Scott, Darold -
Mrs. Paul Eberle received a
newspaper clipping this week from California
which gave the details of the death of her grandson, Darold Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Scott of San Diego, on May 3. As Darold lived in Lenox about a year ago, we are reprinting
the details as they will be interesting
to his friends here.
"Falling from a poorly-constructed raft while floating
in a small body of water beneath the Highland avenue bridge in the Sweetwater valley, Darold Scott, eight years
old, was drowned yesterday.
"Three of the
boy's companions who were at play with him, watched from the bank, when Darold fell into the water they ran terror stricken from
the scene. The names of only one of the boys had been learned by Coroner S. C.
Kelly last
night.
"The first person to reach the scene of the tragedy was
a man named Burris. His son, Henry, age nine, was one of Darold's companions. Henry ran to his home about 300 yards from the pool and told his
father what had happened.
"After instructing his son to run to a nearby service
station and get help, Burris went to the pool to look for Darold.
The boys body, however, had settled to the bottom and
it was some time before it was found.
"Police and men from the fire department were at the
scene in a short time but were unable to save the boy despite the use of an
inhalator. Mrs. Scott reached the scene just after the body of her boy had been
taken from the water. She was taken home
by the chief of police before the youngster was
pronounced definitely dead. The pool is about six feet deep. Al though comparatively small
it has been enlarged materially by the rains.
"Darold is survived by his
parents a sister, Betty Louise aged 4, and a brother, Andrew, aged 2.
