Agnew, Samuel Hugh -
S. H, Agnew
died at the City Hospital hi Des Moines Sunday, February 26, as the result of
an accident in which he was struck by a car on the streets of Des
Moines about three weeks ago. The body
was brought to Lenox Tuesday and funeral services were held at the Church «f
Christ, conducted by Rev. A. L.
Davidson.
Interment
was made in the Lenox cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away ten
years ago in February. Services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic
Lodge.
Samuel Hugh
Agnew was born March 6, 1855 in Ogle county, Ill.,
where he grew to manhood on the old farm home. He finished his education at
Wheaton college in Illinois. He then taught school for
three years.
He was
married to Lottie Foster on November 18, 1880 and to them were born two sons,
Arthur Frank, who died at the age of 5½ years and Foster Hugh
who still
survives him.
In 1882 he
went to Dakota and took up a homestead where he lived for ten years when he
went to Valley City, N. Dak., and engaged in the
grain business for four years. He then moved to Coon Rapids, la.,
and continued in the, same business. He quit the business and traveled for 6½
years, making Fort Dodge his headquarters during this time.
In 1913 he
moved back to Coon Rapids and again entered the grain business for two years.
In 1915 he came to Lenox and took charge of the Hotel Lenox and made a success
of it for about ten years.
Mr. Agnew
united with the Presbyterian church where he still
held his membership at the time of his death. He was also a member of the
Masonic fraternity and of the Modern Woodmen.

After
leaving the hotel business in Lenox, Mr. Agnew made his home with his son
Foster in Des Moines. At the time of his death, Mr. Agnew was 77 years,
11 months
and 22 days of age.

Boham,
Nelson Emsely -
Nelson Emsely Boham, son of Charlie and
Alice Boham, was born near Carbon, Iowa, January 15,
1897, and departed this life at his home near Prescott, Iowa, April 6, 1933, at
the age of 36 years, 2 months and 21 days. On September 28, 1920, he was
married to Unice Sickles, and to them were born two daughters and one son.
In 1925 he
and his wife united with the Methodist church at Brooks, Iowa.
He was
preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters. He is
survived by his wife, two daughters, Lois 9, Pauline 7, and by one son,
Arthur, 6,
and three brothers, Dan of Kansas, Francis of Carbon, la., Perry of Knoxville,
la., and one sister, Mary of Brooks Iowa.
Nelson had
been enduring physical distress unknown to his friends and even to many of his
loved ones, which probably led to his tragic death. Always a devoted husband,
kind and good to his wife and children, he will be greatly missed, not only in
the home, but in the neighborhood as well.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church at Brooks, la.,
conducted by Rev. Chas. A. Colyn, pastor of the Salem
church of the Brethren, where
a large
number of relatives and friends and neighbors met to pay their last tribute to
the deceased. Burial was made in the Baldwin cemetery.
Those from a
distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Dan Boham of Kansas.

Carlton, John –
John Carlton
died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Porter Wilt, Wednesday evening about
5:30. Mr. Carlton was almost 93 years of age and had been in
feeble health for some time..

Davis, R. L. -
R. L. Davis,
father of O. L. Davis of Lenox, died at the home of his son, S. C. Davis, at
Glenwood, Tuesday, March, 21. Mr. Davis, who was 87 years of age,
slipped on some ice about 2 o'clock that afternoon and fell . About five o'clock he
passed away.
Funeral
services were held at Emerson Thursday, March 23, at 2
o'clock.
Mr. Davis
was born in West Virginia and came to Iowa at the age of 7 and settled in
Mahaska county. He spent all but 39 of his life in Iowa. In 1916 he located in Mills county where he
continued in farming, the only occupation of his lifetime.
Mr. Davis is
survived by eleven children who were all able to at attend the funeral. His
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren number 99. He has three living sisters
.

Clinton, Okla., Mrs. Stella Anderson of Ulysses, Nebr., B.N. of Lincoln, O. E.

and O. L. of Lenox.
Mr. Davis is
also survived by his wife who is 81 years of age. Her health is not good and
Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Davis were called to Glenwood Monday because of her failing
condition.

Dunn, John W. –
After three
weeks illness, John W. Dunn passed away at his home in Pomona, Calif., May 11,
1933, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and12 days. Mr Dunn was born in Knox Co, Ohio, Aug. 29, 1855. When 5
years old he came with his
parents. Nathan and Lida Dunn, to Iowa,
settling on a farm near Hawleyville where he grew to
manhood. On Feb. 18, 1877 he was married to Alice S. Casteel. To them were born six children. Clida and Maud
preceded him in
death The four
who survive are Wesley, Perry and Roscoe Dunn, all of Conway, and Mrs. Grace
Boyer of Sharpsburg, la.
Besides
these four children he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Julia E. Dunn
of Pomona,
Calif., one brother, Martin Dunn, of Mankato, Kans, 6 grand-children and one
great grandson. His first wife passed
away January
21 1911. On September 16 1914 he was married to Miss Julia E Wise.
In 1917,
because of failing health, he moved to California where he made his home until
his death.
Mr. Dunn was
a member of the First Christian church and lived a true Christian life. He was a kind father, a loving husband and
kind neighbor.
Funeral
services were held at the Todd and Reeves Funeral Parlor at Pomona, Calif. May 13.The body was shipped to Clarinda, Ia.
where services were held Friday, May 19 burial was made in the Summit cemetery,
near Yorktown, Iowa.

Essley,
O. P. -
O. P. Essley, a former Lenox man who lived on a farm north of
town until about 15 years ago, died at the home of his daughter; Mrs. Jennie
Kennedy at
Long Beach, Calif., April 21, according to word received by
relatives here this week. Mr. Essley was around 80 years of age and was ill only three days before his death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday April 24, and the body will be brought to Lenox for
burial about May 15.

Mrs. Jennie
Kennedy of Long 3each, Calif., arrived in Lenox Wednesday evening accompanying
the body of her father, O. P. Essley which was
brought
here for burial.
Short services will be held at the Arnold Funeral Home this morning, Thursday,
at 10:30. Mr. Essley, who moved away from here some
fifteen years ago, died at Long Beach April 21.

Mary –
Mrs. Mary Fabritz, mother of Mrs. Chas
Schmitt, died at the home of her daughter in Chicago last Friday. Funeral services were held in Ottumwa
Monday. Mrs. Fabritz has been in poor health for a long time.

Finn, Mary Ann Brown –
Mrs. R. D.
Finn died at her home in Lenox about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening, at the age of
93 years. Her 93rd birthday was last July 4 and Mrs. Finn was the oldest woman
in Lenox.
No time has
been set for funeral services at this time.
Mrs. Finn is
survived by six sons and one daughter: Mary L. Finn, Ed Finn, A. J. Finn of Jefferson, Iowa, P. H. Finn, James Finn of El
Reno, Okla., W. C. Finn of Seattle, Wash., and Geo. Finn of Telegraph Creek,
Canada.
Mrs. Finn
had been in poor health for some time past and her death had been expected
momentarily during the last week.

Ann Brown –
Mary Ann Brown, daughter of Wm. and Hanora Brown, was born in Troy, N. Y., July 4, 1841, and died at her home in Lenox,
Iowa, March 29, 1933, at the age
of 93 years, 8 months and 25 days.
At the age of 18 she was married to Richard Finn at her home
in New York.
Mr. and Mrs. Finn
moved to Iowa and settled in Allamakee county in 1865.
In 1875 they moved to a farm 9 miles south east of Lenox where they made their
home until 1893 when they moved to Lenox. Mrs. Finn made her home here
continuously until her death.
She is survived by 7 children: P. H. Finn of Des Moines,
James Finn of El Reno, Okla., William Finn of Seattle, Wash., George Finn of
Telegraph Creek, British
Columbia, Canada, Ambrose
Finn of Jefferson, Edward and Lizzie Finn of Lenox. She is also survived by 24 grand children and 12 great grandchildren.
Her husband and 3 sons preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's church Friday
morning, March 31st, at 9 o'clock conducted by Father Pouget.
Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Gard,
Guy -
Guy Gard of Clearfield died Tuesday morning in the Veterans'
hospital in Excelsior Springs Missouri, where he had been for several weeks
taking treatment. Guy had been ill for
several years. He was a World War veteran
and his work in
the service caused his illness. He is survived by his wife, one sister, Mrs.
Hattie Bladon and other relatives.

Grayden, Mrs. –
Mrs. George
Ferguson, sr., received a telegram from Alberta, Canada, of the death of her
sister, Mrs. Grayden. They left Lenox about twenty eight years ago to make their home in
Canada. She will be remembered in Lenox by many friends.

Hamilton, Dott Tyler -
O. D. Tyler
received word last Friday of the death of his youngest sister, Mrs. Holland J.
Hamilton, who will be remembered as Miss Dott Tyler.
Her girlhood
was spent in
Lenox where she graduated from the high school. In 1905 she was married and
went with her husband to make her home in Chicago, later removing to
Bronxville, N. Y., where she died. She is survived by her husband and two
daughters, her mother, Mrs. H. H. Tyler of Des Moines, three sisters,
Mrs. W. E. McCullock of Los Angeles, Mrs. W. H. Vaughn and Mrs. Grant McPherrin of Des Moines, three brothers, O. D. Tyler of
Lenox, E. A. Tyler of Des Moines, and H. H. Tyler of Oklahoma.

Hinkhouse,
J. S. –
The Rev. J. S. Hinkhouse, 74, retired Presbyterian pastor, died at Wilton Junction, la., Monday, May8. At the
time of his death he was stated clerk of snyod of Iowa
and stated clerk of the Dubuque presbytery.
Pastorates
served by Rev. Hinkhouse included Lenox, Audubon,
Monticello, and Sioux City. He was
formerly connected with Parsons college in Fairfield
and once served as president of Lenox college at Hopington.
Rev. Hinkhouse is survived by his wife and five children. They
are Mrs. E.K. Mates of Iowa City, E. P. Hinkhouse of
Wilton Junction, Paul M. Hinkhouse of New
Jersey, Fred J. Hinghouse of Fairfield and Mrs. K. M. Baarbjerge of Copenhagen,
Denmark.

Hull, Florence –
Mrs.
Florence Hull died at Taylor, North Dakota on Friday of last week, following an
illness of several months. She was the
mother of Leslie Hull, a former Time Table employee and spent one winter in
Lenox with her son. Mrs. Hull made many
friends here who have remember her during the last two years.
Funeral
services were held in the Lilly Funeral Home in Des Moines Saturday afternoon
at 3:30 and interment was made in Woodland cemetery.

Manroe,
Emma Ophelia Cunningham -
Emma Ophelia
Cunningham, daughter of Susan and Albert Cunningham was born in Dewitt county, Illinois, November 17, 1859. In 1876 she was married
to Francis Leroy Manroe and to this union twelve
children were born; eight of whom survive their mother.
The husband
and father proceeded her in death in January, 1912.
In 1892, at
the age of 33 Mrs. Manroe united with the Christian
church of Lenox and was baptized by Rev. Mattox, during the ministry of Rev.
Painter.
This made
her one of the first members of the local church as it was organized in 1890.
Mrs. Manroe has been a citizen of Lenox for the past 57 years.
She was a loving and devoted mother and a friend to all. Hers was a patient
nature and even during her recent illness was always appreciative of all one
did for her.
She has been
in failing health for years. Her last illness seemed to come on her about
Christmas time and she has been gradually failing. She became bedfast about 3
weeks ago. Her condition grew steadily worse till she passed away early Monday
morning, April 17 at 3:25 a. m., at the age of 73 years and 5 months.
She is
survived by 8 children, John, Ben and Jennie at home; Roy, Fred, and Mrs.
Bessie Hass of Lenox; Mrs. Dolly Turman of Nodaway;
and Mrs. Mae Munson of Des Moines. Twenty nieces and nephews;
twenty five grand-children and six great grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.

Martin, Mary -
Mary Martin
died at her home in Bedford Tuesday evening and funeral services will be held
this morning (Thursday) at 9 a. m. at the St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lenox.
During her
early girlhood Miss Martin taught at Bedford. Later she taught in rural schools
near Lenox and then in 1885 she began teaching in the first grade of the Lenox
school and continued in that position until 1925 making a total of 40 years in
the one school.
Miss Martin
had no close relatives. Her age was 69
years, 8 months and 3 days.
