Ambrose, Frank -

Frank Ambrose, 94, died Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran Home for the Aged in Vinton.

Mr. Ambrose was born June 26, 1879, in Benton county. He was the son of William and Anna Westcoatt Ambrose and was the last of a family of five.

He had been in the tiling business and also farmed in the Lenox vicinity.

His wife, the former Edith Fisk, to whom he was married Dec, 20, 1909, died in 1949 An infant son also preceded him in death.

Survivors are three daughters Verda Austin of Elkhorn, Wis., Inez Van Arkel of Pella and Lela Teatsworth of Lenox, six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Larkin-Bender funeral home in Lenox with Rev. Richard Van Tyle officiating.

Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart.

Bearers were Harley Austin, Paul Lavin., Case Van Arkel, Homer Teatsworth, Richard Teatsworth. and Ray Boyer.

Burial was in the West Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Andrews, Hugh E -

Hugh E. Andrews, 81, died Monday, January 7, 1974 at 4 a.m. at Rosary hospital in Corning. Mr. Andrews was the son of John and Carrie (Elliott) Andrews.

He was born on a farm near Diagonal on October 25, 1898, and grew up in Lenox, graduating from the Lenox high school.

He became a member of the United Presbyterian Church at an early age.

He was married on April 5, 1915 to Stella Hunter. One son, Wilfred, was born to this union.

He was associated with the produce business in Lenox, Corning, Clarion and Eagle Grove. In 1970 he retired and moved back to Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Wilfred.

Surviving are his wife, Stella, daughter-in-law Norene, five grandchildren 2 great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Ivan (Mary) Carey, brothers-in-law,

sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender Funeral home in Lenox with the Rev Wallace Nelson, officiating.

Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart and Gwen Maynes.

Bearers were Kenneth McFee, Wayne McFee, Paul Davis, Lonnie Walter, Robert Lockhart and Guy Henderson.

Interment was in East Fairview cemetery.

Bugg, Mary Pearl Evans -

Mrs. Carl Cordell received word Friday of the dearth of her sister, Mrs. Albert Bugg of Kansas City, Mo.

She will be remembered here as Pearl Evans and for several years taught school in the Sharpsburg and Gravity areas.

Survivors include her husband and one adopted daughter, Mrs. Helen Nance of Raytown, Mo.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in Kansas City.

Bugg, Mary Pearl Evans -

Mary Pearl, oldest child of Benjamin Franklin and Sarah Annie Briggs Evans was born at Gravity, Iowa Dec. 22, 1891, and passed away Jan. 4, 1974 in Kansas City, Mo., following a stroke Dec. 29, 1973.

When a young girl she taught school. In May of 1912 she was married to Albert Bugg who survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Helen and son-in-law Edwin Nance and granddaughter Pamela, who lives at Raytown, Mo. She also leaves seven sisters, Sylvia Peterman of Clarinda, Grace Gibson of Greenfield, Iowa, Hazel Lister of  Eureka, Mo., Dimple Salter of Huntington. Park, California, Crystal Matheny and Nettie Cordell of Lenox and Darlene Brown of Spokane, Washington, as well as two brothers, Dewey Evans of Lenox and Cash Evans of Gravity.

She was  preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Myrtle Flancher of Santa Maria, California  Sept. 18, 1968.

Carter, Bertha I Boltinghouse -

Bertha I. Carter, daughter of Lewis C and Sarah Freeman Boltinghouse, was born Sept 27, 1878 near Edgington, Ill. and passed away Dec 12. 1973 at Redondo Beach, California at the age of 95 years.

At the age of 6 months she came to a new home in Grove Township, Taylor County, Ia., residing there on a farm where she attend rural school.  She then attended Normal School and Western Normal College in Shenandoah, then taught rural schools in Taylor County.

On March 26, 1902, she and Claude E. Carter were married, established their new home near Sharpsburg on a farm.  To this union were born two children, L Wayne Carter, presently residing in Redondo Beach and Francis Bernita, who departed this life as a child.  Claude preceded her in death in 1959.  Bertha accepted her Lord in her youth at the Blue Grove Church of Christ in Grove Township, where she was active in all facets of community life until she with Claude moved to Lenox for a span of ten years, where they were interested in a business venture.

In 1931 Claude and Bertha, desiring to return to their old home community, moved to the old farm home near Sharpsburg.  After his death, she lived part time with her sister, Ethel Bryant and Glenn in Des Moines, placing membership at West Side Church of Christ.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Wayne of Redondo Beach, Calif., and two grandchildren, Patty Pollom and husband and family of Olympia, Wash., and Wayne C Carter jr., wife, Donna and two children of San Jose, Cal., two sisters, Eva Armstrong of Lenox and Ethel Bryant of Des Moines, also nieces and nephews located in several areas of the nation.

Haynes, Ethel May Matzen -

Mrs Randall Haynes, 64, died Thursday, December 20th, after a lingering illness at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

Ethel May Haynes, daughter of Fred and Huldah Matzen, was born Nov 29, 1909 in Taylor county, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Randall Haynes May 28, 1937.  To this union were born five children.

Surviving her are her husband, four children, Red of Lenox, Marcia Bolinger, Margaret Bolinger and Janice Bladon all of Creston, 4 sons-in-law, one son-in-law, 16 grandchildren and one great grandchildren, one sister, Florence Heaps and husband of Corning, one niece, Virginia Heaps Sparks of Union, Iowa and one aunt, Mrs Ruth Moore of Lenox.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one daughter, Doris Haynes Moore and one grandson.

At an early age she joined the Presbyterian church, and later transferred her membership to the Lenox Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at the Bender Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, Dec 22nd at 2 pm with Rev Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Bearers were Don Trost, Max Badgett, Homer Pugh, Everett Symonds, Raymond Trost and Herman Haering.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

House, Francis Eugene -

Final rites were held for Francis E. House, Lenox resident, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox Wednesday, January 2nd at 10:30 pm.

Francis Eugene House, only child of Fred and Ruth Woodard House, was born November 21, 1926 near Clearfield, Iowa, and passed away suddenly Dec.

29, 1973 while working in the Lenox business district.

He attended the Clearfield schools until his freshman year and completed his high school education at Lenox, graduating in 1944.

Upon graduation, he entered the U. S. Navy, serving until August of 1946; After discharge he worked as manager of the Lenox Pool Hall for three years.

On August 18, 1947 he married Juanita Calvin and to this union were born a daughter, Deborah Ann and a son, Stephen Eugene.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita, daughter, Mrs. Skip (Debbie) Deacon of Creston, one son, Stephen Eugene, who attends school in Des Moines, a son-in-law,

Aaron (Skip) Deacon, a granddaughter, Kori Ann, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred House, mother-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Calvin, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law,

nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Father Patrick Bacon of the Immaculate Conception Church of Creston officiated at the services.  Music was furnished by Mrs. James Hughes on the organ.

Bearers were Ronnie Fulk, Howard Elder, Bill! Sawyer, Lloyd Cameron, Jack Jones and Orville Williams.

Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lenox.

Lillie, Audra Alice Newton -

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Audra Lillie, who died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Saturday.

Audra Alice Lillie, a daughter  of William and Nancy Jane Newton, was born in Harrison county, Mo. on July 27, 1896.

She was married to James Lillie on December 15, 1912. Mrs. Lillie is survived by two sons, Harold  of Fremont, Nebraska, and Earle of Lenox, one daughter,

Mrs. Duke (Thelma)  Donaldson of Corning, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A brother Lee Newton and one sister, Delsa Hamilton: both of Gillette, Wyoming, also mourn her loss. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, one daughter, Josephine, and three grandchildren, Donna Rae, Jimmie D and Scott.

Mrs. Lillie united with the church at an early age and remained a faithful member until her death. She was a member of Rebekab Lodge. Mrs. Lillie will be sadly missed by a host of friends.

Lundsberg, Virginia Peltier -

Mrs. Robert W (Virginia) Lundsberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Peltier, died Tuesday, January 22nd in Skokie, Illinois after an extended illness.

Surviving are her husband, Robert, son John S. Rice, Jr., and wife Judy, son Kelton W. Lundsberg and two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica Rice.

Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. C. F. Peltier and two sisters, Mrs C. E. Wainwright of Syracuse, Kansas and Mrs. C. J. Palmer of Chariton, la.

Preceding her in death were one son, Richard K. Lundsberg, her father, C. F. Peltier and a brother, Kenneth Peltier.

May, Orva Samuel -

Orva Samuel May, son of John and Martha Cruth May, died at a Clarinda, Iowa nursing home January 26, 1974.  He was born at Elmo, Missouri February 21, 1895 and lacked one month of being 79 years of age.

Mr. May farmed near Tarkio, Missouri until 40 years ago when he came to Lenox and continued farming here as long as he was able. He was very interested in soil conservation and good farm management. He lived in Omaha a short time with his niece, Amceal Revenaugh but came back to the farm for the last 3 years.

Five weeks ago he was entered in the Clarinda hospital and from there to a nursing home for the final 3 weeks of his life.

He is survived  by 8 nieces and nephews, neighbors, and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home, Lenox Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal, pianist and Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck, vocalists.

Bearers were Leland Wurster, Raymond Brown, Roy Martin, John Cade, Don Tully and1 Glenn Williams.

Interment was in the Prairie Hill cemetery at Tarkio, Mo.

Porter, Gladys Miller -

Mrs. Gladys Porter, 51, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Douglas County Hospital in Omaha. Death was caused by cancer. Her home was in Glenwood, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband,  children, grandchildren, her parent, Mr and Mrs Ralph Miller of Lenox, three sisters, Mrs. Lyle Nelson and Mrs. Don Miller of Lenox and Mrs. Marilyn Dailey of Des Moines and a brother, Francis Miller also of Des Moines.

Services are pending.

Funeral services for Gladys Porter were held at the Peterson Mortuary on Friday, March 1, 1974 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey G. Quandt officiating.

Burial was in the Glenwood cemetery.

Organist was Mrs. Dean Dusenberry. Casket bearers were Barry Beard, Marvin Konfrst, Mike Konfrst, Fred Konfrst, Don Miller and Lyle Nelson.

She was born in Union County, Iowa, on April 6, 1922, the daughter of Ralph and Elsie Miller. She graduated from the Prescott high school in 1942.

She was united in marriage with Maurice Porter in Maryville, Mo. on May 15, 1943. Following a lengthy illness she passed away Feb. 27, 1974 at an Omaha hospital.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Joyce) Konfrst of Glenwood, Mrs. William (Shirley) Coons of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Lloyd (Carol) Erwin of Pacific Junction, 4 sons, Kenneth of Council Bluffs, Larry of Glenwood, Wayne and Darrell of Pacific Junction, three sisters Mrs. Lyle (Irene) Nelson and Mrs. Don (Jean) Miller of Lenox and Mrs. James (Marilyn) Dailey of Des Moines, a brother, Francis Miller of Des Moines, 7 grandchildren and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller of Lenox.

A sister, Margaret Kilgore preceded her in death.

Roll, Andrew Lavern -

Andrew Lavern Roll, longtime resident of Lenox, died Sunday, Dec 30th, 1973 at the age of 72.

Mr Roll, son of Andrew M and Myrtle Alexander Roll, was born in Red Oak, Iowa, November 7, 1901.  He moved to the Lenox area at the age of four, to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs E C Higgins, after the death of his mother.

He was united in marriage to Vera Tully December 28, 1927.  One son, James, was born to this union.

As a young man Mr Roll farmed near Lenox for several years prior to opening an oil business which he operated from 1936 until the end of 1972.

He joined the Christian Church at an early age, later transferring his membership to the United Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and as Financial secretary.

Mr. Roll was active in community affairs as a former member of the town council and Municipal Water and Light Board.  He was also a Past Master of Tremont Lodge No. 343 A.F.&A.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle, his brother Harold and a half-sister Mae Wallin.

He is survived by his wife, Vera, his son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs James Roll of Vienna, Virginia, and two granddaughters, Linda and Laura. A host of friends in the area made throughout his long years as a member of this community, also mourn his passing.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm from the United Presbyterian Church with Rev Wallace Nelson officiating.

Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart and Gwen Maynes.

Bearers were Marvin Reed, Walter Brokaw, Don Trost, Raymond Trost, Randall Trost and Eldon Jones.

Business houses of Lenox were closed during the services.

Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery.

Sanders, Bertie Belle -

Miss Bertie Sanders, 86, died Friday, Dec. 28th at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M. Monday, Dec. 31st at the Keating-MaKasson funeral home in Creston. Rev. Lester Pearson, pastor of the First

Christian Church conducted the service.

Music was by Mrs. Harold Symonds, organist, who played "In the Garden" and "The Odd Rugged Cross".

Casket bearers were Clarence Christensen, Fred Konecne, Bill Weisshaar, Clifford Weisshaar, Herman Weisshaar and Rudolph Weisshaar.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Bertie Belle Sanders was born at Maiderville, W. Va., Oct. 30, 1887. She was the daughter of William J. and Lucy Tapp Sanders. She had never married.

She came to Iowa with her family when a small child and lived near Kent, Iowa, until 1907 when the family moved to Lenox. In 1955 she moved to Creston where she made her home as long as her health permitted. She came to the Lenox Nursing Home in 1969. She was a member of First Christian Church in Lenox, later transferring her membership to the Creston Church.

Miss Sanders is survived by a niece, Mrs. Ed (Ruby) Hoppee of Crivitz, Wisc., and nephews Roy Worthington of St. Louis, Glen Worthingbon of California, Gene Worthington of Chicago, William D. Sanders of Des Moines and Rudolph Weisshaar of Creston.

Walston, Cora May Weese -

Cora May Walston, daughter of Edwards and Elsie Weese, was born January 21, 1892, on a farm near Sheridan, Missouri, and departed this life January 13, 1974, at the Lenox Care Center, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 22 days.

She became a member of the Isadora, Missouri, Christian Church at an early age.

She was united to marriage to Thomaa Walter Walston on Feb. 2, 1910, at the home of the bride's parents. To this union 11 children were born.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, two sisters, two infant daughters, Cora Sue and Pearl Mae, a son Donald at the age of 27 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Thomas W. Walston, one brother, Noble Weese of Maloy, Iowa and her children: Hazel Hoover of Coon Rapids; Vane of Bedford, Nina Rice of Stone, Ohio, Elsie Preston of Lenox, Iowa, Gerald of New Ulm, Minn., Elvin of Kansas City, Co.; Marvin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Verle of Sharpsburg, Iowa.  Four daughters-in-law, Thelma, Janet, Marjorie and Mary Walston, 3 sons-in-law, Ralph Hoover, Delbert Rice and Clifford Preston, 26 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

She and her husband celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last year. She had lived the most of her married life in Ringgold and Taylor counties and the past 18 years in the  Sharpsburg, Iowa community. She was a kind and loving mother, wife and sister as she devoted most of her life to her family.

Pallbearers were John Walston, Robert Walston, Glen Walston, Charles Preston, Don Walston and Mike Walston.

Wilson, Bert R -

Funeral services for Bert R. Wilson, 88, were held at the Nelson Boylan funeral home in Red Oak Monday, Jan. 20th. Rev. Dale Wildemer officiated.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Mr. Wilson was born in Greenfield, the son, of Frank and Bessie Wilson. He was married to Mamie Jordan and they lived most of their married life in Shenandoah and Red Oak.

He had been very ill and living at the rest home for some time.  A memorial fund has been  established for the new rest home in Red Oak.

Two brothers Gerald and Dick and two sisters, Mabel Rupe and Nelle Butler preceded him in death.

A brother, Fred Wilson of Lake Crystal, Minn., and a sister  Bertha Maharry of Lenox, nieces and nephews survive.

Wurster, Mary E Lee -

Mary E. Wurster, 85, died Saturday, January 26th at the Rosary hospital in Corning where she had been taken that day.

Mary E. Lee Wurster, daughter of Fillmore and Cynthia Lee was born January 22, 1889 on a farm near Lenox.

She became a Christian at Prairie Chapel at an early age.

She was united in marriage to John F. Wurster on November 25, 1913. To this union five children were born.

Preceding her to death were her parents, one brother, two sisters and one grandson.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dorothy Crisp of Mundeline, Ill,, Clifford of Lenox, Minnie Ashman of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Russell of Lenox and Ruth  Reynolds of Lenox.  Three sons-in-law Vernie, George and Bill, two daughters-in-1aw, Mary and Irene, along with 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter, 5 step grandchildren, 10 step-great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends survive.

She had lived all her life to Taylor County.

She was a kind, loving and thoughtful mother and devoted most of her life to her family.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist church officiating.

Bearers were Donald Pfander, Donald Bunn, Bob Reynolds, Clarence Haering, Clarence Olson and Dick Walters.

Burial was in West Fairview cemetery.
