Miss Margaret Nagle, age 80, passed away at her home in Conrad, Montana, on Wednesday, June 28. Services and burial were at Choteau, Mont

 

Surviving are a sister, Miss Frances Nagel, and brother, John, both

of Lenox, besides a sister Mary of Des Moines and a brother, T.

J. Nagle, who resides in Canada

Nicholls, Mary L. Cottrell –

Mary L. Cottrell, daughter of Edward and Hannah Cottrell, was born February 24, 1886, near Chillocotha in Wapello county, Iowa. She passed away on February 16, 1950, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. P. Arnold, in Lenox, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 11 months

and 22 days.

 

On February 14, 1883, she united in marriage with Daniel Nicholls. To this union were born two daughters, Elgie Goff, who passed away October 30, 1909, and Arlie Arnold of Lenox.

 

Early in life she united with the Christian Church at Dallas, Iowa, and remained a faithful member throughout the remainder of her life.

In addition to her one daughter, Elgie Goff, she was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and one brother.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. O. P. Arnold of Lenox two grandchildren, Veva Petersdorf of Minneapolis and Joy Arnold of Des Moines, four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were conducted from the Highland Park Funeral Home in Des Moines by Rev. Merwin Goad and Rev. Knight. Interment in Palmyra cemetery.

Nickle, Elmer Carter –

Flmer Carter, son of Catherine and Oliver Perry Nickle was born on a farm near Maloy, June 21 1863 and passed away March 20, 1951 at his home in C;earfield at the age of 87 years and nine months. He was the last member of a family circle of seven.

 

In 1866, after his father returned from serving in the Union Army, the family moved to a farm four miles south of Clearfield, where he attended public  school and the Christian Sunday School. Here he grew to manhood with the hardships of pioneer days.

 

On March 4, 1885, he was united in marriage to Viola Shawler.  They made their home on a farm close to his parents.  To this union were born Roy E. and Ray D.

 

In 1912, they moved to Clearfield to care for his aged parents and made Clearfield their home thereafter.

 

On January 10, 1944, his devoted wife passed away and his son Ray and wife came to make their home with him to care for him.  In July 1949, his son Ray preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Nickle was interested in the affairs of his nation and community.  He was a cheerful friend to his neighbors.

 

In case of sickness and death he was helpful to others.  His relatives, friends and neighbors found a warm welcome in his home.  And he enjoyed good health up until a few months ago.

The one son, Ray, survives and five grandchildren, Rue Ray Nickle, Mrs. Vernon Straight of Conway, Mrs. Lisle Nord and Mrs. Lee Straight of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. G. G. Hofmeister, 10 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Thursday, March 22, with Rev. L. Cronkhite in charge.  Burial was in Clearfield Cemetery.

O’Biern, Walter

Walter O'Biern died at Chicago on Wednesday, Oct. 25, and

services were held at St. Patrick's church in Lenox on Saturday

at 10 a. m. with the Barber Funeral Home in charge. Burial in St. Patrick's cemetery. Walter J. O'Biern, son of Thomas and Catherine O'Biem, was born on a farm near Conway, and died in Chicago Ill.

Oct. 5, 1950, at the age of 72 years.

 

He grew to young manhood in this vicinity and later was engaged in business in Kansas City for the last several years he was in the real estate business in Chicago, Ill.   He was one of a family of eight children and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Tom Reimer of Maryville, Mo., and Mrs. Minnie Luton of St. Joseph, Mo.

 

The body was brought here for burial, accompanied by a niece, Mrs. Garrick.  Mass was said by Msgr. Wm. J. McMahon at St. Patrick’s  church on Saturday, Oct. 23.  Music was furnished by Mary Ann Ford.  Pallbearers were Hugh Buchanan, Harley Killion, John Nagle,

Wes Cummings, Ray Garrick, and Max Reimer.

 

Those from out of town who attended the services were Mrs. Minnie Luton, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Garrick, Mr. and Mrs. Wes Cummings, and David, all of St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Bill Steine, of Denver, Color., Mr. and Mrs. Jon Reimer of Maryville, Mo., Mrs. Arnold Walter of Quincy, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ed Phalen of Sharpsburg, Bill Phalen of Bedford and Mr. and Mrs. Max Reimer of Minnesota State.

O’Connell, Guss

Guss O'Connell, 66, retired farmer, died at his home in Lenox at 8

p. m. Wednesday February 21.

 

Mr.  O'Connell was born in Taylor county but lived away for some time, returning to Lenox about four years ago

He is survived by his widow, Minnie, a son Ronald at home, two brothers, Joe of Lenox and Robert of Maryville, Mo., and four sisters, Mrs. Harry Jones of Lenox, of Lenox, Mrs. Alice Jones of Corning, Mrs. Mayme McDonald of Scotts Bluff, Neb., and Mrs. Nellie Robinson of San Diego, Calif.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 23 at St. Patrick's

church, with Father Adam Reisz officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery.

Page, Winn Eugene -

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) for Winn Page, 62, who died Monday at his home in Lenox. The Barber Funeral Home is in charge, with Rev. Earl Moneymaker officiating.  Burial in Fairview cemetery.

 

Mr. Page is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Ann Page, and a sister, Mrs. Eula Beach both of Lenox.

Page, Winn Eugene -

Winn Eugene Page, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emery E. Page, was born June 15, 1887 in Lenox, Iowa, and passed away May 1,

1950 at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 15 days, at the home of his mother in Lenox.

 

He attended the Lenox public schools. In, 1911-12 he was engaged in the restaurant business in Lenox, and in later years in the same business in northern Iowa, Omaha, and Kansas City. For the past six years he had made his home with his mother, Mrs. Mary Ann Page in Lenox. He was preceded in death by his father in the year 1889, and also by a brother,

Harry L. Page, who passed away in 1947. Surviving are his mother, one sister, Mrs. Eula Beach and several nieces and

nephews.

 

Winn was of a quiet disposition and very fond of little children and will be missed by all.

 

Funeral services were held at the Barber Funeral Home on Thursday, May 4, with the Rev. Earl Moneymaker in charge. Interment in Lenox Cemetery.

Paton, Elijah -

Word has been received that Elijah Paton, 86, died on February

5th at Los Angeles, California, where he had  been visiting a daughter. His wife preceded him in death six years ago. He lived in Lenox over 50 years ago. He moved from here to Clearfield and then to Indianola where he continued to make his home until his death.

 

He was an uncle of Mrs. Arlo Richard of Lenox. Other survivors

are: seven daughters, one son and 12 grandchildren. One daughter, Zoe, was a former teacher in the Lenox schools.

 

Funeral services were at the Peterson Funeral Home at Indianola.

Interment at Indianola.

Paul, C. E. -

Clerk of Courts C. E. Paul died Wednesday morning at three o'clock, having suffered a heart attack the previous Monday, when he was taken to the Clarinda hospital. Mr. Paul had served four terms as clerk, and was 70 years of age at the time of his death. Surviving are

his widow and two children, Robert Paul of Gallatin, Mo., and Ruth Badgett of Topeka, Kans.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford. The court house will remain closed all of Friday afternoon. Judge Johnston has appointed Wilma Novinger as Acting Clerk to serve until Jan. 1, 1951 and the Board of Supervisors has appointed W. L. Steeves, retiring county treasurer, to the position of Clerk of Courts, beginning with the Jan. 1, 1951 term.

Peterson, Clarke Merle –

Clark Merle Peterson, second son of Herman and Velma (Hoops) Peterson was born on the Peterson homestead at Strand, Iowa, on January 24, 1923. Clark entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 2, 2011, at his home in Corning at the age of eighty-eight years, three months and nine days.

Clark attended country school and helped his parents on the farm until entering service to his country on October 19, 1944. Clark served in the 25th Division of the US Army as a combat infantryman in WWII overseas in the Luzan area and Japan. He was Honorably Discharged on November 15, 1946, after receiving the Asistic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and Army of Occupation Medal Japan.

When Clark returned home from the war he entered into the farming business and purchased his own farm in 1948 south of Corning. This same year he started his life-long passion for carpentry and began working with Harold Wiley, as Clark loved to build things. He also erected grain bins for many years.

On February 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wilma May Hardisty at the Methodist Parsonage at Bedford, Iowa. The couple moved into their farm where they were blessed with three children: Nancy, Doug and Jeanie. Clark and Wilma celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary. They lived on the farm for 58 years. They spent many years wintering in Texas.

Clark’s favorite past time was playing cards with family and friends. He played his last game on Sunday and he won. He enjoyed collecting and restoring Allis Chalmers tractors. He looked forward to the visits with his grand children and great-grand children.

Clark was a member of the Corning American Legion OURCQ Post #117.

Left to cherish Clark’s memory is his wife, Wilma Peterson of Corning, IA; daughter, Nancy Robards (special friend Larry Drew) of Corning, IA; son, Doug (wife Sandy) Peterson of Corning, IA; daughter, Jeanie Bastian of Atlantic, IA; sister, Darlene Russell-Richie (husband Ron) of Everett, WA and brother, Lawrence Peterson of Corning, IA; grandchildren: Chad Davis (wife Chasity) of Parker, CO, Angela Swearingen of Carroll, IA, Lori Mitchell (husband Matt) of Nodaway, IA and Scott Peterson (wife Shelia) of Union, NE; eight great-grandchildern and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Donald and two infants ( Lawrence Eugene and Darrell Dean); sister, Vera, and son-in-law, Raymond Robards.

Mrs. G. A. Pool, 68, passed way at the Lenox Nursing Home, Monday, March 5, at 9 a.m.  She was born in Illinois but had lived in this vicinity for a number of years.

 

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Lenox on Wednesday, March 7, with Rev. Merwin Coad officiating. 

 

She is survived by her husband, G. A. Ford of near Lenox, two sons, Max of York, Neb. and Cranston of Des Moines, One daughter, Mrs. Pauline Valdern of Clive and five grandchildren.

Pool, Jessie Ann Naven

Jessie Ann Pool, beloved wife and mother, passed away at the Lenox Rest Home in Lenox, Iowa, March 5, 1951, at nine o’clock in the morning, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 5 days, following an illness of several months.

 

Jessie Pool, daughter of George and Jane Bainter Naven, was born in Henderson county, Illinois, December 31, 1882,

 

On March 15, 1905 she was united in marriage to Garfield A. Pool at the home of her parents.  To this union were born two sons, Cranston A. Pool of Des Moines, Iowa; Dr. Max G. Pool of York, Neb. and one daughter, Mrs. William E. Valder, of Clive, Iowa.

 

Mrs. Pool spent most of her married life in Taylor and adjoining counties of Iowa.  She became a member of the Fairview Church in Taylor county at an early age.  After moving to the Lenox community in 1935 she transferred her membership to the Lenox Christian church in Lenox, Iowa.

 

She is survived by her husband, two sons, a daughter, five grandchildren, two daughters-in-law.  Also by one sister, Mrs. R. G. McClelland of Gravity, Iowa, three brothers, William E. Naven of Kent, Iowa, and Clarence and Clyde of Brooks.  A number of other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors who also mourn her passing.

 

Pallbearers were Ray Hayes, Donald Tully, Harold Welch, Harold Gill, Marion Davis and Roy Martin.

Powers, Mary Grace -

Mary Grace Powers was born in Warrensburg, Mo., Aug. 5, 1872 and died at the O. W. Streams home in Creston of a heart attack on February 20, 1950.

 

She spent her girlhood days in Mt. Ayr until she was united in marriage with Charles Powers on January 20, 1695. They moved to Boston, Mass. One daughter, Gladys, was born to this union.

 

She was a member of the Methodist church and also a long time member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge.

 

In 1917 her daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Skinner of Bedford passed, away and on June 211932 her husband passed away at their home in Des Moines, where she had tenderly cared for him. He had been in failing

health for a number of years.

 

Mary was the only one left of a family of eight children. She had lived in Creston the last 10 years.  She leaves to mourn her loss, one nephew, John L. Gray of Mt. Ayr; two grand nieces, Mrs. J. P. Arnold of Des Moines and Susan Gray of Gabriel, Calif.; two grand nephews, L. L. Gray of Fort Wayne, Ind., and W. C. Gray of Gabriel, Calif., and one great grand nephew, Dean Arnold of Des Moines, also a host of friends and neighbors.  Mary, with her thoughtfulness and pleasing ways, will be missed by all.

 

The funeral service was held at the Arnold Funeral Home at 1:30 Wednesday, Feb. 22 and was in charge of Rev. Clarence Richardson.  Burial was in Bedford.

Purdum, Bertha Thomas –

Mrs. Bertha Purdum, 49 died at 4 P. M. Thursday at Greater

Community hospital in Creston, having suffered a stroke.

Obituary

Bertha Thomas Purdum, daughter of Carrie and Loat Thomas, was born at Yates Center, Kansas, on Feb. 13, 1901 and passed away at Greater Community hospital in Creston on Nov. 16, 1950 at the age of 49 years, 9 months and 3 days.

 

At the age of seven she moved with her parents to Oklahoma,

where she grew to young womanhood. On Nov. 22, 1916, she

was united in marriage to Aaron Richard Purdum. To this union

were born six children, three daughters, Lucille Goldsmith,

Corning, Gladys Leach, Lenox and Jean Lewis, Des Moines,

and three sons, Raymond, Kent, Clifford, Creston and Dale of

Lenox. She was preceded in death by her husband and had

spent the remainder of her life in the Lenox community.

 

Surviving besides the six children are the mother of the deceased

Mrs. Carrie Thomas of Guthrie, Okla., Guthrie, Okla., two sisters, Gladys Mahnke of Lindsay, Okla., and Elizabeth Berthelsen of Dallas, Texas, three brothers, Orville and Walter Thomas of Guthrie, Okla., and Homer Thomas of Corning, and six grandchildren. She was a loving daughter, a wonderful sister and understanding friend and a

kind and devoted mother. She will be deeply missed by every

one who knew her.

 

Funeral services were held in the United Presbyterian church

on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19. with Rev. Earl Moneymaker in

charge. Casket bearers were Admiral Rhoades, Claire  Gibson,

Wm. Neuhardt, Lum Bowman Leman Nelson and Vertis.Reeder.

Music was furnished by Roland Buxton with Mrs. James Arneal at the piano. Burial in Lenox cemetery.

Quartz, Alonzo -

Alonzo Quartz, 56 year-old Clearfield farmer, was killed Sunday afternoon in a tractor accident on his farm two and one half miles southeast of Clearfield.  His body was found under the tractor in a ditch by his wife, about 4:30 p. m. He had gone to a field about 11

 a. m. to work with the tractor. When he had not returned by late afternoon, Mrs. Quartz became worried and went to look for him.

Quartz' chest was crushed when the tractor overturned and fell on him after rolling over in a ditch.

 

Surviving are his widow,  his father, and three sisters. Mr. Quartz was a brother of Mrs. Chris Larson and Mrs. Quartz is as sister of Mr. Larson, a Ringgold county supervisor.

 

Quartz had come to the Clearfield community about five years ago from Nebraska and had lived on the farm southeast of there since that time. He was born and raised at Loup City, Nebr.

Riepe, A.H. -

A. H. Riepe, 88, a long-time resident of the Kent community, died at 11 a. m. Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ruth Bittner, at Omaha, Neb. Mr. Riepe had been in failing health for several years

and had been an invalid since breaking his hip in a fall 26 months ago.

 

Funeral services were held at the Kent Methodist church at 2 p. m. Saturday, in charge of the Arnold Funeral Home. Rev. Ida Roberts, pastor of the Shannon City and Arispe Methodist churches, officiated. Burial in the Morgan cemetery south of Kent.

 

A. H. Riepe was born near Burlington, Iowa, December 22, 1862. He had operated a farm in the Kent community for more than 50 years but had lived in Omaha with his daughter since his retirement a few

years ago.

 

Surviving are three children, Paul Riepe of Creston, James Riepe of Arispe and Mrs. Bittner of Omaha, Neb.; two stepchildren, M. W. Brewer of Denver, Colo, and Mrs. Myrtle Thomas of Mediapolis, Iowa; and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Thie, Mrs. Clara Leighton and Mrs. Alpha Naylor, all of near Burlington.

Riley, Charles -

Charles Riley, son of Martin and Eva Riley, was born on January 2, 1875 on a farm in Adams county near Corning, and passed away at the Greater Community hospital in Creston on June 24, 1950 at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 22 days.

 

On March 19, 1913 he was united in marriage with Frances

Geneva Ambrose. There were no children born to this union.

 

He spent his entire life on a farm in Adams county until about two years ago when he moved to Lenox. His death came very unexpectedly as he was apparently in good health until about three days before his last illness.

 

He united with the Methodist church at Mercer Center in August, 1915, and was a faithful attendant there. He held offices in the church and was trustee at the time of his death.

 

The deceased leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted wife, one brother Lewis of Corning, June Brokaw, who spent many years with them, many nieces and  nephews and a host of friends.

 

His father and mother, six brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. [POEM]

 

The funeral service was held at the Lenox Methodist church

Tuesday, June 27 at 3 P. M. It was conducted by Rev. C. W.

Richardson, assisted by Rev. Arthur Henry of Prescott. Music

was furnished by Rolland Buxton and Mrs. Norma Paymal.

Pallbearers were Harvey Riley, Raymond Riley, Robert Riley,

Carl Ambrose, Berton Ambrose and June Brokaw

Rogers, Anna M. McGraw -

Anna M. Rogers was born in Salem, Kan., Jan. 5, 1870, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pearle Beggs northwest of Clearfield Sept. 23, 1950, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 18 days. Besides Mrs. Beggs a son. Homer Rogers of Jackson, Minn., survives. Also other relatives and many friends. Funeral rites were held Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Estherville, Iowa, with interment in Estherville cemetery.

Rogers, Anna M. McGraw -

Anna M. McGraw, daughter of Elizabeth and Martin McGraw, was born near Salem, Kansas, on January 5, 1870, and was called to her eternal rest on September 23, 1950, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pearle Beggs at Clearfield, Iowa.

 

When a child she moved with her family to Linn County, la., where she lived until her marriage to Homer E. Rogers on Nov. 7, 1887. The following spring they established their home on a farm three miles north of Lenox, where they lived until moving to a farm near

Estherville in the Spring of 1913. Later they lived near Ringsted,

Dolllver and Gruver. In early life Mrs. Rogers united with the Church of the Brethern, later transferring her membership to the Methodist church. She was a member of the Eastern Star chapter at Bedford, Iowa.

 

Four children were born to bless this marriage: Floyd, who died In infancy, Earl, who passed away in 1940, and Pearle and Homer who survive.  Following the death of her husband in 1945, Mrs. Rogers

moved to Southern Iowa to spend her declining years. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Mrs. Pearl Beggs of Clearfield; her son Homer and daughter-in-law, Ona of Jackson, Minn.; six  grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  Also surviving are three brothers, one sister and many other relatives and friends.

 

Services were held at Estherville. Casket bearers were her five grandsons: Don and Leroy Beggs, Earl, Jack and Harold

Rogers, and a very close friend, Burton Tungland.

Rogers, Elizabeth Hanah Scott -

Mrs. C. W. Rogers, 84, died at 3:00 a. m. Monday at her home in Creston. She was a former resident of the Lenox; vicinity, and she and her husband had celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary just a few weeks ago.

 

Elizabeth Hanah, daughter of Richard and Priscilla Scott was born March 6, 1866, near Ely, Iowa in Linn county and passed away at her home in Creston, April 10, 1950 at the age of 84 years, 1 month and

4 days.

 

On February 25, 1866, she was united in marriage to Charles W. Rogers at Cedar Rapids Iowa. They had the rare privilege of celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary this year.

 

To this union were born nine children, three of whom preceded

her in death, Ray in 1919, Effie Gibson in 1920 and Vera

Weatherman in 1936. A son-in-law, Van Gibson, passed away in 1942 and a daughter-in-law, Alma Rogers, in 1945. Four grandchildren have also passed away.

 

She become a member of the Methodist Church in early childhood while living in Ely. Following their marriage they came to live near Lenox, where they remained for 46 years, then they moved to Leon, remaining there until 1944. Then they moved to Creston, their present home.

 

In October of 1941 she suffered a broken hip and has been a partial invalid since them. However, she took her suffering patiently and with a smile.

 

She is survived by her husband, six children, Erney of Prescott, Alpha  of Shannon City, Mary McGregor of Prescott, Robert of Leon, Orville of Lenox and Fay Hockett of Lenox; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

 

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Clarence Richardson

and was held at the Arnold Funeral Home at 2 P. M., Wednesday, April 12. Music was furnished by Rolland Buxton and Norma Paymal.

Rupert, Clyde -

Funeral services for Clyde Rupert, 74, retired Clearfield farmer were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church at Clearfield with the Rev. Reel and Rev. Pennington of Mount Ayr officiating. Burial in the

Clearfield cemetery.  Mr. Rupert passed away at Lutheran hospital in Des Moines on Thursday evening, Nov. 25, having  been hospitalized since the previous Friday.

 

Surviving are his widow and three children, Mrs. Mary Davis is of Mount Ayr,  Mrs. Helen Ouderkirk of Portland Oregon and Charles Rupert of Monroe

Clyde A. Ruppert was born August 6, 1876 at Geneseo Ill. and departed this life Nov 23 1950 at the age of 73 years 3 months and 15 days. The family moved to a farm east of the Calvary church in 1877 and 13 years later to Lenox, where Clyde graduated from high

school.

 

On June 31, 1900, he was united in marriage to Eva Hockabout

of. Lenox. They located on his father's farm, where they lived until 1908, when they moved one mile southeast of Clearfield and to Clearfield to in 1943.

 

To this union, were born two daughters, Mary Davis of Mt. Ayr and Helen Ouderkirk of Portland, Ore., and one son Charles, of Monroe, Iowa.

 

He united with the Christian Church in Lenox in 1895.

 

He is survived toy his wife, the two daughters and one son,

seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and niece, Mrs. Ethel Manson of Omaha and many friends.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 26 at the Christian

church with the Rev. Reel officiating assisted by Rev. G. Pennington.

Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Ryan, Harold -

The death of Harold Ryan, 28, occurred at the home of his parents at Corning Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Ryan and a brother of Eddie Ryan of Lenox.

 

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 9:30 at St. Patrick's church at Corning with interment at Corning.  Surviving are his parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Salyards, Eudora Cooper Cade -

Eudora Cooper was born in Rushville, Schuyler county, Ill.,

April 13, 1867, and departed this life at Iowa City, Iowa, on June

21, 1950 at the age of 83 years, two months and eight days.

 

When she was eight years of age, her parents brought her to

New Market, Iowa, and she spent the rest of her life in Taylor county.

 

Eudora'Cooper was united in marriage to F. M. Cade in 1889.

To this union was born one son, Carl, of New Market. Mr. Cade died in 1891. She was united in marriage to J. H. Salyards in 1899. To

this marriage was born one son, Haven, of Glenwood, Iowa.

Mrs. J. H. Salyards was a member of the Royal Neighbors and Rebekah Lodges; she was also a member of the Christian church for many years, and although she had been in failing health for several years, she attended whenever it was possible for her to do so.

 

She is survived by her husband, two sons and two nieces, Mrs. Grace Thomas of Corning, Iowa, and Mrs. Mabel Greenway of Bedford, Iowa who were reared in the home, four grandchildren, Dean Salyards of Snyder, Texas, Warren Cade of Clarinda, Iowa, Marvin Cade of New Market and Mrs. Homer Horning of Bedford; five great-

grandchildren; also Mrs. Vern Trumbo of Rock Island, Ill., Eugene Greenway of Bedford and Edward Thomas of Corning, children of the two nieces she raised, and one brother, John R. Cooper of New Market, other relatives and many friends, who mourn her passing.

Shaughnessy, Margaret -

Miss Margaret Shaughnessy, 80, died at Iowa City, Monday a.m. She was a resident of Lenox about 35 years ago. Services were held at Iowa City, Wednesday at 8 a. m. with graveside services Wednesday at 2 p. m. at St. Patrick's cemetery in Lenox with Msgr. W. J. McMahon officiating

Short, Floy Zella Seamans -

Floy Zella Seamans, daughter of Marvin and Mary Seamans, was born Dec. 13, 1875 at Batavia, N. Y., and departed this life on May 16, 1950 at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 3 days.

 

At the age of three years, she moved with hen parents to Kansas.

She cam« to Iowa when ten years of age, residing in Creston where her father was engaged in the hardware business. When a young lady, she moved to a farm south of Lenox, where she taught in the Taylor county schools.

 

She was married to John Short on April 22, 1896, and lived in the Blue Grove community until 1908, when they moved to their  farm six miles east of Lenox. In 1941 she moved with her husband to Lenox, where she lived until death claimed her. She was baptized

at Greenwood M. E. church on July 7, 1895, and in 1907 moved

her membership to Blue Grove church and later to the Lenox

Church of Christ.

 

Left to mourn her passing are her two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Beck of Lenox and Mrs. Delpha Bell of  Des Moines; nine grandchildren

and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Fleming and Mrs. Lizzie Drorbaugh, both of Lenox.   Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband in 1949, one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Long, in 1938 and a brother Asa in 1910.

 

He ready wit and sunny disposition, a sweet thoughtfulness for the welfare of others, and a desire to be helpful wherever and whenever she could won her many friends.

Short, Matilda -

Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Short, 78, who died at her

home in Conway early Saturday morning, were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Methodist church in Conway. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Lee Short of Lenox and  Clifford Short of Conway; five daughters, Helen Madden of Kent, Mary Short of Conway, May Harvey, Viola Atkins and Grace Horton of Clearfield; and a number of grandchildren. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death.

Shreck, Silas -

Former Lenox resident Silas Shreck, 77, died at a hospital in

Mt. Vernon, Illinois, on February  15th where he had been ill for several months. He made his home with his son Isaac Shreck, since moving from Lenox about two years ago. He was well known

in this area as he had woven rugs for so many people while he lived here. Services were a Mt. Vernon, Ill.   Burial was there. He leaves two nieces Mrs. George Ferguson, and Mrs. Edgar Black of Lenox.

Smith, William W. -

William W. Smith, 73, died at 8 a. m., Saturday, at his home in Lenox. He fell on the ice about a week ago and had been ill since then.

Obituary

William W. Smith, son of William and Mary A. Smith, was born near Cambridge, Ill., on March 24, 1876, and passed away at his home in Lenox on February 18, 1950 at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 24 days.

 

He moved to Iowa at the age of 15 years. In 1900 he married to Anna C. McCarl, who passed away in 1908.

 

November 14, 1912, he married Cynthia J. Hackett, who died April 16, 1921.

 

Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Bessie Lee Franklin, November 5th, 1925.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Bessie, one daughter, Olta Lawson of Lubbock, Texas, two sons, Leslie and Cleo of Milan, Ill., one step-daughter, Mabel Sanburn of Conway, 8 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Arnold Beckman of Moline, Ill., and Mrs. S. F. Rinkler of West Des Moines.

 

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers, two sisters, and one grandchild.

 

The funeral service was held at the Arnold Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Monday, Feb. 20.  Music was furnished by Rolland Buxton and Mrs. Floyd Boltinghouse.  The service was in charge of Rev. Clarence Richardson.
