Derrick, Diane -

Diane Derrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Derrick of Greenfield, Ind., and granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Sweeley of Lenox, died Monday afternoon at St. Vincent hospital in Indianapolis of bronchial infection.

 

Born prematurely on April 22, Diane lived only two months and 25 days. She weighed but slightly more than three pounds at birth and spent the first six

weeks of her life in an incubator. She had been gaining weight steadily and at the time of her sudden death weighed seven and a half pounds.

 

Mrs. Sweeley has been with her daughter since shortly after the birth of the baby.

 

Funeral services were held at Greenfield Wednesday afternoon and burial was made there.

Ely, James LeRoy -

James LeRoy Ely died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines Saturday, June 17, at the age of 56 years, 9 months and 2 days.  He was born September 12, 1882.  Mr. Ely was a former Lenox farmer but he had been living in Des Moines for the past several years.

 

Funeral services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home Tuesday, June 20, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. E. R. Stroud of Redfield. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Ely, James LeRoy -

James LeRoy Ely was the oldest child of Charles and Adah Ely, and was born near Lenox, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1882. He grew to manhood in this community and

became a farmer. He operated a farm until seven years ago when he left the farm and moved to Des Moines. There he made his home until his death, which occurred at the Methodist hospital, June 17, 1939. His age was 56 years, 9 months and 5 days.

 

Mr. Ely was married to Maleta Walker on Feb. 14, 1907 and to them were born four children, all of whom survive him. They are Marvin and James of Hampton, Iowa, Mrs. Maxine Blair and Mrs. Frances Turner of Des Moines. There are also two grandchildren, James and Barbara Blair.

 

Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, Mr. Ely is survived by two sisters, Mrs. L. N. Walter and Mrs. Roy Key, both of Lenox, and one brother, Grover Ely, of Spokane, Wash. 

 

While he was still a young man he became a member of the Calvary Methodist church, Mr. Ely was a good citizen, a kind father and a devoted and benevolent husband and because of his friendly characteristics had many friends both

here and in the neighborhood where he lived and worked in Des Moines.

 

Funeral services were held at the Arnold funeral home in Lenox June 20, and burial was made here.

Frame, Mary Elizabeth Overmire -

Mary Elizabeth Overmire, a daughter of Silas and Martha Overmire, was born on a farm midway between Clearfield and Lenox, on May 17, 1872, and she

passed away at her home near Clearfield on June 3, 1939, aged 67 years and 16 days.

 

Her early childhood was spent on the farm with her parents. During those years she attended the public school at Lenox. 

 

On October 19, 1898, she and Clarence Frame were united in marriage. They began this part of their life on a farm three miles south of Clearfield—then

moved to Lenox, where she spent 14 years on a farm. They then moved to Clearfield, where for the last 21 years they have resided on the farm northeast of town. Six children were born to this union, three of whom preceded her in death—Marion, Paul and Elton.

 

She is survived by her husband Clarence, two sons, Glenn and Floyd, of Clearfield, and a daughter Eunice Calkin, also of Clearfield. Nine grandchildren.

Two sisters, Edna Hewitt of Lenox, and Lellie Crittendem of Downey, California, and many other relatives.

 

She began her Christian life by uniting with the Presbyterian church of Lenox.

Upon moving to Clearfield she had her membership transferred to the Methodist church. A Christian life was more to her than a membership.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, June 5, Rev. M. O. McKenzie conducting the service.  Singing by a quartet, Misses Margaret Swan and Jane Bailey, E. C. Heaton and M. O. McKenzie.  Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.

Harding, Charles E. -

A message was received last week telling of the death of Charles E. Harding, Sr., of Des Moines on May 22, 1939. Mr. Harding was a cousin of George

S. Beach of Lenox and has visited here several times.

 

Mr. Harding was 83 years old and was very active until a short time before his death, when he contracted pneumonia and passed away suddenly in a Des Moines hospital.

 

He is survived by his wife and three adopted children, an aged sister, Miss Nettie C. Harding, who lives in Des Moines and many nephews and nieces.

Heaton, Edward Crary -

E. C. Heaton, 59, prominent Clearfield business man and a member of the Taylor county bar, died suddenly at his home last Thursday. Funeral services

were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church, in Clearfield. Burial

was made in the Clearfield cemetery.  Members of the Taylor and Ringgold county bar attended the services.

 

Obituary

Edward Crary Heaton, son of Edward B. and Adaline Heaton, was born on a farm northeast of Diagonal, la., July 23, 1879, and died June 15, 1939, at the age 59 years, 10 months and 2 days.

 

His father was a minister and it was necessary that the family move to different places during the early school life of the children.

 

Mr. Heaton attended the Normal College at Afton, then spent one year at Tabor College, after which the family located in Indianola and he was graduated from Simpson College in 1902.  The following year he entered the teaching profession in Des Moines, and in 1905 he was elected superintendent of the Clearfield public school.

 

In 1907 Mr. Heaton entered the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he took up the study of law.  Later he attended the Drake University at Des Moines and finished his law course there.

 

In 1909 Mr. Heaton became superintendent of schools at Anthon, la. On Sept. 26, 1912, he was married to Alice M. Griffen of Anthon. To them were born

two daughters, Adaline E. and Barbara, W.

 

For three years Mr. Heaton was in the hardware business with his father-in-law, but in 1916 he resumed teaching by becoming professor of mathematics

in Sioux City. The next year his health became impaired and he retired from teaching and went back to the Heaton homestead where he lived until 1918 when he was again chosen superintendent of the Clearfield school.  With the exception of three years which he spent in Osceola and Fairfield, Mr. Heaton and family made their home in Clearfield since then. In 1929 Mr. Heaton became engaged in business and operated a store.

 

Mr. Heaton was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Persis Heaton Trimble, and a half brother, Ernest Heaton. He never fully recovered from the

shock of his sister's death in 1937.

 

Music at the funeral services was furnished by a quartet composed of Guy Henderson, Don Green, Kenneth Baxter, and Pherrin Dowell. The services were in charge of Rev. M. O. McKenzie.

Holland, James Earl -

James Earl, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Holland was born Friday, June 30, and passed away at 8:40 o'clock Sunday morning, July 2. Besides his parents and little brother, Howard, he is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Holland and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Beckett, two great grandmothers, Mrs. Granger and Mrs. Mary Gibson of Novinger, Mo., three uncles and two aunts and a number of other relatives.

 

Funeral services were conducted at the home 5 miles east of Lenox Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee.  Burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Lovell, Edna Beach Holbrook –

Mrs. Edna Beach Lovell passed away at her home in San Bernardino, Calif., Monday, July 24, at the age of 57 years. Mrs. Lovell is a daughter of George S.

Beach, Sr., of this city and was born here and moved to California in 1923.

 

She had been in poor health for the past year, but her death came very unexpectedly. Her husband and one daughter survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at San Bernardino.

Lovell, Edna M. Beach Holbrook -

Edna M. Beach Lovell was born near Lenox, la., Sept. 13, 1883 and passed away at her home in San Bernardino, Calif. July 24, 1939. She was the daughter of Luella E. and George S. Beach, Sr. She was one of a family of eight children, three who have preceded her in death.

 

Her early life was spent near Lenox. She attended the Lenox high school, devoting most of her time to the study of music. In 1905 she was married to H.

C. Holbrook and to this union one child, Lorina Jeanne, was born. Later in 1918 she was married to I. Dwight Lovell, formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland.

 

In 1923 they moved to California where they have since resided.  She is survived by her devoted husband and daughter, Mrs. Lorina J. Doig, two grandchildren, Diana Jeanne and Ronald Dwight Doig, her aged father, George S. Beach Sr., of Lenox, three sisters, Mrs. Nelle Beach Hetz and Mrs. Luella E.

Cottell, both of Lenox and Mrs. Effie J. Jacoby, her twin sister of Lee's Summit, Mo., one brother, Clifford S. Beach of Sharpsburg, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

Mrs. Lovell was a member of the O. E. S. Chapter of Lenox, having affiliated shortly after it was organized.

 

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 26. The immediate relatives residing in California who were able to attend the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Bender and Mrs. Helen Benson of Hollywood and Mrs. Nelson Van Houten and Mrs. Geo. H. Beach Jr., of Long Beach.

Miller, Mary Rita -

Mary Rita Miller, daughter of Wm. A. Miller, died at St. Joseph's hospital in Omaha, Thursday, June 15, following an illness of about three weeks. She

was born Oct. 16, 1917, near Prescott, la., and at the time of her death was only 7 months 27 days past 21.

 

Her mother preceded her in death May 28, 1925. She is survived by her father, Wm. A. Miller, two sisters, Mrs. June Brokaw and Helen Miller, and two

brothers, Bernard at home and Vincent of Omaha. There are also two nephews, Ronald Brokaw and Michael Miller.

 

Rita, as she was known to her many friends, was a girl possessed of the finest qualities of young womanhood, being most kind and considerate to those

who were of advanced age as well as to her many young friends. She was always ready to help anyone in need of assistance and her place in the home and community cannot be filled.

 

She was a graduate of the Lenox high school in the class of 1936. She was a devout Catholic. Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's church in Lenox

Monday morning, June 18, at 9 o'clock, with the Rev. P. J. McStay officiating. Pall bearers were Glen Hayes, Arthur Jones, John Jones, Homer O'Connell,

Lawrence Miller and Paul Lewis Miller. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery at Corning.

Monahan, John R. -

John R. Monahan, son of James and Sarah Monahan, was born at Saltillo, Washington Co., Indiana, Nov. 17, 1859, and died at the home of his son, Charles E. Monahan in Denver, Colo., May 31, 1939.

 

When but a young boy he came with his parents to Iowa. He prepared himself for a teaching position and after teaching for several years, he attended

Stanberry College at Stanberry Mo. There he met Miss Jennie Stream of Creston, la., whom he later married. They lived for several years in Burt County, Nebraska, later coming back to Iowa.

 

Mr. Monahan engaged in the mercantile business in Sharpsburg and Gravity for some time, but liking farm life, he bought a farm in Union county where

he lived for a number of years before moving to a farm near Diagonal, now operated by his son, Ray G.

 

Because of failing health, they moved to Lincoln, Nebr. to make their home with their daughter Viva.

 

Early in life he was converted to the Christian faith and united with the Baptist church but in later life was a member of the Presbyterian church.

 

He is survived by three sons Ralph W. and Charles E. of Denver, Colo., and Ray G. of Diagonal; one daughter, Viva Elizabeth of Lincoln, Nebr.; three brothers, T. J. Monahan  of St. Anthony, Idaho; J. H. Monahan of Corning; and R. B. Monahan of Gravity; four sisters: Mrs.  Sarah E. West of Corning; Mrs. E. S. Menoher of Lake Worth, Florida; Mrs. W. J. Nevius of Bedford;  and Mrs. C. E. Menoher of Lenox; and seven grandchildren.  His wife preceded him in death on July 15, 1938.

 

Funeral services were held at the Helmsdorfer funeral chapel in Lincoln, Nebr. Saturday June 3.  Interment was made in Wyuka cemetery.

Morris, Harvey G. -

Harvey G. Morris, son of David and Nancy Morris, was born near Morrison, Ill. March 29, 1872 and passed away at his home Wednesday evening, June 7, at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 10 days.  He had been confined to his bed for several months before his death.

Mr. Morris grew to manhood in Page county, near Yorktown, la. He was united in marriage to Sarah Morris of Jefferson, la. on Feb. 7, 1889. Twelve children

were born, four preceding him in death. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Ray and Robert of Jefferson, la., and David and Lewis of Lenox; four daughters Mildred Strait of Corning, Bertha Stapleton of Burlington, now a widow who will make her home with her mother, Dorothy Cohenour of Burlington, and Eunice Morris of Los Angeles; three sisters, Jennie Alexander of Gravity, Evelyn Apple of St. Edwards, Nebr. and Lydia Alexander of  Spearfish, S. D. and ten grandchildren. His parents and six brothers preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Morris spent many years of his life as a contractor and carpenter. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church.

 

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Harry W. Orr at the Barber Funeral home Friday afternoon at 1:30. Interment was made in the Yorktown cemetery.

Moser, David R. -

D. R. Moser died at his home in Sharpsburg Wednesday morning, June 14, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered Monday night. Mr. Moser had

been a resident of  Taylor county for many years residing on a farm near Sharpsburg until moving into town in 1936.

 

David R. Moser was born Mar. 3, 1871 in Manroe county, Ohio and passed away at his home June 14 at the age of 68 years 4 months and 10 days.

 

On March 3, 1898 he was married to Miss Margaret Ritter making their home near Brooks la. Seven children were born, two dying in infancy.

 

He is survived by his wife; one son, Martin Moser of Sharpsburg; and four daughters, Mrs William Cochran of Gravity, Mrs. William Orme of Nodaway

Mrs. Wesley Campain of Council Bluffs; and Mrs. Lloyd Cochran of Milan, Mo. Also two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Walters of Prescott and Mrs. H. N. Walters of Nodaway; five brothers, Chas. of Villisca, Fred of Homewood, Kans., Herman of Nodaway, Joe of Council Bluffs and William of Porterville, Calif.

 

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg. Burial was made in the Methodist Grove cemetery near Brooks, Ia.

Nalean, Lawrence A. -

Lawrence A. Nalean, 56, owner of the Nalean Motor company in Corning, died at his home Saturday after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, four sisters and three brothers. Services were held Monday afternoon at the home and burial was made in Des Moines.

Porter, Jefferson John -

A son, Jefferson John, born Tuesday, July 11, to Mr. and Mrs. Harley Allen Porter of Kingsley, Iowa, died Wednesday evening at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City.

 

Mr. and Mrs. John Porter, who had been called to Sioux City Wednesday, by the serious condition of the mother, left there at three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, at which time the baby was considered to be gaining. It died about 6 o'clock.

 

Funeral services will be held here later this week.

Runyan, Donna Mary Caldwell -

Donna Mary (Caldwell) Runyan, the seventh child of John and Mary Caldwell, was born August 23, 1855 and died at her home in Lenox, Iowa, on July 15, 1939.

 

She lived all her single life at Monmouth, Illinois. In 1879, she was married to T. Henry Runyan To this union were born three children, E. Earl, deceased,

Mrs. Ethel Copeland, a resident of Lenox and T. G. Runyan of Tacoma, Washington.

 

For two years Mr. and Mrs. Runyan lived at Fontenelle, Ill., then bought a farm southeast of Lenox where they resided for eight years. They then moved into Lenox, where the remainder of her life was spent. Mrs. Runyan was one of a family of ten children, only three of which are living, one sister and two

brothers.

 

At the age of twelve years she united with the Presbyterian church and has been a devoted member until the time of her death. She was a long time

member of the Ladies Missionary Society and also a charter member of the Reading Circle.

 

Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by four granddaughters,

Mrs. Clifford Walter and Phyllis Copeland of Lenox and Donna Smith and Phyllis Runyan of Tacoma, Wash., and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. W. Orr, assisted by Dr. A. L. Davidson. Interment was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Snyder, Rex -

Rex Snyder, 40, a World War veteran, died about 1:30 Sunday morning at the Chicken Inn, three miles west of Creston on Highway 34, following a fight with Chet Truman, 23, also of Creston.

 

Truman admitted that he struck Snyder but says Snyder started the trouble. Physicians who examined Snyder said there of was nothing to indicate that it was  a blow that had killed him. Snyder was receiving total disability pay from the government because of war injuries and there was some thought that the excitement of the quarrel killed him.

 

LATER – A coroner’s jury reporting Wednesday, decided that Snyder came to his death as a result of an assault by Truman.  Bonds for Truman were fixed at $2000.

Tussey, Thomas L. –

Thomas L. Tussey of Shannon City passed away at the Greater Community hospital in Creston Friday morning after several weeks illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude Tussey, one son, Clarence of Shannon City, one daughter, Mrs. Wade L. Menoher of Palmer, la. and three grandsons.

Short services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home Sunday afternoon

for David Lee, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wynn, born Saturday morning

at the Des Moines General hospital.  Services were conducted by the Rev. Moneymaker of the Presbyterian church.
