Abernathy, Lora Proctor -

Lora P. Abernathy, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Hawk Proctor, was born at Ravenwood, Missouri, on May 27, 1894 and passed away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa on

December 31, 1977 at the age of 83 years, seven months and four days.

She was married to Fred Abernathy at Lenox, Iowa on May 14, 1925. He preceded her in death August 17, 1953. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mrs.

Mary Turner and two brothers, Charles Proctor and Eddie Proctor, who died in infancy.

Lora was a graduate nurse of the Missouri Methodist Nursing School in St. Joseph, Mo. and was employed by Dr. Robert Forgraves there for several years before moving to Lenox.

For many, many years, Lora worked and served in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

She was also a member of the Lenox United Methodist church.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews and by her friends.

Services were conducted Tues., Jan. 3 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Floyd Newbrough, Pastor, Lenox United Methodist church officiated. Music was by Norma Paymal.

Casket bearers were Sanford Turner, Turner Lett, Herbert Treese, Bill Rybolt, William Turner and Steve Turner. Burial was in East Fairview cemetery, Lenox.

Baker, Steven R -

Steven R. Baker drowned last Friday afternoon in the east lake of the Lenox Reservoir. The accident occurred while Baker and another man, Doug Larson, were working in a boat

on a pipe coupling used in the dredging operation at the lake.

The coupling broke and flooded the boat, which forced Baker and Larson to swim to safety. Larson swam for shore while Baker headed back to the dredging platform some 100 yards away. Baker got into trouble near the platform and sank in the water.

The Lenox Fire Department rescue squad was called and divers were summoned from Corning. Divers recovered the body later in the day.

Funeral services were held at the Larkin Bender Funeral Home in Lenox on Monday.

Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Baker of Lenox; two sisters, Christine and Jeanie, both at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith

of Lenox and Mrs. Dorothy Baker of Garden Grove, California.

Beck, Roger -

Roger Beck, 34, died at his home in Rosemont, Minn., October 28.

He was the son of the late Charles Beck and Mrs. Helen Beck of Creston.

The funeral was October 31 at the Christian church in Creston with burial in the Lenox cemetery.

He was a nephew of Lena Welch, Sylvia Beck, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Beck.

Bradley, Annette -

Annette Bradley, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Bradley, of 5766 Avondale Rd., Pensacola, Fla., was killed Saturday night, Oct. 29, after falling from a hayrack during a hayride.

She is survived by her parents and three younger brothers, Scott, Mark and Tony. Among a host of relatives and friends, survivors also include her grandparents, Mr.

and Mrs. Hubert Bradley, Sr. of Kent and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Roeder of Afton and great-grandparents, Mrs. Frances Shiffer of Kent and Mrs. Anna Roeder of Afton.

Bryant, Glenn LeRoy -

Glenn L. Bryant, 85, died at his home in Des Moines Nov. 16. Two services were held, the first at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, Bob Scott, minister of the West Side Church of Christ officiating.

A service was held at 2 p.m. at the Christian church in Lenox with the local minister Jack Cutbirth assisting.

Harley A. Porter was organist and Mildred Walter soloist.

Casketbearers were Robert Bryant, Roland Boltinghouse, Gail Boltinghouse, Cleo Boltinghouse, Kenneth Boltinghouse and Hal Pierce. Interment was in West Fairview cemetery, Lenox.

Mr. Bryant spent most of his early life in this community. He also lived in Creston before moving to Des Moines. He was known as a good businessman, but impressed his friends most with his dedication to the work of the church.

Glenn LeRoy Bryant, son of Grant A. Bryant and Clara E. Bryant, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1892, and graduated to the heavenly home for which he had prepared on Nov. 16, 1977.

With the exception of a few years in North Dakota, he spent most of his early life in and around Lenox, Iowa.

While in North Dakota he was baptized into Christ and began his Christian walk in the Ellendale Christian church. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful fellowship with the Lord that was to be his strength for the rest of his life.

On June 19, 1912 he was united in marriage to Ethel Grace Boltinghouse at the home of her parents in Lenox. To this union one son, W. Ernest, was born.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Ethel, his son, W. Ernest, his daughter-in-law, Wilma, two granddaughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. John Schneller and Mr. and Mrs. George McJimsey, three great-granddaughters, Jill and Jane Schneller and Anne McJimsey. There are also many other relatives and friends who loved him and felt that they could call upon him for a helping hand.

His love for the Lord, his home and family were his life.

DeWald, Ed -

Word has been received last week of the death of Ed De Wald of Houston, Tex. He was a brother-in-law of Ruth Hofler and Fern Hale as he married a sister Hazel Page. They had one daughter Patty and four daughters who live in Iran.  His body as requested, was donated to medical science and then later cremated.

Gripp, Grace -

Grace Gripp, 94, died on Thursday at Crest Haven Care Center in Creston.

Survivors include Mr. and Mrs. Allen Pine, Mrs. Lucille Maharry and Fred, Grady, & Sandra Harris and husband Dan.

Services were held at Pleasant Valley Saturday afternoon at 1:30 south of Thayer.

Burial was in Hopeville cemetery.

Hartley, Angie -

A car-sled accident Thursday afternoon in Prescott caused the death of Angie Hartley, 7, of Prescott and injured her sledding companion.

Taken to Rosary Hospital in Corning was Claudette Davidson, 7, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Larry Davidson of Prescott. Her condition was reported good

Monday with no broken bones.

Authorities said the accident occurred when the sled darted into the path of a car driven by Michael D. Gray, 21, of Prescott. No charges were filed.

Services for Angie Hartley were conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist church in Nodaway with Rev. Clair Kerns officiating. Music

was by Mrs. Malcolm Shipley.

Burial was in the Nodaway cemetery beside her sister, Sue Kathleen, who died in 1972.

Angie Hartley was born in Creston Dec. 16, 1970. She is survived by her parents, Larry D. Hartley of Corning and Karen Sue Hartley of Prescott;

a brother, Timothy; and a sister, Carolyn, at home; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hartley of Greenfield and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gaunt of Nodaway; and

great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs Lawrence Osburn.

Holland, George Alexander-

Funeral services were held Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home for George Holland, 87, the Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Norma Paymal was organist and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists.

Casketbearers were Ronald Wurster, Wilbur Johnson, Kenneth Schaffer, Weldon Bolinger, Rodney Bolinger and Walter Johnson.

Burial was in West Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Holland had lived in this area since he was 18 years old.

George Alexander Holland, son of Andrew and Laura (Hunt) Holland, was born Aug. 26, 1890 in  Greene County, Tennessee and passed away at Rosary

hospital in Corning, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1977 at the age of 87 years, two months and 24 days.

He moved to Iowa at the age of 18. On Sept. 16,1909 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Gibson at Bedford, la. Two sons, Wilbur and Laurence were born to this union.

His active life was spent in farming in Taylor county. George resided in the Lenox Care Center for the past two years.

He was preceded in death by his wife May 2, 1950 and two sons.

On March 27, 1961 George married Nellie Beeler at Odebolt, Iowa. George is survived by his wife Nellie, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Knox, Harold -

Harold Knox, 78, of Lenox, died at the Mount Ayr Thursday evening. His death followed a long illness.

Mr. Knox was a retired farmer and had lived in the Lenox from 1942 until about four years ago.

His funeral was at 1:30 p.m. at the Varner funeral at Clearfield. Carl Cummings of Bedford, officiating.

Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Mr. Knox is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Max (Arlene) Pool and Mrs. Gene (Ethel) LeBlac of Silver Springs, Md.;

eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beulah Chester, of Des Moines.

McIntyre, Aulora -

Miss Aulora Mclntyre died at Washington, la. Dec. 15. She had been a resident of the United Presbyterian home there since 1951.

The service was held Dec. 17 at 9 a.m. at Sherman-Eden funeral home, the Rev. Wm. Kettlitz officiating, with interment in Elm Grove cemetery at Washington.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Mclntyre, she was born Nov. 30, 1881 in Adams county. She grew up in the Lenox vicinity and attended school here and the

Teacher's College at Cedar Falls.

Miss Mclntyre served as a missionary for the United Presbyterian church to Africa for more than 35 years.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Minerva Moon of the home in Washington and a brother, Dr. Wm. Mclntyre of Topeka, Kan.

Miller, Lillie Belle Scott -

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 13 at Mercer Center church for Lillie Miller, 97, longtime resident of E. Temple street, in Lenox, the Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Norma Paymal was organist with Marilyn Beck and Helen Brokaw, vocalists.

Casket bearers were Wayne Kimpson, Maurice Kemp, Glen Vogel, Russell Vogel, Don Vogel and Dale Kimpson.

Edna Starks and Lucille Brokaw were flower bearers.

Mrs. Miller had been a patient at Colonial Manor in Corning for several months.

Interment was in the Lincoln Center cemetery. Obituary on inside.

Lille Belle Miller, the daughter of Charles and Adaline Miller Scott, was born on her parents farm in Adams county on June 21, 1880; and passed away at the Rosary hospital in Corning at 9:30 in the morning, Nov. 11, 1977 after being a patient there four days.

She was 97 years, 4 months, and 20 days of age.

As a young girl, Lillie was a member of the Potter Chapel church with her family.

She was united in marriage with James A. Miller on Dec. 20, 1899 at her parents' home near Lincoln Center with Rev. A.Y. Cupp

officiating. The couple farmed in Cass and Taylor counties before moving to their own farm north of Lenox in 1918.

In 1926 she transferred her membership to the Mercer Center United Methodist church where she was an active member and

worked as long as her health permitted. Lillie and James moved into Lenox after retiring from active farming in 1945.

On May 18, 1948 she was preceded in death by her husband, James. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by her four sisters: Daisy May Scott, Mrs. Maude Vogel, Mrs. Florence Kimpson and Mrs. Mabel Kemp.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Lawrence Kemp of Cumberland, nieces and nephews, Maurice Kemp, Wayne and Dale Kimpson, Doris Emerson, Glen, Russell, Ralph and Don Vogel, Helen Mossman, Beulah Bissell and Wilma Schafer with their families as well as many friends.

Preston, Harry Edwin -

Harry Edwin Preston, son of Charles and Agnes Coulter Preston, was born July 20, 1892 on the Preston homestead, northwest of Lenox, Iowa, and passed away

October 19, 1977, at the age of 85 years.

He attended school at Mercer township No. 8. He became a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox in 1915. After his marriage he transferred his membership to the Lenox Christian Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1918-1919 during World War I.

He was united in marriage to Alice Haering, May 5, 1920 at her parents' home. Three sons were born to bless this home, Norman, Carroll and Lowell.

He loved the land, his home, and his family, that was his life, spending every day of his 85 years on the old homestead where he was born except for the time spent

in the service. He was a charter and life member of the Parkinson Post of the American Legion.

Harry was preceded in death by his son, Lowell, who passed away in 1957, at the age of 21; his parents; two sisters, Edith Boyer and Cora Herbst and a brother George.

Survivors include his loyal and faithful wife of 57 years; two sons and their wives, Norman and Jeanne of Liberty, Mo. and Carroll and Pat of Coral Gables, Fla.; seven grandsons, Steve of Chicago, Jon of Sioux City, Mark and Phillip of Liberty, Mo., Mike, Tim and Peter of St. Louis; two granddaughters, Kathy Lanson of Nyack, N.Y. and Chris Brennan of

Minneapolis, Minn.; five great grandchildren, Steven Lowell, Jennifer, Scott, Rebecca and Allison Preston and a sister, Bertha Gordon and a brother, William.

Funeral services were held at  the First Christian Church in Lenox October 22 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Jack Cutbirth officiating.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox. Military rites were conducted by Parkinson Post #250, American Legion.

Music was provided by Ruth Boltinghouse, organist, and Mildred  Walter, vocalist.

Pallbearers were Steve, Mike, Tim, Peter, Phillip and Mark Preston. Jon Preston was his grandmother's escort. Honorary bearers were Kathy Lanson, Chris Brennan,

Margaret, Gwen, Penny and Roma Preston. The register book was cared for by Joe Brennan and Jerry Lanson.

Sweeney, Ellen Marie Leahy -

Ellen Marie Sweeney, daughter of Will Leahy and Margaret Dempsey, was born on Nov. 22, 1897 at Imogene, Iowa and passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 1977 at her home in Lenox, Iowa after a brief illness.

Ellen received her early education in the schools of Imogene, Iowa, and later attended Cedar Falls State Teachers College. She was employed as a teacher until her marriage to

Frank Bernard Sweeney in 1920. The couple resided on farms near the communities of Imogene, Maloy and Conway. Eleven children were born to them and in 1961 the family moved to Lenox.

Mrs. Sweeney is survived by ten children: Mrs. Doyle (Florence) Robinson of Lenox, Mrs. Jack [Maureen) Walton of Denver, Colo., Bill (Marjorie) Sweeney of Prescott, George (Juanita) Sweeney of Lenox, Mrs. Dean (Mary) Evans of Dysart, Iowa, Mrs. Gerald (Catherine) Rainforth of Conway, Mrs. Merle (Frances) Myers of Lincoln, Hubert Sweeney

of Lenox, Carol Ann Sweeney of San Francisco, and Stephen (Sandy) Sweeney of Lenox.

She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter Margaret on June 28, 1964, and by her husband, Frank, on April 28, 1969. Other survivors include 30 grandchildren,

19 great-grandchildren, six brothers: Alton Leahy of Essex, John Leahy of Shenandoah, George Leahy of Imogene, Paul Leahy of Shenandoah, and Joe Leahy of Omaha; two sisters,

Evelyn Lockwood of Omaha and Mary Zens of Minneapolis.

Ellen Sweeney devoted her life to the nurturing and education of her children. She was revered and respected in the community of Lenox for her kindness and

generosity of spirit. Her example of tolerance and fine sense of humor are cherished by those who knew her.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lenox, Iowa. Officiating were Rev. Father Michael O'Meara, Rev. Father

Timothy Fitzgerald and Msgr. Marasco.

Music was by Mary Zens organist and Cathy Evelsizer, organist.

Casket bearers were Stephen Robinson, Mark Walton, Larry Sweeney, David Sweeney, Chris Evans and Paul Rainforth.

Interment was in East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Williams, Doris Darline Butler -

Doris Darline Butler, daughter of Clarence Edwin and Cara Stoner Butler, was born April 2, 1917 in Union county, near Lenox, Iowa, and passed away Nov. 6, 1977 at the Rosary hospital in Corning after an illness of several months.

She was baptized and united with the First Presbyterian church in Lenox April, 1930.

Doris graduated from Lenox High School and attended Simpson College at Indianola. She taught schools for several years in the Lenox area. She later spent several years working in California and Omaha.

Doris was united in marriage to Orville Williams, Feb. 20, 1954 in Omaha, Neb. To this union was born one son, Jerry Williams.

Music was an important part of Doris' life. She devoted many years teaching piano, directing church choirs and also taught Sunday School classes.

Mrs. Williams leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, Orville: son Jerry; grandson. Jayme; two sisters, Mrs. Homer (Beatrice) Walter of Lenox and Mrs. Clarence (Veva) Cline of Van Wert, Ohio; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1954 and mother in April 1977 and a brother Paul in 1951.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 1977 at the Presbyterian church in Lenox.

Music was furnished by Margaret  Whipp, The Beautiful Garden of Prayer and How Great Thou Art, Robert Lockhart, organist.

Pallbearers were Richard Paulson, Marlin Paulson, Ernie Paulson, James Brown, LeRell Wilkinson and Gene Lucas.

Interment was in West Fairview cemetery.
