A little son, Francis. Wayne, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blair February 13, and
departed this life February 14, leaving to mourn his going this parents, a
little sister, Bernice, and many relatives and friends.

Mrs. Donna Runyan received a telegram advising her of the death of her
oldest brother, J. N. Caldwell of Manhattan, Kansas. Mr Caldwell was 84 years old and although he had not been well, his
death was sudden. Mrs. Runyon
received a letter written by him after she had received the telegram telling of his
death.

Colvin, Washington Irving –
Washington
Irving Colvin was born at Columbus, Ohio, April 30, 1837 and died March 1, at
his home in Sharpsburg. He moved with
his parents to Illinois in 1848. He
attended college in Bloomington, Illinois, and was married in 1860 to Margaret
C. Wise, to which union seven children were born, of which five are living:
Mrs. Jessie M. Cunningham, Mankato, Kan.; Ralph I. Colvin, Peoria, Ill.; Mrs.
Mary B. Norris, Belleville, Kan.; John H. Colvin, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs.
Margaret C. Townsley, Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Colvin
enlisted in the 88th Illinois infantry in August 1862 and served until the end of the war,
having been engaged in 12 decisive battles.
He united
with the Presbyterian church in 1861. His wife died in Winfield in 1877, and he
moved to Taylor county in 1882. He was married in 1887 to Mrs. Amy E. Brewer
to which union two children were born. Mrs. Bessie E. Reed, Sharpsburg, and Mrs. Carrine W. Robinson, Conway.
Besides his
children he leaves twenty-six grandchildren and five great grand-children to
mourn his loss. Funeral services were
conducted from the Presbyterian church Saturday at
11a.m. by Rev. McVey and Rev. Whitmore. Burial was at Windfield, conducted by his sons
Ralph and John.

Conaway, Margaret Kemple -
Mrs. Margaret Kemple Conaway, who was taken seriously ill two weeks
ago, died Friday morning, April 26, at 1:25. Although it was known that she was
very low, her death coming so suddenly was quite a shock to her friends. The
funeral was held at the home at 11a. m., Saturday, April 27,
conducted by Rev. McCartney, of the M. E. church. The decorations
included a beautiful floral star by the Eastern Star, and wreaths by the Masons
and Clearfield businessmen. Mrs. Conaway was 36 years of age; was married to
Arthur S. Conaway in 1915. They came to make their home at Clearfield in 1921,
where Mr. Conaway has been the Burlington station agent. She leaves a husband
and mother, two
brothers and three sisters. The body was taken Saturday to Corydon, where funeral
services wore held and interment made. Mrs Conaway
was born in Corydon and made that city her home until she came to Clearfield.

Conwell, Mrs. James -
Mrs. James Conwell
of Pequot died Friday at St. Joseph hospital Brainerd, Minn., Feb. 8th. The funeral services were held Tuesday
morning at St. Francis Catholic church and burial was made in Evergreen
cemetery. Mrs. Conwell was born at New
Orleans, La. February 27th, 1867. The deceased was well known in Lenox as Mr.
and Mrs. Conwell were residents of Lenox for many years. She was a woman of
high Ideals and pleasing personality and her host of friends will learn of her
death with sincere sorrow.

Cox, Caroline Sturm -
Caroline
Sturm, daughter of Andrew and Sarah Sturm, was born in Peoria county, Ill., April 3, 1856, and departed this life March
17, 1929, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maud Dunn, near Conway, at the age
of 72 years, 11 months and 14 days.
February 20,
1880, she was united in marriage to Frank Cox, of Peoria county,
Ill. To this union were born four children, one child, Miss Grace, preceding
her mother in death. In 1890 she, with her husband and
family, came to Iowa,
settling near Sharpsburg, where they lived until about three years ago, when they moved into Conway. Shortly
after coming to Iowa Mrs. Sturm united with the Blue Grove Christian church,
where she continued a faithful member, as long as her health would permit.
She leaves
to mourn her departure, her husband and three children, Mrs. Maud Dunn, Conway;
Mrs. Blanche Johnson, Bedford; and Roy Cox, Creston. Four brothers, Jed Sturm, Sharpsburg; Charley Sturm,
Creston; and Will and Eddie Sturm of
Chillicothe, Ill., also survive her. One
brother and two sisters preceded her in death. She also leaves three grandchildren besides a host of relatives and
friends.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, March 20, at the Conway M. E. church, conducted by
Rev. James Wilkins. Interment was in the
Conway cemetery.

Ellis, Olive Arnold -
Olive Arnold
Ellis, wife of Dr. H. E. Ellis, was born in Olin, September 14, 1855, and
departed this life at her home in Lenox April 16, 1929, at the age of 73 years,
7 months and 2 days. Most of her life was spent in Iowa. Dr. and Mrs. Ellis
came to Lenox in 1901
and after a few years moved to Diagonal, finally returning to this city,
January 1927.
On November
1, 1868 she was united in marriage to Dr. Herman E. Ellis at Wyoming,
Iowa. God blessed their union with six
children, three boys and three girls, two of whom died in infancy and one
daughter at 18 years of age. Mrs. Ellis
is survived by her devoted husband and life companion for more than sixty
years, and the three children, Mrs. Bert Peacock, of Lenox; Roy H., of Los
Angeles, Calif., and Wm. H., of Leander, Wyo. There are five grandchildren
and three great
grandchildren, also one brother survives her, Ed Arnold, of Brock, Nebr.
Very early
in life, Mrs. Ellis confessed Christ as her Saviour and
united with the M. E. church, where she has been a devoted and active member
during her lifetime. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She has been
constantly ill for two years.
For her in
our hearts and enshrined in our very being, there has been but one sentiment,
the sentiment that is born of a loyal Christian spirit, and a mother's
love and
devotion that lives eternal in the soul.
The funeral
will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the M. E. church, conducted by Rev.
E. B. Stroud. Interment will be in the
Lenox cemetery.

Flick, J. P. -
J. P. Flick,
one of the best known attorneys in Taylor county, died
at his home in Bedford Monday morning at the age of 84 years. For sixty eight
years he has been a resident of Taylor county.
Mr. Flick
was admitted to the bar in 1870 and at the time of his death was the senior
member of the Flick & Lucas law firm of Bedford. In 1862 Mr. Flick enlisted
in Company K, Fourth Iowa infantry. He was noncommissioned officer and took
part in all of the engagements in which his regiment participated except the
battles of Pea Ridge and Bentonville. Returning home after the war, he was elected county recorder of Taylor county.
He was
elected to the seventeenth general assembly of Iowa and served for one term. He
succeeded Smith McPherson as district attorney of the third judicial district
and served one year. He was then elected for the succeeding
term of four
years, after which the office was abandoned by the legislature.
Mr. Flick was elected in the eighth congressional
district to the fifty-first and fifty-second congress.
Following
his active work in politics, Mr. Flick devoted his time to the practice of law.
Surviving
are his widow, four daughters, Mrs. Albert Cochrane, of Denver, Colo.; Mrs.
Cora Beall, of Bedford; Mrs. Ray Lucas, of Oelwein;
and two sons, Neal Flick of Oelwein, and Bruce J. Flick, an attorney at Des
Moines.

Graff, Margarette Scroggs –
Lenox
friends of Mrs. George L. Graff, of Des Moines, were greatly shocked to learn
of her death last Saturday night.
Mrs. Graff
underwent an operation in a Des Moines hospital on Thursday and every
indication was that she was improving nicely, but the end came suddenly
Saturday evening.
Mrs. Graff
will be remembered as Margarette Scroggs,
eldest child of Dr. and Mrs. J. P. Scroggs, both
deceased. She was born and raised in this city and lived here until her
marriage to George L. Graff of Des Moines.
She united
with the Methodist church when a child and for seven years was organist there.
The body
will be brought here for burial on the afternoon train Thursday and will be
taken immediately to the Methodist church, where short services will be held
about 3:30 o’clock.

Hamblin, Mary Catherine Mathers –
Mary
Catherine Mathers, daughter of James and Edie Mathers, was born near Willowcreek,
Mo. December 9, 1853 and departed this life at her home in Sharpsburg Monday
May 6, 1929 at the age of 75 years, four months and 27 days.
At an early
age she moved with her parents to a farm near Honey Creek just east of Bedford,
and grew to young womanhood. Her common
school education was gained in the country school of that community and she
furthered her education in the Bedford public schools, attending there about
three years.
On November
25, 1880, she was united in marriage to Frank L. Hamblin. The marriage was
performed in the Presbyterian manse in Bedford by the Rev. R. A. McKinley, who
was a first cousin of President William McKinley. Mr.
and Mrs.
Hamblin established their new home on their farm west of
Sharpsburg,
where they lived until 10 years ago when they moved to
Sharpsburg. To them were born three children—Chester F.
who lives on a farm west of Sharpsburg; Jessie Pearl Cundy,
who with her husband lives
on the old
homestead; and Oma Vesta Hamblin, who preceded her mother, at the age of 18 years, while attending
school at Howard Lake, Minn.
Mrs. Hamblin
united with the Presbyterian church in the spring of
1881 and remained a faithful adherent to the end of her life. Four years ago
the latter part of February, Mrs. Mary Hamblin fell at her home, sustaining
injuries to
her hip from
which she never fully recovered, and she has been confined
to a wheel
chair since that time. She suffered a great deal but was always ready to greet
her many friends with a happy smile and pleasant words. The home has lost a
loving wife and mother and the community one of its finest
Christian
pioneers.
She is
survived by her husband two children Chester F. and Mrs. Jessie Cundy, seven grand children, one sister and five half
sisters besides a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg Wednesday afternoon, May 8, at
two o'clock,
conducted by the Rev. Roy L. Whitmore, and burial given in the cemetery at
Gravity, Iowa. Beautiful floral offerings and a large gathering of relatives
and friends bespoke the high esteem in which she was held.

Johnson, Andrew Scott -
Andrew Scott
Johnson, aged 84 years, died at his home in Clearfield Saturday, March 9th.
Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday, March 12, at
10:30,
Interment at Gravity cemetery. Mr. Johnson has been in poor health for some
time. He was a veteran of the Civil war and with his passing J. D, Noble is the
only one of the G. A. R post living in Clearfield. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson lived
in Gravity for many years, moving to Clearfield several years ago to be near
their daughter, Mrs. Sylvester Mann. He was a man with many friends and
old comrades
who mourn his loss.

Nellie Agnes Cain -
Mrs. Nellie
Agnes Lynam, 50, wife of Joe Lynam of Corning, died at 2:30 Monday morning at the hospital in Creston. The body
was taken to Corning and funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the
Catholic church in Corning with Father Powers
officiating. Interment was in the Calvary cemetery there.
Mrs. Lynam is survived by her husband and a daughter, Gladys,
two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Mary O'Connell, of Corning; Mrs. Liney Cain and Cyrus Cain, of this city; Joe Cain, of Kent,
and Ed Cain, of Corning.

Maloney, Emma -
Emma Maloney
was born March 4, 1874 and departed this life on March 2, 1929, age 55 years.
Since the death of her mother seven years ago, she has made her home with her
sister, Mrs. Earl Smith, who lives seven miles east of Lenox. She leaves to mourn her loss three sisters,
Mrs. Earl E. Smith, Mrs. Steve Nicola, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Mrs. Clara
McGrath, of Corning, Iowa and one brother Will Maloney, of Corning, Iowa.
All was done
that loving hands and tender care could do to make her burden light in her last
days on earth and now she sleeps that sleep that knows no awakening.

Overmire,
Marl Marvin -
Marl Marvin Overmire was born December 18, 1868, in Tama county, Iowa,
and died at his home southeast of Lenox April 12, 1929, at the age of 60 years,
3 months and 25 days.
He came to
this locality with his parents November 22, 1871. Their first home was on the
Ferguson farm, where Marl grew to manhood and continued to live for a time
after his marriage.
He was
married to Maggie Amanda Henderson on July 1, 1891 To this union four children were born:
Mrs. Carl M. Laxson, of Boyne City, Mich.; Mrs. Marc
B. Earlville ;Mrs. William L. Fuehrer Wilkin of Indio, Calif. and Harold.
He united
with the Presbyterian church of Lenox on February 22, 1890 and was ordained an
elder. He was Sunday school
superintendent in 1910. All who came in
contact with his life recognized in him a commanding example of steadfast
devotion and loyalty to his Christ.
He was
preceded in death by his mother in 1911. He is survived by his devoted wife;
four children, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Overmire,
of Lenox; 12 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Hewitt, of West Chester, and Mrs Frame, of Clearfield, Mrs. Lewis Nellie Crittenden, of
Downey, Cal.; and an only brother, Mr. E. B. Johnston, of Grand Island, Nebr.
Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian church with the
pastor,
Rev. Arthur Mortenson, officiating. Interment was at Fairview
cemetery.

Reed, D. W. -
Word has
been received of the death of Dr. D. W. Reed in the hospital in Des Moines. Dr.
Reed, who was for years a practicing physician in Clearfield, is well known
throughout this section of the county.
Mrs. Lee
Wilcox, his daughter, left last week for Des Moines to be with her father.

Hannah -
Mrs. Hannah Rodenbaugh, who for the past eleven years has cared for her
brother-in-law, E. E. Rodenbaugh, died at his home
Tuesday evening at 5 o’clock. Mrs. Rodenbaugh had been ill only since Friday.
Her two
daughters, Mrs. Kittie Mohler and Mrs. Margaret Beemer, both of Dixon, Ill. are here and will take their
mother’s body back to Dixon, Ill. for burial.

Shoenhair,
Irma May –
Irma May Shoenhair was born near Kent February 25, 1913,
and died at Creston Monday, February 18, at the age of 15 years, 11 months
and 25 days. She was raised on the farm, where she lived until two years ago,
she moved from Brooks to Creston. She
finished seventh and eighth grade in Creston Junior high school. The past year she was a freshman in the Creston high
school, until three weeks preceding her death.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her parents, an older sister,
Fern; a sister June and two brothers, Russell and
Kenneth, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Interment was in the Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Weingart,
Nathan -
The Rev.
Nathan Weingart, 79, father of Dr. Julius S. Weingart, died at his home ,1043 Twenty-first street, at noon Monday. He was a minister of the United
Presbyterian church but retired several years ago.
Pneumonia and a general breakdown due to his advanced age caused his
death. The Rev. Mr. Weingart was born in Germany but came to this country
when 16. He
had served Iowa churches at Carlisle, Clearfield and Vinton. He went to Des Moines after he resigned from
the pastorate at Vinton.
His wife, the son, Dr. Weingart and two
daughters, Mrs. Edna Easter of Newton and Mrs. Gladys Thomas of Burlington
survive him.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Dunn’s funeral
home in charge of the Rev. E. Francis Hall of Deaver Avenue United Presbyterian church. –Des
Moines Register.

West, Elba Bryan -
The
following notice of the death of a former Taylor county boy is from the
Loveland. Colo., paper.
Many friends
gathered at the M. E. church in Loveland. Colo., Monday
afternoon to pay their last tribute of respect to the late Bryan West, who died
Thursday in a Denver hospital. The Rev. C. E. Albertson brought a
message of comfort to the bereaved family and beautiful vocal selections were
rendered by a quartet composed of Mrs. O. J. Vandeventer,
Miss Rosalind Huchendorf, Arthur Armstrong and E. J.
Anderson.
Mr. West
gave his life to Christ when a small boy and has always steadfastly followed
the teachings of the Christian religion.
Elba Bryan
West was born in Sharpsburg, Iowa, October 17, 1896 and died in Loveland,
Colo., January 10, 1929. He leaves a wife and two children, La Von and Cleo
June; father mother and two sisters.
He was an
honorable and progressive citizen and was known to his neighbors and friends as
having a kind word for everyone.
His death
came as a distinct shock to the community. His father and mother were unable to attend the funeral, but a sister,
Mrs. Geo Rutlege of Sharpsburg was there.
Interment was made in Loveland Burial Park and
the following were pall bearers: C.B.
Friday, George Milligan, V. V. Hartman, Claud Peak,
J. Cagg, Ross Bromfield.
The
following was read at the funeral services. His household was his realm and gild of service. His wife and two
children cherish his devotion and
sacrifice in making possible their education and other preparations for life. We quote the words of the poet He with his
companion, “Lived in the house by the side of the road and was a friend of
man.”

White, Grace Marie Eyre -
Grace Marie
Eyre-White, daughter of F. W. and Mary Eyre, was born May 9th, 1888, near
Lenox, la., and departed this life, May 10th, 1929,
being 41 years and 1 day of age at the time of her passing away at the
Community hospital
in Creston,
Iowa. Her Illness and suffering was of short duration, having been seriously
ill only a few days. All that loving friends could do, was done, but without
avail-God knows best.
Her untimely
death comes as a severe blow to her relatives and friends. When but a small
child, she was converted and with her parents, joined the Morning Star Church
near Bedford.
She was married
to Robert Newton White at New Market, la., January 14,
1912, where they lived until 1919, when they moved to a farm near Lenox and 7
years ago they moved into Lenox where they have since lived.
Grace, as
she was known to her friends and neighbors, was a good woman, ever thoughtful
of her friends and ready to lend a helping hand where she could. She was
especially devoted to her husband and the interests of her home.
Besides her
husband, she is survived by two brothers, Wilse and
Charles Eyre of Richey, Montana, and three sisters, Mrs. Susie Arthur of New
Market, Mrs. Ina Wise of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Ester Clayton of
Sharpsburg. .
Her parents
and one sister, Carrie, preceded her in death.
Brief
services were held at the home conducted by Rev. Stroud and burial was made in
the Lenox cemetery.
