Abernathy, Harry V. -
Funeral
services will be held here Thursday afternoon, March 31, at the Barber Funeral
Home, for Harry V. Abernathy, 46, who died at his home at Lake View, la., Monday, March 28. The services will be in charge of the
Rev. E. F. Hagee. Interment will be made in the Lenox cemetery and
will be in charge of the local post of the American Legion.
Mr.
Abernathy is a son of Mrs. M.E. Abernathy and a brother of Fred Abernathy. A
complete obituary will be printed next week.

Abernathy, Harry V. -
Harry V.
Abernathy, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Abernathy, was born at Lenox, la., June 22, 1891, and died March 28, 1938 at the Cherokee
hospital. His father died ten years ago.
In 1918, he
was in the U. S. army for a short time, being honorably discharged on account
of physical disability.
For the past
several years Mr. Abernathy was in business at Lake View, la.,
where he had many friends.
He is
survived by his mother, three brothers and one sister. Funeral services were
held Thursday, March 31, at the Barber Funeral home in Lenox,
conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee, who used the lesson story
from St. John 11:11, and John 11:36 as a text.
Services at
the grave in the Lenox cemetery were in charge of the American Legion.

Alexander, Hannah Virginia Mincer –
Hannah
Virginia Mincer, daughter of Mary Madgaline Donnehou and James Mincer,
was born near New Sharon, Iowa, March 4, 1858, and died April 1,
1938, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. A. Colyn of near Corning, at the age of 80 years, 27 days.
She was
married to John Alexander of Pontoosic, Ill., on Dec
18, 1884, and to them were born three children, Kate, Murl, Nora Magnolia and James Roy. One
daughter died ten years ago. Since the death of her husband, two years ago, she has made
her home with her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Colyn, who,
with her brother Roy Alexander of Allerton, survives.
Mrs. Alexander is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Estella Shaffer of
Oskaloosa, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs.
Alexander was a member of the Church of the Brethern and was a faithful attendant at the services.
Mrs.
Alexander was taken ill with a cold last week which was followed by a severe
heart attack, which was the cause of her death at 2 a. m., April 1. The body
was taken to Prairie City, her old home, and funeral services were held there,
Sunday at 1:30, conducted by Elder I. W. Buckingham, an old friend,
who was
assisted by his son, the Rev. Ben Buckingham. Burial was made in the cemetery
at Monroe, la., beside the bodies of her husband and
daughter.

Brown, Julia Belle Clifford -
Mrs. E. L.
W. Brown, wife of Dr. Brown of Clarinda, suffered a stroke while driving her
car on the streets of Clarinda last Thursday and passed away at
the Brown
hospital at 2 o'clock that afternoon. The Clarinda Herald-Journal tells the
story of the death of Mrs. Brown, who had visited a number of times in Lenox.
Quite
suddenly and without warning, says the Herald-Journal, Mrs. E. L. W. Brown
passed away at 2 p. m. this Thursday, afternoon, from a stroke which
seized her unexpectedly earlier in the morning, while driving their car. She had presence
of mind to stop the car, which was noticed by several standing on Grant street, just north of the high school building within half a
block of the Brown hospital, where she was going. Someone looking in the car
saw Mrs.
Brown
slumped over the wheel of the car, and called officer A. O. Davison who drove the car to the hospital where she passed away.
Mrs. Brown's
son, George Rickard, arrived from Omaha twenty minutes before his mother died
from cerebral hemorrhage. Her maiden
name was Julia Belle Clifford. Besides the son and bereaved husband, Mrs Brown leaves two sisters and four brothers. Her age was
58.
Funeral
arrangements had not been completed as we go to press; but it Is likely interment will be in her former home at Eldorado,
Kansas.
Five years ago
Dr. and Mrs. E L. W. Brown came to Clarinda starting the hospital, which they
have operated so efficiently. Mrs. Brown
seemed entirely
well earlier in
the morning. Their home being 311 S. 18th street where she had gone
to get some things for the hospital which she was bringing back, intending to
rest in the afternoon, preparatory to taking part on the program of her
missionary society Thursday evening.

Case, Nora Ryan -
Mrs. Albert
Case, formerly Nora Ryan, daughter of the late Margaret Ryan, died May 12,
1938, at Plattsmouth, Nebr. Funeral services were held at Plattsmouth,
Saturday, and the body was brought to Lenox. The casket
was opened at
the Catholic church, Saturday, and short services were held at the Lenox
cemetery.
Mrs. Case
was born January 11, 1888, and was married to Albert Case January 11, 1915. To
them were born seven children, Lucille, Joseph, Eileen, Harriett,
Richard and Geraldine. One child died in infancy.
She is survived also by six sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Mary House,
Clearfield, Mrs. Otto Hartman,
Fairfield, Mrs. Sylvan Wilson, Fairfield, Mrs. Agnes Ryan, Gary,
Ind., Dan Ryan, Lenox, Dennis Ryan, Corning, Jim Ryan, Palisade, Minn. Her brothers and
sisters,
except Jim, were at her bedside.

Chaney, Charles Edwin -
Charles
Edwin, son of John and Elizabeth Chaney, was born near Corning, Iowa, June 22,
1873 and died April 8, 1938, at his home in Clearfield at the age of 64 years,
9 months and 16 days.
He received
his education from the school at Brooks, Iowa, and as he grew into manhood
chose the trade of blacksmith and became an efficient worker in the shops.
On November
18, 1900 he was married to Minnie Richards of Brooks. They began their life's
journey together at Long Branch, Iowa. After removal to
Sharpsburg
and Blockton, Mr. Chaney decided to bring his family
to Clearfield, where he lived the remainder of his life.
Five
children were born, Alice Hargin, who proceeded her father in death March 17, 1934, Herman and
Robert of Clearfield, Walter of Santa Monica, Calif. and Hazel Hargen of Conway.
Mr. Chaney
was always honest in his dealing and courteous to his customers. He was a kind neighbor and a loving husband
and father. Two years ago he was
compelled by ill health to retire and was an invalid the greater part of the
time. His last great suffering however
was of less than a day’s duration.
He is survived
by his wife, three sons, one daughter, five grandchildren, one brother John W.
of Los Angeles, Calif., four sisters, Belle Chaney, Dolly
McRae and
May Inman of Santa Monica, Calif., and Mollis Whilock of Eldon, Mo. and Ralph Johnson, a nephew, who made
his home with Mr. and Mrs
Chaney for a number of years.

Cole, James Edwin –
James Edwin
Cole died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grey last Friday, following an
illness of several weeks. Mr. Cole who
was born Jan. 1, 1842 in Plymouth, England, was past 96 years of age at the
time of his death on April 29, 1938. He
was married to Ellen M. Horne on December 28, 1874, and one son, W. H. Cole of Omaha, Nebr. was
born to them. Mrs. Cole passed away in
June 1933.
Mr. Cole
moved to America in 1880 and located in Conway and has made his home in Taylor
ever since. Besides his son he is
survived by one grandson, Richard G. Cole of Austin, Texas.
Funeral
services were held Sunday at the Arnold Funeral home in charge of Rev. R. M.
Fagan. Burial was made in Conway.

Forsythe, J. E. –
J. E.
Forsythe, 85 years old, died at his home in Peru, Neb. April 13, after a short
illness. Mr. Forsythe was postmaster and
merchant here for several years seventeen years ago. He is survived by a daughter and three sons,
Mrs. O. S. Neal, Omaha, L. R., Omaha, H. R. of Long Beach, Calif., and W. A. of
Peru, Neb. Funeral services were held
Thursday at 2 o’clock at Peru.

Joe –
Joe Hansell of Creston died at his home in Creston, Monday,
April 18. Mr. Hansell lived in Clearfield several
years ago. He was 81 years of age. Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church Thursday. Interment was in the Clearfield
cemetery.

Jones, Pete W. –
Pete W.
Jones, formerly of Lenox, died at his home at Green River, Utah, April 19. Mr.
Jones, who was an early settler around here, moved to Utah in 1908. He is
survived by five children. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. J. A. Jones of
Lenox.

Maharry,
M. M. -
Funeral
services for M. M. Maharry were held at Green River,
Utah, Saturday, April 30, at the Presbyterian church,
conducted by the Rev. George Peacock.
Burial was
made in the Green River cemetery.
Mr. Maharry was born August 24, 1859, at Aledo, Ill., and died
April27, 1938, at the age of 78 years. He was the son of Alex and Isabel
Clements Maharry While he was a young man the family
moved to Iowa.
Mr. Maharry was married to Sarah J. Cook on Feb. 12, 1884, at
Little York, Ill. After moving to Iowa the family lived for several years in
the vicinity of Lenox. In 1910 Mr. Maharry moved to Utah and made that state his home for the
past 28 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Green River.
Mr. Maharry is survived by his wife, four sons and one
daughter, Mrs. Aria Beebee of Price, Utah, Lou C. of
Green River, Chas. A. of Tule Lake, Calif., Cecil
M. and Frank
I. of Lenox, all of whom were present at the funeral.

Matheny, Ina B. –
Matheny, William W. –
Mr. and Mrs.
Will Matheny, 65 and 63, died Sunday morning at the Greater Community hospital
in Creston, as a result of an accident at their home in Blockton that morning. Their daughter Ida, 26, was also burned but was able to leave the
hospital Sunday morning.
Mr. Matheny
was attempting to start a fire in the cook stove and picked up a jar he thought
contained kerosene and poured the contents into the fire, The
jar contained a
cleaning fluid, naphthalene, and the resulting explosion blew Mrs. Matheny onto
the porch, while her husband ran out of the house with his
clothing afire. Neighbors went to Mr. Matheny's aid. His clothing was so badly burned it
fell away as he was lifted.
Damage to
the house is said to be slight.

McGowan, Guy E. –
Word has been
received here of the sudden death of Guy McGowan, former Lenox druggist, who
passed away suddenly at his home at Marshalltown, Iowa, where he and Mrs.
McGowan had been living for the past year or two. No father particulars of his
death have been received.

McGowan, Guy

The
following facts concerning Guy E. McGowan were taken from the Clearfield
Enterprise: Guy E. McGowan was born March 25, 1891 at Ansley,
Nebr., and was the son of J. T. and Delia McGowan. He spent his early life on
the farm near Ansley. He was married, March 11, 1911, to Miss Nellie Dady at
Mount Ayr. Following his marriage he took up the study of
pharmacy at Fremont, Nebr. and made that his life's work. The McGowan family lived at
Clearfield
for ten years, then moved to Lenox where he operated a
drug store for five years. He located at
Marshalltown, la. last September, and died there
Sunday, May 8, of heart disease with which he had been ill for
about a week.
He is
survived by his wife and one daughter, Winona, who is graduating as a nurse
from the Lincoln, Nebr., general hospital, May 26. Besides his wife and
daughter he
is survived by his father, J. T. McGowan of Ansley,
Nebr., and two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Mattley of
Columbus, Nebr., and Mrs. H. T. Jackson of Cedar
Rapids. Mr. McGowan was a member of the Christian church.

L. W.
Messier, born April 16, 1871, passed away at his home in Beaconsfield, April 8,
1938. He leaves to mourn his passing, a son Ralph of Beaconsfield and a
daughter Beulah, of Des Moines. Burial

Morse, Wesley William -
Wesley
William Morse, aged citizen of Clearfield, died here Saturday at 6
o’clock. He had been in failing health
for some time but it wasn't thought to be
serious.
Mr. Morse had lived around Clearfield most of his life. For the last 40 years he had made his home in
Clearfield. He was the last of a family of 9
children,
his mother dying when he was 3 weeks old. Mr. Morse was 81 years, 8 months and
8 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the Crett funeral home and interment was made in the Rose Hill
cemetery at Mt. Ayr.

Pegg,
Agnes H. Donaldson –
Mrs. William Pegg died at her home in Lenox at 10 o'clock last
Thursday morning. Funeral services were held at the Arnold Funeral home
Saturday and
burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.
Agnes H.
Donaldson, daughter of David .and Ellen Coulter Donaldson, was born near
Glasgow, Scotland, and died at her home in Lenox, la.,
on April 28, 1938. When she was four
years old the family moved to America and settled at LaSalle, Ill. where they
lived for eight years before moving to Taylor county where she spent the
remainder of her life. She was married on Oct. 19, 1892, to William Pegg.
No children
came to this home but Mrs. Pegg was almost a mother
to all of her brothers and sisters, she being the eldest, of a family of eight
children and
always took an interest in their welfare all her life.
Besides her
husband she is survived by two brothers and two sisters, and a number of
nephews and nieces who will sadly miss Aunt Agnes. Two
brothers and one sister preceded her in death. No words of eulogy or praise
need be said
of her to those who knew her as she was—always willing and ready to help those
who were in need around her.
Mrs. Pegg was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Smith, Sina -
Mrs. Sina Smith of Clearfield, passed
away at her home Tuesday night, April 5. She had a stroke Monday night, after
which she never regained consciousness. She was found lying on the floor by Mrs. Clem Ruby Tuesday morning. She
was quite advanced in age and had not been strong for some time.
Funeral services was held at the Methodist church Friday, April 8, conducted by Rev.
McKenzie. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Dr. R. A.
Swanson who had been a Chiropractor in Creston for more than 25 years died
Thursday in the hospital at Iowa City where he had been since
taking ill last August. Funeral services were held in Creston Monday afternoon at the Dietrick and Keating chapel. Those from Lenox who attended the
funeral were Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Bassett, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Young and Iva, Eli Wilt and Mrs Chas. Case.

Wheeler, Olivette Caplinger -
Mrs. Olivette Caplinger Wheeler of
Portland, Ore., died April 2, 1938. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Caplinger. Her father was a soldier in
the Mexican War and was a sergeant in the Civil War and was one of the earliest
settlers of Taylor county.
Mrs. Wheeler
was born in the old log cabin on the J. C. Cottrell farm. Mrs. Wheeler was married to James N. Wheeler,
an engineer, of Portland, who preceeded her in death
twelve years ago, as did also her parents, five brothers
and sisters.
She is survived by three nieces and nephews Maude Halabaugh and Ernest Lacavish of Portland and James Cottrell of
Lenox and Mrs. Colleen
Raymond of Pontiac, Mich.
