Ferguson, Mary Ellen Neiderheiser –
Mary Ellen Neiderheiser, daughter of Frederick and Amelia Neiderheiser was born June 22, 1858 near Trenton, Ohio. Later
her parents moved to
Washington County, Iowa where she lived until she came to Lenox about
50 years ago. During all these
years she has been identified with the highest interests of the community and
the church.
September 8,1897 she was married at the home of her mother, in
Jefferson, Iowa, to Mr. Thomas A. Ferguson. One of the early settlers of Lenox,
Mr. Ferguson died March 4, 1934. During the years their home has exemplified
all that a Christian home stands for in the hospitality friendship and love's
ministry.
Material things were valued only as they could be used to bring cheer and
happiness to others.
From
girlhood, Mrs. Ferguson has been a devoted Christian first as a member of the
Moravian church, and for fifty years, a member of the United
Presbyterian church of Lenox where her influence will long be remembered.
For many
years she was teacher of the primary children in the Sabbath school,
and many men
and women know God better today because of her teaching and influence in their
childhood years. Her missionary passion
was a
dynamic power whether spending itself in behalf of the under privileged at home or in
other lands.
As the
eldest daughter of a widowed mother; the big sister of younger brothers and a
sister; or the devoted wife of an invalid husband, her love and the sharing of
her life was a beautiful expression of her faithfulness and fine crystal white
character. One of her Lenox friends has put into one sentence that quality
which seems to interpret her beautiful character as felt by friends and
relatives, "She was more nearly a selfless person than anyone I have ever
known.”
She is
survived by one brother, Frank F. Neiderheiser of
Columbia, Mo., her sister Anna Neiderheiser of Kansas
City, Mo., two nieces, two nephews and 15
grand nieces and
nephews, children and grandchildren of her brother Frank F. Neiderheiser.

services for Mrs. Ferguson were conducted in the First United Presbyterian
church of Lenox, Iowa by Rev. W. A. Thompson, pastor, who was assisted by Rev.
