Armstrong, J. L. -

D. C. and C. B. Armstrong received word Sunday of the death of their father, J. L. Armstrong which occurred that day at his home in Salina, Kansas. Mr. Armstrong lived in Lenox about 35 years ago and has been here often and he is quite well known to many Lenox people.

Mr. Armstrong has been in poor health for some time, He Is survived by his wife and several children. Funeral services were held at Salina Tuesday and burial made at that place. Neither of the sons were able to attend.

Baldwin, Carrie L. Baker –

Mrs. O. C. Baldwin passed away at her home Tuesday, March 18, after an illness of a few weeks. The funeral will be held at the Church of Christ this afternoon, Thursday, March 20, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. Freeman.

Baldwin, Carrie L. Baker -

Carrie L. Baker, daughter of Chester H. and Mary A. Baker, was born eptember 16, 1862 at Tishilwa, Bureau; county, Illinois, and when four years old she moved with her parents to Union county, Missouri, where she lived until 1877. They then moved to Taylor county, Iowa, where she lived until her death.

On December 25, 1881 she was united in marriage to Omer C, Baldwin. To this union were born two children: Mrs. Cora Campbell of Adams county, and Ira Baldwin of Chickasha, Oklahoma.

In 1898 Mrs. Baldwin united with the Church of Christ at Lenox, Iowa, and since that time she has been active in the service of Christ and His church She was also a member of the Relief corps.

For the last month or so Mrs. Baldwin had been in poor health but was confined to her bed only about the last two weeks. She passed away very quietly about 1:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon March 18, 1930, at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 2 days.

She is survived by two brothers, O. M. Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,

and George E. Baker of Fresno, California; three grandchildren, Leland, Willard and Chester Campbell; one great grandchild, four nieces and one nephew.

Ball, R. L. –

R. L. Ball passed away Saturday evening at his home in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Ball was a former Lenox business man, having been in the grocery business here for about forty years. After the death of his wife eight years ago, he and his family moved to California. He is survived by two daughters, and

two sons, Mrs. Mary Bosworth, Murle, Harley, and Oatis.

Brown, Mrs. J. H. -

Friends in this city have received word of the death of Mrs. J. H. Brown, widow of Dr. John H. Brown for some years pastor of the United Brethern Church at Lenox. Mrs. Brown died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and

Mrs. Frank Wilkins in Berkeley, California. While apparently in good health, she suffered a paralytic stroke which caused her death two days later. Her body was returned to Monmouth, Ill., which was the family home. There will be many in Lenox who will cherish the memory of this .good and kindly lady.

Burke, Elvina Isabelle Wiley Barns 

Elvina Isabelle Wiley Burke was born in Indiana, September 27, 1852, and died at her home in Lenox, March 22, 1930, aged 77 years, 5 months and 25 days. Death came as a relief after months of illness and infirmity.

Mrs. Burk was married to James Barns, on February 20, 1873, and to them was born one son, Hugh Barns of Lenox.

She married Mr. Burke July 3, 1881, and one daughter was born to them, Mrs. Bertha Archer, residing in Walnut, Iowa.

There are three grandchildren. Beside her son and daughter and grand-children, she is survived by one sister and two brothers: Mrs. Amer Hammock, living in California and Wesley and Lincoln Wiley of Lenox.

Moving from Indiana to Illinois,  then to Nebraska, the family finally came to Iowa some 40 years ago,  and here Mrs. Burke has since resided.

She united with the Lenox M. E. church in 1894; during the pastorate of Rev. Sparks.

Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church Monday at 2:30 p. m. by Rev. Stroud, and burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Burrell, R. T. –

R. T. Burrell, prominent Bedford attorney, died at his home Friday afternoon at 4:30 after a brief illness with pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Mr. Burrell was formerly a county

attorney of Taylor county but at the time of his death was a justice of the peace.

Carlton, Dave -

Dave Carlton died at his home in Clearfield Tuesday morning, March 4 at the age of 92 years. In 1871 he came from LaSalle County to this community, living in Lenox a number of years, later moving to Clearfield, where he has made his home ever since. He is a brother of John Carlton of this community.

John is the last one left of a family of eight children.

Ferris, Lulu Walizer

Mrs. Clyde C. Ferris was born August 9, 1884 at Baltimore, Md. and passed from this life March 17, 1930, at the age of 45 years, 7 months and 8 days.

She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. R. Walizer.

 

On November 28, 1904 she was united in marriage to Clyde C. Ferris. Beside her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Tom Walizer of Sioux City and Ed Walizer of Des Moines, and three sisters, Mrs. John Biddie of Des Moines, Mrs. J. P. Roy of California and Mrs. Mamie Emeky of Bridgeport, Kentucky.

She was a member of the Capitol Hill Church of Christ at the time of her departure.  The body was brought to Lenox for burial. Short services were conducted at the grace by Rev. Freeman.

Fewson, George –

George Fewson, a former Lenox resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Rash, at Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wednesday morning, April 9. Mr. Fewson was born May 1, 1852 and lacked but 22 days of being 78 years old.

 

His son, Pete Fewson of Clarinda, came Wednesday and made arrangements

for the funeral which will be held at the Church of Christ Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Freeman. Interment will be made in the Lenox cemetery.

Fewson, George –

George Fewson was born in Toronto Canada May 1, 1852 and he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Rask in Tulsa, Oklahoma April 9, 1930 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 8 days.  His death follows a brief illness of about a week.

George Fewson was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hanna Blackstone on June 15, 1891, to which union was born five children.  Isabell who passed away in infancy, Mrs. C. J. Rask, Tulsa, Oklahoma, P. A. Fewson of Clarinda, Edna E. Fewson, Lenox and George B. Fewson, Parkville, Missouri.

Mrs. Fewson preceded her husband in death passing away at her home in Lenox, March 31, 1915.

When a young man, Mr. Fewson united with the Episcopalian church.  He was also a member of the Tremont lodge A.F.&AM. No. 343 of Lenox, having been a member of that body for 40 years.

From the year 1880 with the exception of about 4 years which were spent in Nebraska Mr. Fewson has made his home in and around Lenox during which time he established many worthwhile friendships.

His many friends join with the relatives in mourning his death.

Filbert, Mary Celestine Paymal

Mary Celestine Payrnal, daughter of  Francis and Mary Paymal  was born in France. August 1. 1842, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Underwood near Sharpsburg. at 6:00 p. m., on April 3, 1930 at the age of 88 years, 8 months and three days after an illness of three months.

 

She came to America with her parents at the age of six years landing at New Orleans and coming by boat to Peoria. Illinois, where she grew to womanhood.

 

On October 7, 1858. she was married to J. C. Filbert at Quincy, Ill, to which union nine children were  born,  six girls and three boys.

 

Sixty-two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Filbert came to Iowa by wagon, locating on a farm nine miles west of Lenox. Mrs. Filbert spent the greater part of her life since in Taylor county. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died

sixteen years ago, and three daughters who died in infancy. Mrs. Filbert. is survived by six children, Mrs.  T. C. Olson of Ellston, Iowa, Norris Edmund of Pueblo, Colorado, John E. and Mrs. Charles Underwood of Sharpsburg. Mrs  Fred Brook of Dummer, Sask., Canada, and Frank  A. of Ellendale, N. D. Twenty-one grand-children, and twenty-four great grandchildren, and also one great great granddaughter.

The funeral services were held at the Catholic church of which Mrs, Filbert was a member Saturday, April 5, conducted by Rev. Pouget.

Gard. E. C. “Chapin” -
Word was received here Sunday of  the death of E.. C.. Chapin" Gard at his home in San Francisco, California. Mr. Gard was among the first editors of the Clearfield Enterprise, and the Gard family were old settlers here. He leaves

his wife, one son, and one daughter. The message was received by a cousin, Mrs. Thomas Bladon, who lives northeast of Clearfield

Hornaday, Katherine –

Mrs. T. J. Killion received word Friday that her grand daughter, Katherine Hornady, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hornady at Chicago was very low with meningitis.  She passed away shortly after her grandmother arrived. The

body was brought to Moulton and funeral services were held Tuesday.

T. J. Killion, and Mr. and Mrs. John Porter drove to Moulton Monday.

Keith, Joe -

Joe Keith, 65, former sheriff of Taylor county and also a former member of the board of supervisors, died at Bedford Saturday while attending a sale. His death was due to a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Keith was a democrat but was twice elected to the sheriff's office and once to the board. He is survived by his w9fe and two married daughters.

McGregor, Charles -

Charles McGregor of Creston passed away at his home Wednesday afternoon, January 29.  He lived in Lenox when he was a young man and was in business with his brother.  Later he became associated with A. McKenzie and C. W. McDonald in the furniture and undertaking and implement business which was then known as the three Macs.  Mr. McDonald retired from business and it became McKenzie and McGregor.  He acquired an interest in a furniture and undertaking business in Bedford where Mr. McGregor was located for some time and later he went to Creston where he has been in business for forty years.

Moreland, James -

James Moreland, for about fifteen years a stock-buyer in Clearfield and vicinity, died suddenly Friday night or Saturday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lyddon where he was a boarder.  He had not been at all well, but was able to be about his work the day before. Mrs. Lyddon found him «n the floor dead when she went to call him Saturday morning, April 5. He was about 61 years of age.  His relatives were hard to locate, but a cousin was finally found near Clarinda, and later his brothers and sisters were located.

He has two sisters in Pasadena, California, one of whom will be here for the funeral Wednesday morning, and one brother in Albany, Oregon, and one in Boise, Idaho.

Morgan, Martha Luella Brandon -

Creston News-Advertiser — Mrs. William Morgan, a former resident of Lenox, died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Hay of Lonkmont, California, according to word received here today. She has made her home with her daughter for several years, moving to there from Lenox.

She is survived by one daughter, two grandchildren, and one sister, in Utah.

The body will arrive in Creston Thursday morning and will be taken to McGregor Bros, and Coens chapel. Funeral arrangement will be made later.

Morgan, Martha Luella Brandon –

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Morgan were held in the Methodist church last Friday at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Arthur Henry. Mrs. Morgan was formerly a resident of this place, but for several years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Hay at Longmont, Colorado, where she died April 14. Burial took place at the Morgan cemetery.

Obituary

Mrs. Martha Luella Morgan, pioneer of Adams county, died at Longmont,

Colorado, April 14,1930. She was born at Atkinson, Henry county Illinois on July 31,1860 and came to Iowa when four years old, making her home near Lenox. She was married to William R. Morgan on January 29th, 1880. They were the parents of four children, three sons John Ivan, Ernest Clifford and

Ralph B., one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Hay, of Longmont, Colorado. The husband and three sons preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter and two grandchildren, Thelma and Robert Hay, one sister Mrs. Almira McGraw of Salt Lake City, one brother William Brandon of Corning, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was the daughter of BenjaminT. and Rhoda A. Brandon, and came to Iowa in a covered wagon. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan made a trip to Colorado hi 1880 in a covered wagon soon after their marriage.

She united with the Methodist church at Lenox when a girl and transferred her membership to Longmont when she went to make her home with her daughter. The daughter has had the privilege of being with or having her mother near all her life.

Short services were held at Shaw Memorial chapel Wednesday, April 16 at 10:00. Officiating were Rev. O. C. Donner of the Methodist church of Brighton, Colorado, and Rev. .Fred Hanger of Longmont. The funeral party left immediately after to bring the body to Iowa.   Services were held at two o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church in Kent, with Rev. Arthur

Henry officiating. Burial took place at the Morgan cemetery.

Reed, Ross Hurd

Ross Reed, who was taken to the Methodist hospital at Des Moines, last week was operated on Wednesday morning, yesterday, and passed away at 11:30 a short time after the operation. Mr. Reed is a son of Mrs. Jim Reed and has been in poor health for some time.

Reed, Ross Hurd -

Ross Hurd Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Reed, was born on a farm in Taylor county, August 27, 1879 and departed this life in the Methodist hospital at Des Moines, Iowa February 20, 1930 aged 50 years 5 months and twenty-nine days.

He was preceded in death by his father, James H. Reed, a brother, George LeRoy Reed, a sister, Adeline Reed and a baby daughter who died in infancy.  He is survived by his devoted wife, Bertha I. Wherry Reed (to whom he was united in marriage on March 14, 1900), and his mother, Mary E. Reed.

 

Ross, as he was known to his many friends and associates was kind, sympathetic and was always willing to help those in need.  During his last illness, which shocked his body with excruciating pain, he maintained a composure which few have witnessed. He had a cheerful word and a smile for each of his many friends who called to see him.

Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev. E. R. Stroud, Sunday 2:30 p.m. and burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Roberts, G. T. –

Rev. O. T. Roberts, pastor of the Methodist church at Corning passed away at the Methodist; hospital at Omaha Friday evening. He had been taken there for treatment Friday morning after becoming suddenly ill Thursday.

Beside his wife, Rev. Roberts is survived by three children, Vivian, instructor in Doane College, Crete, Nebraska; Geraldine, student at Simpson College, Indianola; and Helen, who is at home.

Rev. Roberts was serving his second yeas-as pastor of the Methodist church

at Corning.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon.

Miss Vivian Roberts taught in the Lenox schools last year.

Wright, Ellsworth -

Ellsworth Wright, who had been engaged in the jewelry business in Lenox for the past forty-two years, died at his home here early Tuesday morning. He had been in failing health all winter and had been gradually growing weaker and

weaker. He had been staying at home for the past two weeks although before that time he had been coming up to his store each day.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon, Thursday, at 2:30 at the United Presbyterian church, of which he had been a faithful member since a small boy. The services will be conducted by Rev. Crafts, who will be assisted by Rev. A. K Davidson, of Coin.

 

Ellsworth Wright was born in Prebble county, Ohio, October 5, 1862 and at the time of his death was 67 years of age.  He came with his parents to Louisa

county, Iowa, when he was four years old. In 1870 he came to Wayne county where he grew to manhood and learned the jewelry trade while working under his cousin, W. E. Dennis, at Humeston, Iowa.  In 1888 he came to Lenox

and started in the jewelry business for himself.

He was married to Adeline Douglas July 20, 1892 and to them  one child was born, Nellie, who passed away in December 1909.

Mr. Wright was a member of the Masonic fraternity for fifteen years and was a member of the Eastern Star for twelve years. He was city treasurer of Lenox for twenty-five years.

Wright.ls survived by his wife and two brothers, Will and John, of Allerton, Iowa.

Will Wright of Allerton and Clara Dunn of Rock Rapids, Ia., a sister of Mrs. Wright, came to attend the funeral.

Young, Howard -

Howard Young died at his home southwest  of Clearfield Sunday evening at about six o'clock, having passed away suddenly.  He had been very ill a few weeks ago, but was apparently much better lately He had been doing some work around the place and had just carried a basket into the house and gone out again. He was found shortly after by Mr. Scott who works in the home. Mrs. Young was out in the yard. A doctor was promptly called but pronounced him dead when he fell. Mr. Young was about sixty one years of age, and was an old settler here. He leaves his wife and one daughter, Mary; two brothers, Nelson of Powell, Wyoming and Robert, who is in California.
