Borden, Alfred Fernando –
Alfred
Fernando Borden was born Sept. 11, 1887 and passed away October 1, 1952 at his
home in Sharpsburg, at the age of 65 years and 19 days. He was born one-half mile south of Sharpsburg
and lived his entire life in and around Sharpsburg. He united with the Presbyterian church when a young man.
Alfred F.
Borden, a life-long resident of Taylor County, died at his home south of
Sharpsburg Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1952. He
was a retired farmer. He is survived by
his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Irene Gold of Clarinda, and Mrs. Pauline Sheley, Guthrie Center, and one sister, Nellie of
Sharpsburg. The body was at the J. R.
Crew funeral home in Clearfield. Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian church in
Sharpsburg and burial was in Gravity cemetery.

Ella -
Friends and
relatives were deeply grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. Ella (grandma) Brookman at the Perry Williams
home in Bedford
Thursday afternoon. She had been at the Williams home for several months.
Grandma as she was known by all, had been unable to leave her home for a long
time, but enjoyed having her friends call and always wanting them to stay
longer and come again. Funeral services were held Sunday at the 'Christian
Church here. [Gravity]

Fulton, Beryl “Happy” -
Word has been received of the death of Beryl (Happy) Fulton,
54, at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 6th. He is survived by his wife,
the former Eleanor Hidley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Truman Hidley of Clearfield, Iowa. The body was
brought to Clearfield and funeral services were held July 9 at the Methodist
church. Burial in the Clearfield cemetery with Masonic rites.

Frank Austin Green, son of Niles and Elzina Hinkle Green, was born February 1, 1872 on farm southwest of Clearfield
and died at his home in east Clearfield Sunday afternoon Oct. 5, 1952 at the age of 80 years 8 months and 4 days and obtained his
education near the place of his birth. Upon reaching manhood he chose farming
as his work.
On November 4, 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Mable
Turner at the home of her parents south of Lenox. They located on a farm near
Clearfield. To this union were born
three sons. Harold and an infant son preceding their father
in death, Donald E. of Creston; two daughters Vera Bladon of Clearfield and Artel Keller of Diagonal.
When a young man he united with the Baptist Church later
transferring his membership to the Christian Church, He was a
member for many years of the Noble Grand Masonic Lodge with
the exception of one year spent in Independence, Mr. and
Mrs. Green lived near Clearfield and moved into town in
1916. He saw many changes take place
through the four score
years he lived.
He was an upright and honorable citizen, a good neighbor, a
faithful and loving father and a devoted grandfather.
Besides the two sons he was preceded in death by his parents
and two brothers, Henry and Roy. Surviving are his
wife,
the one son and two daughters seven grandchildren and one great grand child.
Services were held October 7, at the J. R. Crew Funeral
Home, with Rev. Leroy Cronkhite officiating. Burial
was made in
Clearfield Cemetery. Casket Bearers were Tom Jamison, W. A. McKinstry, Leo
Wilson, Harry Black, Fred Clute and E. Baxter.

Mrs. Sarah Grimm passed away Sunday evening at the home of
her son, Tom Grimm. Mrs. Grimm has been
ill several months. She is survived by
five sons and one daughter.

Grimm, Sarah Ellen Elliott -
Sarah Ellen
Grimm was born January 12, 1865 at Green Castle, Pennsylvania and passed away
at the home of her son Thomas Grimm after a long illness, on July 13, 1952 at
the age of 87 years and six months.
She was the
daughter of William and Elizabeth Elliott.
She was
married to George W. Grimm on October 17, 1885 and to this union were born
eight children: Lloyd, Len and Thomas of Sharpsburg, Ben of Humeston,
Mrs. Hazel Ditto of South Makwa, Sask., Canada, Louis
of Milwaukee, Wis., John Seaton and Mrs. Maude Leley,
deceased. Mrs. Grimm moved from Illinois
in 1896 and has been a resident of this vicinity for 56 years. Her husband
preceded her in death March 16, 1948.
She leaves
to mourn her passing six children, one brother, Jesse Elliott of London Mills,
Ill., 29 grandchildren and 30
great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Shortly after coming
to the Sharpsburg community she united with the Presbyterian church,
where she remained a member until the time of her death.
She was a
kind and loving mother and a willing neighbor, always happy doing for others.
Services
were held in the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church Wednesday, July 16 with the
Rev. Donald Watkins conducting
the services. Interment in the Gravity cemetery.

Mrs. Doud Hunter passed away Saturday afternoon at her home in
Sharpsburg after a few hours illness. She is survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters and
several grandchildren.

Catherine Long -
Emma
Catherine, youngest daughter of Anson D. and Sarah E. Long, was born April 20,
1879 in a log cabin in Page county,
Iowa, and
died July 12, 1952 at her home in Sharpsburg at the age of 73 years, 2 months
and 22 days.
On May 26,
1897, she was married to George Doud Hunter. To them
were born six children, three daughters, Helen Andrews of Chicago, Pearl Burns
of Lorimor and Daisy Moore of Sharpsburg and three
sons, Doudant Hunter, Jr. of Vesta,
Minn., Dale Hunter of Des Moines and Max Hunter of Eldon, Mo.
Mrs. Hunter
was a member of the Sharpsburg Methodist church. She was preceded in death by
her parents, one brother
one sister and
one infant grandson, Kenneth Paul Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter celebrated their
55th wedding anniversary
in May of this
year.
She is
survived by her husband and six children, seven grandchildren, Robert Burns of Lorimor, Kathryn Moore of Sharpsburg, Delvin, Doudie and Diane Hunter of Vesta,
Minn., Janet Sue Hunter of Eldon, Mo.; and one sister, Mrs. Leslie
Dirrim of Villisca.
Services
were held Monday, July 14 at the Sharpsburg Methodist church with the Rev. John Kess conducting the services.
Interment in the Old Memory cemetery at New Market.

All of the
children of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mendenhall were present at his funeral services
which were Friday at the Methodist Church. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
The
following obituary was read at the services:
James
Harland Mendenhall was born February 11, 1898 to Charles H. and Ivy E.
Mendenhall at Allendale, Missouri where he grew to young manhood. He was united in marriage to Edna Mae Dehart
June 21, 1926. To this union were born
five children, Mrs. Valnetta Craft, Oakdale, Calif.; Ivor E. Mendenhall, Manteca, Calif.; Victor E. Mendenhall,
Sharpsburg, Ia., Mrs. Loris Sheridan, Lenox; and Elvis E. Mendenhall, Turlock,
California.
Early in
life he joined the Baptist Church at Lotts Grove,
Missouri. After moving to Lenox he
transferred his membership to the Methodist Church. He was a member of Tremont Lodge No. 343 A.F.
and A.M.
Mr.
Mendenhall entered into rest Oct. 22, 1952 at his home in Lenox. Besides his faithful wife and children he
leaves to mourn his passing: two sisters, Mrs. Dale Benson, West Plains,
Missouri, Mrs. Hazel Davis, Mt. Ayr, Iowa, seven
grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Kenneth Peltier, 45, a veteran, died Monday at 11:50 a.m. at the
home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Peltier, 5
miles southeast of Lenox. Survivors: His parents, three
sisters, Mrs. Carroll Wainwright of Hill City, Kansas, Virginia of Chicago, Ill.,
and Mrs. Jack Palmer of Centerville.
Services
were Wednesday at Clearfield.

Peltier,
Kenneth Sargent -
Kenneth Sargent Peltier, son of Maude Sargent and Claude Peltier was
born April 1, 1908 at Clearfield, Iowa, and died at his home Monday, Sept. 22,
1952 at the age of 44 years, 5 months and 21 days. He attended the rural school and graduated
from the Lenox High School with the class of 1926.
During the pastorate
of Dr. Davidson in 1923 he united with the United Presbyterian Church at
Lenox. From 1927 to 1942 he lived in
Fort Morgan, Colo., and Milwaukee, Wisc. Immediately after Pearl Harbor, while living
at Milwaukee, Kenneth enlisted in the armed services, serving faithfully for
three years, 26 months of which were in the Middle East command and the
China-Burma-India theater. In April 1945, he received his discharge with
the rank of Sargeant, and returned to his home in
Lenox. He had always been interested in
livestock and engaged in the broiler chicken business.
He is
survived by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Carroll Wainwright, Hill City,
Kansas, Mrs. Robert Lundberg, Stokie, Ill., and Mrs.
Jack Palmer, Centerville, four nieces, five nephews, one grand niece and number
of other relatives and friends.
Kenneth was
well liked by all who knew him and was never happier than when doing some
kindly service for family and friends in his own quiet way. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him
and who knew he retrained his engaging smile and sense of humor through several
years of ill health and suffering.
Funeral
services were Wednesday Sept. 24, at the United Presbyterian Church in
Clearfield, with burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

The death of
Miss Alice Pigott occurred July 9th in Spokane,
Wash., where she had made her home with her sister,
Mrs. Merton
Ely. Death was due to a stroke. Miss Pigott was an
old time resident of Lenox and a graduate of the Lenox schools. She was a
cousin of Miss Lizzie Finn.

Wesley Ralph Poore, son of Wesley Ames and Lucy A. Poore was born near Maloy, Iowa
January 30, 1899, and departed the life at the Ringgold County Hospital October
15, 1952 at the age of 53 years, 8 months and 15 days.
His early
boyhood was spent around Maloy. In 1905 the family moved to south of Mt Ayr where they lived until 1911. From there they moved to the Beaconsfield
area, where he spent the rest of his life.
On October
12, 1918 he enlisted in the U.S. Army from which he was later honorably
discharged.
June 9, 1920
he was united in marriage to Goldie Bryant, who preceded him in death May 20,
1946. To this union were born five
children, four of whom survive him, Glen of Grand River, Mrs. Richard Boylen and Miss Ruby Poore of Des
Moines, and Mrs. A. G. Hickman of Chariton.
January 7,
1948 he was united in marriage to Jo Anna Henry, of Lenox.
He united
with the Beaconsfield Methodist church in 1914 and remained an active worker in
the church through his life.
He leaves to
mourn his passing his wife, four children, five grandchildren, five brothers, Pearley of Beaconsfield, Alvin of Mt. Ayr,
Orville of Drysant, Iowa, two half sister, Mrs. C. E. Rassett of Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. E. J. McMahon of
Lincoln, Neb., several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
His father
and mother, two half sisters and one half-brother preceded him in death.

Susan Viola, daughter of Mary Ellen and William Isaac Knott,
was born at Sharpsburg, Iowa, January 3, 1887 and passed away at the Community
hospital in Creston, June 29, 1952 at the age of 65 years, 6 months, and 26
days.
Viola grew to womanhood in the Sharpsburg community and on
October 17, 1906, she was united in marriage to Walter
Scott. To this union were born three daughters and two sons.
Viola spent her entire life in the Sharpsburg community, except for one year
spent in Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Methodist church in Sharpsburg,
where she was a faithful worker, taking part in the different
church organizations. She was preceded in death
by one daughter, Helen, and her mother and father. She leaves to mourn her
departure her husband, Walter, and her children, Hazel at home, Mrs. Faye Ratliffe, William Nelson Scott and Donald Walter Scott,
seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of the Sharpsburg community;
and two brothers, Bert E. Knott, Mission, Texas and Chas. Knott, Sharpsburg;
five sisters, Miss Elva Knott, Fort, Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Jessie Hyatt and Mrs. Oma Eno of Lincoln, Neb.,
and Mrs. Maude Weller and Mrs. Ila Smith of
Sharpsburg, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
Viola was a kind and loving companion and mother. She was a
friend to everyone, always ready and willing to give a
helping hand wherever it was needed. She will be greatly missed in the community [Poem]
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 2 at the
Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. John Kess. Burial at Lenox.

Vivian.]
Word was received of the death of a former resident, Mrs.
Clara Snyder in Wyoming. She was the
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Plummer. Besides her husband and two daughters, three
sisters survive, Mable Berkey, Alice Moore and
Bernice Taggert.
Mrs. Snyder was a graduate of Clearfield High School and
also later was a teacher in the school.

Harry Spurrier, 76, died Sept. 25, 1952 in a Long Beach Calif.
hospital after a lingering illness. He was born in Kent, Ia.,
the son of Mr.
and Mrs S F Spurrier.
Upon
completing his education he entered the mercantile business and was located for
a number of years in Sharpsburg.
He was
married to Ada Bowen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Bowen of Clearfield. The moved to
Billings, Mont. abut 1912 and a few years later to Long Beach, where they
established a store which they operated until failing health compelled them to
retire. He was always active in the work
of the Christian church wherever he lived.
To cherish
the memory are his wife, Ada, the adopted daughter,
Mrs. Ruth Dart and husband, two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mable Webster of Glendale, Calif., five
brothers, Zene, Paul and Carroll of California; Roy
of Des Moines and Albert of Clearfield. Funeral services and burial were in Long Beach.

Word was received
in Clearfield Thursday of the death in Brush, Colo. of Herbert Stephens, 55,
son of the late Mr and Mrs. A. Stephens. The family lived for many years southwest of
Clearfield. Herbert had a blood clot and
the limb was amputated Nov. 12, above the knee, but evidently a clot formed in
the heart for he died suddenly Dec. 1. His wife and sister, Mrs. Ed Ray were with him
to the end. Clyde Stephens, a brother
and Dwight Stephens of Mt. Ayr attended the funeral
services Dec. 4.

Mrs. Geo. DePew received word recently of the death on Aug. 10 of
Galen Ving of Custer, Mont. He will be remembered by
many Gravity
people as they lived here for many years before moving to Montana. He was born
in 1879 and died Aug. 10,
1952. He
leaves to mourn, his loving wife, three daughters and one son. Funeral services
were held Aug. 13 from the Custer Congregational Church in Custer. Burial in Custer cemetery.

Three have
died as the result of the collision between two cars on a country road 10 miles
northwest of Creston Wednesday night, Sept. 11. The dead are Mrs. Robert Young,
20 and her two year old daughter, Sandra Lee, of Creston and Jim Wilmeth, 19, of Orient. The mother and baby died within a
few hours of the accident. Wilmeth died early Sunday
morning of injuries.
Young Wilmeth, employee at Radio Station KSIB and Robert Young,
an automobile mechanic at Creston, were the drivers of the cars, which were
both practically demolished in the collision.
