Ambrose, Elmer -
Elmer
Ambrose, son of Lewis and Anna Preston Ambrose, was born in Taylor Co., Iowa,
Feb. 18, 1885, and departed this life at Afton Sept. 7, 1961, at the age of 76
years.
Mr.
Ambrose, who had never married, was a farmer and lived in Taylor Co. until
moving to Union Co. in 1920. He had lived in Creston and Afton communities
since that time.
He
was a member of the First Methodist Church in Creston.
Surviving
relatives are a brother, Clarence Ambrose of Lenox, 3 nieces and 3 nephews, Mrs John Jackson, Lyle Ambrose, Mrs Edward Bittner, Russell Ambrose, Mrs Richard Riedel and
Eldon Ambrose; several other relatives and a host of friends. His father died
35 years ago and his mother, 33 years ago.

Hattie Bladon, 77, died Saturday at the Nursing Home in Clearfield
following a lengthy illness.
Funeral
services were Tuesday at the Clearfield Presbyterian church. Burial was in
Grove Chapel cemetery. She had lived on a farm near Clearfield for many years.

Norris
Bunn, 67, former Lenox marshal, died Thursday morning, Aug 10 at the Veterans'
Hospital in Des Moines. He had been hospitalized at Creston for a time after
his hip was broken and later taken to the V A Hospital. The cast had been
removed from his leg Tuesday.
He
was a veteran of World War I and was an active Legionnaire.
Survivors:
His widow, Carrie of Lenox; and one son, Donald, of Des Moines. The funeral was
Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church, the Rev Clements officiating.
Obituary -
Norris
William, the son of Abner and Sarah Bunn, was born at LaMoille, Ill. July 24, 1894. He died Aug 10, 1961 at
the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 67 years, 17 days.
He
came to Iowa with his parents in 1903 and they settled near Kent, la. Here he
lived until his service in U. S. Army in World War I. He served in France with
the 88th Division. After his discharge he returned to Kent.
He
was married to Carrie Trost March 21, 1922 at
Creston, la. To this union a son Donald was born.
Mr Bunn lived all his life in the Kent-Lenox vicinity except for 7 years in
Minnesota.
He
joined the Methodist Church at Kent, then transferred his membership to the
church in Lenox. He belonged to the Lenox Post of the American Legion.
He
was well known as the city marshal at Lenox for 23 years. He retired 2 years
ago but continued as relief officer one night a week until his injury.
He
was preceded in death by his father and mother, two sisters Mrs Ethel Russell and Mrs Helen Pennisten,
and a brother Eugene.
Those
left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife , Carrie, his son Donald, his
sisters Mrs Charity Bowman of Cameron, Mo., Mrs Jennie Russell of Cameron, Mo., and Mrs Ruth Simpson of Monmouth, Ill., his brothers, John of Austin, Minn., Clinton of
Conrad, la., Dale of Mountain Home, Ark., and Glen of Kalamazoo, Mich., and a
host of other relatives and friends.
Services
were Saturday at the Methodist church, the Rev Clements officiating, with
burial at Lenox.

John
Camden, 80, died at a Bedford Rest home Tuesday afternoon. He was retired after
having worked on the Burlington section for 27 years. He had lived with his
children 9 years before going to the rest home.
Services
were Friday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
His
wife preceded him in death. Survivors: 5 sons, W W of
Grafton, Ill.; Monroe of Long Lane, Mo.;
Ben of Lawrence, Kan.; Raymond of Peoria, Ill.; Roy of Lenox; 23 grandchildren and
31 great grandchildren.
John
B. Camden, son of Geo. Camden, was born in Dent County, Mo., Sept 7, 1879 and
passed away at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford, Aug 8, 19S1 at the age of
81 years, 11 months and 1 day.
He
was united in marriage in 1900 to Bitha J Barton. To
this union were born 2 daughters, Alice and Bessie and, 5 sons, William,
Monroe, Roy, Ben and Raymond.
Preceding
him in death were his wife and 2 daughters and his survivors include 5 sons, 22
grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 1 brother and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral
services were held Friday, Aug 11, 1961 at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Rev
James Eddy was in charge of the services.

Charles
Cornelius Cason, son of John William and Luna Mae Hughes Cason was born Nov. 5,
1912 near Leola, Ark., and passed from this life in the St Joseph Memorial
Hospital in Omaha, Neb., Sept 16, 1961, at the age of 48 years, 10 months and
11 days.
His
boyhood days were spent on a farm in Arkansas. In 1932 Charles confessed his faith
in Christ as his Saviour and united with the Manning
Baptist church. He demonstrated and testified of his faith in Christ until the
very last.
On
March 8 he was united in marriage to Letha May Safley in Princeton, Ark. To this union were born the following children: Charles Jr.,
who passed away in 1956; John, of Cedarville, Mich.; Irma, Dwayne, James,
Nancy, Christine, and Frank, all at home; a daughter-in-law, Judy and a
granddaughter, Joy, of Cedarville. Also his mother, Luna Cason of Camden, Ark.,
three sisters: Virginia Hudson of Camden; Mildred Gurnsey,
of Hampton, Ark.; Ernestine Monken of St Joseph, Mo.;
two brothers: John of Camden, Ark.; and George of Sheridan, Ark. The above with
his wife survive him with the exception of the son, Charles Jr.
Others
near to him who have preceded him in death are his father in 1950; a sister
Christine in 1933 and a sister Everlean Anders who
was buried just 3 weeks prior to Charles' death.
He
leaves many other relatives and surely a host of very dear friends.
The
family moved to the present home in Taylor county near Conway Feb 17, 1949,
where he became a real part of the community. Many of those who have been his
neighbors for these years tell of the many, many fine things of his life and it
is with aching hearts that they think of his passing from their midst. He
always had the time to listen to his many small friends when they came to him
with their problems.
He
was an active member of the Clearfield Christian church and the Sunday school
there. He was also a booster for many other worthwhile things of the community
in which he lived.
Charles
Cason will truly be remembered as a loving husband and father, a kind and
gracious friend and neighbor.
Services
were Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Clearfield Christian church, the Rev Paul Breymer of Cedarville, Mich. Burial was at Conway.

The
funeral of Clara Cresswell, 81, is being held
Wednesday at the Bender Funeral home with burial here. Mrs Cresswell lived near Lenox until 1945, when her
husband, Byron, died and she moved to Creston. She died Sunday.
She
was the daughter of John Madden. Her last living relative in Lenox was a
sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Madden.

Cresswell,
Clara Madden -
Clara
Madden Cresswell, the daughter of John and Leanora Bliss Madden, was born in Lenox, la., Sept 6, 1880
and passed away at the Cochran Nursing Home in Creston July 30, 1961 at the age
of 80 years, 10 months and 24 days.
On
July 18, 1900 she was united in marriage to Byron C Cresswell at the home of her parents. To this union was born a daughter who died in
infancy.
She
was the last member of her immediate family being preceded in death by her
husband, daughter, parents, two brothers and five sisters.
She
is survived by nieces, nephews and a number of cousins in addition to loving
friends.
She
lived in the Lenox vicinity until after the death of her husband in 1945. Since
that time she has made her home in Creston.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, Aug 2, 1961 at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox.
The Rev A J Clements was in charge. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs.
Ethel Goodale, 74, of Ames, died Aug. 3. Funeral services were at Ames Saturday Aug 5
with burial at Dawson, Ia. Her husband,
Frank, died July 19 of this year.
Survivors
include a son, Eugene and two grandchildren, Robert and Jean of Lenox, one
sister, Mrs Wm McCory of
Dawson, who is the last of six sisters.
Mrs Goodale was a
sister-in-law of Retta Goodale and Mrs Lew Copeland. The Copelands, Retta Goodale and Eugene Goodale attended the funeral.

Roxa Viola Key, daughter and eldest child of Achiles and
Sarah Key, was born near Sharpsburg, la., Aug 13, 1902 and passed away at
Glenwood State School Aug 26, 1961 at the age of 59 years and 13 days. She had
lived in the Sharpsburg vicinity until 1942 when she entered the school.
She
was preceded in death by her father, 6 half brothers, 3 half sisters, 2
brothers and 3 sisters and is survived by her mother, Mrs Sarah Key, 4 sisters, Mrs Russell (Lydia) Reynolds of
Clarinda; Mrs Asa (Hattie)
Tackett of Gravity, Mrs James, (Eunice) Eller and Mrs Bill (Mary) Terry of Lenox, a brother, Lloyd Key of Blockton and a half brother, Oscar Key of Fiske,
Saskatchewan, Canada and many other relatives and friends.
Graveside
services were Aug. 29 at Blue Grove cemetery, the Rev Robert Duckett officiating.

Ike
Lucas died Friday afternoon at his farm home west of Lenox. He had spent most
of his life in Taylor and Adams counties. Services were at Benders Sunday
afternoon with military rites by the American Legion.
OBITUARY
Isaac
Lucas, son of Tipton and Minerva Hunt Lucas was born in Taylor county, Oct 6,
1882 and departed this life at his home Sept 8, 1961 at the age of 78 years, 11
months and 2 days.
Most
of his life was spent in Adams and Taylor counties except one year in South
Dakota and four years in the Army.
On
Aug. 8, 1906 he was married to Isabel Harrison and to this union 4 children
were born. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jessie, one
sister, Lura Scott, and one grandson, David Pepper.
He
is survived by his wife Isabel, three daughters, Nellie (Mrs Homer O'Connell of Corning) Mae (Mrs Porter Hunter of
Corning) Crissie (Mrs Howard Pepper of Lenox) and one son and daughter-in-law, Tip and Loleta Lucas of Lenox, one sister, Mrs Nellie Cain of Corning, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
Ike
as he was known by his friends, will long be remembered for his interest in
gardening and flowers. He spent many hours working with his flowers and
vegetables, which he enjoyed sharing with relatives and friends. Today as we
travel down memory lane, we shall each pick heart ease and forget-me-nots from
his flower garden of love.
Services
were held at the Bender Funeral Home Sept 10, with the Rev. Donald Briley officiating. Pall bearers were Reldon Ambrose, Clyde Shellman, Clarence Olson, Orville Rogers, Roy Martin and
Earl Lillie. Music was by Marcia Bender and Rolland Buxton. Burial at Lenox with
military rites in charge of Parkinson Post No. 250 of Lenox.

Martha
Ellen, daughter of William and Mary Jane Cruth, was
born May 5, 1871 at Princeton, Mo. She died at the Clarinda Hospital Aug 8,
1961 at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 3 days.
She
was married to John W May on Sept 3, 1888. To this union 4 children were born,
three sons, Lester L., Orva and Lloyd P. and a
daughter, Cleo Belle.
She
was a life long member of the Baptist church. She was
baptized early in life and joined the Bethel church at Elmo, Mo.
She
was preceded in death by her husband John on March 1, 1900, her daughter Cleo
Belle, Jan. 12, 1932, her son Lester L. on Aug. 21, 1939 and her son Lloyd P.
on June 20, 1959.
She
leaves to cherish her son Orva, 8 grandchildren, 22 great
grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Services
were at the Bender Funeral Home Aug 8, the Rev. Clements officiating. Burial at Tarkio, Mo.

Mrs Bill McDole, 21, the former Sherri Johnson of Lenox died
Wednesday, Sept 20 at her home in California. She had suffered from lukemia. Funeral and burial were at Cozad, Nebr, Sunday afternoon.
Survivors:
her husband, her father and stepmother, Mr and Mrs Alva Johnson of Freeman, S Dak;
1 sister, Mrs Paul Gray, in Iowa; 1 brother, Duane in
the service; 2 step sisters, Mrs Virginia Roe of
Council Bluffs and Miss Peggy Cox of San Francisco, Calif;
and 1 step brother, John Cox of Texas.

Clyde Ouderkirk, 68 years old, of Sharpsburg died Wednesday
at Iowa City. Services were Friday, Aug. 4 at the Presbyterian church at
Sharpsburg, the Rev Clements officiating. Burial was at Lenox.
Survivors
include his widow, Nell and a sister, Mrs Elmer Sanders
of Redding.
William
Clyde Ouderkirk was born April 24, 1893 and died at the
University Hospital at Iowa City, la., Aug 2, 1961 at the age of 68 years, 3 months
and 8 days. His father died in 1895, leaving his wife and family of children,
the eldest 14 and the youngest, Clyde, 2 years old. He was the only son of John
P and Mary Lepley Ouderkirk.
By
hard work the home was maintained 1-1/2 miles north of Sharpsburg and
the children grew up there. They were all raised in the Presbyterian church
which he joined in his youth.
He
was married to Nellie Farnham Feb 1, 1917 and they established
their home on the family farm which has been his home all his life.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and 3 sisters, Mrs Flora
Reed, Mrs Eula McConoughey and Mrs Eden Mayland.
Those
surviving him are his wife Nellie, his sisters, Mrs Emma Sanders of Redding, la., and Mrs Gertie Wilcoxson of Cameron, Mo.,
three nieces and 2 nephews and many friends who mourn his passing.
Funeral
services were at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church Aug 4 with burial at Lenox.
The Rev A J Clements officiated at the service.

Funeral
services were at St Patrick's church at 9:30 a. m. Tuesday for S. L. (Lafe) Paymal, 90, of Omaha. He
died Saturday at a hospital in Omaha. He
had made his home in Omaha since moving from Lenox. Father Adam Reisz officiated at the services. Rosary was said at the
Bender Funeral Home Monday evening at 8:00. Burial in St Patrick's cemetery.
Survivors:
His wife Myrtle; 3 sons: 1 daughter and a number of grandchildren; Mrs Frank Paymal, a sister-in-law, lives in Lenox, also a nephew,
Gene Paymal.

John Schoenhair, 89, died Tuesday afternoon at the Lenox Rest
home. Services will be Thursday at 2 p m at the Bender Funeral home, the Rev
James Eddy officiating. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.
Mr Schoenhair was born in Dittenburg,
Germany, and came to this country at the age of nine years.
He
leaves his widow, Barbara, three daughters, Mrs Marie Traves and Mrs Dora Harper,
both of Imperial, Nebr, and Mrs Irene Wall, Clearfield; five sons, John, Lenox, Harry, Creston; Clarence,
Omaha; Fred, Bedford; and Raymond, Sharpsburg; 6 grandchildren and a number of
great grandchildren; also one brother, Charles of Creston.

Schoenhair,
John -
John Schoenhair, son of Conrad and Barbara Schoenhair, was born in Dittenburg,
German Dec. 24, 1871. He departed his life at Lenox Nursing home at the age of
89 years, 8 months, 19 days, on Sept 12, 1961.
On
Feb. 15, 1900 he was united in marriage to Barbara Rath,
and they established their home near Lenox. To this union were born eight
children. His father and mother and two sisters preceded him in death.
Surviving
are his wife Barbara; John of Lenox; Harry of Creston; Marie (Mrs. Dewey Traves) of Imperial, Neb.; Dora (Mrs James Harper) Imperial; Clarence of Omaha; Fred of Bedford; Raymond of
Sharpsburg; Irene (Mrs Otis Wall) Clearfield, seven
grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one brother Charles of Creston and other
relatives and friends.
He
came to America with his family when he was 9 years old and became a citizen of
the U. S. Oct 17, 1896. He has been a resident of Taylor county for 61 years.
He retired from farming, and moved to Lenox in 1950.
The
funeral was at Bender's Sept 14, the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial was in
the Lenox cemetery.

Gayland Stephens, 46, of Diagonal died of a heart attack Tuesday morning. Surviving are
his widow, Mayme, 2 daughters, Mrs Marion Price, Des Moines and Patty of the home, 1 granddaughter. Services will
be at the Methodist Church in Diagonal Friday at 2 pm.

Mrs Maud Weller, 69, of Sharpsburg died at Rosary hospital early Friday after being run over
by her own car Thursday evening.
The
accident happened in the driveway at the Belle Phalen home in Sharpsburg. The two ladies had been at the Len Grimm home for supper. Mrs Weller took Mrs Phalen home and was planning to spend the night with her. Mrs Phalen went ahead into the
house to turn on the lights. Evidently, as Mrs Weller
got out of the car, it rolled backward and the open door caused her to fall
beneath the wheel.
She
had spent the last five winters with her sister-in-law, Mrs Gertie Weller in Lenox and was planning to come again
this winter.
Her
husband died in 1937. She leaves two sons, Dean and Howard of Sharpsburg; one
daughter, Mary Ellen Lewellen of Malvern; 4 sisters Mrs Ila Smith of Sharpsburg, Mrs Jessie Rice, Mrs Oma Eno and Mrs Elva Knott, all of Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers, Bertie Knott of Texas and
Charles Knott of Sharpsburg.
Funeral
services were at the Methodist church at Sharpsburg with burial at Gravity.

Weller,
Maude Ellen Knott -
Maude
Ellen, daughter of Mary Ellen and William Isaac Knott, was born at Sharpsburg,
la., June 21, 1892 and passed away at the Rosary hospital at Corning Sept 1,
1961, at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 11 days.
Maude
grew to womanhood in the Sharpsburg community and lived in Taylor county all
her life. On April 29, 1920, she was united in marriage to William Weller of
Gravity. To this union were born two sons and one daughter.
She
was a member of the Methodist church where she was a faithful worker, taking
part in the different organizations.
She
was preceded in death by her husband on April 3, 1937. Also her mother and
father and one sister, Viola.
She
leaves to mourn her departure her children: William Dean Weller, Howard Edward
Weller of Sharpsburg and Mary Ellen Lewellen of
Malvern; 10 grandchildren, Karen and Ronald Weller, William, Bonnie and Nancy
Weller, Larry, Connie, Joy, Debbie and Vickie Lewellen.
Two
brothers, Bert Knott of McAllen, Tex., and Charles Knott of Sharpsburg. Four
sisters: Elva Knott, Jessie Rice, Oma Eno, all of Lincoln, Neb., and Ila Smith of Sharpsburg, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
After
the death of her husband, she moved to Sharpsburg.
She
lived with her mother until her mother passed away, in later years she has been
a companion for her sister-in-law, Mrs Gertie Weller of Lenox.
Maude
was a kind and loving mother and a friend to everyone.
Although
she was handicapped she was always ready to give a helping hand wherever it was
needed. She will be greatly missed in the community.
