TELLS OF FORMER TEACHER WHO DIED
RECENTLY
Two weeks
ago we carried a story of the death of Mrs. Ella Pullman, and mentioned the
fact that she had taught school around here years ago. Frank
Wilt tells
us that he is now 69 and that he went to school to Miss Pullman at Platte No. 1
in the 80's and that she was then teaching her 54th term, of
school.
A school term in those days was figured at either two or three months and there
was a fall, winter and spring term in each school year.
(Platbe No. 1 is the school across the road, north, from the
farm where Eli Wilt now lives.)
Mr. Wilt
says that in those days farm boys did not get to attend school regularly. Most
of them could go only during the winter term and many of them continued to go
to school until they were 21.
