Levy. Milton Samuel –
Levy, Hilda Young –
(Taken
from Creston News-Advertiser, May 21.)
Milton
Levy, 56, Lenox clothing merchant, and his wife, Hilda, died of carbon monoxide
poisoning in what Taylor county authorities called a suicide pact. Their bodies
were found in their automobile, parked in the garage at their home by Morris
Bunn, town marshal about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Dr. Earl Stone, Bedford, coroner, said they had been dead since about 2
a. m. Friday. A garden hose was attached
to the exhaust pipe of the automobile and the end placed inside the car. The motor of the car had stopped when the
gasoline in the tank had been used up, the officials said.
Levy
had been arrested May 11 by Union county authorities on a warrant charging him
with a morals charge involving two Creston school boys. He had pleaded not
guilty and was at liberty under $5,000 bond for a preliminary hearing before
Justice of the Peace Elmer L. Hunt, at Creston Tuesday morning.
Mr.
and Mrs. Levy had last been seen Thursday night when they closed their clothing
store. Sheriff Harry Lucas had surmised
something was wrong and had left word with the marshal to go to the Levy home Saturday
and to notify him if anything appeared wrong. The marshal went to the home and
discovered the bodies.
Sheriff
Lucas said the front door of the Levy's new home here was unlocked. He said a
note was found on a small table just inside the door, referring to another note
on a desk. Another note was found with
the bodies in the automobile, he said. Sealed envelopes addressed to relatives were found and were not opened
by the officials. One envelope, the
sheriff said, was the message, Dear ones, forgive us for leaving this
way. It seems best.”
Directions
were given in the notes opened by the officials to call the Barber Funeral Home
here, to notify attorney James Hughes, and to call Mrs. Levy's brother, Elmer
Young, in Washington, D. C.
Their
bodies were taken to St. Joseph, Mo., Sunday and services were held there at
the Heaton-Bowman mortuary on Tuesday. Burial was at St. Joseph.
Mr.
Levy bought the clothing store in Lenox in 1948. They had
built a five-room house here about a year ago. The car was in the basement garage of
this home.

Levy was a veteran of World War I and was active in American Legion work
here. Mrs. Levy was Pan-American

Mr.
Levy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Levy, both 83, live at Kansas City,
