Abernathy, Grant Ray –

Grant Ray Abernathy, son of Mrs. M. E. Abernathy of Lenox, and brother of Fred Abernathy, died in his home in Chicago, Ill. Monday February 27 at the age of 64 years.  He was born October 14, 1884.

 

Funeral services will be held in the Barber Funeral home in Lenox Friday afternoon, March 2, conducted by the Rev. F. J. Robbins.  Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery.

Abernathy, Grant Ray –

Grant Ray Abernathy, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Abernathy was born October 14, 1884 at Lenox, Ia., and passed away Feb. 27 at his home in Chicago, Ill.

 

The early years of his life were spent in Lenox where he attended the Lenox public school.  Before reaching the teen years he began learning the barber trade, following this trade until his death.

 

On August 28, 1911, he was married to Delia Frantum. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Reedy, one granddaughter, his mother Mrs.

Elizabeth Abernathy of Lenox; one sister, Ruth, a brother Fred, both of Lenox and also another brother.

 

His father preceded him in death eleven years ago and less than a year ago he mourned the loss of his youngest brother, Harry.

 

For the past fourteen years he has been a resident of Chicago where he cultivated many friends.

 

Ray was in ill health for the past two years. Two weeks prior to his death, he became the victim of influenza, complications developed and all efforts to save his life were futile.

 

His body was brought to Lenox and funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the Barber Funeral Home. Services were conducted by Rev. Robins and interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Alexander, Leta Marie McNichols -

Mrs. Leta Alexander passed away at the Greater Community hospital in Creston at 11:15 Wednesday morning after a months illness. Mrs. Alexander was taken to the hospital Sunday morning and underwent an operation there Monday morning.

 

Funeral services will be held at the Barber Funeral home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Alexander, Leta Marie McNichols -

Funeral services for Mrs. Leta Alexander were held at the Christian church Friday afternoon, Feb. 10 at 2:00 in charge of the Rev. E. F. Hagee. Her death came in the Greater Community hospital In Creston on Feb. 8 at the age cf 41 years, 7 months and 8 days.

 

Obituary

Miss Leta Marie McNickols was born July 1, 1897, at Osceola, la. She was the fourth child of Mr and Mrs. M. G. McNickols. At the age of 16 she joined the

Christian church and at the age of 18 she began to practice nursing in the Creston hospital. She later decided to take a course from the Chicago School of Nursing, graduating from that institution.  She followed that profession for a number of years.

 

Being a woman who loved her home and her family, and who wanted to be at home, she took up the profession of Beauty Culture so that she could practice

that profession in her home. Mrs Alexander was therefore, a licensed beauty operator which profession she practiced; until her death. At the time of her

death she was operating her shop here known as the Leta Marie Beauty Shoppe.

 

On September 12, 1917, she was united in marriage to Ernest Alexander of Lenox. To this union two sons were born, Karmon, who is now 20 and Eugene, 16 years of age.

 

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. McNickols of Murray; four brothers, Joel and Albert of Murray, Ed of Creston and Bill of Waukegan, Ill., one brother, Harry, died Oct. 3, 1937; two sisters, Cora McNickols of Creston and Mrs. Rose Crew of St. Joseph, Mo., and her two sons, Karmon and Eugene.

Bassett, Jennie L. Clark -

Mrs. Jennie L. Bassett passed away Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. F. Badgett at Corning. She suffered a heart attack shortly after noon and

passed away at 3:45. She was 79 years old.

 

She is survived by five sons and two daughters, Roy and Orval of Lenox; Earl, Ray and Clarence and Mrs. R. F. Badgett of Corning; and Mrs. Stella Griecian of California.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Federated church in Corning.

Bassett, Jennie L. Clark -

Mrs. Jennie Bassett died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Badgett, at Corning following a heart attack which occurred about 1

p. m. Mrs. Bassett had not been well for several years but had been able to be about most of the time.

 

Funeral services were held from the Federated church last Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. W. H. Guest. Burial was made in the Walnut Grove cemetery.

 

Jennie I. Clark, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Clark, was born in Canada, Sept. 23, 1859. She was 79 years, five months and three days old.

When she was one year old the family came to Linn County, Iowa, near Cedar Rapids. She was married to Samuel H. Bassett, Feb. 27, 1879 and had she

lived until Monday, she would have experienced her 60th wedding anniversary. In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Bassett came to Fayette County, Iowa, and to Adams County in the spring of 1903. The farm on which they located was

part of the Icarian Colony and they resided there until they retired and moved to Corning in 1919.

 

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, six boys and two girls. Thomas, the eldest son died in infancy.  The living children are Roy and Orville

of Lenox; Earl, Ray, Clarence and Mrs. Robert Badgett of Corning; and Mrs. Stella Grecian of Eureka, Calif. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren

and three great-grandchildren, two brothers, George and John Clark of Ely, la., and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Linda Clark, wife of the late David Clark; also many nieces and nephews and a great number of friends who grieve with the family.

 

Mrs. Bassett was a member of the Presbyterian church from early childhood, and of later years has been identified with the Federated church of Corning.

She was a long time member of the Woman's Relief Corp, the Rebecca Lodge and the Taka Art Club.

 

Since the death of her husband, April 18, 1923, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Badgett, where she died, and part of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Grecian in California, where she spent a number of winters.

Baum, David A. -

David A. Baum, founder and president of the Baum Iron Co. of Omaha died there Monday of pneumonia. Mr. Baum was a member of the firm of Baum

& Gaines which dealt heavily in land in this section of the country during and immediately after the war. All the land the company owned was sold except the farm now occupied by C. E. Gaines.

Mrs. Baum, who was also stricken with pneumonia, is believed recovering.

Bubb, Lonnie Alexander -

Lonnie Alexander Bubb died at his home in Lenox early Monday morning. Death was thought to have been caused by heart disease. Mr. Bubb awakened at the usual time and seemed to be well, but before he could get out of bed had died.

 

Mr. Bubb was born April 15, 1882, at Lenox.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church. Services at the grave will be in charge of the Masonic fraternity.

Bubb, Lonnie Alexander -

Lon Bubb, second son of Jessie and Levi Bubb, was born on a farm in Adams County, Iowa, on the 15th day of April, 1882, and departed from this life at

his home in Lenox, February 20, 1939, at the age of 56 years, 10 months and 5 days.

 

Mr. Bubb spent his entire life in the vicinity of Lenox and became a well known and respected citizen. On December 24, 1907, he was united in marriage to Miss Elsie Einfeldt and settled on his paternal homestead where

he remained for 15 years. Ten children were born to this home, eight of whom still survive. One son Everett and one daughter Lela, preceded him in death.  

 

At the age of 15 years, he united with the Presbyterian church of Lenox and ever remained a faithful member, having at one time served as elder. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge of Lenox.

 

About 17 years ago, he left the farm and came to Lenox where he lived with his family, until the time of his sudden departure last Monday morning.

 

Mr. Bubb is survived, by his wife and eight children, Leonard, Donald, Lola, Dorthea, Irma and Harlan, all of Lenox; Mrs. Lester Hines of West Liberty,

Iowa; and Clara of Omaha. Four grand children also survive, one grand child, Robert Dale Bubb, having preceded him in death. He also leaves four brothers, Oren and George of Los Angeles, Calif. and Ed of Orchard, Nebraska.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Stringtown cemetery.  Services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic fraternity.

Bunn, A. J. -

A. J. Bunn, 76, a Union county farmer for many years, died suddenly at his home in Cromwell early Tuesday morning. He was taken suddenly ill after doing his morning chores, although he had been in good health.

 

Mr. Bunn was born May 4, 1862, at Maryville, Mo. His wife died March 1, 1934.

 

Mr. Bunn is survived by the following sons and daughters: Norris Bunn, Lenox; Mrs. Charity Bowman, Cameron, Mo.; John Bunn, New Richmond, Minn.; Clinton Bunn, Marshalltown; Mrs. Jennie Riley, Nevada, la.; Dale Bunn, Kent; Eugene Bunn, Cromwell; Glen Bunn, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Helen

Pennsten of Ohio, and Mrs Ruth Simpson, Ackworth, la.

 

Funeral services were held Thursday at ,2 o'clock in the Congregational Church at Cromwell.

Case, Hariett

Harriett Case, 17, daughter of A. R. Case, died at Plattsmouth, Nebr., Feb. 15, following an illness of several days. Miss Case, one of the most popular girls in

the Plattsmouth High School, was a member of the senior class and had been elected president of her class. She was prominent in school affairs, especially debating.

 

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. John's Catholic church in Plattsmouth and the body was brought to Lenox for burial at the side of her mother.

Chenoweth, Mary Margaret Matzen

Mary Margaret Matzen was born December 15, 1879, at Coal Valley, Ill., and died February 3, 1939, at Des Moines at the age of 59 years, one months and 18 days.

 

When she was 12 years old she united with the Methodist church of Lenox and remained a Christian until the time of her death.

 

On Dec. 25, 1899, she was married to A. B. Chenoweth, and to them two sons were born Knealson and Joe, both of whom preceded the mother in death

 

She is survived by her husband two sisters, Mrs. Vera Jones of Creston, Mrs. Anna Harris of Mt Olive, Ill., and one brother, Wm. Matsen of Carroll, Mo.

 

Funeral services were held at the Barber funeral home in Lenox, Saturday, Feb. 4, conducted by the Rev. F. J. Robins. Interment was made in Shannon City cemetery.

Cherrington, Frank D. -

Frank D. Cherrington, 69, died Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at his farm three and a half miles southwest of Lenox where he had lived for the past three years after moving here from near Cromwell.

 

Funeral services were at the Barber Funeral Home at 1:30 Tuesday and at the Cromwell Congregational church at 2:30. Burial was made at Cromwell.

 

Mjt. Cherririgtqn is survived by his wife and two sons, Delmar of Raymondsville, Texas, and Loren of Oklahoma City.

Cresswell, Ethel –

Byron Cresswell attended the funeral of his cousin, Miss Ethel Cresswell, at Lorimor, Tuesday. Mrs. Hugh Cresswell of Council Bluffs and Robert Cresswell of Grand Island, Nebr., were also present.

Miss Cresswell, who was 61 and a retired teacher, was born at Cromwell. She died Sunday at her home in Oelwein, Iowa.

Hall, Grace Maulsby -

Mrs. Grace Hall, wife of Ira A. Hall, was born August 7, 1874, to Irwin and Panthia Maulsby who then lived at Redfield, Iowa. Shortly after Mrs. Hall graduated from high school her parents moved to Des Moines where

she entered Drake University and later graduated from that institution.

 

Mrs. Hall became a resident of Lenox upon her marriage to Ira A. Hall, March 24, 1903. The next seven years of her married life were spent here, where she was an active member of the Christian church. In 1910 they moved to Des Moines where she united with the University Church of Christ to which she has been actively devoted until illness prevented her devotion. She passed away December 25, 1938, at the home of George Cheese in Lenox.

 

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. F. Hagee Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Arnold Funeral home. Burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Leach, Julia –

Chas. Leach left Monday evening for Burlington, Wisc, to attend the funeral of his niece Miss Julia Leach of that place.  Miss Leach was killed in an automobile-train accident Monday morning, enroute to the school where she teaches.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon.

Luton, Elsie -

The following article telling of the death of Mrs. Elsie Luton, who formerly lived on a farm near here, was taken from the Clarinda Herald Journal:

 

"Mrs. Elsie Luton, who came from her home at Conway several weeks ago to live with her daughter, Mrs. Fred Wheeler, died shortly afternoon Wednesday.

She had suffered a stroke and lay in a critical condition early Thursday morning until the time of her death.

 

The funeral is being held in Clarinda at the Wheeler home with Rev. C. M. Eppard, Christian church minister in charge. Burial is to be made In Lenox,

where her husband, Edward Luton, was buried nearly 14 years ago.

 

"Mrs. Luton, who was 81 years old, has made her home in Conway for recent years, although coming about a year ago to live with the Wheelers. The home was formerly on a farm near Lenox.

 

"Her son, Albert Luton, has been visiting in the home, coming from Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada, several weeks ago for his annual vacation.”

Meier, Minnie –

Mrs. Walter Stapleton was called to Burlington by the death of her mother, Mrs. Minnie Meier on Dec. 30, 1938.

 

Mrs. Meier made her home with Mrs. Stapleton for about two years and had made a lot of friends in Lenox. Her husband preceded her in death eight years ago. Mrs. Meier had been in failing health since last January. In August of last year she returned to Burlington and there passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. Wasson, Friday, Dec. 30 at 5:00 a. m.

 

She is survived by three sons, Frank of Burlington, Walter and Joseph Jr., of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Stapleton of Marshalltown, Mrs.

Elsie Wasson of Burlington and Mrs. Goldie Stapleton of Lenox; also three grandchildren survive.

 

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 2 at 10:00 a. m. at Prughs Chapel. Interment was made in the Aspen Grove cemetery.

Peak, Ben –

Ben Peak, long time blacksmith and implement dealer of Kent; died at his home Friday morning, Dec. 16,

 

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Kent in charge of the Rev. R. V. Felt of Prescott also pastor of the Kent church. Burial was made in the Cromwell cemetery. Services at the grave were in charge of the Tremont Lodge, A.F. & A. M., of Lenox, of which he was a member.

 

Obituary

Ben Peak, son of Mordika and Margaret Peak, was born in Industry, Ill., on Oct. 27, 1856, and died Dec. 16, 1938, at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 19 days.

 

In 1867 he came to Union county where he has since resided. On March 10, 1886, he was united in marriage to Ellen Jane Vess, who preceded him in death Dec. 6, 1922. To them were born three sons and three daughters Roy E of Ferris, Calif.; Herbert B., Bremerton, Wash.; and Lester H., Kent; Mrs. Willis W. Fogle and Mrs. Lyle Proud, both of Kent and Mrs. Eugene Brotherton of Creston. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Ella Blosser of Cromwell, Mrs. Eva Petrie of Arispe and William who lives in Idaho

 

On coming to Kent in 1884 he engaged in the blacksmithing business and some years later added farm implements, in which business he continued for many years.

 

He was a member of the Methodist church since 1895. He was also a member of the Lenox Masonic Lodge and the Kent Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Stansell, Lotta Smith -

Mrs. Tom Stansell, 58, sister of Mrs. L. B. Anderson, died at her home at Osceola Sunday. She had been in poor health for about two years. Funeral

services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at Osceola.

 

Mrs. Stansell was born and reared on a farm 6½ miles east of Lenox and will be remembered by many people in Lenox as a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

D. N. Smith. She is survived by her husband, six children, two brothers and two sisters.

Wilson, Rebecca Elizabeth Miles –

Funeral services for Mrs. Wilson, who died Saturday morning December 10, were held at the Methodist church Monday, Dec 12, in charge of the Rev. Robins. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

 

Rebecca Elizabeth Miles, daughter of Wm. and Elizabeth Miles, was born Oct. 5, 1861, at West Branch, la., where she grew to womanhood. She was a

birthright member of the Quaker church. Since 1915 she has been a devoted member of the Methodist church.

 

On May 27, 1882, she was married to Frank E. Wilson, and to this union were born seven children. They are: Mabel Rupe, Bertha Maharry and Gerald

Thomas, all of Lenox; Bert R., Shenandoah; Nelle Butler of Sharpsburg; Fred E., Lake Crystal, Minn.; and Thomas Richard who died in infancy. Seven

grandchildren, also survive: Laura and Carl Rupe, Genevieve Hughes, Kathleen Maharry, Hazel Butler, and Dorotha and Mildred Wilson; and one sister, Mrs. Della Hargrave.

 

Her early married life was spent on a farm in Johnson county, Iowa from which place the moved to Adair County and located on a farm near

Greenfield. They moved to Lenox in 1915 and have lived in or near here since that time.
