Moore, Albert -

Burial was here Wednesday for Albert Moore, 71, who died

at the Taylor County Home on Monday. Mr. Moore was a lifetime

resident of this county and was preceded in death in 1928

by his wife and by a son in 1921.

Surviving are two daughters Jean Weingarth of Bedford and

Blanche Bailey of Redding; three grandchildren and four

great-grandchildren; a sister Mabel Horton of Shannon City

and three brothers, Fred Moore of Rathbun, Ed Moore of Colorado

Springs, Colo., and Tom Moore of Kellerton.

Moore, Albert -

Albert Moore, son of Wm. and Mary Moore, died near Bedford, Monday at the age of 71 years. He was married to Allie Waters and to this union were born two daughters, Jean Weingrath of Bedford and Blanche Bailey of Redding and one son who died in 1921. The wife and mother passed away in 1926. He is survived by his two daughters also one sister, Mable Horton of Shannon City, three brothers Fred Moore of Rathbrun, Ida., Ed Moore of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Tom Moore of Kellerton. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the J. R. Crew funeral home with burial in the Lenox cemetery.

Nisely, Frank Thomas -

Frank Thomas, son of Thomas and Emma Nisely was born near

Kent, Iowa, May l6th, 1880, and departed this life at, a nursing

home in Villisca, April 20, 1952  at the age of 71 years, 11 months

and 4 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister,

Cora Peterson. Nov. 4, 1902, he was united in marriage to Addie Sarah Hewitt and to this union one son, Everett, was born.

Frank was engaged in farming until ill health forced him to retire and move to Shannon City, where they resided until the fall of 1943 when they moved to the home of their son in Villisca.

Surviving are his invalid wife, son Everett and daughter-in-law

Edna; two grandsons, Merrill of the armed forces and Tommy at

home; two granddaughters, Mrs. Bill Dunn of Villisca and Mrs.

Keith Moore of Emerson; one great-granddaughter and one

great-grandson; one sister Myrtle of Seattle, Wash., besides a host of other relatives and friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at Villisca with interment in the Morgan Cemetery.

Orr, James Leslie -

James Leslie Orr, 56, passed away Saturday at his home near

Arispe. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Orr had been

cusodian of the Arispe school since moving there a year ago

and had resided on a. farm west of Arispe. He is survived by

his widow, Elizabeth; his mother, Mrs. Mary Orr of Lenox; two brothers Charles and William, both of Martinez, Calif.; three sisters

Mrs. Fronia Finn of Casper, Wyo., Mrs. Cora, Benedict of Mountain Home, Ark. And Mrs. Edith Miller of Martinez, Calif.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Arnold Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Willard Morris. Interment in the Lenox cemetery. Music was furnished by Mmes. H. Roy Long and A. L. Roll, with Mrs. James Arneal at the piano. Pallbearers were Henry Leonard, Lloyd Leonard, Lee Leonard, Homer Minnick, Cleo Sturm and Kenneth Bolttinghouse. Military rites were conducted by Parkinson Post 250 of the American Legion.

Obituary

James Leslie Orr, son of William E. and Mary E. Orr, was born March 26, 1896, in Lenox Iowa; he passed from this life at his farm home northwest of Arispe, Iowa, March 8, 1952.

On January 20, 1920, Mr. Orr was united in marriage with Elizabeth Leonard. They made their home on a farm west of Lenox until the spring of 1936 when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. Returning to Iowa in 1949, they lived on their farm near Arispe.

He served in the Army in World War I. When he returned home, he joined the American Legion Parkinson Post No. 250, m which he has continually maintained his membership.

When a young man he united with the Presbyterian church in Lenox where his membership has since remained.

Leslie was one of 10 children.  Preceding him in death were his

father and four brothers.  He was a devoted husband giving much of his time to his home life. He found much enjoyment in his nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends

Patterson, Cora E. -

Mrs. Cora E. Patterson, well known Guthrie, Okla., woman, passed away there Friday, with services and burial held the following Sunday.  Mrs. Patterson was a sister of Claude Peltier of Lenox, who survives, as do one daughter, Mrs. Donald Melton of Guthrie, and two grandchildren.

Phillips, Clara Bestor -

Clara Bestor, daughter of Anna Brown and Dryden Bestor

was born June 30, 1880, near Lenox, Iowa, and passed away

July 22, 1952 in a hospital at Seattle, Washington. Death was

due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

Her parents moved into Lenox when she was a baby, and it was here that she grew up and graduated from Lenox schools in 1896.  The family lived for awhile at Lone Tree.  January 31, 1903, she was united in marriage to Charles Phillips of Big Stone City, S. Dak.  They established their home in that city, but later homesteaded near Hettinger, N. Dak.,  moving a few years later to Groten, S. Dak.  In 1919 they moved to Seattle, Wash. Where they have since resided.

Surviving are her husband; five daughters,  Mrs. George-(Lois) Chadoe;  Dorothy; Mrs. Ed (Mary) Lindholm; Mrs., Glen (Ruth) Bailey; Mrs. Malcolm (Joyce) Barnes; one son, Alan and eight grandchildren, all residing in Seattle.

Funeral services were held July 26th at the Columbia Funeral

Poe, Osa Wilson -

Mrs. Ida Savage received word of the death of her niece, Mrs.

E. E. La Poe (Osa Wilson) in Portland, Ore. Mrs. La Poe will

be remembered here as she grew up in the Nelson Savage home.

She came at the a.ge of four when her mother died. She had

been quite ill since the first of the year with heart trouble. She

was taken to the hospital May 19 and passed away May 25.  She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, one daughter, two sons and six grandchildren, all residing in Portland with the exception of the youngest son, Wallace who is serving in the U.S. Navy

Price, Prentice -

This community was greatly shocked Friday evening to learn

of the tragic death by drowning of Prentice Price, farmer and

long time resident of this community.  Mr. Price and Clint Hill

had gone to the Lake of Three Fires to fish. The boat capsized

while trying to raise the anchor. Mr. Hill was able to swim to shore and call for help but Mr. Price was not able to swim and help arrived too late to save him. Firemen from. Bedford were called to the scene and the body was recovered about two hours later. Mr. Hill was brought to his home suffering from shock and chills but is getting along nicely. Mr. Price is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Elvin Savage of Streeter, Ill. and Mrs. Maurice Mahill of Denver,

Colo. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon. Burial in the Gravity cemetery

Richard, Ernie William -

Funeral services for W. E. Richard, 78, who died Monday in Excelsior Springs, Mo., will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Arnold Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Lenox cemetery. Masonic services will be conducted at the grave.

Mr. Richard was former owner and operator of the Gamble

Store in Lenox, selling the business five years ago, and was also

an insurance agent at one time. He and his wife moved to Excelsior Springs nine years ago.  Survivors: his wife, Florence; one brother, Arlo, of Lenox and one sister, Mrs. Orval Jones, of Des Moines.

Richard, Ernie William -

Ernie William Richard, son of William and Jennie Richard, was

born near Lenox, Iowa, May 11, 1874, and passed away at his

home in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, June 30, 1952, at the age

of 78 years.

He attended the country school, Lenox high school, and finished a commercial course at Tarkio college, Tarkio, Missouri, where he remained for two years as an assistant in the commercial department.  His business career took him into various kinds of work, beginning in Lenox, Iowa, in 1896 in the grocery business. He was in commission work for a short time; and three years with the

Immigration Department. He was representative for J. H. Merril company of Ottumwa, Iowa; also for the J. C. Lysle Milling Company, Leavenworth, Kansas, for a time, after which he returned to Lenox where he remained in business until six years ago, when he retired from business and moved to Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

On July 3, 1918, he was united in marriage to Florence Johnson

of Brookfield, Missouri.  He is survived 'by his wife Mrs.  Florence Richard, Excelsior Springs, Missouri; one brother, Arlo E. Richard, Lenox; one sister, Mrs. Olive Jones, Des Moines; one nephew, W. G.

Richard, Pittsburgh, Pa.; two nieces, Mrs. Bernice McCarroll,

Wickenburg, Ariz., and Helen Jones, Des Moines; also two great nieces, Virginia Lee Richard and Don Carter Richard of Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was a member of Tremont Lodge No. 343 A. F. & A. M. at Lenox and of Eastern Star Chapter R. A. M. at Corning.  He was a member of the Woods Memorial Christian church at Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Claude Risinger, were

held July 3rd at the Arnold Funeral Home, with music furnished

by Rolland Buxton and Ruth Boltinghouse. Pallbearers were Orval Walter, John Drain, Chester Boyer, Floyd Boltinghouse, Harold Welch, Fred Barrans, Harry Walter and Max Hockett. Masonic services were held at the grave. Interment in the Lenox cemetery.

Robinson, Melvin -

Word has been received here of the death of Melvin Robinson,

75 at his home in El Reno, Okla., April 5th, Surviving are two daughters, both of Tulsa, and a son who lives in Montana.  Mr. Robinson was an uncle of Mrs. Frank Carruthers and a cousin of Mrs. Marge Barrans

The Robinsons were old-time residents of Lenox, leaving here

about 45 years ago. Mr. Robinson was a farmer until his health no longer permitted such work. Before his death he had been in ill health and a patient at a veterans' hospital. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War..

Rowe, Roy -

Roy Rowe, 63, farmer living west of Clearfield, was killed on

Wednesday of last week when his tractor was struck by a Burlington

freight as he was pulling a load of hay across a private crossing on the Geo. Swanson farm. He had been helping his neighbor put up hay. Glen White, riding on the tractor, saw the train in time to jump, receiving only slight injuries when he hit the hay rack. The low

crossing of the track at the point of the accident resulted in poor vision of an approaching train. Surviving are his wife and a

daughter, Mrs. Nellie Jackson of Clearfield.

Sawvell, Loda

Loda Sawvell, 70, died Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph hospital in Omaha.  He had submitted to surgery and later complications and a heart attack caused his death.  Survivors: his widow, Katie and one daughter, Mrs. George Thompson of Lenox; a daughter Mrs. Clifford Jeppersen and one son, Floyd, both of Wall, S. Dak., eight grandchildren, one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Henry Junge of Redding, Calif., and one brother, Charles of Prairie du Chlen, Wics.

Mr. Sawvell was born at McGregor, Iowa, April 10, 1881.  He had lived in Lenox eight years.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church with the Rev. Harold Butts officiating.  Music was furnished by the men’s quartet: Erskine Blair, James Arneal, Paul Davis and Guy Henderson with Mrs. Norma Paymal at the organ.  Interment at Fairview cemetery.

Loda Sawvell, son of Hiram and Emily Sawvell was born April 10, 1881 in McGregor, Iowa, in Clayton county and passed away at Omaha, Neb. Saturday, Feb. 16 at the age of 70 years, 10 months and six days.  He was one of eleven children.

He was united in marriage to Katie Ait at McGregor, Iowa on June 27, 1906.  To this union were born 2 daughters and one son, Pearl Thompson of Lenox, Iowa, Sylvia Jeppesen and Floyd Sawvell, both of Wall, S. Dak.

He homesteaded in Wall in 1907, where he lived most of his married life.  He retired and moved to Lenox eight years ago.  He was a devoted husband and loving father.

Scott, Vivian Knott -

Mrs. Walter (Vivian) Scott, 65, died Sunday evening at .10:15

at the Creston hospital. Her home was in Sharpsburg, where

she and her husband had lived since retiring from the farm.

Survivors: her husband, two daughters, Hazel and Faye; two

 sons, Donald and William; four grandchildren, all of Shanpsburg;

two brothers, Charles Knott of Sharpsburg and Bert Knott of Oklahoma; five sisters, Mrs. Jessie Hyatt and Mrs. Oma Eno, both of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Maude Weller and Mrs. Isla Smith of Sharpsburg and Miss Elva Knott of Fort Collins, Colo.  Services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Sharpsburg Methodist church with interment in the Lenox cemetery.

Shafer. Etta -

Miss Etta Shafer, 82, died Thursday at 6:30 p. m. at the  Lenox Rest Home here. She had been ill with an intestinal disorder and virus infection. Survivors: Two brothers, Harry of Augusta, Kansas, and Wilbur of Omaha, Nebraska, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She had lived in Lenox most of her life, coming here in the early eighties. She was president of the Women's Missionary Society

of the Christian church at the time of her death. She was a former teacher in the Lenox public schools, and had spent a few years in missionary work in the mountain schools in Kentucky.

Among her possessions was a valuable antique, an old melodeon, one of the very early American organs, which had been used to campaign for "Abe" Lincoln.

Services were held Sunday at 2:30 p. m. at the Christian church with Rev. Claude W. Risinger officiating. Interment in the Lenox cemetery.

Stalker, Charles E. -

Charles E. Stalker, 73, lifelong resident of Union county died Sunday. He had retired from farming eight years ago, moving to Kent. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. C. E McPherson, were held Wednesday in the Kent Methodist church with interment in the Cromwell cemetery. Surviving are his wife one son, one sister and three brothers,

Stewart, John H. -

The Lenox community was saddened to learn this week of by the  death of Dr. John H. Stewart, 68, on Wednesday morning, when his car skidded into a truck on a highway near Rockport, Mo. Dr. Stewart was a retired United Presbyterian church minister and a missionary to India for 38 years.

Raised in Lenox, Dr. Stewart has made his home in Tarkio, Mo. where funeral services will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon.

Following the Rev. Moneymaker's departure from Lenox last

July, Dr. Stewart had filled the local U. P. pulpit on several occasions.

He is survived toy his wife, a daughter, Dr. Genevieve Stewart

of San Francisco, Calif., psychiatrist, a son, Paul Stewart, of

Radford, Va., and two grandchildren.

Straight, Marvin -

Marvin Straight, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Straight of Clearfield, passed away Wednesday at Maryville hospital at the age of 6 years and 6 days.  He is survived by his  parents, brother Raymond,  sister Virginia and twin sisters Marianne and Suzanne.

Funeral services will be held Friday at, 2 o. m. at the Clearfield

Methodist church. Interment in Plattevilie cemetery.

Sundell, John A. -

Services were held Monday at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian

church for John A. Sundell, 84,  who passed away Saturday. The

Rev. Donald Watkins officiated with music furnished by Mmes.

Bessie Underwood, Jennie Evans and Donald Watkins and Messrs.

Underwdod and Watkins. Pallbearers were Chas. Jones, Gerald

Boydston, Merle Moore, George Trost, Fred Bruner and Dale Ingram.

Interment in Conway cemetery.

Obituary

John Anders Sundell was born July 19, 1867, in West Jutland,

Sweden, and died at his home east of Sharpsburg Iowa, after

a short illness on April 27, 1952 at the age of 84 years, 9 months

and 8 days.

In 1886, at the age of 19, he left his native land and came to America. His first home in the United States was in Escanaba, Mich., and in 1901 he came to Taylor county, Iowa. A short time later he urchased the farm near Sharpsburg, Iowa where he lived throughout the rest of his life.

In 1899 he was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Biad, his

companion for over 50 years.  They are the parents of three

children, one daughter and two sons. The daughter, Mrs. Agnes

Bashor, employed by the U. S. Census Bureau, Washington. D. C., secured a leave of absence from her position to come home and care for her parents. The sons are Karl Sundell of Conway, Iowa and John Albert Sundell of Western Springs, Ill.

During the early years of his life John was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran church. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, his three children, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a brother and

sister, who live in Sweden, as well as many other relatives and friends.  A grandson, Lowell Allan Bashor, made his home with his

grandparents after the death of his father in 1934.

Tindle, Lois G. Routh

Funeral services and burial were at Clearfield Thursday for Mrs. Ralph Tindle, 59, who died April 1, at her home 5 miles south of Clearfield.  Surviving are her husband, two sons, James of near Lorimor and Dr. Cletus Tindle of Osceola, a daughter, Mrs. Guy Michels of Los Angeles, four brothers, Frank Routh of Lenox, Fred Routh of St. Petersburg, Fla., Bert and Glen Routh, both of Clearfield and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Tindle, also of Clearfield.

Toland, Willie –

Word has been received of the death of Willie Toland at Industry, Ill.  He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Toland, who lived in the Lenox vicinity.  Two sisters and two brothers survive besides his wife, Edna.  One son, Lewis, his parents and three brothers, Jesse, Leslie and Vern preceded him in death.  His surviving sisters are Mrs. Huldah Person of Lenox, Mrs. Ruth Moore of Des Moines and two brothers, Walter of Des Moines and Branch of Lenox, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Brown, Mrs. Chet Pearson and Mrs. Gertrude Toland attended the funeral at Industry on Friday.

Mrs. Vetha LaBelle Van Winkle, 78, passed away Thursday at the home of a daughter Mrs. Ellsworth White, of Conway. Services and burial were at Conway Saturday. Born in Newton, Mrs. VanWinkle had lived in Conway most of her life.

West, Orren Cleaver -

Orren Cleaver West, 75, passed away Sunday at his home near Gravity.  He was a nephew of Lillie Menoher of Lenox.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Oak Hill church with the Rev V.B. Willey officiating. Interment at Prairie Rose cemetery.  Surviving are his aged mother Mrs. Sarah E. West of Corning; his wife; and six children.

Wilson, Gerald T. -

Gerald (Jerry) Wilson, 52 succumbed at the Creston hospital

Wednesday at 10:30 p m where he had been a patient for several days following a worsening in the poor condition of his health the past few years.

Funeral arrangements in charge of Benders’ Funeral Home are not definite at this writing.

Born at Greenfield, Mr. Wilson had been a resident of Iowa all his life with the exception of three years spent, in Missouri. He had been an employee of the Lenox Municipal Light Plant for a number of years, and was a member .of Tremont Lodge A. F. & A. M. of the Masonic

Order, and of the Methodist church.

Surviving are his wife, Berdiece: two brothers, Fred Wilson of Lake Crystal, Minn., and Bert Wilson of Hopkins, Mo.; and three sisters, Mabel Rupe, Bertha Mahaxry and Nelle Butler all of Lenox.

Wilson, Gerald T. –

Gerald T. Wilson, son of Frank and Bessie Wilson was born at Greenfield, Iowa on March 29, 1899 and passed away on April 2, 1952 at the age of 53 years and 4 days.  He moved to Taylor county with his parents at the age of nine years and resided here until his death.  He united with the Methodist church at the age of 12 years.  He was graduated from the Lenox high school in the Class of 1920 and was also a member of Tremont Lodge A. F. & A. M.

On September l, 1926 he was united in marriage to Berdiece Manroe. He had been employed at the Lenox Municipal Light Plant during the last ten years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Dick Wilson,  Surviving are his wife, Berdiece Wilson, Lenox two brothers,  Bert Wilson of Hopkins MO, and Fred Wilson of Lake Crystal, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel  Rupe, Mrs. Nellie Butler

and Mrs. Bertha Maharry, all of Lenox.  Also a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Barber Funeral home in Lenox on Saturday, April 5, at 2:00 p.m.  Rev. Claude W. Risinger and Rev. H. D. Butts officiated.  Interment in the Lenox Cemetery.  Pallbearers were James E. Hughes, Carl Rupe, Bill Harcher, Wendal Nelson, Ronald Olmsted and Virgil Brown.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Marcia Bender and Rolland Buxton.

Wilson, Letha Belle Myers –

Letha Belle Wilson, 80, died Wednesday at her home in the town of Willard, Wisconsin.  Her death was due to a heart ailment.  She had been under a doctor’s care for three days.

Last rites were held at the Church of Christ in Sheldon, Wis. Saturday at 2 p.m. with the body in state at the Church prior to the services.  Rev. Howard Baughman and Rev. A. McEathren were the officiating pastors, with burial made in the Sheldon cemetery.

Letha Belle Myers was born in Washington county, Iowa, Nov. 13, 1871.  She moved with her parents to Lenox, Iowa in 1892.  Her marriage to Emmet Wilson took place in Lenox Nov. 20, 1895.  They moved to a farm three miles east of Sheldon, Wis. In April 1917.  They retired from the farm in May, 1939, and lived at Holcombe, Wis. Until Mr. Wilson’s death in 1944, when Mrs. Wilson moved to the Conrath, Wis. Vicinity.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and Eastern Star Lodge at Lenox, Iowa.

Surviving are two sons, Marlin and Harold, town of Willard, Wis. Two grandchildren, Doris Wilson Haase, town of Marshall and Lyle H. Wilson, Milwaukee, and three great-grandchildren, Karen and Billy Haase and Michael Wilson.  Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Faye Defee and Mrs. Norma Cochran, both of Los Angeles, Calif.  Two brothers and 2 sister preceded her in death.
