. They had been here visiting and left
for home about a week ago. His age was nearly 80. His widow is the only
immediate survivor. Mr. Grant was at one time a state senator in California.
He
was a brother-in-law of Julian Walter of Lenox. Mr. Walter and his wife,
Josephine both plan to go to Long Beach for the service.

Cart Herbst, 82, died Sunday morning at Rosary Hospital in
Corning.
Carl
Evert Herbst, son of James and Louisa Herbst was born June 18, 1869 on a farm in Adams county.
On
December 18, 1912 he was united in marriage to Cora Preston. They were engaged
in farming until moving to Lenox in 1943.
He
was a, member of the Lenox United Methodist Church.
Preceding
him in death were his wife, Cora, an infant son, Ray Reldon,
his brother, Clyde Herbst and sisters, Mrs. Anna
Freeman, Mrs. Lula Cupp, and Mrs. Mildred Beck.
He
is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Leona and Leslie Richey and three
grandchildren, Jean, Connie and Jim, of Parkdale,
Oregon and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 10th at 2 p.m. from the United
Methodist Church with Rev. Floyd. Newbrough,
officiating.
Bearers
were Roy Beck, Dwain Boyer, Russell Gordon, Darrell Gordon, Norman Preston and
Clifford Preston.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Rose
Ellen Lesher, 86, of 2465 Pio Pico, Carlsbad, California, passed away October 30, 1971 in a convalescent home
in Vista, California.
Mrs. Lesher was born in Pennsylvania, but had lived in
California for the past fourteen years. She was employed as a housekeeper for
A. J. Alexander and son Cannon near Lenox for
18
years, leaving this vicinity about 1938. She had been a self employed
seamstress for 20 years in California.
She
was a member of the Carlsbad Union Church, the Rebekah Lodge of Carlsbad, the Oceanside Golden Age Club and the Golden Age Club of
Carlsbad.
When
living here she was very active in the Auxiliary.
Survivors
include three sons, William A. Lesher of Carlsbad,
Calif.; John A. Lesher of Olympia, Wash., and Robert
A. Lesher of San Diego, Calif,
one sister, Mrs. V. Edward Graham, Woodburn, Ore., eight grandchildren and ten
great grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances, eleven years ago.
Funeral
services were held at the Chalet Chapel of Memories in Oceanside, Calif. Nov.
2nd at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Neil Beery.

Leeman E. Nelson, 79, died Tuesday afternoon at the Lenox rest home after a long
illness.
The
service will be today (Thursday) at 2 pm at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev.

He
leaves his widow, Ethel, five sons, Lyle, Dale and Ronald of Lenox, George of
Conway, Marvin, Greene, Iowa, two daughters, Mrs. Betty Yount of Osceola, Mrs. Lela Duke, Oregon
City,
Ore., a brother, Everett Nelson of Lenox, 17 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren.
Five
brothers and two sisters preceded him in death, also 3 sons died in infancy.
Mr.
Nelson was born in Illinois and came to this area with his family when he was 2
years old. He lived 56 years on a fawn northeast of Lenox, then moved on an
acreage in 1950.

Funeral
services were held Thursday, Oct. 7th for Leeman Nelson, 79, who died at the Lenox Nursing Home Oct. 5th.
Leeman Elmo Nelson, son of Peter and Ida Belle Reynolds Nelson, was born at Farmer
City, Illinois on April 14, 1892, and died Tuesday, Oct. 5th, 1871 at the age
of 79 years, five
months
and 21 days at the local nursing home. He suffered a stroke one year ago and
had been seriously ill since July.
On
March 4, 1904 his family moved from Illinois to Iowa and homesteaded on a farm
4½ miles northeast of Lenox where he made his home for 56 years.
He
was married to Ethel Williams on May 3, 1921. To this union ten children were
born.
Surviving
include his wife, Ethel, five sons and two daughters, Lyle and wife Irene, Dale
and wife Helen, Ronald and wife Madelen of Lenox,
Marvin and wife Nan of Greene, Iowa,
and
George and wife Gertrude of Conway. Also Mrs. Paul (Lela) Duke of Oregon City,
Oregon and Mrs. Duane (Betty) Yount of Osceola, Iowa.
Fifteen grandchildren, two step grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and a
brother, Everett of Lenox, also mourn his passing.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters and three
sons.
Mr.
Nelson was a veteran of World War I and had a lifetime membership in Parkinson
Post No. 250, American Legion, of Lenox. He was a loving and devoted husband
and father, a good neighbor and friend of many who will mourn his passing.
He
and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May of this year.
Services
were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7th with
Rev. Don Briley, pastor of the Christian Church
officiating.
Bearers
were Joe Trost, Allen Pine, A. L. Nicholson, Joe Neuhardt, Roland Walter and Robert Rhoades.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Iowa Thursday October 14, 1971
Mrs.
Grace Walter, 83, who had been a patient in the Creston Greater Community
hospital a week, died Saturday, October 2nd. Death was due to a heart seizure.
Born
near Cumberland, Iowa, April 13, 1888, she was the last of the sons and
daughters of James and Lizzie Gutherie Henderson,
having lived in the Lenox area most of her 83 years.
The
father, mother and two younger sisters passed away, leaving Mrs. Walter and the
two older brothers, Lester and Ernest, who all went to make their home at
Tarkio, Mo. with
their
Uncle Milt Henderson and attended Tarkio College. She taught in the rural
schools near Lenox and for a time made her home with her brother, Lester, in
Idaho in 1912 where he was teaching.
Fifty-eight
years ago on Aug. 28, 1913, she was united in marriage to Ben Walter.
She
was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church and maintained her
interest and support of the work of the church. She also was a member of P.E.O.
and MFO club.
Mrs.
Walter led an active life and gave much time to the local library, helping with
its organization in 1941 and served on the Library Board for 27 years. Many
will remember her unselfish service as Librarian which helped her maintain an
interest in the young folks of the community.
She will
be greatly missed by her loving husband and brother Lester's daughters, Mrs.
Otto Stromsheian, (Charlotte), Mrs. Herb Steiner
(Joyce) and their families of California and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the United.
Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mrs. Roberta Lockhart.
Bearers
were Mike Cheese, Larry Walter, Vernon Walter, Mervin Walter, Richard Walter,
and Garland Walter.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Earl
Wilson, 63, of Omaha, Nebr., died in that city Sunday. He was born and raised
in Lenox, and graduated from the high school here. He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ora Wilson.
Survivors
include a son Dick of St. Paul, Minnesota, five grandchildren, two sisters, Mae
Benge of Long Beach, California and Mrs. Maude Hepperly of Clearfield and a
brother, Wayne Wilson of Council Bluffs.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, Sept. 8th at the Bender Funeral Home with Fr. Maslinski of St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating.
Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Fred Wurster, 87, died Tuesday evening at Rosary hospital.
He
was a retired farmer and had lived in this area all his life.

leaves his widow, Tura, two step sons, Melvin and Glen Williams of Lenox, and a
stepdaughter, Mrs. Bernice Brown of Clarinda.
